Danny wandered the streets with an air of ease, grinning a bit up at the sky. He looked down at the kitten he'd found on his doorstep, and that smile faded. The kitten was still breathing, but it looked helpless and sad. Danny realized he needed to get to the vets, and fast, so he quickened his pace.
As soon as Danny got to the vets, he sat down and waited, becoming more and more worried by the minute. He cuddled the kitten close to him, being an animal lover, he didn't want it to die. The minutes passed. They were only minutes, but Danny thought they were honestly hours.
Eventually, someone came out and he leaped up, his eyes wide, holding the kitten. "Please, sir, can you help this kitten? I don't know what happened to her, I found her on my doorstep. Please, would you help?" he begged. He'd already checked the kitten's gender, hence knowing it was a female.
Danny' eyes were full of worry as he awaited an answer. Something dawned on him. This may not even be a vet. It could be a random stranger. But of course, he didn't react just yet. I mean, he must be one. He looks like one, anyway, Danny, thought.
Dr. Javier García Reyes had just finished performing a standard checkup on a parrot. The owners were regulars at the clinic. They had several dogs, a cat, a few horses, and two birds. Javier often joked with them that they nearly had enough pets to run an animal shelter from their home. The clinic often sent him to do home checks, to offer advice and care for the elderly dogs. Another clinic cared for the horses; those animals were much out of Javier’s league. He walked out of the back, throwing away the gloves he’d been using to handle the parrot.
There was only one man in the waiting room. Javier walked to the room, pulling on a fresh pair of gloves. Javier jumped slightly when the man leapt to his feet. “Please, sir, can you help this kitten? I don’t know what happened to her, I found her on my doorstep. Please, would you help?” he begged. Javier’s eyebrows knitted together, a little confused by the man’s begs and pleas.
He took the kitten gingerly from the man’s grasp. “Of course,” he said, walking to the back, motioning for the man to follow him. He placed the cat on the table and looked up at the man, giving him a wide grin. “Dr. Javier García Reyes,” he said, feeling the cat’s small body gingerly. “But you can call me Javi. You said you found the cat on your doorstep?” he asked. His fingers slid gently over the cat’s tail. The kitten hissed and clawed him.
He pulled his hand back and looked at one of the technicians. “Broken tail, and a possibly fractured fibula on her left leg,” he told her. “3 mL of Acepromazine,” he said, petting the cat behind her ears. The technician returned with the bottle and a syringe, and Javier carefully gave the cat a shot of the medicine.
It took only a few moments for the cat to begin to fall asleep. The technician scooped the cat up. “I’ll be taking the x-rays. I’ll be done in ten minutes or so,” she explained, walking from the room quickly.
Javier held a clipboard to the man. “The first visit is complimentary. If you plan on adopting the kitten, we’ll pay for her first check-up, including getting her caught up on her shots and spaying her,” Javier said, getting the bandages ready. If the fracture was too bad, they would have to perform surgery and insert metal rods to correct the bone structure. “If you don’t adopt her, we’ll find her a good home.”
Danny felt relief when the guy made it obvious he was a doctor, and he also felt slight worry when the kitten was taken off of him, but he followed the vet guy none the less.
"I'm Danny. Nice to meet you, Javi." he said, nodding. "And yes, I found the poor kitten on my doorstep. I couldn't just leave her there." he gave the kitten a gentle stroke, smiling down at it and wincing slightly when the kitten hissed, although he'd already moved his hand away.
Danny nodded at the technician and watched her leave before turning to Javier, and he thought for about two seconds, before he nodded firmly. "I'll definitely adopt her. And thanks, about the paying and all." he said, nodding. "She's cute, and I like kittens. A lot." he said, smiling. "She's going to be okay, right?" he asked. "I mean, will her tail get better?" he added, just in case.
“I’ll definitely adopt her. And thanks, about the paying and all,” Danny said. Javier nodded and searched his pockets for a pen, handing it to the man along with the clipboard with the insurance information and client sheet. “She’s cute,” the man continued, and Javier nodded again, grinning. “And I like kittens. A lot.”
Javier looked after the technician. “Yeah, I understand. I decided I wanted to be a vet after my cat died,” he said, sitting down on one of the stools in the room. He patted the one next to him and smiled at Danny. He didn’t tell Danny that it was only after the nuns had insisted that God had totally meant to kill his cat for a ‘reason’. Javier figured the reason was to be a vet, so after a lot of begging, he finally got his parents to go with it, and that bid him an ecstatic farewell to Catholic school.
