Blue nodded when asked if he knew the teenager’s mother. “Yes… she was the sister to my master,” he said cautiously, trying not to make the boy ask very many questions. He didn’t know how well the Phantom got along with her brother or if he was a part of the boy’s life at all. He didn’t want to return Mark to his parents and have them demand why he’d divulged such personal information. “She’s a good woman.”
“What was she like when you met her? So you never met my dad? I say that he would drive you crazy.”
He looked down to hide his smile. Crazier, he thought fondly, crazier would be more appropriate. “She helped me survive one of my most previous owners,” he said, intentionally leaving out that it was her brother. “She was nice. She was traveling with a Frenchman, but he was half-human and not a Time Lord,” Blue said. “I’ve never met your father… and I doubt he’d drive me crazy…”
He finished his lettuce and tomato sandwich and took another sip of his tea. He watched with an amused expression as Mark examined the tea. “Tea is quintessentially British,” he said. “I can order you something else if you don’t like it.”

"Oh cool, my mom is one of those kinds of people.. My dad can be the same way.. But my mom is more than likely to help a person in need I think." He said before taking another bite of his sandwich.
He finished his lettuce and tomato sandwich and took another sip of his tea. He watched with an amused expression as Mark examined the tea. “Tea is quintessentially British,” he said. “I can order you something else if you don’t like it.”
The young lad looked at the tea and took a sip, "No.. I want to see why my dad likes this stuff so I am going to try it." He winced at the heat of the drink, surely his dad does not like the drinks because of the heat? He took another sip, there was a sweet taste but a bitter one took over.
Blue nodded. It seemed to be the way of many species and cultures that the women were more giving and helpful. It didn’t surprise him that the boy’s mother was more giving than his father. “Yes, she gave off a certain impression of kindness,” Blue agreed, watching as the boy took another bite of the sandwich. He took a drink of tea, trying to figure out what he would do with the child if they couldn’t get the vortex manipulator to work.
He had several associates who dealt with alien technology, and he had been on decent terms with Torchwood when they had had a run in with one of his mistresses. If worse came to worse, he could take the boy over to Cardiff and get the team there to have a look at it. But he would prefer to fix it in London – there weren’t as many harmful creatures here.
Mark turned down his offer of getting him another drink. “Here’s a tip for you,” Blue said, smiling a little. “You can put sugar in your tea.” He pushed the tin of sugar towards the boy.

Mark smiled, "My mom has a nack for that." He replied, then finished his sandwich. He picked up the hot beverage and took another sip, it was so bitter, how could humans stand this stuff? The boy wondered as he set the cup back down.
Mark turned down his offer of getting him another drink. “Here’s a tip for you,” Blue said, smiling a little. “You can put sugar in your tea.” He pushed the tin of sugar towards the boy.
Mark looked at the Djinn, sugar in tea? He looked down at the tin that Blue had pushed towards him, tilting his head, "Ok.." He picked the spoon up, putting a couple helpings of sugar into the tea, stirred it up then set the spoon down. He then took another sip of the tea, then put it back down, "Much better." He told Blue, looking to the man.
“Here, Mark. You can take the cup with you,” Blue said, standing from his seat impatiently. He left the ‘tip’ on the table that would have normally covered the price of their meal and then some. He appreciated Lucille’s kindness to let him and his ‘nephew’ eat there for free, but he knew her well enough to know that those were the sorts of niceties that they couldn’t afford.
Still, Lucille had a bit of a psychic streak and a rather alarmingly easy way of reading the Djinn. Blue figured it would be best for him not to bug her too much about paying for the meal before she uncovered the fact that Mark was his nephew. “Come on. We’ll go to my apartment and work on the ‘watch’,” he said, putting his wallet in his pocket and looking towards the kitchen. “Goodbye, Lucille! Peter!” he said, giving a brief wave to her husband as well.
