“I didn’t know him until he came to my home world, Messaline,” Jenny frowned, “you probably know more about Time Lords then I do, I didn’t even know I was one until Donna figured it out. I know there was a great war and that they were destroyed, accept The Doctor and that is pretty much it… you mentioned regeneration earlier… what is that?” She asked, remembering the horrific conditions of the world she had been born or more inappropriately termed, created to.
Jenny smiled at Jack’s gallantry and got out of the car and took Jacks offered arm, “Yes, let’s…”
"Regeneration," Jack began thoughtfully. "Well, as far as I know it's something that happens when a Time Lord is on the brink of death. They can go into a Regenerative State. They change and cheat death. Becoming a new person even while they still have all the memories of their last incarnation. I don't know how many times they can do it. I've never asked. But I've seen the Doctor in two of his. Both were pretty good looking too..." he winked at her as they stepped through the door to the all-night Chinese joint.
The place was brightly lit and clean. Grey walls with various Oriental art decorating the walls. There were a few tables with chairs and a counter with a man in his mid-thirties behind the counter reading. Behind him was a lit menu that had pictures of the various dishes offered.
"Let me know when you're ready to order," the man at the counter said without looking up. "We make it to order so I'll take a few minutes."
Jack smiled and nodded. "Thanks!" he turned to Jenny. "I'm going to make a quick phone call, you figure out what looks good, okay?"
He took a few steps away and pulled out his phone, calling the first person on his speed dial. Ianto Jones.
“hmmmm, he probably should have mentioned that,” Jenny said as Jack explained the process of regeneration as he knew it. “Maybe that is why I survived.” Jenny gave a slight shrug, “I guess I’ll just have to ask him whenever I see him again.” Jenny was determined that no matter what, their paths would cross again.
Jenny looked around the restaurant with wide eyes. She had never seen anything remotely like it before in her life. She looked at everything, from the paper oriental lamps, to the red and gold decorations on the walls. Her eyes practical feasting on new sites, sounds, and smells she had never encountered before as the man behind the counter explained that the orders would take a little while to prepare.
Jack had turned to Jenny and said he had to make a quick phone call… Jenny had no idea what he was talking about but she nodded her head in assent. She figured that it was something important and she wasn’t gonna let herself get in the way of whatever business he had to do. “Ok,” Jenny said in an agreeable tone.
Jenny’s eyes fastened on the pictures above the counter aglow from their backlighting. She carefully inspected each and every picture and decided on something with lots of green and orange vegetables, with what looked like some sort of white meat. But she kept her eyes glued to the pictures even after she decided, to let Jack have however much time he needed to make his phone call.
The sound of his mobile ringing within the usually silent spans of the archives startled Ianto. Instantly recognizing the ringtone Jack had set for himself after work last week the Welshman sighed and answered. "Hello, Jack."
"Hey, Hot Stuff. How's my Yan?" Jack asked as he smiled widely at the sound of the Welsh vowels, even over the phone. "I'm at our favorite Chinese Take Away. What would you like? Oh! And you'll need to get to the main floor. We've got a ... guest coming to stay with us."
Ianto bit back a smile and looked around the archives. Despite having been near pristine earlier the tea boy of Torchwood 3 felt it could use a bit of sprucing up. After all, there needed to be ample space for their new acquisitions. "I'm fine, Jack."
The mention of food caused the brunet's stomach to growl loudly. He had skipped lunch and dinner working on various projects at the Hub. "The usual sounds wonderful, and who is our guest?"
Ianto hoped he didn't sound rude, but it would be wise to be a bit weary of who their fearless leader would consider a 'guest.'
"Well, it looks like we've got a lovely little ... female," he emphasized the word 'female', "Time Lord on our hands. She says she knows the Doctor. Her ship crashed here. We'll need a response team out for the morning, but it's locked up at the moment."
Jack ran a hand through his hair and looked over at Jenny. He ran through a mental list of things they would need to do by morning.
"We're gonna go with movie props. For the crash site. And she's very cooperative. I ran a scan with my Wrist Strap... it says she's a Time Lord. But we'll take the usual precautions. She's got a cut on her arm and leg. I bandaged them but... better safe than sorry, yeah?"
"All right," Ianto turned to make his way back up to the main area of the Hub. "We all can talk further over dinner. I'll give Owen a call as well to see if he wouldn't mind taking a look at her injuries."
