As he walked down the road Luke Smith smiled softly to himself. He fingered the small orb in his pockets and thought of his mother, Sarah Jane. He had gotten her a gift for no other reason than to say I love you. Well it was free because he found it on his recent mission against yet another race of aliens who invaded Earth. He shrugged and locked the memory of the mission in the back of his mind. He then turned the corner and walked right into a hard object. "Oh I am sorry my name is..." He didn't finish the sentence as he looked at the object. His eyes widened and his jaw dropped. "It can't be? It can't be what I think it is. I'm never wrong though!" He reached out a hand to touch the object but stopped just short and then pulled his hand box. He knew that touching the object would be bad and shook his head, he then backed up.
The Doctor walked along the sidewalk, occasionally looking at the screen of the strange contraption he had rigged up to track a certain time anomaly. Sure it made him look like a little strange with a small typewriter mixed with what looked like a WII controller, and other odds and ends, strapped to his torso. But when did the Doctor care about looks?
He passed a street sign, momentarily glancing up at it. "Bannerman road.." Sarah Jane lived here, if he remembered correctly. Maybe he would pop in for a quick visit after he sorted out this 'time anomaly'. It had been awhile sense their last visit anyway, well you could call it a visit it was more like a quick hi and goodbye. That was when Sarah thought he was dead, technically he was dead but lets not get into technicalities right now.
He heard a loud ding come from his time anomaly finding machine, and quickly looked at the readings. Whatever this time anomaly was, it was close. And gearing up for something. With no time to lose the Doctor set out at a run towards the signal, he turned the corner and almost toppled over a teenage boy. Without apologizing, he pushed the boy behind him and walked up to the time anomaly. Luckily it was just a med pack from the 21st century and nothing serious. He patted down his pockets, before whirling out his sonic and pointing it at the med pack. The sonic let out a high pitched noise, then the med pack disappeared in a whirl of blue light.
The Doctor smiled smugly to himself, putting his Sonic screwdriver back in his inside pocket, and turning back to the boy. The Doctor did a double take, then smiled widely running up to sweep him into a hug. "Luke! I haven't seen you in ages! You've grown, School going well? How old are you now? How's your mother?" The Doctor let go of Luke looking him up and down, while smiling like a six year old who had just bumped into his best friend after school.
Suddenly Luke is bowled over by a rush of bowtie and brown hair and then the med kit does a fade away. Luke scrambles to his feet and looks at the man, his jaw then for the first time in a while dropped a few inches as the man in a red bowtie turned to him. Then before he regained his senses he is enveloped in a massive hug. "Doctor! Oh it has been so long. I am doing well, so is my mum. I am entering my second year of Oxford." He looked behind the Doctor at the location where the med kit was. "Well can you help me actually? I need to stop that med kit it's healing all of the planet changing the Earth's history."
The Doctor smiled down at Luke. Collage already, he made a mental note to visit more often before Luke was any older. He frowned slightly when Luke mentioned what the med pack was doing to Earths history. If it was causing something that big, his machine should of picked up the reading. He slapped the side of his machine in annoyance, causing it to make a din. Oh now it had the right readings. Typical.
"Of course I’ll help you." The Doctor grinned at Luke, gesturing for him to follow him back to the TARDIS. He smiled silently to himself, Luke hadn't seen the inside of his TARDIS yet and he was excited to see how he would react. They were all different, with the exception of the unforgettable 'its bigger on the inside' comment of course. He pauses in front of the TARDIS doors, his hand on the doorknob. If anything happened to Luke while in his care, Sarah Jane would kill him. Slowly, and painfully. He turned his head to look at Luke more closely. He was a smart kid, and he had been in a lot of dangerous situations with Sarah. If worse came to worse, he knew that Luke would be okay.
Smiling, he unlocked the door pushing it in, and walking in. He bounded up to the counsel, flicking a few switches so the lights located at the top of the main counsel and around the ceiling flickered on. And of course the good ole TARDIS let out an ominous mechanical moan. Always the over dramatic. He patted the counsel absently, turning back to face Luke a knowing smile on his face. "Welcome to the TARDIS, I'm sure your mum's told you stories."