He walked through the café doors, looking behind him briefly to make sure that the boy was still following him. “It’s just a short walk from here,” he said, putting his hands in his pockets as he followed the sidewalk quietly, his mind drifting back to almost eleven years ago, when he’d first been summoned by Mattie. He still lived in the apartment they shared, and Blue had hidden his Lamp frantically, because if he got a new master… he’d have to leave…
It was strange how you lost someone you love. Because, even though Mattie’s death was inevitable, Blue held firmly onto the belief that he could fix the human, if Mattie had only asked. But Mattie didn’t disappear all at once. Slowly, the pieces of Matthieu had disappeared. The hospital bills stopped coming. Genie died first – on the bed, curled up where Mattie usually lied. The pillows lost their scent, but Blue still hugged them to his chest when he slept with him, pretending desperately that if he only wished hard enough the pillow would become Matthieu, and Matthieu would be alive and well. The clothes in the closet and drawers lost their scent as well. The human’s mother and sister stopped calling, no doubt trying to move on with their lives.
And then Princess died, and it felt as though his last piece of Mattie had shattered.
Blue looked up, tearing himself away from his thoughts. “We’re here,” he said, smiling towards the Time Lord. He went inside the apartment, waiting for Mark to enter before shutting and locking it. The last thing he needed was for someone to have smelled out the Time Lord and followed them. He doubted it would have happened, but it was London and the phrase was ‘better safe than sorry’.
“Here, Mark. You can take the cup with you,” Blue said, standing from his seat impatiently.
Mark nodded, "Ok." He said quietly and stood up, picking the cup up. It was now cool enough that the boy can now carry it without the worry of getting burned.
“Come on. We’ll go to my apartment and work on the ‘watch’,” he said, putting his wallet in his pocket and looking towards the kitchen. “Goodbye, Lucille! Peter!” he said, giving a brief wave to her husband as well.
Without question the boy followed the Djinn, he still did not catch on that the man was not a human at al, "Okay." He replied as Mark followed him out of the shop and quietly walked along side Blue, looking at all the shops, up at the sky as a bird or a plane flew by, what a strange place this was. He still did not know why his dad would not bring him here, just what was so bad about it? He thought back to what his dad said.. but the boy would not listen.
"Dad can I go with you to Earth?" Mark asked as he watched his father put the vortex manipulator on his wrist.
"No Mark.. I need you to stay here and look after your mother for me." His dad, Leo replied quickly.
"Why not? You go there so much.. It can't be that bad.." Mark told his dad.
"Because.. it is not safe for you to explore just yet.. when you can tell who is human and what is not.. then yes." With that he pushed the button and Nomad was gone.
Mark shook his head, as he looked up at Blue as he said, “We’re here,” he said, smiling towards the Time Lord.
The Time Lord smiled back at Blue and eagerly followed the Djinn inside, jumping slightly from the sound of the door locking, then forced himself to relax as the young man looked around from where he stood.
The Djinn glanced behind him as the boy jumped from the sound of the door locking. He grinned. “Just a precaution,” Blue said, holding his hands up mildly. “I don’t want anybody to follow us,” he explained. He didn’t want to worry the boy any more than he already had, but he wasn’t going to sugarcoat the truth for him. He looked around the apartment and tried to see it through a newcomer’s eyes; it was fairly small. There were dusty books, most of them in French. He hadn’t touched any of Mattie’s belongings, except perhaps his clothes and their sheets.
“I don’t know if I’ll be able to fix it,” he said, sitting down on the sofa and patting the seat next to him for Mark to sit down. “But I did have a few Time Lords as masters. If I can’t, I know some people who can,” he said. He certainly didn’t want to drag the boy all over Europe, but if that’s what it required, Blue was willing. Even if he hadn’t known the Phantom, he would have gladly accepted the boy’s problem.
It’s what Mattie would have done.
He looked down at his hands, feeling awkward about the whole ordeal. “Let me see it?” he asked, holding out his hand expectantly.
He grinned. “Just a precaution,” Blue said, holding his hands up mildly. “I don’t want anybody to follow us,” he explained.
Mark nodded, "Oh.. yeah that is a brilliant reason.." He replied shyly.
“I don’t know if I’ll be able to fix it,” he said, sitting down on the sofa and patting the seat next to him for Mark to sit down. “But I did have a few Time Lords as masters. If I can’t, I know some people who can,” he said.
Mark walked over to the sofa and sat down next to the Djinn, "Okay.. it is no big deal if you can't.. if you are right.. my mom and dad should get here soon to look for me.. I can wait until then." He told Blue.
He looked down at his hands, feeling awkward about the whole ordeal. “Let me see it?” he asked, holding out his hand expectantly.
The young man nodded, looking to the gadget he worked the straps loose then off and handed it to the man, "Here."
