The animal inside her was itching to come to the surface all day, making Fionas day a very distracted one. The legends of werewolves got it wrong, oh so wrong they weren't mindless killing machines when they turned, well most weren't. Fionas species weren't, they were blessed, they were Loup Garou.
She stopped her motorbike outside the property line her parents had left her when they’d died, even though their death had been quick they’d made sure years ahead of time if anything had ever happened to them Fiona would be ok, swinging her leg over the bike she looked up and down the road then rolled it into the woods.
It was a back road, that’s why Fiona liked it because on days like this when her body screamed at her to change and to run she could just park her bike in the woods and no one would bother it, or her for that matter. When she was satisfied that no one could see it from the road she walked out to the road to check again and make sure no one was coming, softly to herself “Easy Fiona, you can feel the forest beneath your feet soon enough.”
Once she was sure no one was coming she headed back into the woods. Looking behind her one final time to check Fiona nodded and took off in a full run to get deeper into the woods. Her senses started to heighten and the change took effect, first her arm joints started to pop in directions that weren’t normal for a human causing her to whimper slightly and to stop as the rest of her body changed.
About five minutes later instead of a human standing where Fiona had stood a snow white wolf with a pile of clothes next to her.

Most of the time Manola was a good dog. She didn’t use the bathroom in the house, she didn’t bark at strangers, and she even let kids pounce all over her without much thought. Manola Reyes even knew a few tricks that he had taught her idly. She was healthy and even though she was beginning to get on in her age, she still had pep in her step. Dr. Javier García Reyes considered himself lucky to have such an amazing dog. Most of the time.
Right now? Not so much.
Javier had gotten bored with his normal walking routes. So, he had promptly put Manola on her leash and began walking around. He may have ignored a few ‘turn back’ or ‘don’t go in here seriously’ signs, but it wasn’t like they were breaking the law or anything. And besides, he had a few doggy bags just in case Manola had to do her ‘business’. He’d bent over just for a moment because his shoes were untied.
Manola must have sensed his uneasiness of the new place and the woods. And, like the true fiercely loyal dog she was, she began running through the woods, her tongue sticking out as her leash flew behind her.
Javi stared after her, his mouth open slightly from shock. “MANOLA!” he yelled, running after her as fast his little Spanish legs could manage. He continued yelling at her in rapid fire Spanish. He stopped once he heard growling.
His poor dumb dog was glaring at a wolf – a wolf, Javi noted, that wasn’t even supposed to be there – and growling. Muttering prayers to the Virgin Mary, he slowly knelt down without breaking eye contact with the wolf and grabbed Manola’s leash tightly, bringing her closer to him. His eyes flicked to a pile of clothes. Oh, great. It had begun its murdering spree already.
The veterinarian stared at the wolf in alarm, backing up slowly. “Good wolf,” he said, remembering to keep his voice firm.
Fiona steadied her stance at the dog and guy in front of her, she had no intention of hurting them, but they weren’t supposed to be there. No one was. He was Spanish by the smell of him, “Good wolf,” Fiona started to take a step forward when she heard a shot in the distance ‘Hunters, damn.’ well wasn’t it just all go at the Faolchu woods today.
Moving forward Fiona nudged her head on the guy trying to get him to go, then turned around and started burying her clothes; she’d come back in the morning and get them. Once she was satisfied that they were buried properly she turned back to the guy and barked at him trying to scare him off ‘Please, go!’ hunters had been known to trespass in the woods and the ones who did had a tendency to shoot first and ask questions later.
It took every inch of willpower in his body not to flinch when the wolf began to walk towards him. Manola's fur raised as she glared at the wolf. Javier tugged her back, keeping her tightly at his side. He filtered through the various things he had learned in his many many years of university. This one was a female, and she was very out of place. They hunted in packs, and yet she was alone. She didn't appear to wounded which ruled out the possibility of having been stranded because she was weak.
A shot echoed through the woods. Javier's eyes narrowed. Wolves were also illegal to hunt in every country in the European Union, with the exception of Estonia. Well, they definitely were not in Estonia. The veterinarian shook his head and then jumped, startled, when the wolf began to nudge him. Manola backed off when she realized the wolf wasn't going to rip Javier's throat out.
Then she turned and buried the clothes, leaving Javier utterly confused and dumbfounded. Well. This just wasn't going to do at all. "Don't you worry," he told the wolf, stomping off towards the direction of the shots with all the law on his side and his overbearing confidence in his favor. Manola walked with him, head craned back to give the wolf another stare. He pulled his wallet out as he approached the hunters.
"I regret to inform you that you are violating Council Directive 92/43/EEC Articles 12 and 16, Annexes II, IV, and V," the doctor said, showing the men his ID briefly, covering the 'veterinarian' word. It looked official enough, he reckoned, to give them a bit of a scare. "I'll need your registrations," he said, looking pointedly at their guns. Manola bared her teeth at the man. "Unless of course you simply got turned around and your guns misfired," he said, looking around for any animal casualties.
