A bit arrogant? Javier grinned a little. Seemed a bit of an understatement, but he didn’t mind most of the Americans he’d met. The Americans he’d met were under circumstances with sick animals they’d been warned not to bring abroad or even just tourists on the streets. “What about you?” she asked. He shrugged.
“Spain,” he replied, smiling at her widely. “Barcelona.”
He could tell she knew that he knew that what she was saying was totally made up. Javier shrugged. “Except we both know it’s a bit too much of a coincidence, isn’t it? Even for me, and I’m a firm believer in coincidences.” Something cut her off before she had a chance to finish what she was saying, and with a whip of her head, glared at something in the distance. He tilted his head. “Uh… you okay?”
“Look there’s the road you might want to head out since it’s starting to get dark.”[/b]
“Sure,” Javier said, frowning as Manola sniffed the woman again. “Guess I’ll see you around then.”[/size]
Fiona smiled a little when he said Spain “I’ve never been, but I’ve it was nice.”
Reaching down Fiona scratched Manola behind the ears, softly “Easy friend I can handle it.” “Guess I’ll see you around then.” Fiona smiled and nodded “Yeah, I’ll see you around.” they reached the tree line and Fiona stopped not crossing the line “This is as far as I go you should meet the main road if you go down this road then take a left.”
As the woman pointed out the direction that he needed to go, Javier nodded and peered at the tree line. “Thank you,” he told Fiona politely. He watched as she remained on the line stubbornly. He looked at her curiously, but stepped out into the clearing. Manola leaned closer to her, staring up at her with wide brown eyes. “Come on, Manola. We’re going home,” he said, smiling down at her with a slight raise in his eyebrow. He tugged on her again, and she stepped closer to her master.
Javier put a hand inside of his pocket and pulled out a small card. “Here, Fiona. You said the wolf comes around a lot. I’m a vet, so if you ever need me to stop by and look at her you can call me. My address is on the back, too.” He handed it over to Fiona and raised his hand in a friendly salute. “I’ll see you around, eh?”
Fiona looked down at Manola when she leaned closer she could tell that the wise old dog knew what she was, the older ones could usually tell easily and didn’t mind much it was the younger ones that generally feared her.
Looking up as Javier turned around handed her his card “Yeah, I’ll give you a shout if anything comes up.” she shoved the card in her back pocket and half saluted as well “See you around Dr. Javier.”
Week later
Fiona could barely stay focused as she rifled through a drawer where she’d stashed the business card, finally she found it, she started to the phone but tripped over her own feet and face planted on the floor causing her to pant a little in pain when she hit the floor and causing her leg to bleed more, reaching up to the table Fiona jerked the phone off the table and started dialing Javiers number, “Please be there.” for some reason and she didn’t know why she felt if this event did end in him finding out what she was, maybe he’d be one of the few who didn’t freak out.
Javier García Reyes shut the door to his apartment, putting the groceries down on the floor as he unhooked Manola’s leash, allowing her to run over to her food dish expectantly. He picked up the bags again, shuffling into his small little kitchen as he put the contents of the bag in his pantry and refrigerator. He took a measuring cup, picked out some of Manola’s food, and put it in her bowl. “Here you go,” he said cheerfully, scratching her behind her ears as she hurried over to eat.
He had just gotten off a rather long shift of work. Javier plopped down on the couch, hanging his feet off the edge as he drummed his fingers against his collarbone. “Manola, I’m bored!” he whined, flopping around irritably. He pulled out his phone contemplatively, wondering if he should call Katelyn. Hadn’t she mentioned doing records, though? He certainly didn’t want to interrupt that process. He knew how important that was to her. He nearly put away when the phone rang. Javier didn’t recognize the number, but he answered anyway.
Ragged breathing on the other end put him on alert. “Hello? Are you okay?” he asked, standing and putting on his coat just in case he had to hurry somewhere.
