Name:
Io
Age: Around eighteen Earth years, 3 Karlaithyan years.
Gender: Male.
Species: Karlaithyan.
Planet of Origin: Karlaithya.
Occupation: Lost.
Physical Description:
Io, while relatively good-looking, is rather plain in terms of a Karlaithyan. He has dark brown, nearly black, hair and standard issue bright purple eyes. Although on Earth and in other parts of the universe this may seem odd or unusual, on Karlaithya it’s akin to having brown eyes – nothing special. He has an identical twin brother and, until his brother attained a scar on his eyebrow, even their own family couldn’t tell them apart.
Despite this, there are ways to tell the twins apart. Io has slightly rounder cheeks than his brother, giving him a more innocent and trusting expression. Vega now has a scar on his eyebrow, causing him to have a thin line in the eyebrow.
He dresses modestly and in a very similar fashion as his brother. He wears long sleeves and pants, despite often being uncomfortable due to the immense heat of the planet. His homeworld is farther away from the sun, causing much cooler conditions that would be almost inhospitable to the unprepared human. When just around his brother or people he trusts, he wears short-sleeves and loose trousers.
Io holds himself confidently. He reaches just under six feet, with a firmly straight back and stiff shoulders. His English accent is distinctly from Oxbridge. The human that Io and Vega initiated the transference with – the fast process by which Karlaithyans telepathically learned from one another and other species – was a rather high-strung young man from thereabouts.
Personality:
Io is open-minded. It was something indoctrinated into him from a young age – his family was one of scientists, and so he grew very receptive to new ideas and concepts easily. He was always a very thoughtful and somewhat reserved child. He preferred listening to talking, especially as he enjoyed mulling over new information and concepts rather than responding immediately. He evaluates each viewpoint carefully and as fairly as he can, though biases exist even in the most vigilant of people.
He’s a knowledgeable person. Having been raised the way he was, he takes preference to facts. Because of this, when he offers up his opinion, it’s always based on facts or evidence. If he doesn’t know for sure what he’s talking about, then he’ll admit it without too much concern for his own pride. He doesn’t want to mislead people and he’d much rather be thought of as a fool than a liar. He takes initiative and actively uses his intelligence to confront challenges instead of passively responding to events.
As is a general trait of Karlaithyans, Io is curious, though he always keeps himself together so that neither he nor his brother, Vega, get injured or in trouble from his curiosity. He likes to ask the difficult questions, though it sometimes makes people aggressive towards him. He doesn’t like surface answers and superficial explanations. He isn’t afraid of disagreeing with popular opinion – he likes for his opinions and thoughts to be well-supported and come from thoughtful analysis rather than just mindlessly borrowing beliefs or going with the flow.
Io doesn’t like to get distracted by the details. He’s very organized in his view of things and insightful. He likes to get to the heart of an issue rather than get distracted by the details. When he’s confronted with a project or concept, he likes to see the bigger picture, though he’s also concerned with the details. He sees the “forest” and the “trees” equally, because without the trees you can’t have a forest. While he was in school, he was always the top performing due to his methodical obsession with perfection.
History:
As mentioned before, Io has an identical twin brother by the name of Vega. Io was born ninety-two seconds after his twin brother. They were born in the eighteenth calendar month – Menashevet – on the eighty-ninth day. They lived a rather uneventful life – they were incredibly close to one other, as twins generally are. As a young child, Io and Vega would only communicate to each other. They were hold hands often, interpreting words through the emotions that they could feel from one other. It was essentially like the Karlaithyan transference, though not to do with knowledge but rather feelings.
Io and Vega were inseparable. They were independent from their parents and older sister, preferring to do things their own way although they wanted to do them together. They were brought up speaking Linali, the language of the scientific and religious sect, although Io and Vega also taught themselves to speak Hinari, the language most artisans spoke. The twins did everything together – they ate together, studied together, took classes together, and even slept together.
They were brought up in a very scientific-oriented family. Their older sister, Seluna, was determined to be a genius. The twins thought of her as an airhead, but they wouldn’t say so aloud to anyone else. Their parents were also very well-respected in the scientific community. Their parents made annual pilgrimages to the Theofuges, the mountain ranges where the gods were rumored to live. A person could only make the pilgrimage after their third birthday as the route was very dangerous.
In school, the twins were generally thought of as rather popular due both to their charismatic personalities, high levels of intelligence, and their well-known family. On their third birthday, they were granted permission to make the pilgrimage to the Theofuges. However, before they completed it, they encountered a rather large spaceship. Vega, being the most curious of the pair, demanded that they go inside. After that… things didn’t go quite the way they planned as they were abducted. His brother remembers the rest of the story better.