Fiona turned her head to the side as Javier and his dog stomped off towards the direction the hunters were in without blinking an eye. ‘This guy is crazy.’
One of the hunters who seemed a little hammered stumbled holding his gun half hazardly, slurring his words slightly “What are you talking about, we haven’t shot no wolves.” Fiona slowly and trying to stay out of sight walked closer, whining a little at the thought of them hunting there.
"I regret to inform you that you are violating Council Directive 92/43/EEC Articles 12 and 16, Annexes II, IV, and V," “I don’t give no two craps about what your badge says little man.” Fiona growled a little and went over digging up her clothes, dragging them out. If she could them on quickly she could run them off she hopped.
Pulling her shirt on Fiona slowly walked up to the group leaving her shoes where they were, the dirt felt good under her feet “You shouldn’t be here, these woods are mine and there’s no hunting allowed here.”
Javier quirked an eyebrow. “Weird,” he said thoughtfully, stepping a little closer to the men and raising his chin defiantly. “I don’t recall mentioning wolves. Do you, Manola?” he asked. The dog snarled at the men, pulling at the leash threateningly. He slackened it slightly, allowing her to push forwards closer to them. “So how, exactly, did you know what I was talking about?”
I don’t give no two craps about what your badge says little man.
The Spaniard winced at the man’s atrocious English. He wasn’t a native speaker and he knew better than to use double negatives! He opened his mouth to give him a piece of his mind, but a girl interrupted him. You shouldn’t be here, these woods are mine and there’s no hunting allowed here.
He looked her over, his brown furrowing when he realized they were the same clothes that the wolf had been digging. Manola stared at the woman, looking very puzzled indeed. Javier shook his head slightly and pulled out his phone. “Now, do I need to phone the authorities are you going to leave willingly?” he asked, glancing over at the woman apologetically. He was, after all, technically a trespasser too.
Fiona watch Javier pulled out his phone and address the guys, when he looked at her Fiona could tell he was apologetic for the trespassing causing her to tilt her head to the side a little as if to say it was ok she knew he didn’t mean anything by it.
Returning her attention to the men with the guns, now they were going to be a problem “There weren’t no signs posted.” Fiona visually flinched “You’re right, there weren’t any signs posted.” the hunter caught her mocking tone “You making fun of me little girl.” yes oh how badly she wanted to say that but didn’t. Fiona could smell the blood on these men and it was driving the animal inside of her nuts, holding her hands up a little to try to keep the situation from going out of hand “No, no I apologize. But as I said there’s no hunting in these woods and as my friend here has stated if you don’t leave the authorities will have to be notified.”
Oh good. It seemed that the woman didn’t seem to want to call the authorities on him. He would have to explain to her that he was merely taking his dog for a walk and really he hadn’t been going to hunt. Hell, he hadn’t expected for wolves to be in the forest anyway. How had these men known about them? But she seemed to be used to hunters – or perhaps just these men in general.
Javier smiled a little as the woman subtly corrected the man’s grammar. Still, despite the warnings that she was giving him, the men didn’t seem to be budging. And they had guns. And they were drunk. Dangerous, yes. He stepped closer subtly to the one of the men with guns and, raising his leg quickly, slammed his foot into the man’s stomach, grabbing the gun clumsily. He silently thanked his mother for forcing him to attend those dreadful fútbol lessons.
Now that his bravery had subsided – along with the vast majority of his adrenaline – he looked at the gun in his hands and then at the other hunter. The other one was probably still too winded to move – he’d been a midfielder; kicking with force had been his job. “Uh…right! So you better get out of here before I really try to take justice into my own hands!” he declared, waving the gun around in an effort to appear like a lunatic. Most people ran away from crazy guys with guns, right?
…Even if said crazy guys had no idea how to use a gun.
Fiona didn’t move when Javier slammed his foot into one of the guys and taking the gun, she could smell the fear coming off of the guy but Fiona kept her eyes glued on the dude in front of her. “Leave, now.” looking from Javier to Fiona, the guy raised his gun “To hell with…” Fiona didn’t let him finish his sentence.
Grabbing the barrel of the gun Fiona moved it quickly to one side as the hunter got a shot off, going deaf for a minute she pulled the gun back a little and slammed the butt of the gun into the guys face knocking him backwards onto his back. “Now I’ll say this one more time.” she let her eyes flash a golden brown then back to green “Leave, or a broken nose will be the least of your worries.”
His eyes widened slightly as the other man began to raise his gun. Javier dropped the gun in his hands out of instinct. The woman seemed to have everything under control as she jerked the gun away from him. Javier covered his ears and Manola barked and snarled at the man, biting at his ankles as the woman slammed the gun in his face.
