“Mum- I don’t think I can make it to your Halloween party... no- no boy! Mum! When was the last time I had a boyfriend? Exactly. If I ever fancy someone, I’ll call you first.” Pippa said, curled up on one side of the couch. Her annual excusing herself from all Halloween celebrations was particularly exhausting this year. Everyone wanted her to come visit. A coworker had actually invited her to a Zombie prom.... Of all that is good and right in the world...
DING-DONG
With a squeak, Pippa nearly jumped out of her skin. Someone was at the door. Who could it be? She didn’t invite anyone... what if she opened that door it would be the last door she’d ever open? What if it was a con man? What if it- her Mum was demanding her attention.
”Someone’s at the door!” Pippa chirped, ”I’ll call you back!!”
DING-DONG
They were still at the door. Okay. Deep breath. Baseball bat in one hand she looked through the peep-hole. A mailman. Didn’t bombs come in the mail sometimes? She racked her brain, trying to think of what she could have received. She never bought things online. That was just begging someone to steal your identity and run off with all your money.
She just had to tell the man that he had the wrong door. Pippa opened the door- not all the way, hiding the bat behind the door.
”Hello?” Pippa forced a smile.
”Package for...” He turned the box to read the name,
”Wrong address!” Pippa blurted.
”...Pippa Pettywood.” the mailman glanced up at her, eyebrow raised.
”Oh.” Pippa laughed nervously, ”Th-that’s me.”
She signed her name and held the box like it was about to explode. The mailman gave her an awkward glance before walking away. Wrapped around the box via rubber band was her mail. She backed into her flat and set the box carefully on the coffee table. It was almost Halloween. It could be a prank. That was the best scenario she could think of.
In any case. There was mail to look at. She pulled the letters from the tight rubber band and started flipping through them. Bills... bills... and-wait. That wasn’t hers.
It was a bill, but it was addressed to a Taryn Doe. It was from the hospital. That was important. She was going to have to return it.
She hated meeting new people.
Pippa walked over to the door, trying to get it over with before she put much thought into the situation. But what kind of a name was Taryn Doe? It didn’t sound normal...
She walked outside and headed toward the apartment. It wasn’t far from hers.
Wait.... what kind of parents would name their kid Taryn Doe? Now that she thought about it, it could be pronounced as tearing doe. As in, ripping prey into tiny, edible pieces. A cold shiver ran down her spine.
What was she doing? This could be any kind of psycho! This stranger could be dealing drugs this very moment. If she walked into that situation they couldn’t let her just walk away.
It was a hospital bill. She had to return it. Oh goodness gracious.
She bit her lip and placed herself firmly before the door and posed her fist to knock. Pippa squeezed her eyes shut and knocked on the door. Maybe she wouldn’t be home.
Taryn was staring around at her nearly empty apartment with a frustrated sigh. She had been out of the hospital for only a week or so, had finally gotten a job and was able to afford the rent. She shivered, rubbing her shoulders as she made her way to the bathroom to look at her face in the mirror.
She didnt recognize her own face. Was that normal? To be a stranger to yourself? She leaned towards the mirror looking at the horrible bruise on the side of her head. According to the doctor who had seen her in the ER, according the the damage to her skull, she was lucky to be alive.
"Lucky... lucky... How lucky can I be? Dont even know my own last na-"
And Taryn about jumped out of her skin when she heard the knock at the door, her feet slipping out from underneath her feet. She also had no sense of balance, The doctor assumed it was due to her head injury. she pulled herself up, clutching the bathroom counter, thankful she didnt hit her head again as it still hurt.
She made her way to the door, her hand firmly resting on the wall to keep her balance. She looked through the view finder and looked at the woman outside her door and stared for a moment. Who was this? Perhaps a friend she didnt remember checking up on her? No.. She couldnt be that lucky. No one came to see her in the hospital, why would they come now?
"Yes? C.. Can I help you?"
she cautiously opened the door, the anti burglary chain still in place as she peeked at her. She looked at the paper in her hand, it seemed so mundane, so why didnt she know what it was? Could be anything.