"Okay. I ... I love you, Yan. And I'll see you at dinner," Jack finished quickly before his cheeks could heat up any more than he could already feel them. "See ya soon."
He hung up and turned back to Jenny, face blanking back to his normally, semi-flirty setting.
Ianto stared for a moment at his phone once Jack had hung up on him and the back lighting had faded away on the screen. He must have misheard the flirtatious man. Brushing the three little words off, at least for the moment, Ianto busied himself with making coffee. Jack will be holding his hand out in silent request for a cup as soon as he returns. Of that, Ianto is certain.
Jack shook himself as he closed the phone. He couldn't believe what he'd just said, but it felt right. And that niggling feeling was finally calming down a little. The one that had been on him since he'd figured out his feelings for Ianto. He'd known he was in love with the Welshman for a while, even though he'd never said the words. His heart felt a little lighter as he looked over at Jenny.
New day. New beginings.
"So, what did you want to get?" he asked, grin just a little bigger, and happier as he walked over to the blonde. He turned to the man at the counter and smiled. "I'd liked two number threes, and two orders of the Crab Ragoons and whatever the lady here would like!"
Jenny glanced once in a while out of the corner of her eye as Jack talked into what appeared to be some sort of communication device, ‘must be this cell phone device he was referring to.’ Jenny didn’t miss the flush of color the un-expectantly flashed acrossed his face, but she pretended that she didn’t notice, her eyes finding something else to stare at while she continued waiting for him to be done.
When Jack was done and when he asked her what she wanted she flashed him one of her bubbly smiles, after Jack ordered she looked at the man across the counter and then looked up and pointed to number 5, “Number 5 looks good, I’ll get that one, thanks,” she said giving the man on the other side of the counter a smile as well.
Jenny wanted to bombard Jack with all sorts of questions about the planet, this Earth. She wanted to know everything there was to know, about the people, about the societies they had, the planet itself, she was interested in learning about the fauna and the animal species of the world, their art, science, culture, everything. But somehow she decided that the nice man behind the counter would get alittle suspicious of all her odd questions. If these people didn’t know about aliens and Jack wanted the humans to be kept in the dark about the subject, then Jenny would hold off until the humans were not around.
But she was going to ask him something, her curiosity was just too acute. “So, Jack, tell me about you now,” she asked, her eyes bright, glittering, and large with an intense curiosity that just couldn’t be stopped.
Jack smiled and shook his head a little as he paid the man. He pulled Jenny gently with him as they sat down at one of the tables. After sitting across from the young woman he took a deep breath and sighed.
"Me? You wanna know about me..." he looked off into the distance for a few more moments. "My story is a long, very complicated one. I'm not actually from this time, so I understand people that are ... far from home. Or haven't found some place to call home. Made me a good agent and then a good leader. I was an agent for Torchwood Three for a while and then one day... at the turn of the millennium here on Earth I became the head of Torchwood three."
He felt the weight of his many years weigh on his mind and heart as he trailed off for a moment. He let his memory move to the many people he had known over the course of his long life.
He shook himself free of the memories and looked up at Jenny again. He smiled widely. "Sorry about that. What about you? I hardly know anything about you."
Jenny shrugged slightly and at the same wished that her life was a long story and was complicated. “There really isn’t anything to tell, I was created one year, one month, 15 days, 7 hrs, 28 min, and 30…. 32, seconds ago on Messaline during a time of great war in an underground complex. Not enough time to live much of a life. I was born a soldier, as is everyone created there. The planet goes through about 20 generations every 24hrs. So without the creation of new troops the people would die out fairly quickly.”
Jenny thought back to that time and gave a small sad smile, “Dad was there at the beginning. He was the first person I saw in fact. Within a single day The Doctor managed to stop the war and rejuvenate the planets toxic atmosphere. There was an accident, I got shot and The Doctor thought I was dead. So he left me behind with the people there. Shortly after that I jumped on a ship and took off, making my way here.”
Jenny gave him a smile, Very short, very uncomplicated.”

Jack froze as Jenny's words sunk in. "Your... dad. Are you telling me the Doctor is your father?"
He hadn't felt this much shock in a very long time. He was pretty certain he'd seen almost everything. But this was new and shocking. He let it all sink in before looking at Jenny again.
He could see it now. They eyes, facial structure, the smile. Even the attitude seemed to bleed through. He smiled.
