He arched a brow curiously as she leaned in to dot a warm kiss to his cheek. If he didnt have to self composure that he so prided himself in, those cheeks would have flushed a soft pink. But he managed to smirk, none the less.
"That is a lovely name. River.. it has a nice ring to it, really" But when she mentioned that he'd actually already named her, it was as if a light had switched on in his head. "Oh... OH! River!! River, River!! You cheeky time hopping Minx!!" The sudden revelation and memory of time travel hit him like a splash of cold water. He then remembered his TARDIS and he took River by the sides of her face and planted a jovial kiss on her lips "You brilliant woman!! Oh, I like you!!"
Just when she thought this Doctor was only going to give her a confident poker face to work with, it appeared that a memory had been triggered.
Most effusively too. River was hardly immune to surprise, and this Doctor had certainly managed it with his about face mood swing and the sudden jubilant kiss.
Not that River was going to outright say that, even if her body language and expression screamed it.
"I should rather hope you do."
Not that you had to like your wife, but it certainly made living with your spouse (even as infrequently as they saw one another) much more enjoyable.
Just on the outskirts of camp, a scream could be heard. No time like the present to jump straight in to what being the Doctor meant!
"I do believe we've been requested," River addressed him wryly. She quickly grabbed her Vortex Manipulator from her jewelry box (she had hidden it away due to its unfortunate conspicuousness what with her costume) then turned back to the Doctor.
"Ready or not, sweetie."
River held out her hand to the Doctor, a show of support, even as she pushed back the curtains of her tent to see the view outside.
As he kissed her lips and remarked how he liked her, platonic, of course, he couldn't help but smile at her with that wide eyed child like enthusiasm. "I should rather hope you do." He mused over her words for a moment. Although some memories were flooding back like a refreshing tidal wave, This mysterious woman still eluded him. He would certainly prod her for the details at a more convenient time as the sudden scream and uproar broke his train of thought. “That certainly doesn't sound like it's part of the festivities” He replied rather calmly.
"I do believe we've been requested," River addressed him wryly. “You know.. I think your right.” he replied with a smile, plucking his sonic screwdriver from his vest pocket. He hated to admit it, but when his memories were in their proper place and not all muddled about in his head, he rather enjoyed this sort of thing.
"Ready or not, sweetie." River held out her hand to him. The Doctor smiled and took it, gladly dotting a kiss to the top of her hand. He scolded himself silently, however. He hardly knew this woman. Charming as she was, there was still a certain amount of distrust towards her. Oh he liked her, certainly, but that didn’t mean he trusted her.. not yet, in any case.
He peered through the curtain at her side to see what had caused such an abrupt halt to the festive goings on. He just hoped it wasn't Daleks. He didn’t think he could tolerate another run in with them at the moment. But The Doctor let out a soft and long sigh. Whatever it was, he knew that we was almost certainly prepared for anything.. wasn't he? “Why dont we have a look around? What say you?” He smiled and after a moment, found himself casually stepping outside the tent, humming. He'd forgotten the composer of the melody quite some time ago, but the tune was firmly planted in his brain.
River grinned at the Doctor, feeling a strange sense of pride. Even at his lowest points, the man was still ready to rise to the occasion, to face off a dragon without any more armor or weapons than his wits and occasionally a sonic.
After yet another kiss, on the hand this time, River led him out of her little tent and into the open. Thus far, it was hard to tell anything in the milieu. Which was encouraging in a way, if a group of people had suddenly dropped dead, the crowd would have most likely run not milled about in confusion.
“I’d call it one of your better plans,” River remarked, seizing the chance to tease him, even in the midst of yet another catastrophe.
YOU WILL BRING FORTH THE DOC-TOR OR YOU WILL BE EX-TER-MIN-ATE-D a harsh voice ground out, and River winced.
The Doctor simply canted his head slightly in an almost gracious bow, almost beaming from the compliment. And let it be known that, No where in time or space or dimension was there ever a Doctor who did not simply adore compliments and praise. The smile on his face said as much.
However, The Doctor certainly didn't get much of an opportunity to thank her and voice as much. The shrill metallic screams of a monstrosity that haunted him in both his nightmares and in his every waking moment cut through the commotion like gunshot breaks through silence.
YOU WILL BRING FORTH THE DOC-TOR OR YOU WILL BE EX-TER-MIN-ATE-D
The Doctor groaned softly. Would he never be rid of them? It always seemed that no matter how many times he destroyed them, nomatter how many fleets he brought down, somewhere in the dark recesses of the universe, they swarmed and bred like cockroaches.