The door opened, but not all the way. Pippa blinked her eyes open and restrained a yelp of surprise. A face, with a large bruise peeped through. Pippa jumped despite herself. What happened to her? Was that halloween makeup? The solemn face told her that was a real injury.
”Yes? C... Can I help you?” the lady asked, eyes falling on the letter.
”Oh... um I’m your neighbor, Pippa Pettywood!” Pippa stumbled, ”Th-there was a mix-up in the mail- I got one of yours. It’s- it’s a bill... for Tear- Taryn Doe.”
The fact that she appeared to be a victim was almost more unnerving than her being an enemy. There this lady stood, living proof that bad things happen. In a way it was like looking at herself in the mirror. Hiding behind the door, though the lady didn’t look frighten, she looked... almost depressed. Solemn was a better word. Very serious.
She smiled nervously, offering it to the lady. Suddenly a terrible thought came to mind. What if... what if this lady was in an abusive relationship?
”Welcome to the neighborhood!” Pippa sort of smiled, tossed in a wave, and started walking away. She was two steps away from the door when she envisioned her significant other beating her. Pippa couldn’t just walk away... she took two steps back. ”Uh-huh.... erm, if you don’t mind- are you alright?”
”Oh... um I’m your neighbor, Pippa Pettywood!” Pippa stumbled, ”Th-there was a mix-up in the mail- I got one of yours. It’s- it’s a bill... for Tear- Taryn Doe.”
Oh that's right.. Her name.. Taryn.. Doe? Was doe really her last name? It didnt sound quite like it fit. But if it was on an official paper, then that must have been her name. She fidgeted with her pendant for a moment, looking at the paper, curiously. She reached out, gingerly gripping the rather thickly stuffed envelop. She forced a weak smile and softly thanked Pippa.
”Welcome to the neighborhood!” Pippa sort of smiled, tossed in a wave, and started walking away.
She smiled kindly, before looking back down at the envelop.
She was two steps away from the door when she envisioned her significant other beating her. Pippa couldn’t just walk away... she took two steps back. ”Uh-huh.... erm, if you don’t mind- are you alright?”
Taryn blinked at her for a moment, confused by her questions before realize, she had meant the bruise
"Oh.. This?" motioning to the bruise. "I.. dont really remember what happened. The doctor said I was most likely in a car accident. Took a hit to the head and POW!.. Blank slate. Woke up and all I could remember was my first name. But I'm okay, really. I'm just... starting over again, I suppose"
Her smile was a great deal more cheerful at this. Maybe it was for the best she didnt remember her old life. Something that horrible and no visit at the hospital from family or friends or a concerned neighbor. The something frightening crept into her thoughts. What if she was actually some horrible person and someone had tried to kill her for some evil deed? *Oh pfft* she thought to herself.. *That's daft..*
Taryn looked a little confused, like she didn’t know what Pippa was talking about. She bit her lip, what was she getting herself into?
”Oh.. This?” Pippa nodded as she motioned to the bruise, ”I.. don’t really remember what happened. The doctor said I was most likely in a car accident. Took a hit to the head and POW!”
Pippa flinched at her abrupt exclamation. Taryn continued in an almost casual manner, ”...Blank slate. Woke up and all I could remember was my first name. But I’m okay, really. I’m just... starting over again, I suppose.”
She smiled cheerfully... as though the story she told was as normal and lovely as one about adopting puppies. But that wasn’t what wasn’t exactly what bothered Pippa Pettywood today.... any normal person would assume that Taryn was fine and just walk off. Surely someone would have claimed her. But Pippa had the tendency to imagine the worst case scenario.
That everything was not fine. Taryn was here alone, and Doe was the default name for patients whose name we did not know. Confused with a head trauma and living alone? That was a recipe for disaster. Obviously a good doctor would not send away a patient before they were ready to go home but how many actually good doctors did Pippa know? Usually she went to see her Doctor well and left sick. They didn’t really know what they were doing.
So, despite Taryn’s creepy bruise, Pippa felt that she better make sure that Taryn really was alright.
