Novolazarevskaya City Keemaudland, Antarctica 3222 AD
Sirens howled and droned in the brilliant Antarctic daylight. The citizenry choked the streets, great mobs trying to reach or find shelter. In truth, they should have chosen the closest safe room and huddled there. But people are people, and they tried to get to families or loved ones in times of crisis.
Novolazarevskaya City was, now that Maitri and Halleysport had fallen, the largest city in Keemaudland. There was a lot of congestion.
Abhishek Ulyanov wiped sweat from his forehead and stared down at the chaos in the streets. "Fools," he murmured.
"Don't be so hard on them, Abhishek Deepakevhich," chided his squad leader. Sergeant Ekaterina Akutirahvna Khvostvsky was a ten-year veteran of the wall. She ran her fingers through her close-cropped blonde hair and gestured out into the countryside. "They're frightened, is all."
"You're right, of course," he agreed, turning. "And who can blame them?"
The sight beyond the Wall should have been suburban communities giving way to wide fields of wheat and soybeans and maize. Instead, it seethed and moved like an overturned anthill. Only the 'ants' were human in shape, surging through abandoned homes and against the Wall, seeking access.
Abhishek shuddered, involuntarily. "God," he swore, softly, "will they ever stop?"
"? ?," answered the Sergeant, extracting the clip from her rifle and examining it. "That's why we're here."
He was about to respond, when the sound of weapons fire could be heard from the next watch bunker. Lights began to strobe red, and the Sergeant swore loudly and profanely. "They're on the Wall," she shouted, as booted feet clattered up stairs to the main landing. "God damn you all, FALL IN! They're on the Wall!"
Four hours later...
The side street was deserted. Strewn with garbage from overturned recycling and composting bins, it seemed a shelter from the distant background din. Then a wind kicked up from nowhere, blowing out and away like a localized mini-tornado. A low groaning howl could be heard, rising and falling in time with the apparition that seemed to struggle with visability. After a moment, it settled down and became solid - a tall blue box with a flashing light on the top.
The light winked out and the groaning howl died away.
The door opened.
"Well," the Doctor announced, looking around. "Clearly, I'm going to need to recalibrate the navigational systems. Again. Because this does not look like Pismo Beach."
Pulling the door shut, he shrugged. "Still, no harm having a shufti, is there? Need to wait for Mica to show up anyway, before I pop off to see if Caresh is still around."
Deftly, he avoided the nameless detritus that covered the pavement. Then, at the entrance to the side street, he paused and cocked an ear. "Was that... gunfire?"
There was another faints howling sound this time lower in pitch that started on the side street. It was at first faint then it became a louder while an image started to fad into existence. The howling soon subsided and where it had started there was a cherry red sports car with a dented fendor.
The doors open
"Okay...." says Mica who is in shorts,a tankini top,a leather jacket, her backpack, and boots. "Last I checked Doctor Pismo Beach is not in ANTARCTICA" she says in a slightly miffed tone. She was working on being more in control of her anger and becoming more passive since the death of her boyfriend, but it was going to take a whole lot of work when she was freezing her butt off. "You really need to work on that shuffling before we land in a bad situation." she warns him before perking up at a faint sound. "Was that gunfire?!......ok looks like i warned a bit too late" she replied turning in the direction where the firing was.
The Doctor didn't even break stride as the car materialized behind him. Nor did he really bother to respond as the door opened and shut, or as an irritible voice addressed him.
"Okay...." says Mica who is in shorts,a tankini top,a leather jacket, her backpack, and boots. "Last I checked Doctor Pismo Beach is not in ANTARCTICA" she says in a slightly miffed tone.
"Nope," he agreed, off-handedly. "Florida. Is this really Antartica? Remarkably warm, don't you think?"
"You really need to work on that shuffling before we land in a bad situation."
He laughed. "A bad situation is a boring situation, Mica. I've never yet landed in a bad situation." He turned to face her, arms spread wide and walking backwards. "Besides, this is just a simple matter of checking our spacetime coordinates, and then making a quick tour of the surviving landmark worlds. That'll get the old girl fully calibrated, and I can get back to teaching you how to..."
He cocked an ear. "Was that... gunfire?" they both said at once. Mica added "ok looks like i warned a bit too late" turning in the direction where the firing was.
"Nah, it's good. Mid-sixties in the Antarctic, and gunfire. Wonder when we are?" Following Mica's lead - and he wasn't too ashamed to take good advice - he looked to see where it was coming from.
"Down the road, that way," he decided. "Bursts, sounds like. Small-caliber assault weapons, would be my guess." Cheerfully, he set off down the street towards the sound of the shooting. "C'mon, let's see what's going on."
"Nah, it's good. Mid-sixties in the Antarctic, and gunfire. Wonder when we are?" Following Mica's lead - and he wasn't too ashamed to take good advice - he looked to see where it was coming from.
Mica stared at the Doctor in unamusement of his lack of urgentcy. "To be honest Doctor anything under 70 is cold to me." she said the last part with a smile before looking at the Doctor again. "When I looked at Deans computer it said 3222AD" she replied while staring at the Doctor. "So what do we do now Doctor?" She asks while clutching her backpack just itching to pull out one of the many guns that were within it but decided against it. For now at least.
"Down the road, that way," he decided. "Bursts, sounds like. Small-caliber assault weapons, would be my guess." Cheerfully, he set off down the street towards the sound of the shooting. "C'mon, let's see what's going on."
She looked at the direction he wanted to go and nodded. He was right that was a small caliber assault rifle. "It sounded like a 9A-91 to be exact" she added to his statement. Mica followed him making sure she was five steps behind him. She knew the Doctor was now a passive person despite his prior regenerations pasts and he knew she carried weapons with her. She was working on being more passive like the Doctor but she was still having difficulty due to her temper which she loathed so much. She stopped for a moment when she heard a strange sound this time it wasn't gun shots. "Doctor...please tell me you heard that too" she said looking at the Doctor with concern as she reached behind her back to her backpacks opening. Whatever that sound was it was anything but a pleasant welcome.
"Nah, it's good," the Doctor assured Mica. "Mid-sixties in the Antarctic, and gunfire. Wonder when we are?"
"To be honest Doctor anything under 70 is cold to me." she said the last part with a smile.
Still looking around, trying to place the gunfire, he replied absently. "Personal preference?" he mused aloud, "Or some of your hybrid physiology coming through? Time Lords, after all, are generally able to tolerate a wider temperature range than humans."
She didn't bother to dignify that with a response. "When I looked at Deans computer it said 3222AD"
"Ooooh.... where's the fun in that?" He pointed up the street. "Anyway, it's coming from down the road, that way. Bursts, sounds like. Small-caliber assault weapons, would be my guess." Cheerfully, he set off down the street towards the sound of the shooting. "C'mon, let's see what's going on."
Mica followed. "It sounded like a 9A-91 to be exact" she added to his statement.
The Doctor shrugged. "Sure sounds like the sort of thing an Earth military would name a rifle. Ever since the start of the Industrial Age, they do love their macho-sounding number/letter combinations."
She didn't respond right away. Stopping, he looked back to see her looking around and reaching for one of her own guns. "Doctor...please tell me you heard that too."
"Hmmm?" He cocked an ear. "Oh, the sort of howl, there?" Even as he asked it, he could see figures moving in the alley near Mica. "Yeah, that was... unsettling. And, you may wanna come over here."
The first of the figures stumbled into the light of the street. She was perhaps thirty, half-naked and covered with blood and grime and old bruises and scrapes. Her eyes were glazed, and she blinked repeatedly. Behind her followed a dozen or so more, ranging in age from as young as twelve to as old as forty, equally filthy and equally ragged and equally disoriented.
"Mica?" he called again, urgently. "Seriously. There's something..."
The woman in the lead threw her head back, howling like a thing possessed. Then, snarling and foaming at the mouth, she broke into a run towards the two travelers. After a second's hesitation, the rest of the mob followed.
"...RUN!" the Doctor shouted, catching Mica's hand and pulling her along in his wake as he followed his own advice.

