It’d been a rather long morning at the bakery – it was just before the holidays and everyone wanted cupcakes and other sweets for their loved ones. It was a very sweet notion, Rina thought, but it was a sweet notion that had made her scramble all morning. Thankfully the crowd had mostly cleared out, though Rina still had a few orders to fill. Her employees were all out delivering the items and her husband was at work. Her two children, Tristain and Rowan, were at school for another few hours.
She rubbed the back of her neck as she continued to ring up purchases, keeping a cheerful smile on her face despite the aching that she’d begun to feel. She knew that she wasn’t old by human standards, but having two children – at the same time, no less – was very nearly a death sentence for Dulcian women. She probably would have died that day, had her husband’s mother not been there with her. “Here you go,” she said politely, wrapping the box up nicely and offering it to the customer. “Have a wonderful day!” she chirped.
After they left, Rina was alone in the bakery. She yawned and flopped down in her seat, curling up. The twins were already seven years old, and she was feeling herself slow down. Though, in response to his wife’s inevitable death (and Rina wouldn’t fool herself – she knew it was coming), Léon himself seemed to have sped up. The jingling of the bells signified another customer and Rina jumped out of her seat, already grinning widely. “Welcome to Rina’s Ritz!” she chirped happily.