”So you don’t remember anything?” Pippa asked, eyes wide with sympathy. ”And you’re here all alone? Do you want some company? I could make some tea for you...”
She imagined herself in Taryn’s shoes. Pippa would be too terrified to open the door to anyone, including the mailman. Taryn was so brave.... in an almost creepy way.
Of course... there was always the chance that no one claimed Taryn because Taryn didn’t technically exist. What if she was some sort of rogue spy? Assassins would be in the complex within a week.
Oh dear... Pippa almost wished she didn’t say anything!
”So you don’t remember anything?” Pippa asked, eyes wide with sympathy. ”And you’re here all alone? Do you want some company? I could make some tea for you...”
Taryn looked at her curiously. Was this a normal reaction? She was so unsure. She dint want to look like some kind of alien, but for some reason, the last two weeks trying to socially interact with anyone.. was really hard for some reason, She always seemed to come across as cold and uncaring, and at times, the opposite, Too overzealous and excited.. She was still trying to work out a happy medium.
But how could Taryn resist? She'd been sitting in a nearly empty apartment alone for the last week or so going made. Maybe a spot of tea and someone to talk to would really help put her mind at ease. Then it wouldnt matter if her old friends and family were no-shows. A new friend in a new life. Why not!
"I'd like that. I.. I dont have anything to make tea with tho. We could always go someplace, I still have a little money left over" She didnt want to suggest going to Pippa's place. She wasn't sure if that sounded like she was trying to edge her way in or be rude. She had the potential to make a friend here. She did not plan to let it slip by
Taryn looked at her, obviously hesitant. Pippa hoped that she’d reject her offer and Pippa could call a different neighbor to check up on her.... first she’d have to think of which one and hope she didn’t get invited to another Halloween celebration.
”I'd like that. I.. I dont have anything to make tea with tho. We could always go someplace, I still have a little money left.” Taryn said, she seemed to like the idea but was being polite.
Like a normal human being. But that could be the amnesia. What if she suddenly remembered she was a terrorist and on the run from the authorities?
A public setting would be more prudent. Pippa didn’t want to get caught up in her own flat. But then again... if Taryn really was just a victim... was it a good idea to make her walk all the way to a cafe or pub?
”Well, I always have some tea around the house...” Pippa said, ”But if you’d like some fresh air, I know some good places to go... and don’t worry- I’d buy.”
Pippa forced a smile. Maybe- if Taryn wasn’t a member of her worst nightmare’s club- she would actually be a new friend. Friends were always welcomed. It was better being afraid with others than being alone.

Pippa forced a smile. Maybe- if Taryn wasn’t a member of her worst nightmare’s club- she would actually be a new friend. Friends were always welcomed. It was better being afraid with others than being alone.
Taryn smiled at this. It wasnt that awkward forced smile or a cheesy fake smile. But a simple sweet smile of gratitude. She nodded softly and grabbed her keys to lock her apartment door, leaving the bill on the table beside the door. As they walked along, Taryn tried to make polite conversation but was unable to answer a lot of Pippa's questions.
Every so often, she would l;ook at a stranger passing by half hoping one of them would stop and say "OH My God, Taryn! There you are, I've been so worried. Where were you?", but no one ever did. Thousands of people in this city and no one knew her? The doctors had even been confused that she didnt have any form of identification. All she had on her were some strange robes , a fop watch that didnt open and a very beautiful pendant. The back had a folden inscription but it was nothing but fancy swirls and lines.
She looked down the road at the line of restaurants, pubs, and delis and looked absolutely lost.
Taryn gave Pippa a genuine smile. Pippa couldn’t help but have faith that she was doing the right thing. So when she gave a soft nod and went to lock up her apartment, Pippa knew that as soon as the creepy bruise was gone, and hopefully after her memories returned, maybe she’ll have accomplished some good in her life. She was a self acknowledged coward... it wasn’t like she was helping every creepy granny cross the street. Just the thought of those bony witch hands reaching out to pinch her cheeks made her shiver.
As they walked out into public, Pippa tried to ask Taryn some questions like, ”So what are you going to do next?” or ”Do you remember things like foods you like to eat?”