Luke smiles and follows the Doctor into his TARDIS. He grins widely at the sight of the console room. "It's exactly like my mom described it. Well sort of, okay not really, but it's just as awesome. I often wondered if it was so. I can't believe I'm here now, thank you Doctor." Luke walks to the TARDIS console and looks at the buttons. "We can go anywhere in time and space in here! We can see the formation of the world, the sun's birth" his voice suddenly goes from excited chatter to a soft sad reflection tone "or when the Bane come to Earth. I could...could somehow save everyone...no, no we can't do that can we. It would create a paradox." He sighs and then suddenly smiles. "But no reason we can't move forward. We need to track the disappearing med kit! So can your TARDIS do it? I have some scans from the med kit on my watch scanner."
The Doctor smiled listening to Luke's excited ramble. He loved bringing new people into the TARDIS, even if the TARDIS didn't. Each time was different, you never knew what they would say. With the exception of 'its bigger on the inside' of course. Humans always had the funny little habit of pointing out the obvious, that was one of the reasons why he loved them.
He gave Luke a scandalized look, when he asked if the TARDIS could track the med kit. What did he think she was? A toaster? "Of course she can! The TARDIS can do anything." He patted one of the panels affectionately, letting the TARDIS know that Luke didn't really mean for any feelings to be hurt. He extended his hand for Luke's watch, so he could insert the readings in the TARDIS mainframe. Once he had it, he quickly set it on one of the panels reaching around it to press different buttons, and pull numerous levers. A few seconds later, the TARDIS let out a low hum of understanding, followed by the familiar wheezing groaning sound of take off.
Luke flinches ever so slightly at this and looked down. In an apologetic voice he spoke to his shoes "I'm sorry Doctor. I didn't mean to be rude to the TARDIS. I wasn't trying to be bad. Is she mad at me?" He looks up at the Doctor scared he might kick him off the TARDIS angry at him. He flinched at the thought of how angry his mum would be at him for angering the Doctor. He quickly looked down again ashamed for how his first meeting was going. "I will try not to do it again. I was just unsure sense even Mr. Smith is having trouble tracking this technology. I didn't want this to cause trouble." He looked back to the Doctor. "Did I anger you?"
Luke's heart felt like it was going to burst from his chest. He felt pain from how fast it was beating and his eyes watered. He had never cried, except for a few times, he didn't like it. For one he didn't understand tears, for another he had seen how they hurt the people around him. So as he cried in front of the Doctor it just added another layer to his shame. "I'm sorry Doctor I don't know why I'm crying." Yet again he hated how much he didn't understand about being human. He forced himself to stop crying and focus on the task. "Shall we track the signal and find this thing' that is controlling it?" He hoped the Doctor was still going to help and added. "That is if you still want to help me." He couldn't hide the hope in his voice and hoped it was enough.
“No need to be sorry…” The doctor looked at Luke, with a look of concern. He forgot how sensitive teenage boys seemed to get, take Adric for example. He never figured out what made Adric act the way he did… maybe he had been pushing him too far. Or maybe it was just the shock of his, at the time, new regeneration. He pushed that memory to the back of his mind, he wouldn't make the same mistake twice… this time. “Anger me…?” The Doctor stared at Luke for a moment, half to give him some time to calm down, and for the Doctor to pick his next words carefully.
“You’re crying because you’re upset. I’m sorry for snapping at you Luke, I didn't mean it.” He gave Luke a calming smile, he felt an urge to give him a comforting hug to match the smile. But he was keeping his distance, for comfort’s sake. His male companion tended to be a little…. Snippy when it came to hugs. “Of course I still want to help you!” He pressed a single button on the counsel, earning a higher pitched hum from the TARDIS signaling her understanding. “Give her a few minutes to hone into the med pack’s signal.” He walked over to look, putting an arm around his shoulder and leading him towards the TARDIS kitchen.
“Might as well have a quick cup of tea, before heading out.” No matter what incarnation the Doctor was in, he always made time for tea. And jelly babies, always jelly babies…
Luke looked at the Doctor and nodded his head. If the Doctor said there was no reason to be sorry then he meant it. Luke allowed the Doctor’s voice to calm him down. Of course it wasn’t tell now that he even had realized how worked up he was. He allowed himself to look around a bit as well. The TARDIS was truly one of the most incredible things he had seen, and that was saying a lot considering where he had come into consciousness. Not to mention what he had seen while living with his mother.
“Anger me…?”
“Yes anger you. You seemed to be angry that I doubted your TARDIS Doctor.” The small boy looked at the Doctor; he hanged his head a bit. “I didn’t mean to seem rude. I’m just not accustomed to this type of ship, for obvious reasons.” Speaking of things he wasn’t accustomed to Luke wasn’t accustomed to being wrong about science, and so this was a new thing for him as well. The social wrong he had committed not so much, apologizing for getting something like this wrong wasn’t anything new for the youngest Smith.