Mica wanted to follow the Doctor's orders for her to come over to him but her feet just would not cooperate with her. Instead she turned in the direction of the howling and grew pale as she saw the moving figures coming down the side they just came from. "My word"was all she could force out of her mouth.

Mica stood completely still. As hard as she tried her feet would just not move. She growled in anger at the betrayal of her limbs "move Mica..come on just move" she told herself while pulling at her legs as if she was stuck in quick sand.
"Mica?" he called again, urgently. "Seriously. There's something..."
Mica snapped at the Doctor "I can see them doctor!" She finally got irritatedthat her feet would not cooperate with her. And then it happened..like always when she's in a fix she lost her temper and grabbed a small handgun out of her backpack and shoots one of the creatures in the arm.
The woman in the lead threw her head back, howling like a thing possessed. Then, snarling and foaming at the mouth, she broke into a run towards the two travelers. After a second's hesitation, the rest of the mob followed.
Mica put her gun down as she heard the howl from the woman and finally realized that was not a smart decision. She turned to look at the Doctor in a panic "run?" She asked in a squeaky voice.
"...RUN!" the Doctor shouted, catching Mica's hand and pulling her along in his wake as he followed his own advice.
Mica was relieved that her feet finally moved and she was pulled away as the Doctor ran. In all of the chaos she dropped her gun when the Doctor pulled her away. She run as fast as she could to keep up with the Doctor and while running she couldn't help but feel like kicking herself for not listening and losing her temper. "I...I'm so sorry doctor...I didn't listen to you* she said while running. Hoping he would forgive her. But that would do her little good if they did not find shelter and fast for the howling mutants where not far behind them.
"Mica?" he called again, urgently. "Seriously. There's something..."
"I can see them doctor!" Mica snapped, drawing a pistol.
"That's not going to improve the situation, Mica!" he snapped back, stepping forward and reaching for her. "YOu need to..."

