Everyone left him in the end. Because they had to, because they should, because they forgot him... there were so many, many reasons. In the end, he loved each of his companions in some way. And in the end, they broke his hearts.
So he was travelling alone. There is a human saying, better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all.
The Doctor lived by another saying right now. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
He couldn’t take another heartsbreak. Not now, he needed.. he needed time. How ironic was that! Time! Ha. As if it was a finite resource when the truth was, he almost had too much time.
Well.. he would just have to handle it, wouldn’t he? Him and the TARDIS, on their own, like it should be.
Note: This is Holly’s portrayal of the Tenth Doctor, not Phantom’s. xx
This is so boring...Why are we even here anyway? Alora was standing with her classmates, a pout on her face as she was looking around at her surroundings, trying to find something, ANYTHING, to entertain her. Unfortunately, there wasn't much. All her classmates seemed interested in what their teacher was trying to show them, or at least, they were acting like they were interested. To be honest, Alora wasn't even sure what the teacher was lecturing about anyways. She would have tried to make conversation with one of the others, but they always told her to be quiet because they were 'good students.'
She watched as her teacher continued to go on and on, never seeming to stop, until he turned his back on the group to lead them somewhere else. Alora's eyes grew wide; this was her chance. Looking around at all her fellow students, Alora stood still, letting them make their way around her, like a river rushing around a boulder, until they were all in front of her and walking away. A big, bright smile grew on her face before she quickly dashed away. She wasn't sure where they were, but that made her want to explore all the more. She dashed as quickly as her legs would take her until she reached the edge the city limits where the dome surrounded and protected the city. Alora rested her hands on the dome, standing on her tip toes and leaning this way and that as she tried to see everything that was out past the dome. However, just as her curiosity was peaking, a very angry voice came from behind her, "Alora! What do you think you're doing?! You know you aren't supposed to leave the group!" However, just as the teacher was starting to make his way towards her and drag her back to the Acadamy with the rest of the studends, the ground beneath their feet began to quake.
Without even giving it a second thought, Alora quickly abandoned her classmates and b-lined it for home. She ran and ran until she came to the door, threw it open, and saw her parents huddled together. "Mom, Dad! What's going on!?"
"Alora!" Her mother quickly ran up to her, grasping her tightly in her arms, "Thank goodness you're alright!" However, as quickly as she held her, she took her by the shoulders and gave her a stern look, "We have to go. Come with me."
Alora's expression quickly became confused as her mother took her hand and dragged her out of the door, leading her somewhere. Where exactly, Alora wasn't sure. "Mom? Where are we going? Why isn't Dad coming along?" Her mother didn't even glace back as the continued to make their way hastily through the city, "A war has begun, Alora. Your father is going to stay behind and watch the house while I get you safe."
"Safe!? What about you two?! What's going to happ-"
"There's no time to explain, sweetheart! Just trust me!" The pair continued to run through the city as loud explosions and lights flashed throughout the city as they did their best to duck and not get killed in the process of where ever it was Alora's mother was taking her.
But it wasn't long until they reached the Time Vortex. Alora's mother let go of her hand, giving her daughter one last look, "Do you trust me?" Alora gave a quick nod, her stomach doing summersaults. Her mother nodded, taking hold of her hands, "Listen, Alora. You need to jump into the portal. I know it sounds crazy and don't give me that look, but our TARDIS wouldn't be able to break the atmosphere and survive. This is the only way to make sure you'll be safe. I can think of at least one person who will be able to find you." Before Alora even had time to argue, her mother caught her off guard and shoved Alora into the Time Vortex.
The last thing she saw was a look of fear and love on her mother's face.
He'd been alone for.. oh.. a while now. The Doctor had given up on tracking his age or anything like it to any real degree ages ago. Anyway, knocking about the universe on his own wasn't too bad. There were still civilizations to save, creatures to defeat, and an awful lot of running to do.
Bloody hell, now he was thinking about Jenny. Of all the things his vast Time Lord brain could pick to focus on, it had to be losing yet another child.
Bad enough that he had killed so many of his family, killed his entire race by making the only choice he could.
The universe over the Homeworld.
He had tried to convince them, of course, to leave, or at least to stand against Rassilon's madness. But it was like talking to a brick wall. Some, because they were too much like him, determined to stand for what they believed in, others because they wanted nothing more than to remove the 'taint' his presence in the Family brought.