But Taryn couldn’t answer most of them. It was a little nerve wrecking, something evil might come out. ”Oh! I think I remember this place, it’s where I bury my bodies.”
Jiminy Cricket! Pippa would just walk away. Nevermind she’s assisting someone suffering from a head trauma. She would walk away and move... as far away as she possibly could. Tension seemed to grow with every question until Pippa just found it was simply better that she didn’t ask anymore questions. The silence was deafening.
They had entered a street with a chain of restaurants and pubs. Pippa knew she was going to have to restart their conversing... or her imagination would come up with something frightful. Besides, this was supposed to be an opportunity for her to make friends. Her mother would be so happy if Pippa called back and said she made a new friend. Maybe Taryn would make a good excuse not to attend all these Halloween parties.
”If there is any pub in particular...” Pippa glanced at Taryn, who looked completely lost, ”If not, this pub is a really good place to go during the day.”
Pippa pointed timidly at the pub, giving Taryn half of a smile. She was trying to decide if it was worth the risk to have a Halloween free pass.
”Are you doing anything for Halloween?” Pippa almost couldn’t believe that she had managed to ask, but now that she had started the topic, she was going to have to finish it, ”We could make caramel apples... or make Jack O’ Lanterns...”
Lame as that sounded, Pippa wanted to make certain that she was not offering to watch any scary movie, go to any creepy haunted house, or attend some sick party full of sickos who think it’s fun to dress up as a collection of her worst nightmares. Something safe like bobbing for apples was her idea of a celebration... if she absolutely had to celebrate that dreadful holiday. Literally dread full.[/ul]
Taryn felt bad for making things so awkward for Pippa. Here she was, a concerned neighbor, and Taryn couldnt answer hardly any of her questions. As they continued down the street, only a few blocks from the apartment, Taryn began to wornder aloud, mainly to herself, but still where Pippa could hear. "Maybe I'm not from around here.. That could be why nothing looks familiar. I might have been traveling and.. something happened along the way."
What was sad was, Taryn was right. She wasn't from around here, Not even close. She had been traveling when something horrible happened and she lost her memories.. and.. Something else.. Something important tickling at the back of her mind, no.. Not something.. Someone.. But the slowly emerging memory fizzled away just as quickly as it appeared when Pippa pointed out a particular pub. Sje surveyed it for a moment and her eyes wandered to a bright neon sign that flashed invitingly in bright pink and blue, "Ice Cream". Taryn hated to admit it, but wile at the hospital, she had developed quite the sweet tooth for their fruit cocktails and their ice cream.
Of course, the first time she had hurd a nurce tell her what it was, she was completely disgusted and threw the cup of ice cream at her and called her a knuckle dragging neanderthalic barbarian. She had thought the nurse had called it.. "Eyes Cream" She blushed now, thinking about the misunderstanding and looked over to Pippa and pointed at the ice cream parlor. "How about over there? Think they have cookies too?"
As they made their way over, Pippa posed the question of Halloween and Taryn's head tilted to the side with a puzzled look as if she had just asked a complex math question. "Wha... What's 'Hollow Ween?".. Her interest piqued when Pippa mentioned the sweet Caramel apples, and suddenly, Taryn was all for the idea. She smiled jovially. She had only just met Pippa and already, Taryn felt better that she had in the last two weeks of what she could remember of her life.
"The Apples sound like a great idea!... But... what's a Jack Lantern?"
”Well your accent sounds about right.” Pippa tried to be comforting, ”Maybe you just need more time, London is a huge city. People can get lost with all their memories intact.”
They were quiet for a moment, Pippa really didn’t know what to say.
"How about over there? Think they have cookies too?" Taryn pointed to an ice cream parlor, Pippa glanced at it. What a wonderful choice! Pippa did enjoy going to pubs on occasion, but she could never fully enjoy herself. The awkward tension of wondering how many psychopaths waiting to drug their latest victim was usually a put off. But this lovely young lady did something her friends would never have suggested, going to get ice cream instead.