"Ah, Just when I was finally beginning to think I'd seen the last of them. I suppose I should know better by now." He glanced almost apologetically to River. He, of course, was oblivious to her experience in dealing with Daleks. "River, I feel I may owe you an apology."
"You're right,' River grinned a little to the Doctor. "You did forget my birthday last year, but don't worry. I must say, you most definitely made it up to me."
Alright, so who said she had to be serious? Daleks might be nasty, but they weren't anything she had not faced before.
"Just follow my lead," River whispered, stepping out first with her hands in the air.
"Alright, you've got me. What is it you want dalek?"
He arched a brow curiously as River casually strode up to the single Dalek as it was screeching about turning him in. “Forgive me for being old fashioned but isn't customary for the gentleman to lead the dance, my dear?” he inquired, a faint hint of humor in his tone, which he was trying to disguise with a hint of concern from her seemingly rash bout of bravery.
"Alright, you've got me. What is it you want Dalek?"
“YOU WILL GIVE US THE DOC-TOR! HE IS AN ENEMY OF THE DALEKS AND MUST BE EX-TER-MIN-ATED!”
“Yes yes, I'm sure we've all become quite familiar with your little speech. Honestly, You Daleks.. Your persistence is quite flattering. I almost feel obligated to blush.” he responded drily as he stepped up alongside River. His hands also held out in a show of surrender, his fingers splayed in a light flourish as he wriggled them to show that he was unarmed. The Dalek leveled it's laser emitter as it's eye stalk fixed on The Doctor.
“YOU WILL COME WITH US! NOW, DOC-TOR!!”
The Doctor smirked a little. If he could count on nothing else with the Daleks, it was that they failed to realize that he always had the upper hand. These Daleks were just so one track minded. “Oh yes, absolutely! Unfortunately I have a rather complexly tight schedule. Do you mind if I pencil you in for sometime next Thursday? I do believe I owe the lovely lady a dance” he chirped brightly as he grasped River's hand and pulled her in close and grinned that playful school boy grin that he was infamous for, no matter what regeneration you were dealing with.
“DOC-TOR! YOU WILL CEASE THIS FUTILE ATTEMPT TO DELAY US!!”
“Pasodoble, my dear. Do try and keep up.” he whispered sternly as his lips ghosted her ear before taking her hand and spinning her out, keeping a firm hold on her wrist with on hand, his back straight and his feet firmly together as his other arm shot up in an elegant flourish. Once he was certain River had her footing, he leg go of her hand to spin his back to her and shrugged out of his frock coat and spin it in a wide circle like a matador taunting a bull.
The bull, in this instance was the bewildered Dalek. Before the Dalek could screech it's complaint for his illogical actions, The Doctor shouted “Olé!” as he suddenly ran at the Dalek, using his frock coat to cover the eye stalk and twisted the fabric around and wrenched with all the strength he could muster to snap the stalk off and let it clatter to the cobblestone ground. He used his foot to kick out and disengage it's blaster, rendering the Dalek blind and harmless.
“Well! That's one way to get the hearts pumping! Shall we continue our little dance and see where the rest of them are?”
The more she got to know this particular incarnation of her sweetie, the more River really liked him. He was poised and dignified in a way River had not expected to be such a turn on. But anyone who greeted the Daleks with such a cavalier smile was impressive to River's mind. Not the same as being allowed to shoot it the way she wanted to... but probably the Dalek's defense mechanisms were in fine form anyway.
A pity. Shooting things was so simple and fun, and then she would have had all the time in the world to enjoy the Doctor and her gypsy outfit.
Her grin only got wider when the Doctor murmured the type of dance before leading her just as he had suggested. Seeing him break off the Dalek's eye stalk only assured her fascination all the more.
“Well! That's one way to get the hearts pumping! Shall we continue our little dance and see where the rest of them are?”
"Sweetie, I think I would follow you anywhere," River responded with an amused smile. Besides, she certainly didn't want to stop dancing.
Twirling back towards the Doctor lithely, she smiled crookedly up to him. "As you say, traditionally, you lead, Monsieur Matador. What a future you must have available to you in Dalek taming."
"Sweetie, I think I would follow you anywhere, As you say, traditionally, you lead, Monsieur Matador. What a future you must have available to you in Dalek taming."