"Well, then we should see if we can get a hold of your father. Seems he's a bit late for your first birthday party. We need to hold him accountable for that. And it's good to hear he's still out in the universe, helping to make things better. Helping people." He sighed wistfully. "Alright, food should be done..." he looked over at the counter and saw the bag waiting for them. "And we're off."
After stopping by the counter; where the cashier was back to sitting behind the counter reading, he headed for the door. Offering his arm to Jenny again and helping her into the SUV.
He made sure Jenny was strapped in before taking off again. He wanted to get back to the HUB and see Ianto after his little phone confession he wanted to make sure the other an didn't think he was joking.
Jenny’s smile brightened, “Well, yes. Technically, biologically, yes, he’s my dad,” she said. She could remember it well, the look on her father’s face as she stepped from the machine that created her; as if he had just been slapped.
“So, he saves people a lot then? I thought so… he seemed very good at it. Making up brilliant plans like a proper general,” she said cheerily. "well, besides his dislike of guns... he reeallly didn't like me running around with one."
As Jack got up and grabbed the bag, Jenny gave the place on last look before taking Jack's offered arm and went with him back out to the SUV. Fascinated by every little unfamiliar thing on the way; she decided that Earth was brilliant and she would be more than happy to stay awhile.
In no time Jenny was back in the SUV and strapped in and Jack was once again driving off through the night. Jenny watched in fasciation at all the buildings, the people they passed, the street lamps, the trees, even some small fluffy looking animal the scaled a fence. It all seemed so bright and shiny.
“Is the whole planet like this? So full of life and people?” Jenny asked conversationally.
"Most of it is full of life. But there are parts that aren't like this anymore. Places where people have taken advantage of the planet they live on. And places where death is the only thing you can find. But it's getting better. Humans... for all that they lack can be truly compassionate."
He deftly moved through the light traffic and into Cardiff. After a few minutes he turned on the radio, fairly quiet. "Do you like music? I do, so I figure if you've never been here you should try and enjoy the music. We'll be there shortly."
Ten minutes later they arrived at the parking garage for the HUB. Jack parked, grabbed their food, and again offered his arm to Jenny. "This way to Torchwood Three, milady," he said in his most dramatic voice.
Jenny’s eyes continued to watch the world outside of the SUV with interest, “They have no idea how lucky they are,” she said softly.
Music, the term was a familiar one within the memories given to her by the machine, but she had never heard it before so she was unsure as to whether she liked it or not. “I’ve never heard music before…” her voice trailed off while she listened to the radio. Within just those few moments of riding down the road that she did indeed like music as well as everything else she had encountered so far.
Jenny once exited the SUV and again accepted an offered arm with a smile, deciding that it must be some sort of Earthling custom. Torchwood three, Jenny thought as she went with Jack into the unknown. I wonder what happened to the other two.
Jack walked Jenny to the fountain and winked. "I'm taking you through the visitor's entrance," he said as the platform sank into the ground and took them to the main level of the HUB slowly.
Jack watched the young woman take in everything around her for a moment before his own eyes looked for Ianto. He was really looking forward to seeing the Welshman again. It had been a long day, and they had hardly seen each other. Both busy working on paperwork so they could enjoy their planned date in two days.
Even if a lot could happen in two days. They still tried.
He laughed at himself and looked around again. "I'm home!" he called, loud and clear with a grin.
Jenny was impressed by the visitor’s entrance. She had never been on ground that sank into the ground before and watched it in interest as well as what was hiding just underneath the surface. It was an expansive, cavernous underground complex, with ceilings that were much higher than the ones she was use to on her home world.
When Jack called out into the underground complex, Jenny detected the reverberated echo that commenced throughout the place. Jenny waited to see if anyone materialized from the depths of this underground world of Jack’s. “This is Torchwood Three? Impressive…” she stated; her eyes ever wandering, ever examining, and ever learning.
The technological aspects of the place did not escape her either. She could see it in just about everything, including the lift itself. Jenny thought it was pure genius.
As Jack's voice rang throughout the Hub Ianto finished pouring the good Captain a cup of coffee. Within moments he approached Jack and Jenny with a polite smile, taking Jack's coat and the take away bags before handing the other man the coffee. “Wecome back, and hello. Owen is on his way.” Ianto made a bit of a face at the mention of the doctor, making it clear their conversation on the phone wasn't exactly pleasant. The Welshman turned to Jenny, “would you care for some coffee or something else to drink?”
