Susan was terribly, terribly bored. And lonely, which often accompanied ‘bored’. She couldn’t help it – all of her friends had gone. Marisol had died, Aixa had leapt at the first chance of freedom, and Dr Ryce had disappeared. She didn’t know what happened to Dr Smith, but he hadn’t been very reliable company anyway. His disappearance hadn’t stung the most, as she was used to him being gone. And anyway, she didn’t need those people. She was Susan English! She could certainly entertain herself for a while. She didn’t need anyone else. Not uh, no way, no how.
Except… as she rid the city of its gnome invasion for quite possibly the sixteenth time in two days, she realized that it wasn’t as fun as it used to be. There wasn’t anyone there to smack her on the wrists, or to cheer her on. Or… well, anything. Even the voices in her head had gone unusually silent. Wasn’t it just so convenient that everything had abandoned her? She huffed, sticking her hands in her pockets as she walked down the street. What did she used to do, before she met Dr Smith and Marisol? Her mind came up short – her first memory was seeing Dr Smith. She must have had a life before him…
She crept into the library, looking around curiously. Good. She could probably entertain herself with a book or two, at least for a while. She grabbed a book – something about history, written in dry language by a most likely very dull author. Susan nestled down in a corner on the floor, determined to occupy her brainparts while she could. Otherwise she’d very probably die of boredom.
An hour later, she was asleep with the book on her face.