Time Lords and their politics, honestly. The fact he'd had natural born children was strange enough; the fact he frequently ignored the laws of time and meddled with history was a black mark.
Deciding the best thing to do was seek a distraction, the Doctor had just moved to the helmic regulator when the TARDIS shook.
Her mind could barely process what was going on around her. All she could see was bright flashes of color racing past her as if to try to escape the past and hurdle itself towards the future. Or was it her that was moving through time and space, everything standing still while she was the one moving through it? She began to wonder if this was what the TARDIS saw while it was throwing itself through time.
Alora's stomach began to do summer-saults; the fact she was moving so quickly not only made her queasy, but she was starting to get a headache because it seemed almost too much to comprehend. There was so much to see, so many things all happening at once. She had to close her eyes tight just to make sure she didn't get sick. And just as she closed her eyes, she felt the world stop moving as her backside connected to the floor of something.
"Ugh...oww... Alora rubbed her lower back, "What happened? And where...am I...?" The girl's eyes slowly opened as she jaw dropped; she was in a TARDIS! But how did they make it off the home world when her parents couldn't? However, that question was quickly answered when she turned her head around and saw a face she had been shown and told about many a times, but many didn't speak of. Alora quickly jumped up off the ground and hurdled herself at the man, her arms quickly wrapping around his neck as a large smile adorned her lips, "Granddad!
The TARDIS, his TARDIS was shaking. That was distinctly not good. The last thing she needed was another Titanic incident. Clinging to the console through the first shock wave, he muttered, “What?”
The Doctor quickly jabbed on an internal scanner, and squinted at the readout. If he didn’t know any better… he’d say the TARDIS had just dragged itself around a hole in the schism.
“What!?”
That wasn’t possible, of course it wasn’t. There must be some logical explanation that didn’t involve defying the sanctity of time streams or being entirely too confusing to be probable. Ha! That last would be great, wouldn’t it? Perhaps it was just some random fluctuation, like the Rift, and somehow the TARDIS had been drawn to it?
Before he could puzzle too much longer, two things happened. First, a young teenaged female appeared in his TARDIS. This was not entirely out of the ordinary, but the Doctor had only had a stranger appear in his TARDIS once before in this life, aside from that… well, it had been a long time if ever. Second, recovering far faster than he did, the girl launched herself at him for a hug calling him Granddad.
Alora was so happy, she could cry. She had heard stories about her grandfather, how powerful and eccentric he was, but also about how loving and fragile he was as well. However, those stories always ended with 'but you'll never meet him and you shouldn't because he's a bad influence.' The same old lecture every time. But what the adults didn't know was that that only made her want to meet him more. How could she not? He had been everywhere, seen EVERYTHING! She wanted to do the exact same thing. Alora had been compared to him so many times, it only seemed right to get the chance to hug him as she was doing now.
However, after holding him for a little while she quickly let him go and beamed up at him, "Oh it's so good to see you! I've been told so many stories but I never thought I would actually MEET you! This is brilliant!" She quickly turned on her heels and looked around the TARDIS again, "Your TARDIS is so beautiful! Mom and Dad's isn't nearly as...hmm...well aged?" Alora quickly began to zip around the place, touching and staring at things.
She'd walk over to a lever, or a button, or anything flashing, point at it, and ask "Can I pull this? Oh! Or maybe I can push this? Or or maybe I could touch this?!" Everything she ran into, she asked if she could touch it or pull it or push it, anything to interact with her grandfather's TARDIS and make sure it was real.
She turned around again to face her grandfather and saw the handle of something. Quickly running over to whatever it was, Alora bent down, grabbed a hold of the handle, and brought up a rubber mallet. A devilish, excited smile grew onto her lips, "Can I use this on something?"
All the Doctor really heard was a stream of chatter. It wasn't that he couldn't have focused if he wanted to, it was that he was much more focused on the far more important question of 'how by the Nine Gallifreys did she get here!?'
It wasn't until the girl started wandering around wanting to mess about with the TARDIS that he was distracted from his mental calculations. She was apparently the child of someone who knew him. Someone with a TARDIS that knew him?
If this was humany him and Rose's daughter, he might be sick.
Can I use this on something?
Grabbing the mallet from her with an impatient huff, the Doctor gave her a stern look. "I'll use it on you if you don't stay put."