The Doctor arched a brow playfully at her. “Señor... Señor Matador” he corrected her with a gentle smirk as he held his arm about her waist for a moment. “While I have always been partial to Alliteration, I find that the rhyming technique is just as enticing” There was a moment where their eyes locked and The Doctor could see a great deal of mystery in her eyes. Nothing too dastardly or deceptive, of course, but she was clearly not telling him something. It left the question buzzing in his head.. Could he really trust her?
That was something he would undoubtedly discover for himself later. She knew him.. Quite well, there was no denying that. And her familiarity troubled him. She reminded him of someone that he needed to find. Someone important and he was suddenly hit with a pang of guilt and nostalgia. “River, We had best be on our guard. Something tells me this is more than what meets the eye.” He rather innocently leaned in to ghost his lips against her ear as he whispered urgently. “I fear I may have forgotten someone and.. This feels more like an attempt to delay rather than to take me captive”
With that, he grasped her hand and began a fast paced jog towards the sounds of where he was certain he heard more Daleks.
Laughing at his correction, River decided that considering he had just outdanced a Dalek, she would let him have his way. Besides, there was no need to be too pushy. He was probably on edge with her enough as it was.
River, We had best be on our guard. Something tells me this is more than what meets the eye.”
"Isn't it always?" River asked coyly, a small shiver tingling through her spine when he leaned in closer. It would be so tempting to lean in, but he wasn't her sweetie yet. Not really. He was the Doctor, just not quite finished, and it seemed he might have forgotten his current companion.
Interlacing their fingers with a casual confidence, River followed his lead directly into danger, quietly hoping that this Doctor might have more of a plan than hers tended to normally.
The Doctor calmly loosened his cravat and offered his most dashing smile to River. He couldn't put his finger on it, but this was no simple attempt at an invasion or even merely for his capture. They were delaying him from something. That Dalek went down far too easily. Not even an attempt to fire off a shot. Now, more than ever, The Doctor needed his wits about him. This River would certainly prove to be an asset.
She knew him better than he knew himself at the moment. As those very thoughts rolled through his skull, there came a momentary pause in his step as he looked quizzically at River. The look in his pale blue eyes told her that he was desperately trying to riddle it out. “Come then.. Let's see what this is really about.” He smirked to her as he picked up his pace once more, and found himself humming a tune that made him feel rather nostalgic as he hurried along. “Ah.. Their drop pod. Let's go inside and see if anyone's home, Yes?”
Oh, Doctor, Doctor. He couldn't let a puzzle go if he wanted to, that beautiful, ridiculous man of hers. Well, not hers quite yet. As long as he could keep his head in the game and not agonizing over their (potential, from his perspective) future relationship, River had every confidence that they would succeed today.
“Come then.. Let's see what this is really about.”
"Here I thought you'd never ask," River teased, matching his pace cheerfully.
When they came to a halt outside the drop pod, River withdrew her side arm, not quite willing to go in to enemy territory unarmed.
"It's not like we're asking for a cup of sugar, now is it?" she asked a little defensively when he looked her way again. Immediately diverting a potentially unpleasant conversation, River continued, "You said you thought you had lost someone. Could your companion be here?"
"You said you thought you had lost someone. Could your companion be here?"
He seemed to seemed to be mulling the words over in his head for a moment. His companion. That was the word he was looking for, and suddenly it was as as clear as crystal what it mean. A traveling companion, someone to be kept under his watchful care has he revealed to them to wonders of the cosmos. At was as this revelation hit him that the gnawing guilt tore at his hearts.
This companion he had misplaced, this poor soul who's name he could not recall not face call to recollection. This companion who he was meant to be looking after was lost. And it could have only been his fault. He was the time lord after all. That companion was his responsibility. He looked up at the drop pod, prancing impatiently in place as he pondered what to do.
Perhaps these Daleks had the answers he was seeking. Oh but surel;y he couldn't just knock on the door and expected to be welcomed inside like a dearly missed friend. It was then he realized, while musing and mulling these thoughts over... he had not answered River. “For their sake I hope not. Daleks do not make the most desirable of hosts”
With the sonic between his fingers, he turned it thrice over his fingers before opening the door and making his way inside and turned back to resume the grasp upon River's hand. "Best stay close."
"I think you underestimate yourself and your companions, sweetie. Your friends are made of sterner stuff than most," River replied steadily as she took his hand once more. She couldn't imagine there ever being a time where she wanted to turn this man away. Chuckling, she added, "I'll stay as close to you as you like."
Purring a little, River smirked as they eased inside the door together.
"I have it on good authority that the Daleks once offered tea. And as I just witnessed, they are apparently capable of dancing, with a bit of a nudge in the right direction."