Fiona didn’t know if she should be happy that he answered the phone or not “Hello? Are you okay?” Fiona tried to keep her voice as level as possible as she held the phone between her shoulder and her cheek, and pushed herself up so she could stand “Yes, is this Javier Garcia Reyes by any chance?” Fiona caught herself on the side of another table trying not to fall over her own feet again.
Javier leaned against his door, listening as the woman on the other end of the phone rustled around. “Yes, is this Javier García Reyes by any chance?” the woman asked. He could heard another rustle, like someone catching themself on something.
“Yes,” Javier answered, kneeling down to put the leash inside the drawer. The voice sounded familiar, now that he thought about it. He pressed his lips together, trying to place the voice. “Is this Fiona?” he asked, standing back up and going through his door. The woman didn’t sound entirely okay. He wondered if he should tell her that he was a veterinarian and not a doctor.
‘Easy Fi don’t start flipping out and tearing stuff to threads.’ she dug her nails into the table trying to stay focused on the here and now instead of the thought of running to hide and ‘lick her wounds.’ Heh man how she hated that term.
“Is this Fiona?” Fiona nodded then remembered ‘he can’t see you doofus. Answer the question.’ She shook her head “Yes, yes it is, good memory. Look I hate to call like this but when we met you said to call you if the wolf got into any trouble. Would you still be interested?”
“It’s my job to remember people,” he laughed, leaning against the outside of his door. The wind ruffled against his hair as he walked down his apartment steps, listening carefully as she described the reason why she was calling. “No, don’t worry about calling me. You’re fine. And yeah, of course I’m still interested. Is she hurt?” he asked, quickening his pace a little. The only time he had ever even needed to get close to a wolf was when he’d been working with the zoo and their female wolf was pregnant.
He glanced at his watch – it wasn’t too late, but there certainly wouldn’t be many cabs at this time of the night. Especially when he lived in a quiet part of the city. “Is she sick or wounded? Either way, you’ll need to keep her calm. Give her just a little water. I’ll be there in a few minutes, okay? I’ll try to stay on the phone,” he said, unsure whether his phone would have enough reception.
“Is she hurt?” Fiona looked down at her leg tying a shirt around it trying to slow down the bleeding some “Yeah, you could say that.”
“Is she sick or wounded? Either way, you’ll need to keep her calm. Give her just a little water. I’ll be there in a few minutes, okay? I’ll try to stay on the phone.” “I..she got caught in something.” Fiona shook her head trying to clear it stuff was starting to get a little on the blurry side “I can’t…stay Javier she’ll be here when you get here. Don’t worry, she’s not dangerous remember that she will not hurt you.” as much as she wanted to stay on the phone with him she knew she couldn’t, she was still trying to keep the fact that she was the wolf a secret from him so if she stayed on the phone any longer with him she wouldn’t be able to change. “She’ll…be waiting.”
Fiona made sure to give him the address before she hung up the phone before he could argue, he said water right? She couldn’t completely remember so she went over to a faucet and filled a bowl full and set it on the ground. Then she started to change, she wouldn’t have to worry about changing without meaning to, she’d gotten pretty good about controlling when she changed.
Limping a little she shook herself after she did, laying down slowly she looked around at the floor and realized that there where odd human foot prints all around in the blood, but at the moment Fiona was too tired to care.
Javier frowned. He’d noticed the slip-up, but he tried to write it off. The woman was clearly concerned over the wolf, although really it had sounded more like pain than worry. He bit his lip nervously. He had a bad feeling about this. He didn’t have enough time to stop by the clinic and get anesthetic. Despite her claims that the wolf wasn’t dangerous, he knew that any animal got defensive when it was wounded. Whether it was a small little housecat or a wolf, any animal came out claws first when they were hurt. It was nature, and humans weren’t different.
He put his phone in his pocket. He was near the edge of the woods, and he squinted through the darkness. He wished Fiona would have stayed on the phone. She was worried about the wolf, so why hadn’t she been willing to stay there with the animal? He tapped his pockets, making sure that the essential first-aid items were still there. After a run-in with some glass on the ground on a walk with Manola, Javier had been sure to carry essentials around with him. A small roll of a bandage, tweezers, a needle, thread, and a small bottle of disinfectant and hydrogen peroxide.