Still, he wasn't the sort to get all bent out of shape from the actions of the young - not now that he was so very old, anyway. Gently, he placed his hands on both sides of her temple and closed his eyes.
"Try to stay still," he coached, slipping into just the entry way of her mind and taking in the images from the contact.
Alora couldn't help herself; she was excited! This was a dream come true for her! How could she possibly keep still? However, when he gently put his hands on her temples, she knew that he wanted to know where she was from and new it would be far too long and too hard to explain by just telling him. And if she did just tell him, there was a chance he wouldn't believe her, so it was better to show and tell than just to tell.
The young woman closed her eyes, recalling everything she had just left behind. She thought of Gallifrey, the tall, glassy buildings, of being a child and growing up on the planet with her parents by her side. She thought of being in class and how absolutely bored she was as she listened to the teach drone on and on about absolutely nothing. Her mind then drifted to her running up against the dome, staring out and wondering what was out there.
Then suddenly, her attention shifted to the ground shaking, the looks on her classmate's faces and the teacher, how scared she was and how quickly she ran home, about finding her parents wrapped in each other's arms, then how her mother grabbed her, took her to the Time Vortex, and pushed her in, the look on her face finally sinking in and the realization that came with it: she would never see her mother or father ever again and that was their last goodbye..
"Mom...Dad..." The word's came out in a whisper as tears began to trickle down her face. She didn't want to think about the fact she had left her parents behind, and she certainly didn't want to think about the worse possible outcome of their fates. Even if she knew it was only inevitable.
Her memories were a mess, most people's were, and the Doctor was left reeling from the images she had shown. Because unlike the humans and other species he typically dealt with, this girl was Academy trained. The Doctor didn't have to go looking for anything, the memories found him instead.
Gallifrey, one of his daughters, the High Museum, the Vortex... so many images, so much pain. Somehow, his TARDIS must have rescued.. what was her name?
Alorasephoralane
Another natural birth on Gallifrey. Perhaps they were not so rare after all now?
Finally releasing her, the Doctor willingly wrapped his arms in a hug around the girl now.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
Her parents were stuck in the Time War. Whatever miracle had saved Alora, he could not reproduce it. Not even to save his own child.
Alora was surprised when she felt her grandfather's arms wrap around her for the first time. She had dreamt and prayed for this moment for years, ever since she had first learned about him, and now he was here to console her during one of her hardest times.
She gently wrapped her arms back around him, her head resting on his chest as she closed her eyes and listened to the sound of his hearts beating. The sound was warm and welcoming, ancient and mysterious. But having him here and knowing that he was real and would take care of her, well, that made her feel a little bit better.
Alora lifted her head up from his chest, looked into his brown eyes, and gave a bright smile, "Thank you for catching me. Or maybe I should be thanking your TARDIS." She looked around the inside of the TARDIS and beamed, "Thank you, TARDIS!" the young girl giggled in delight.
Alora wandered around, her hands behind her back as she looked over everything. "I'm fifteen. But I'd like to think I act a little bit older than that. And as these words slipped between her lips, she got down on the ground and laid on her back, looking up at the ceiling.
"Fifteen is a good age, I guess. I'm almost through that major time span of puberty and I don't really freak out about stuff. However, I found the Academy rather dull and boring. Everyone is so old and dusty. This, this is where I would rather be!" She put her arms up, almost sure her grandfather could only see her arms from her elbows to her hands, "I'd rather be out exploring and learning things and actually taking my life into my own hands! This is the kind of thing I've been DREAMING of since I was a child looking out from my bedroom window! And now I'm here and I almost can't believe it. "
His voice squeaked a bit at that. Fifteen was practically a baby! She hardly knew anything about Gallifrey or Time or... well, anything. And even if she had meant her age in the chronological time span of shorter lived creatures like humans, that still put her younger or the same age as Susan when she had started travelling with him.
Gallifrey knew how well that had turned out. His great grandson dead, Susan feeling understandably abandoned... all sorts of unpleasant consequences.
He couldn't make those mistakes again. The Doctor couldn't afford to do so.
Alora's ramble about what she liked and what she thought about the stuffy Time Lords earned a laugh.
"I'm glad the Academy didn't drum that out of you," the Doctor murmured thoughtfully. "Because... you know there's no going back?"