“You’re crying because you’re upset. I’m sorry for snapping at you Luke, I didn't mean it.”
“I’m upset?” Luke was so shocked by this he almost missed the Doctor’s apology. “Oh you don’t need to apologize to me Doctor. You were defending your ship. It is alright.” Luke was so amazed he then looked at the Doctor in even more shock. “I’ve never been upset before. Is that a normal thing to happen?” He sent the Doctor a quizzical stare asking for explanation.
“Of course I still want to help you!” He pressed a single button on the counsel, earning a higher pitched hum from the TARDIS signaling her understanding. “Give her a few minutes to hone into the med pack’s signal.”
Luke let out a sigh of relief, well a sigh anyway he didn’t know what relief was. “Thank you Doctor. I don’t think I’d be able to solve this on my own.” He smiled a bit at the console. “And thank your TARDIS for me. I am so glad that we can solve this problem together.” He allowed the Doctor to lead him towards wherever they were going. If his mother trusted the man then so would he. Besides the man looked like a professor, or scholar, so he must be trustworthy.
“Might as well have a quick cup of tea, before heading out.”
Luke nodded his head eagerly and gave the Doctor one of his small shy smiles. “Yes tea sounds very good. What kind do you have?” Luke had recently learned there were many different types of tea out there and he was eager to try some of the different types. Tea after all was one of his favorite drinks, mainly because it was one of the things his mom could actually make, sort of. “Where are we going?” He made sure to memorize the way back to the console room in case something happened and he and the Doctor got separated.
“Its completely human.” He smiled lightly at Luke. Again he couldn't help but feel fond for him, the Doctor always had a soft spot for children. Especially those who didn't quite fit in with others. “I think the TARDIS heard you.” The TARDIS vibrated slightly under Luke's feet, in a sort of 'your welcome' manner. He patted one of her panels as a thank you for making Luke feel at home, before steering him towards the kitchen.
“Any kind you want.” The TARDIS literary had every sort of tea you could think of in its cupboards... if he remembered to stock them. He probably did. “We're going to the kitchen!” He beamed down at him happily, before letting go of his shoulders to walk ahead. He wasn't always allowed to make tea in the TARDIS kitchens.. mostly because he had a bad habit of setting it on fire. It wasn't his fault, the stove was just faulty. He stopped in front of a violet door, pushing it open. The door itself was originally white to match the rest of the TARDIS, but the Doctor was bored and.. well one thing led to the next and he painted all the doors in the TARDIS violet.
He put the kettle on the stove top, setting it to high before taking down two mugs from one of the cupboards. The TARDIS kitchen looked like any other kitchen, apart from the slightly sophisticated appliances, and the atom splitter in the corner. Which made really good toast by the way. He gestured for Luke to take a seat at the table, and fished around the kitchen for jammy dodgers. He knew he had some, unless Clara hid them as some sort of joke. No one should mess with his dodgers.
“Its completely human.” He smiled lightly at Luke. Again he couldn't help but feel fond for him, the Doctor always had a soft spot for children. Especially those who didn't quite fit in with others. “I think the TARDIS heard you.”
Luke smiles at the console and grins at the vibrations the ship sent through him. He then looked at the Doctor happy he had gotten something right before he wiped the tears from his face. “Thank you Doctor. Thank you TARDIS.” Ya it felt weird for him talking to a ship but he would do it more if he had to, he was talking with and traveling with the Doctor. He couldn’t wait to tell his mum, but first he would enjoy and learn from the adventure with the Doctor he was about to have.
“Any kind you want.” The TARDIS literary had every sort of tea you could think of in its cupboards... if he remembered to stock them. He probably did. “We're going to the kitchen!”
Luke grinned with pleasure at the thought of a forthcoming tea time with the Doctor. To be able to have any type of tea he wanted made him want to try them all. For scientific purposes of course, he’d never admit to himself he just flat out liked tea, preferably when his mother didn’t make it. His mother was a lot of things but cook was not one of them. As they passed the many doors that were painted an odd color for doors he looked at the Doctor confused. “Why are the doors that color?” He was curious and confused by this. “Shouldn’t they be blue or maybe even grey?” He had to admit though; the doors certainly fit the Doctor. “Don’t change them though. They fit you.” He continued to follow the Doctor taking everything in.