Javier opened the door to the house cautiously, walking into the kitchen. He was immediately met with the thick stench of blood. His nose twitched. There were both human and wolf tracks, and Javier wouldn’t have thought much about it, when he realized that they didn’t overlap. The human’s stopped exactly where the wolf’s began.
“Hey there,” he said quietly, grabbing paper towels off the counter. He knelt next to the wolf, putting some of the hydrogen peroxide on the napkin. “This is going to hurt a little, but…” He took a deep breath, and pressed it to the wolf’s gash in the leg. Oh, man. He winced, expecting for a large paw to slice him across the face or for her to bite his arm off. “I think you’re going to need stitches…”
Fiona looked up when Javier came in before laying her head back down on her front paws, she didn’t move as he approached, mostly because she figured he’d get freaked because she was a wounded animal.
She watched him behind light brown eyes as he moved over to the counter and got the paper towels “This is going to hurt a little, but…” Fiona winced a little and tried to move her leg away when Javier put the hydrogen peroxide on her leg but other than that she tried not to make any sudden moves.
“I think you’re going to need stitches…”[/color Fiona let out a huff of breath as if to indicate she wasn’t too happy with that idea. Moving close to Javier Fiona took his forearm in his mouth not biting him but squeezing the tiniest bit as if to say ‘Ok, I trust you.’
He nearly winced when the wolf huffed at him, but Javier gathered his nerves and fished in his pockets for the peroxide, the needle and thread. He froze when the wolf engulfed his arm in her mouth. Javier stared at her, and he was struck suddenly by how human she was. He was a firm believer that animals were every bit as sentient as humans were, but he’d never connected with an animal on this sort of level. He let out a small sigh as she squeezed his arm with her teeth and let go. He ran a hand through her fur and nodded.
“I think I got that,” he said gently, taking her leg and cleaning the blood off a bit more. He disinfected the needle and threaded it. “I’ll be as quick as I can,” he continued, sticking it inside her flesh. He winced as blood drew from her leg, but he continued sewing the wound, knotting it at the end. He put the needle back in his pocket after wiping it down and put more hydrogen peroxide on her leg, wiping it off again. “Good girl. You’re being a good girl,” he said awkwardly, pulling out the bandages and applying one to her leg.
He took a deep breath and ran his hands across her again, looking for other wounds or broken bones. “Anything else hurt?” he asked the wolf, looking down at her with a concerned frown.
Fiona closed her eyes a little as Javier disinfected the needle and started to sew her leg up “Ow, ow, ow.” she tried not to move so he didn’t mess up.
“Good girl. You’re being a good girl,” Fiona looked over at Javier and raised her eyebrow, or at least she tried she was sure it looked strange whatever she managed to pull off. She huffed once again and rolled her eyes a little but then did the best smile she could manage in her wolf form.
“Anything else hurt?” she slowly stood up making sure to keep the weight off her leg and shook her body a little as far as she could tell that was it.
Well, this wolf did not seem particularly impressed by his attempts to soothe her nerves. He smiled a little sheepishly as she stared up at him. Javier had already put together that this wasn’t a normal wolf, but he was still taken aback as she rolled her eyes at him. “All right, fine. I won’t call you a good girl anymore. Agreed?” he asked, feeling a trifle silly for talking to a wolf.
He was just happy that she wasn’t trying to bite his neck off.
Javier pulled his legs underneath himself as he watched the wolf lift herself. She was much more intelligent than the average wolf – this much was obvious. She stood still for a moment, then shook her body as a ‘no’. “Good. Okay, I don’t suppose you have a little… uh… wolf-y bed? You’ll probably want to sleep on the couch… or I could take the pillows off and make a little bed for you.”
He was unsure how to handle this now. Fiona hadn’t given him any other information besides the address and that a wolf was hurt. He had no idea when she would be back, and he couldn’t leave the wolf in good conscious.