“She’s going to be okay, right?”
“She should be,” Javier said, smiling at Danny. “Most of the time a broken tail only makes a cat uncomfortable. Occasionally, it can cause more serious issues. If the nerves have been over-stretched or torn, sometimes they could cause mobility issues, diarrhea, they could lose feeling in their tail…”
“I mean, will her tail get better?”
Javier drew in a breath and let it out slowly. “I have to wait for the x-rays to tell you for sure,” he said carefully. “But the only thing I noticed was that her tail was hurting her. She was moving it… that’s a good sign, Danny. It means she’s almost guaranteed to make a full recovery. The worst case scenario is that we’d have to amputate her tail and she’d need to wear special diapers.”
He held up his hands mildly. “But I can guarantee you that she isn’t one of those.”
The technician came back, putting the cat down on the table. Javier stood and took the x-rays from the technician. He pointed at a kink in the cat’s tail, a few inches away from the head of tail. “Luckily, the break is far enough away from her spine that it shouldn’t cause her any trouble. Her leg just needs a cast and I’ll need to bandage up her tail.”
“I had Alice give her the shots,” she said.
Javier smiled at her and put a light pink collar around the kitten. He wrapped her foot up and set her tail. “I’d like to wait at least a month before getting her spayed. I don’t want to give her any trauma. If you give her a name, we can make a tag for her,” Javier offered.
“I’m going to see if Alice needs any more help. She’s got the Jenkins’ dog,” the tech said, rolling her eyes. Javier nodded and turned back to Danny, handing him the cat.
“I’d say she’s around five or six months.”
Danny sat on the stool beside Javier and nodded. "Ah. Sorry about that." he said. "But you enjoy being a vet, then?" he asked curiously. Just trying to make conversation, of course. To get Danny's mind off of the poor hurt kitten. Not completely, but, just enough to make him stop worrying about her.
Special diapers, Danny couldn't help but smile. "At least it won't be something like that." he said. "It would be a bit weird, even if it was going to help her." he explained his smile slightly.
Danny sighed in relief and took the kitten, stroking her tummy gently, making her purr. She seemed to be snuggling into him. Danny looked down at the kitten and thought hard. "I'll call her...Sara." he decided. Sara had been an old childhood friend of his, once. Plus, he liked that name and he thought that it suited the kitten.
"Really?" Danny looked down at the kitten curiously. "Wow. I never really noticed that she was around that sort of age. Not until you just said it, anyway." he said. The kitten was still purring, nuzzling into Danny's shirt.
Javier chuckled. “Of course I enjoy being a vet,” he said, looking down at the little wounds that the kitten had given him. He wasn’t particularly worried about them – he’d gotten a lot worse, and he’d already disinfected his hand. “I love feeling like I’m making a difference. It always makes my day seeing the friendship between human and animals, you know?” he said, looking over at Danny. “What about you? What do you do?” Javi asked.
“I’ll call her… Sara,” Danny said after the technician brought her back. Javier nodded and wrote down the name on the report. It was a nice name… he’d named his dog after a children’s rhyme he’d heard while on vacation in Mexico. Hola, hola, Manola raton sin cola. His dog, a fluffy white Maltese, probably didn’t enjoy being named after a rat without a tail, but Javier figured what she didn’t know wouldn’t hurt her.
He continued examining Sara, and told Danny roughly her age. “Yeah. You can tell by a cat’s teeth and bones,” he explained, watching as Sara nuzzled him. He smiled and rubbed her behind the ears. “How about a follow-up appointment in… two weeks? Are Thursdays good for you?” he asked, smiling. “I’ll need to check on her tail and leg to make sure they’re healing properly.”
He fished out a card from one of his pockets and handed it to Danny. “Or if there’s an emergency or if you have any questions, feel free to call me.”
Danny laughed a bit. "My job is nowhere near as good as yours! I'm just a barman, because, you know, I'm waiting for the perfect chance to come along for me." he admitted. He liked it at the bar, but...well, he could do a lot better.
Sara purred approvingly when Javi rubbed behind her ear. Danny smiled at her fondly then looked up at the vet, taking the card and slipping it into his pocket. "Thanks, Javi. I will do." he said.
