It was so strange. Being a big sister. Sure she'd had a year or so to get used to the idea, but Rose was still wrapping her head around the fact she was a sister. She'd been an only child her entire life. and her parents were old enough to have been grandparents by now. but here he was, little Tony Tyler. And he was the spitting image of Pete. Bright blue eyes and strawberry blonde hair and a splash of freckles across his nose.
Jackie and Pete were out for an evening, to share a little one on one time. Rose was curled up on the couch in front of the fireplace, with Tony snuggled into her lap. Rose was trying to put him to bed by reading him a book. In the end, Rose had just let Tony hold the book and let him read it himself. The two year old was mostly just babbling and repeating things he'd heard his parents say, because obviously a two year old couldn't read.
Time ticked on and Tony finally passed out. Rose smirked and ran her fingers through his hair and slowly sat hop, keeping Tony against her and letting his rest his head on her shoulder as she carefully made her way upstairs, into Tony's room and laid him into his bed and tucked him in. It was the strangest sensation. Rose was old enough to be Tony's mum. And lately, she couldn't help but feel motherly towards him. She flicked on the baby monitor, the receiver in her hand and went to go see what John was getting into.
She made her way down to the kitchen of their home and found him just staring out the window. She smiled softly and came up behind him and rested her forehead between his shoulder blades and gave a tired sigh. "Alright.. Tony's asleep.. Mum and dad should be picking him up in a little while." and she chuckled softly and turned her head just enough to nuzzle her cheek against his back.
Being stuck was horrible. The Doctor hadn't ever really gotten over it. Oh, sure, he took a human ish name (John Noble, he thought it was smashing) and did his best to blend in, but it wasn't the same. He did at least have Rose. That was the one bright spot of living in this universe.
Really, it was the only bright spot to living at all when he was Earthbound like this. John was almost willing to volunteer his services to Torchwood, considering UNIT didn't appear to have been started here. There was something called 'LONGBOW' he'd heard of, but not UNIT. Or, alternatively, UNIT was just veryvery good at hiding.
They were watching over Tony tonight. Well, Rose was. The Doctor didn't think his interpretation of the baby's babbling was really necessary at this point. Instead, he had taken to staring out the window sometime during Tony's reading, and had drifted off into his own thoughts until Rose drew him back to awareness.
Alright.. Tony's asleep.. Mum and dad should be picking him up in a little while." and she chuckled softly and turned her head just enough to nuzzle her cheek against his back.
Smiling despite himself, the Doctor reached for her hand and wrapped it around his torso to hold.
"You're very good with him," he complimented softly. He'd never really pictured Rose with a child before. Not aside from that brief moment when she'd mentioned a baby on the way and he had thought... but no. Jackie's child. Rose, the best big sister in the whole universe. Playfully, he added, "Is there anything you aren't good at, Miss Tyler?"
"You're very good with him... Is there anything you aren't good at, Miss Tyler?"
Her fingers curled affectionately into his as he took her hand and held it to his chest.. As he held it there, her fingers splayed for a moment, feeling the single heartbeat. It just seemed such a strange concept. Her Doctor with a single heart. She didn't care what anyone said. He was The Doctor.
Rose just considered him a new version, one she could live out her life with. A mostly human Doctor. The Doctor... the one she could never see again. John was his gift to her. She knew that. He could never have a life with her, as much as he wanted to. John was The Doctor's way of making her happy.
She would always cherish that sentiment. "Oh, I dunno. Whatcha got?" she smirked a little. There was a lot of things she knew she couldn't do, but she would just let him go one complimenting her. She curled her fingers into his shirt and turned him to face her and wrapped her arms around his middle.
If he could hear her thoughts, the Doctor would have appreciated the sentiment. It was hard enough dealing with his own doubts. The last thing he needed was to lose Rose on top of everything else. Really, he was exactly like the Doctor in every way that mattered.
Just, you know, a bit more rough around the edges. And a better kisser.*
"Oh, you know. The usual. Incurable fascination, wanderlust..." He trailed off, smirking slightly. "A silver tongue, talent for trouble, and all the luck in this universe."
Rose just smiled up at him before closing her eyes and resting her head against him. Sometimes, she didn't know who was luckier. Him or her. After all, she could have ended up in this parallel world and been completely alone. Sure, she had her parents.. But it was another universe. Nothing was quite the same. Not really. She'd never existed in this world before now. Pete had to make up some story about her being away at boarding school when the media began asking about her.
She would have lingered against him for a moment longer if the strange silence over the baby monitor hadn't caught her attention. She snatched the monitor from the kitchen counter and rolled her thumb along the volume wheel. Nothing.. Not even the sound of her little brother breathing. "oh god.. Tony?!" There was panic in her dark green eyes as she bolted up the stairs and into the spare room. The bed was empty. Rose immediatly ducked to look underneath to see if he was hiding. "Tony??"
Babysitting really wasn't the Doctor's forte. He wasn't particularly thrilled to have his Rose time cut short either, even if it was for another Tyler. Still, he kept his grumbling to himself. Chances were, nothing was wrong.
Following up after Rose at a slower pace, he was truly surprised to find the baby just missing. As if he had been spirited away from one of the haunts from Ghostbusters or perhaps a fairy that hadn't had the chance to leave a changeling behind since Rose noticed too soon.
It was a mystery, and the Doctor wanted it solved on that principle alone.
The fact Rose was clearly panicking just made him want to solve it as soon as possible.
Taking a deep breath, the Doctor frowned in thought before licking the side of the crib to confirm his initial assessment.
This was so very not of the good.