Javier pulled Manola backwards. “Now I’ll say this one more time. Leave, or a broken nose will be the least of your worries.” He looked at her – her eyes seemed to flash, changing from green to brown, and then back to the green. His eyebrows knitted together in confusion, but worrying about strange tricks of was the least of his problems.
The man that Javier kicked got up and picked his buddy up. He muttered a few curses at both of them and threatened her. He reached for their guns, but Javier kicked the ground. The man seemed to catch the Spaniard’s point and the two men ran off without their guns.
“Thanks,” Javier said, leaning down to pet Manola and calm her down. She was getting on in her age – she didn’t need to exert this much energy anymore. “Sorry about trespassing. I was taking her for a walk and then my shoes were untied so I had to let go of her, and then she ran. And there was a wolf!”
Manola was still sniffing the girl, appearing very puzzled by how the wolf and the woman smelled exactly alike. Javier paid no heed and straightened, holding out his hand for the woman to shake. “Dr. Javier García Reyes.”
Fiona watched as the guys took off running after Javier kicked the ground and sighed, she didn’t want to fight these hunters because in the big scheme of things they were innocent just…well she guessed stupid would be the best choice of words.
“Sorry about trespassing. I was taking her for a walk and then my shoes were untied so I had to let go of her, and then she ran. And there was a wolf!” [colo=red] “Yeah there’s one who frequents these woods. She doesn’t mean any harm though.”[/color] Fiona turned around to face him and his animal companion, kneeling down a little Fiona very slowly reached out and scratched one of Manolas ears, softly “Good girl.”
“Dr. Javier García Reyes.” Standing back up Fiona wiped her hand on her pants leg out of habit, before reaching out and shaking his hand “Fiona Faolchu, nice to meet you Dr. Reyes even under the circumstances. And don’t worry about the trespassing, it was an innocent mistake.” she thought about it for a second. “Umm, would you like me to show you the way to the road?”
Faolchu? That was a unique name. Gaelic? His surnames were very common, even when he visited other countries that weren’t Spain. Of course, not everyone could pronounce his name the way it was meant to be, but Javier didn’t mind when non-Castilian people pronounced it without the ceceo. “Faolchu…” he repeated. “That’s an interesting surname. I’ve never heard it before. Where are you from?” he asked. Manola sat next to his feet, looking much calmer than she had earlier.
“Umm, would you like me to show you the way to the road?”
“Yeah, sure,” he said. “I’ve just got a question. Earlier when I saw the wolf, she was burying your clothes. The same outfit,” Javier observed, glancing around for the way to the road. “Just seems a little strange, doesn’t it?”
“That’s an interesting surname. I’ve never heard it before. Where are you from?” Fiona started to walk but slowed so she’d be beside Javier and Manola “Originally? Boston, well sort of my parents where on holiday and in the states when I decided it was time to be born.” Fiona stopped herself before she told this stranger her whole life story.
“Just seems a little strange, doesn’t it?” Fiona looked at Javier for a minute studying him “Must have been some other clothes that just looked like mine.” she knew that sounded crazy and seriously doubted Javier would buy it but it was the quickest excuse she could come up with.
Boston? Javier raised a brow contemplatively. That was in America, he knew that much. He'd never been to the 'fifty nifty United States', but he'd had a bit of a childish obsession with it for a while. The girl didn't have the strange American accent he'd adored as a child. He followed her as she began to walk, listening to her explain she'd been born on a holiday trip to the United States. "That's very interesting," he said. "I've never been to the States."
She didn't seem to take his suggestion very well at all. He kept quiet as she tried to explain that it was just a coincidence that the wolf had been burying an outfit that was exactly hers. Not even Fiona herself seemed to believe it very convincingly, and Javier gave her a look that told her quite plainly he didn't believe a word of it. "Right," he agreed, a small smile curved on his lips. "Probably just an identical outfit the wolf just happened to get in your woods," he nodded and continued following the woman out of the woods.
"That's very interesting," he said. "I've never been to the States." Fiona shrugged a little as they walked “I dunno I find them a bit,” she thought about it for a second to try to find the right word “Arrogant, I guess would be as good a word as any to say but for the most part the people are good people.” some at least, but she kept that to herself. “What about you?” she already knew he was Spanish but figured it’d probably be better to keep playing the simple human.
Oh she knew that look, it was the look of ‘don’t bullshit me.’ "Right," he agreed, a small smile curved on his lips. "Probably just an identical outfit the wolf just happened to get in your woods," Fiona didn’t even try to hide the grin slowly growing on her face, this guy seemed nice enough, but hell he wouldn’t believe her if she just told him she’d have to show him though he’d probably freak out if she did, so Fiona just shrugged “Yeah prob…” a twig snapped nearby causing Fiona to snap her head in that direction, just like an animal.
Taking a deep breath to calm herself she started again “Yeah, probably. Look there’s the road you might want to head out since it’s starting to get dark.”