”Yeah!” she said, maybe a little too enthusiastically, ”That particular parlor has a bunch of holiday specials. I’m sure they’re still selling those sugar cookies with decorative frosting.”
"Wha... What's 'Hollow Ween?" Taryn asked, looking totally confused. Pippa just stared at her.
Was this child an angel sent from heaven?!
She literally had no idea what Halloween was.
Pippa had found a new best friend.
"The Apples sound like a great idea!... But... what's a Jack Lantern?" Taryn took the bait.
Pippa had officially booked Halloween solid. No person was going to scare her this year! Just don’t let her know Halloween is supposed to be scary.
”Oh, that’s something people do for decoration. You get a pumpkin, carve a face or a picture on it. Then when it’s dark, you light a candle and put it inside.” Just so long as they didn’t carve anything scary, something cute or friendly.. was this going to be the best Halloween ever.
They walked into the ice cream parlor, it was cold in the room. Almost colder than it was outside.
There was a lot of ice cream, and just as Pippa had predicted, they had halloween specials. They were selling sugar cookies decorated with cartoony witches, but they were favoring the new ice cream flavors with Halloween titles.
Hopefully none of them would inform Taryn the purpose of the holiday. [/ul]

She grinned widely as the selection of goodies. She ordered a chocolate ice cream and had them mix in sprinkles and mini marshmallows and little chocolate chips. 'Sweet tooth' was an understatement. Taryn had also noticed the decorated sugar cookies and little squares of holiday cheese cake served up like brownies. She eagerly piled them on to her plate and smiled back at Pippa. She seemed like a child with how happy she seemed. A Kid in a Candy store, so to speak.
"Carving Pumpkins could be fun. I could make a constellation. That would be pretty!!" Taryn sat at a small table with an additional seat and waited for Pippa to get her items and join her at the table.
As they enjoyed their sweet treats, more talk of different things they could carve and other possible sweets they could try to concoct. Maybe even a movie. "There was one I liked to watch in the hospital. Ever heard of 'Singing In The Rain'? That one was adorable."
Before they left, the Ice Cream parlor, Taryn claimed a napkin and made a quick map from the apartment to the parlor. It was actually a pretty good map. She seemed to even remember street names even thought it hadn't seemed she was looking at any of them. "There.. Now if I'm ever in the mood for some ice cream, I'll remember how to get here!"
She peered out the window and noticed it was starting to get a bit dark out. Taryn shivered as the cold of her ice cream had an effect on her body temperature. As they walked down the road back to the apartment, Taryn noticed a few people running around in dark robes. It was a few people celebrating Halloween a few days early. But to Taryn, she was slightly disturbed by the strange sight.
One man jumped right in front of them, playfully trying to startle them, but Taryn tightly clutched Pippa's arm, almost protectively and balled a fist and punched the man dead in the center of his face, right through the grotesque rubber mask. The man reeled back and then ripped off the mask and stared at the two of them dumbfounded, his nose bleeding and obviously broken. "Bloody 'ell, woman! Calm yer tits! Et was jus' a joke!". Taryn failed to see the humor and took a step towards him as if threatening to hit him again. "Serves you right! Attacking two ladies in the dark! That's totally barbaric!"
The man ran off, not wanting to see what the brunette was going to break next. Taryn looked to Pippa "You alright?"
the clerk asked, looking up at her from his glasses.
”Y-yeah.” Pippa said, she remembered the breathing in part- but was forgetting the breathing out part. Which elevated her voice an octave, or two.
”Mmm Hmm.” he sighed, turning away.
It was too cold for ice cream and she was afraid of consuming too much sugar. If she ate a lot of sugary things, she might get a cavity. If she got a cavity, she would have to visit her dentist. Who was on her top twenty-five list of people to avoid.
Pippa saw Taryn seated gleefully at a small table and naturally joined her.
"Carving Pumpkins could be fun. I could make a constellation. That would be pretty!!" Taryn said, looking so happy.
