Sometimes, being a sixteen year old graduate was hard. No one took you seriously because of your age. It didn't matter that Genesis had achieved her A-Levels at fourteen. To the rest of the world, she was an over achieving arrogant show off of a child. It wasn't her fault that she was smarter than most kids her age. And it wasn't her fault that she decided to graduate and actually DO something with her life. But, because of her age, that 'something' with her life was working as a cafe waitress bussing tables. It was insulting, really. But a job was a job and while she wasn't hurting for money, it was nice to have her own personal spending cash to do with as she pleased. Granted, she usually only spent her money on maintaining her violin by buying resin, replacement strings, and bows.
She glanced up at the clock tower. She could see Big Ben from the cafe. Her shift was nearly over. Only twenty minutes to go. She sighed and finished wiping down the tables and brought the dishes to the kitchen. The whole time, her headphones were plugged into her ears, hidden beneath her thick curls. Music always made her feel better. When customers were being snotty and idiotic, she'd drown them out, blaring Bolero into her ears and would just let London dissolve. She heard the clock tower chime over the music and she grinned. She put up her wash rags and clocked out, hurrying out the cafe. She had exactly two minutes to get from the cafe to the bus stop and catch her ride home.
But as lady luck would have it today, the manager had asked to see her in his office for a moment. Normally she would have just blown him off but the look on his face and the tone of his voice made it sound rather pressing. She sighed and unplugged her headset and switched off her MP3 player and walked into his office. At least it wasn't bad news. She'd been working there long enough, he was offering her a promotion and a pay raise. From busser to hostess and a nearly £2.50 raise. She grinned and thanked him. That meant she'd get to wear her nicer clothes to work and didn't have to clean up after people anymore.
She ran with all her strength to the bus stop just in time to see the bus pulling away. She slowly lost momentum and just stood there. She let out a sigh. She lived a good seventeen miles from here. While she'd walked it before, she was tired from being on her feet all day and a nearly twenty mile walk was not that high on her list of 'This I want to do' today. So, she was left with the conundrum. Kill time for the next three hours before the next bus was due to arrive, or start walking. Decisions, decisions.
Earth wasn’t the worst place to be. The humans were susceptible to her charm, and she was able to go undetected even despite the Doctor’s frequent visits to the planet. Unlike the arrogant Master, the Rani wasn’t an idiot. She may have had plans of ruling the world, but unlike his incessant need to show off and preen in the Doctor’s attention, the Rani was more than content to stay in the shadows and pull the strings than reveal herself.
The Rani knew she could go for years – decades, hundreds of years – on Earth without being discovered. She’d done it before, before the Master had given her away to the Doctor. A few disappearances there, a few deaths here, and no one was any wiser. Her experiments didn’t kill most people – rendered their ability to think independently almost to zero, but humans were mostly mindless anyway. It wasn’t like people could tell.
Part of not raising any attention was avoiding stereotypes. The creepy lady that never left her house was one such stereotype. The Rani didn’t enjoy leaving her lab, but it was a necessity if she didn’t want to draw attention to herself. Her ‘lab’ was an apartment, though in the bedroom there was no bed – only vials and tablets that she recorded her notes on. She only needed to sleep a few hours a month, and the couch – she needed a normal living room for the human guests, after all – sufficed for that.
The Time Lady exited a tree, locking the trunk behind her. She put her hands in her coat, walking next to the girl. Normal humans made small talk, but… the girl seemed to be busy enough in her own thoughts, and the Rani wasn’t particularly interested. She sat down on the stop, pulling out a notebook, continuing her notes in a quickly scrawled series of symbols – not quite Gallifreyan, but something more along a mixture of Gallifreyan and Hebrew.
Gen tapped her foot, rather patiently to a waltz rhythm as she just decided to wait for the next bus. She was in no hurry, and it's not like anyone would be home when she got there. Being the only child of an insanely busy single parent left much to be desired in her home life. And she didn't really have any friends. Sure she knew people her age from school, but no one she actually considered a friend, and she didn't have a boyfriend. So no point in trying to find someone to waste those three hours with.
As the woman came to sit at the bus stop, Genesis took a moment to glance at her without trying to look as though she was staring. She she seemed like a much older woman but she had the most intense gaze. The air of confidence almost made Genesis squirm with inadequacy. And then she took note of the piercing in the woman's nose. Genesis could not recall the last time she'd seen a woman her age with a piercing or tattoo. She couldn't fathom why, it was only something aesthetic, but that just immediately put this woman in Genesis' 'Cool as hell' category.
Another thing she couldn't comprehend was.. she felt this strange urge to talk to this woman. Genesis usually kept to herself and was not the sort to pry. She wasn't shy, she just wasn't talkative. But the more she pondered what to say, she realized she was staring rather intently at the woman. She immediately cast her eyes down at her hands and softly asked “You miss the bus, too?” She then grimaced and closed her eyes for asking such a stupid question. Obviously, she'd missed the bus. The young Australian twirled her finger into one of those thick curls as she happened to glance down at the strange writing. The fascination suddenly glimmering in those bright golden eyes.
The Rani slowly raised her eyes, aware of being scrutinized by the teenager. A thin brow arched, but she looked back to the notes and brushed it off. It wasn’t any of her business what some human thought of her, so she wouldn’t concern herself with it. Finally the girl seemed to get over what had struck her dumb and asked her a question. “No,” she said simply. “I came to find a quiet place to work.” End of sentence. Full stop.
The Rani had been prepared to end the conversation there, but as she caught eye of the teenager looking down at work, there was an obvious glint of irritation in her eyes as she closed the notebook, putting it away. “What do you want?”
There came a slight flinch when the woman snapped at her and she shrank back, muttering an apology. The language she chose was not of earth origin, but the girl didn't even seem to notice she'd uttered it in a different language. She went back to her own notebook, looking at the mess she'd scribbled into it earlier. She chewed her lip for a moment before finally closing the book, hazarding to look up at her again. Again, she found herself staring at her.
Genesis normally wasn't the curious type. She didn't ask questions and she didn't pry. And she certainly didn't stare, but this woman had the young Solarii's undivided attention. And that singular fact was bugging Genesis to no end. Normally she didn't care. Not to say that she was without emotions but she'd never been so fascinated with a person before. Her fingers went up into her tightly curled hair and tugged at it sheepishly as she tried to occupy her mind with something else before she quietly added “Bus stop is a rather odd place to try and accomplish getting anything done.”
Apparently the girl didn’t quite grasp the concept that the Rani did not want to be bothered. The Rani narrowed her eyes at her as she continued to talk. “There’s not normally a chatty girl,” she said coldly. She wasn’t known for her bedside manner to anybody, least of all a stranger who kept trying to nose into her business. She tapped her long fingernails against the tablet, raising an eyebrow at the girl. Honestly, was she expected to just comply with the girl’s small talk?
The answer was clear as the girl looked like a wounded animal whenever the Rani would snap at her. She rolled her eyes and straightened her shoulders. “If you missed your bus, why not take a cab to your house? Surely you don’t walk around London without money,” she said.
