He didn’t understand why there had to be so many fireworks, and he didn’t understand Nina’s obsession with them. Sebastian kept his eyes trained on his book, headphones in his ears to keep the noise from the party from bothering him too much. He’d lost his mother to the crowd ages ago, and knowing his luck he’d have to find his own way home. It wouldn’t be the first time she’d gone home with someone without a second thought to him. At least she was there for him when it counted, and it wasn’t like she was always neglectful.
Pay attention where you’re going, Nina interrupted his thoughts and Sebastian stopped walking just as he crashed into someone. He snapped his book closed, stumbling backwards. I don’t think she’s human, Nina warned him, and Sebastian held his backpack in front of him, like it would be an actual decent shield in the face of an alien extracting revenge. Now you just look weird. Straighten your back, lower your backpack, and apologize, salad brain.
“My brain isn’t salad,” Sebastian said automatically, then shut his mouth tightly as he complied with the rest of Nina’s instructions lest she decide to scald him again. The woman in front of him looked human enough — bright red hair, purple streaks, very hip — but Nina was the expert and not him. “Um, I mean, sorry for— running into you,” he stammered, clawing at his neck anxiously. What if she had aggressive alien powers and were going to kill him? “I wasn’t… um… p-paying… attention…?” he trailed off, distracted by Nina hissing directions to stop stuttering into his ear. “Did I hurt you?” he asked.
Oracle hadn’t been paying attention to where she was going either, mostly wandering, seems that was all she had been doing lately.
Snapping out of her own thoughts when the kid bumped into her she stepped back looking him over “My brain isn’t salad,” Oracle tilted her head not understanding what he was talking about. Oracle started to ask what he was talking about but stopped.
“I wasn’t… um… p-paying… attention…? Did I hurt you?” She watched him for a second, he seemed distracted, Oracle knew that feeling all too well “No, I’m fine. Takes a little bit more than someone bumping into me.” she tried to put on her most disarming smile “Are you ok?”.
Oracle couldn’t quite put her finger on it, but something about him made her hair stand up.

Nina, although Sebasian was loathe to admit it, was right. He seemed weird — he could practically see the woman thinking it. The tilt of the head, the way she looked him over, the way she watched him — Sebastian could feel himself beginning to breathe far too fast and far too shallow, and hugged his arms around his chest, bending over. CONCENTRATE ON WHAT SHE’S SAYING, Nina barked and Sebastian jumped, jerking up to stare at the woman with wide eyes. Why aren’t you breathing?! Do that, too, salad brain.
“O-oh, that’s good, I f-figured I wouldn’t… have hurt you, because I’m not… I-I didn’t mean to, and… you’re… y-you don’t…?” Sebastian stammered, his own thoughts jumbling messily with Nina shouting orders. “D-don’t look weak, is what I was… saying,” he finished finally, patting himself on the shoulder, congratulating him on at least finally getting a semi-coherent sentence out. Nina did not seem nearly as into this accomplishment.
Was he okay? Sebastian let out a nervous laugh, scratching his neck with trembling fingers. Well, besides the djinn trying to get him through an anxiety attack by berating him and the fact he kept forgetting to breathe. He waved a hand vaguely around them. “Crowded. I’m not… good with crowds,” he laughed again, aiming for ‘nonchalance’ and hitting ‘hysterical’ instead. “But I’m good! Okay! Never! Been! Better!”
“Crowded. I’m not… good with crowds,” Oracle watched as the kid wrapped hugged his arms around his chest “But I’m good! Okay! Never! Been! Better!” reaching down gently Oracle took ahold of the kid's arm she could tell he was lying.
Trying to keep his attention on her, Oracle said very calmly making sure she never lost eye contact trying to will him to focus "What's your name, short shit?" Oracle figured if she could keep his attention she could navigate him out of the crowd some he'd be able to calm down.