"...RUN!" the Doctor shouted, catching Mica's hand and pulling her along in his wake as he followed his own advice. There was a clattering sound as Mica's gun dropped to the pavement, and then there was largely the sound of feet pounding pavement and howling, shrieking lunatics behind them.
"I...I'm so sorry doctor...I didn't listen to you* she said while running.
"Running now," the Doctor answered. "Recriminations later! Keep an eye out for shelter. A building with a solid door, or a fire escape we can pull up."
Naturally enough, the buildings were largely shop fronts, with huge plate glass windows. Any fire escapes were out of sight, around the back of the buildings whre they couldn't be conveniently reached by people hoping not to be mutant food. So the Doctor wove in and out of abandoned cars, some parked on the sides of the road and others at odd angles in the street. Several had doors torn open or windows smashed in, and he tried to not look too hard into the vehicles.
"Hang a right!" he called, pointing at an intersection. "We'll... loop around... and circle back.... to the.... TARDISes..."
Sliding into the turn, the Doctor skidded to a halt. Coming towards them, less than two blocks away, was another mob of filthy blood-stained people. At the sight of the Doctor and Mica, they howled and screeched and broke into a run.
"New plan!" the Doctor shouted, spinning on his heel. "That way!"

Mica relaxed a bit at the answer but was still looking for an escape route for the both of them. "This is easier said than done Doctor" she replies while eyeing the buildings.

She weaved through the cars with the Doctor in horror at the sight she saw of the vehicles. She did not want to look in them or even imagine the fate of the people who once were in the cars.. let alone what might be their own if the don't find a safe place soon.
"Hang a right!" he called, pointing at an intersection. "We'll... loop around... and circle back.... to the.... TARDISes..."
"Right!" she replied to the instructions "Dean and the TARDIS... will keep us safe... till they die down...or better yet.... help us get out of here" she added

Mica looked at the people then the Doctor "Need a new plan" she said trying to hide the fear in her voice.
"New plan!" the Doctor shouted, spinning on his heel. "That way!"
With out hesitation Mica ran with the Doctor the other way it was at that time she saw what looked like people in military attire carrying weapons crossing their way "Please tell me their on our side?" she asked the doctor hoping they were not going to have to deal with mutants with weapons

"We can only hope!" the Doctor called back.
"Over here!" one of the soldiers shouted, waving towards them. "Hurry!" As he waved, the rest of the squad opened up with automatic weapons set to short bursts. Their pursuers staggered as the fire hit them, but they showed no other reaction. The soldier who waved them over stopped them about five meters out. "Turn around!" he shouted. "Now!"
Hands in the air, the Doctor did as he was told, eying the approaching horde.
"Are you wounded?" the soldier demanded. "Have you been bitten?"
"What?" was the Doctor's reply. "No!"
"Jackets off!" the soldier ordered.
"You know, the mob is rather..."
"Jackets off!" the soldier repeated.
"And this," the Doctor grimaced as he shucked his coat, "is the military mind in action..."
"Hate when you say that" she muttered as she ran with him towards the soldiers

Mica winced at the sound of firing squad. As many times as she fired weapons like those at an enemy it was not fun being in the middle of it.
The soldier who waved them over stopped them about five meters out.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" she snapped at the soldier
"Turn around" the soldier ordered "Now!"
Hands in the air, the Doctor did as he was told, eying the approaching horde.
Mica rolled her eyes and did the same while holding in the few harsh words she was about to say to the soldier before looking to the Doctor. "what the heck is wrong with these people?" she whispered to him.
"Are you wounded?" the soldier demanded. "Have you been bitten?"
"What?" was the Doctor's reply. "No!"
"Do we look wounded to you genius?!" she replied
"Jackets off!" the soldier ordered.
"I'd rather not plus the Mob is....."
"You know, the mob is rather..."
"Jackets off!" the soldier repeated.
"And this," the Doctor grimaced as he shucked his coat, "is the military mind in action..."
"I know" Mica replied to the Doctor while removing her backpack and jacket "And I always wondered why mom threatened dad when they first met on the Marine base he was stationed on" she added with a chuckle before noticing one soldier staring at her "See something ya like ?!" she asked him in an annoyed tone before adding "Pay attention to the giant mutant mob kid!"