”That could be tricky- but we should try.” Pippa said, glad that she was thinking of non-halloween-y things to carve. Pippa herself was trying to think of something to carve, but was only thinking of bad ideas. A smily face would look creepy, no matter how innocent she designed it. A kitten would remind her of those ally cats.... well, any figure with a face would scare her when the time came to turn the lights off. Maybe Taryn had a really good idea with the constellation. It would be like looking at the stars.
Conversation with Taryn was surprisingly easy. The lady was so chipper and so friendly that Pippa was beginning to ignore the fact that her true identity was a mystery.
"There was one I liked to watch in the hospital. Ever heard of 'Singing In The Rain'? That one was adorable." Taryn said happily.
”That one is a classic.” Pippa nodded. ”The Wizard of Oz is a personal favorite.
Well... could you say that was the truth if she hasn’t seen the whole movie? Pippa thought briefly about her movie collection. How many of them has she skipped the villainous scenes, or left the ending unwatched entirely? Maybe movies weren’t the best topic for Pippa to discuss.
Taryn suddenly grabbed a napkin and began drawing. Pippa had no idea what she was doing, and before she could guess Taryn set the pen down and announced, “There... Now if I’m ever in the mood for some ice cream, I’ll remember how to get here!”
Taryn looked out the window and Pippa followed her gaze. Jiminy Cricket!! How did Pippa not keep track of time? She was like a human sundial, always aware of the current state of light outside. But there her sanctuary was, melting away into a world of darkness and evil.
Pippa shivered, and it wasn’t because the building was cold.
”We should get back before it gets... even darker.” Pippa said firmly. She wasn’t going to take no for an answer. If Taryn wanted to hang out some more, she could walk herself home.
Fortunately, Taryn was coming along, and Pippa wouldn’t have to. They were a bit quiet, Pippa wasn’t thinking about what was on Taryn’s mind. Just full on coaxing herself to take each step, go round every corner, all in hope that she would not fizzle out and be left curled in a ball waiting to die.
Then. Someone, something.... it came out of nowhere. Pippa shrieked and stepped back. Heart pounding faster than a locomotive. Taryn’s grabbed Pippa’s arm, scaring her almost as badly as the thing popping out in front of them. Just as quickly as she was in Taryn’s grasp, Taryn threw a punch at the monster that stood before them.
It pulled its face- no, wait. The guy pulled a horrific mask off, face red with anger... and blood.
"Bloody 'ell, woman! Calm yer tits! Et was jus' a joke!" he yelled, Pippa was still trying to catch her breath.
The image of a bleeding angry man beating them up and stealing their money began to play in her mind.
"Serves you right! Attacking two ladies in the dark! That's totally barbaric!" Taryn said, bracing to hit him again.
Pippa’s eyes shot over to Taryn, mouth hanging open. What was that she just said? Barbaric?! Taryn was the only sane person Pippa knew.
And she hit scary people.
Pippa inched closer to Taryn.
The man stormed off with his friends, Pippa wrapped her arms around Taryn’s arm.
"You alright?" Taryn looked at her, Pippa nodded feverously.
If Taryn didn’t have this potentially evil background, Pippa would be glued to her side for forever.
”Do you want to hang out at my place?” Pippa asked, starting back home again, moving quickly. ”I make a really good Broccoli Cheese soup.”
Pippa knew that Taryn had something wrong, as in twisted, about her past. Otherwise Taryn would be too good to be true. But maybe, Taryn would never remember who she was. Maybe, maybe, Pippa wasn’t alone in the world anymore. [/ul]

Taryn nodded in agreement, speaking quietly as she looked out the window as well “Agreed. I dont much like the dark either.” What little tidbits of sugary goodness she hadn't eaten was nearly folded into a napkin and stuffed into a coat pocket. For the first time in the last two weeks, she was not wracking her brain trying to remember who she was. This young Asian girl with the Irish accent made her not care about any of that. Maybe her past didn’t matter. She was a clean slate now after all.