Then Danny thought of something. "Oh, is there anything else I need to know before I go?" he asked. He was just double checking, after all. Sometimes people forgot.
"Oh, and feel free to pop down to my bar any time. Drinks would be on me." he said, and he paused. "It's the pub a few minutes down from here, the Willowtree. It's pretty easy to find." he offered. Of course, he didn't expect Javi to go, but it was polite to offer after his help, right?
“Oh, is there anything else I need to know before I go?” Danny asked. Javier looked at the cat as the young man picked her up. He shook his head slowly. He ran through the list again in his head. He’d already gone through the basics, hadn’t he? He’d told him that they needed to get her spayed in a few months, that he should bring her back for later examinations. That covered the basics. Anything else would have just been lingering on… and despite Javier believed himself to be excellent company, he recognized that most people didn’t like to hang around a veterinary clinic.
“No,” Javier said.
Danny looked like he was about to leave, but then remembered something. Javier raised his eyebrows. “Oh, and feel free to pop down to my bar any time. Drinks would be on me. It’s the pub a few minutes down from here, the Willowtree. It’s pretty easy to find,” the man said. Drinks would be on him?
Javier felt his cheeks flush, but he cleared his throat and nodded. “Yeah, sure. Thanks,” he said, offering the man and his cat a polite smile as they left.
It was when he was getting off work that he realized that he hadn’t told Danny everything. He cursed under his breath and pulled out his phone, calling his dog-sitter. “Maria? Can you bring Manola to my apartment?” he asked, hurrying down the street to the Willowtree. “Yeah, I know… the spare is above the door. Please? Yes, I will,” he promised, slipping into Spanish near the end. “Gracias, gracias, gracias. Adios,” he finished, slipping his phone back in his pocket.
He opened the door to the pub, shyly. It wasn’t exactly pressing… he could have waited until the next day and used the phone number Danny had written down on the client’s sheet.
“Then I bid you good day, Dr. Reyes, and thank you very much for helping Sara here. We’re both very grateful!” he said, sort of joking about the cat even though they probably were both grateful.
Danny smiled and left, holding his new kitten in his arms carefully. He would enjoy looking after Sara, and he knew that. As he wandered down the street towards his apartment block, he wondered if Javi would actually end up dropping into the bar sometime, if just to tell him more about Sara more than anything else. ------------------------------- By the time he went to work later on, Danny had gotten everything he needed for Sara and he had left her at home, curled up in her basket, with fresh food and water if she wanted it. When Javi actually entered the bar, Danny was just putting drinks down for a couple at a table. They were actually gay, but Danny didn’t really care. It wasn’t his business to ask.
He looked up as he heard the bar door open and he grinned, approaching Javi with a smile. “Hey, didn’t expect to see you here so soon. Want me to get you a table?” Danny offered, a bright and slightly encouraging smile on his lips. He could tell Javier was shy and Danny totally understood, but he figured talking would help him out of the ‘shy’ zone/area.
He spotted the young man putting drinks on a table for a pair of friends. Javier smiled at the pair and watched Danny carefully. He saw one of the friends kiss the other’s cheek, and Javier’s face flushed brightly and he looked away. It wasn’t that he didn’t like gay people, but he got embarrassed when accidentally looking at public displays of affection. He cleared his throat, looking over at Danny nervously. The young man grinned at him, approaching him with a smile. Javier smiled back, trying to wipe away the nervousness he felt. After all, it wasn’t like he was on a date or something. He was just doing an extension of his job.
“Hey, didn’t expect to see you here so soon.”
“What can I say? Couldn’t keep me away if you tried,” Javier grinned. “I didn’t expect to be here so soon…” He shifted his weight uncomfortably, not sure whether he should stay for a drink or just tell Danny and get on his way. Manola had plenty of food and water, and Maria would be with him anyway.
“Want me to get you a table?” Danny asked, encouragingly. Javier nodded, realizing how awkward he must appear. As social of a person as he was, he was still a bit shy about drinking. He was still just a cola type of person, as immature as it sounded.
“Yeah, uh… that’d be fine,” he said lamely, not sure what he was supposed to be doing. “I was just thinking that you might want to invest in a cone to keep Sara from chewing her tail. It wasn’t… very important… I just thought you might want to know…” Javier said lamely.