Well, he wasn’t sure how brilliant the idea was, but he accepted the compliment with a brief nod of his head and a smile. Blue knew enough about Earth to know that the inhabitants couldn’t be trusted. Most of them, anyway. There were always exceptions to the rule. Mattie. His smile twitched a little as he walked back to the couch. It was the first time he had invited someone over to the apartment since the man’s death… except for his mother and little sister.
“Okay… it is no big deal if you can’t… if you are right… my mom and dad should get here soon to look for me… I can wait until then,”[/i] Mark told him.
Blue nodded, taking the manipulator from the boy. He peered at it closely. The device sparked in his hands, the golden energy of the Manipulator contrasting with the teal of Blue’s own. He dropped it, rubbing his hands together nervously. Luckily the spark hadn’t thrown them back a few thousand years or knocked them to the other side of the world.
Mark watched as the vortex manipulator spat out sparks and went dead in the Djinn's hand. Some hope died in him, then he simply shrugged as though he was expecting that to happen, "Well.. now what? We could wait around for my parents to come for me.. or go and see if your friends could help." The young man said as he looked to Blue.
He shifted a little bit in his seat and picked it up, he remembered when he was just a little kid, picking up his sister's vortex manipulator and getting it to work when his sister could not.
Frowning some he examined the device, "Well.. if I get the right tools and parts I might be able to fix it.." Then little Silas wondered if he is capable of fixing it, he has never built or fixed a vortex manipulator before. The young man set the device down on the table and leaned back on the couch, almost staring at it, "The problem is that I have never fixed one before.. although when I was four I got my sister's to work when she could not even figure out how to activate it and to get it to take her places.." He looked to Blue, "I don't know if I can fix it."
Blue shrugged. “We could go visit Torchwood,” he said thoughtfully. “It’s almost a three hour drive to Cardiff,” he said, poking the vortex manipulator again. It sparked once more and Blue put his hands in his lap, not wanting to break it further. The boy picked it up again and examined it.
“Well… if I get the right tools and parts I might be able to fix it…”
“I’m not sure where you’d find a store around here that sells that sort of thing,” Blue said pensively, tapping on his chin thoughtfully. “I know a few non-humans who work in garages. They might be able to help. Do you know what you would need for it?” he asked. He listened carefully as Mark explained getting his sister’s to work even when she couldn’t, and then his doubts about being able to fix it. “Well, I have faith in you.”
Well… as much faith as he could have in a boy he’d never met before. “If you think that you can fix it, I’m sure you can,” Blue said firmly, picking it up and tossing it back to Mark. “Come on. I have an idea. Even if we can’t get it to work properly, your parents’ TARDIS should be able to pick up the signal if they’re looking for you. So, all we would need to do is to strengthen the signal.”
He ushered Mark out of the door and ran up the stairs to the roof. “Just tell me what you need, and I can get it.” To prove his point, he twirled his fingers and summoned a teal screwdriver.
“We could go visit Torchwood,” he said thoughtfully. “It’s almost a three hour drive to Cardiff,”
Mark thought for a moment, his dad did not have very good comments on Torchwood, "Well my dad does not like Torchwood.. are they different than what my dad ran into during Medieval London?" He tilted his head as he watched the Djinn poke at the vortex manipulator before it sparked again. His shoulder fell in disbelief, he was going to be in so much trouble when he got back home.
The young Time Lord looked up to the Djinn, "Well if I was able to get my sister's to work without looking at a manual I can fix it up.. but I am not sure what parts are fried or are good to be used some more. I will have to take it completely apart just to find out." He picked the device up and looked at the seems, that still appeared to be very wet, "Maybe the water caused something to short circuit.." He then set it back down on the table.
Mark quickly caught the device, and barely got to his feet when he was ushered out the door. Keeping the manipulator safe in his grasp. He stopped for a moment, as he had no idea where Blue was going to take him to.
Repulsive. The one word that the Collective was able to accept as a definition of the Human race. Most of them were weak, living out their miserable lives slowly. Even so, the Collective did not ignore Earth and it's inhabitants wandering without a purpose They would give them one. A purpose of servitude to a higher power. These thoughts ran through the Information Analysis Center, the command center of the Collective, and in less than a few seconds, transmitted another one, of the hundreds of predatory computer codes sent to capture Human minds. And one of those transmissions found its way into a certain Human's Vortex Manipulator...