Then. Someone, something.... it came out of nowhere. Pippa shrieked and stepped back. Heart pounding faster than a locomotive. Taryn couldn’t help but notice Pippa was trembling as she clung to her. Something flicked in Taryn's mind, a memory that was covered in a haze. She didnt know why, but Taryn put her arms around Pippa like a mother would a trembling child. “Hey. It's okay. He's gone. Hell, I doubt he'll try that again any time soon” she smirked down at Pippa, releasing her from the gentle hug. She softly looked down at Pippa. She was only a few inches taller, but she still had to look down, maily because Pippa was cowering and clinging to her. “Let's head back.. It's starting to get chilly” She shoot her hand as if trying to shake off the pain. The fist she had struck the man with had a nice fat welt on her knuckles.
”Do you want to hang out at my place?” Pippa asked, starting back home again, moving quickly.”I make a really good Broccoli Cheese soup.” Pippa knew that Taryn had something wrong, as in twisted, about her past. Otherwise Taryn would be too good to be true. But maybe, Taryn would never remember who she was. Maybe, maybe, Pippa wasn’t alone in the world anymore.
Taryn nodded and smiled happily. “That sounds great!” The remainder of the walk was blissfully uneventful. Casual conversation ensued, questions about her family, if she lived alone, if she worked, She wasn trying to hard not to sound like she was prying, but she was very curious about Pippa.. Maybe answers about someone elses life would trigger a memory about her own life. As the got to the apartment, Taryn paused, She found herself looking rather intently at a soda vending machine with an 'Out Of Order' sign taped to the front. She's seen it a few days after she'd moved to the apartment and she didnt know why but she was drawn to the stupid machine. She shook her head and continued following Pippa back to her apartment.
Taryn's smile was unbelievably contagious, though Pippa's was still meek.
They walked back together, side by side. The silence of their walk left Pippa to her thoughts. Halloween, despite its horrible habit of terrifying her, managed to creep into her nostalgia. When she was little, her brother and kid sister always competed on not only who had the scariest costume but who could scare her the most. One year, she found herself locked into her bedroom, telling everyone she had a massive school project to work on... which actually only needed five minutes of her time. She still hadn’t managed to escape Halloween, even then.
But maybe this year, things could go well. She had a friend who didn’t know what Halloween was and seemed to dislike gurriers almost as much she did. That was a rare trait.
”So tell me about your family!” Taryn’s voice cut through the silence like a freshly sharpened knife.
”Well,” Pippa wasn’t sure what she wanted to say about her family, ”My family is from Ireland, if you couldn’t tell. It’s just my parents, my half sister, my kid brother and kid sister. We moved here when I was a teenager. It was hard at first, but home is where your family is... Well, at least it is for me. I can’t stand being too far away from them.”
Taryn proceeded to ask her other questions. Questions about who she lived with and where she worked. Pippa couldn’t help but feel paranoid that Taryn was some secret agent who was collecting data for her file. She did try her best to think positive and managed to answer her questions politely. She lived alone, and she was a temp.
When they finally got to Pippa’s apartment, she instinctively ran through her routine. Checking the area for suspicious people before unlocking her door, then slowly and carefully going inside. Phone was ready to call for the police in one hand, and as soon as she was inside, her hand slipped around a baseball bat. Normally she would shut the door behind herself, but she thought Taryn was right behind her. Very carefully she went from room to room, switching on all the lights and checking under all pieces of furniture. It didn’t take her too long, as she had done it so many times it was very routine. When Pippa headed back to the kitchen, was shocked to see the door hanging open. To her horror she watched a shadow coming through. Baseball bat hung limply from her trembling arm. She dropped her phone and couldn’t seem to take a simple breath in and out.
Before she could will a scream, she saw that it was Taryn. Not a monster. Not a murderer. Just Taryn. She didn’t know why she was coming in just now, but Pippa almost didn’t care at all. She had never been so relieved in her life.
”Right...” Pippa tried her best to hide her fear. It wasn’t so much that she was embarrassed, but it was a habit built from people entertaining themselves by scaring her, ”Welcome to me flat. Living room is right here, and jack’s down the hall, first left. Make yourself comfortable.”
Pippa smiled and tried to casually lean on her bat but being born clumsier than a baby elephant, she found herself crashing to the ground. [/ul]
