Sally Sparrow was freezing. Even in her long coat, jeans, boots, and about four jumpers, today was the coldest day the UK had given out so far. She was shivering slightly as she walked towards another abandoned house.
It was kind of like Wester Drumlins, but it was bigger. Thinking of Wester Drumlins, despite the horrible Weeping Angels, made Sally smile. She hadn't actually seen the Doctor again, and she thought maybe that was for the best, but she couldn't help but feel a bit miffed about it.
Sally kicked the gates open instead of climbing them and she walked up the drive. She looked up at the house, and her eyes went wide as she gasped. No. No no no no, no way! Sally thought.
There were angels at almost every window. Her eyes flickered around them all. Her eyes then settled on the window she had been looking at originally, and saw that the angels no longer had their backs to her. The gates clanged shut, and Sally ran over to try and open them. She couldn't.
As climbing over never crossed her mind, Sally turned back to the house and began slowly walking up to it. To her regret, though, there was an angel at the front door. She kept her eyes on it, remembering the Doctor's advice: Don't turn your back, don't look away, and don't BLINK. Good luck. his voice seemed to echo through her head as she looked at the angel.
"The Doctor is a legend woven throughout history. When disaster comes, he's there. He brings a storm in his wake and he has one constant companion." ---
It had been a month, or almost a month, he felt like he was losing his own sense of time, he really ought to get a hold of it before he became too lost. However, he couldn't. He was too angry, it was rare in this regeneration, but, he was just so full of an old rage.
They took them away from him. The Angels, they took Rory, and Amelia, away from him, and now he could never see them again.
The Doctor tried to be fair. And kind, after all, he couldn't quite blame an entire race of creatures for just doing what they needed to do to survive. He tried very hard not to let the fury take control, like it had so many times since the end of the Time War.
The keyword being, he tried.
There was no stopping him right now, when The Doctor found the energy source connected to the Weeping Angels, the Time Lord pounced. Like an obsessed mad man, The Doctor arrived on the scene, completely oblivious to the old friend, or acquaintance at least, behind the TARDIS and by the gate. Stepping out of the TARDIS, he could see them. A whole hunting pack of them. Slowly, the anger rose in him.
"I'll give you an opportunity for mercy," The Doctor spoke in quiet rage, "The lot of you can turn and face each other, lock yourselves away for all eternity. Do that, and spare yourselves what's coming to you." He knew they could hear him, the question was, would they surrender, because The Doctor wasn't in a mood to spare anyone today.
Sally's eyes widened as all of a sudden a blue box appeared in front of her. She stepped around it and she saw him; but...but it wasn't...it wasn't him...was it?
Sally couldn't get a good look, but...the TARDIS, and, well, he had the same sort of sense about him. Sally walked up behind him, then moved to stand beside him, her eyes on the angels.
"Is...is that really you?" she asked the Doctor, keeping her eyes on the angels, but he'd probably know who she was talking to. "You've...you've changed." she said, frowning a bit. She'd want an explanation, later.
Sally looked behind her to check, and jumped slightly, because there was one behind her, too. She knew the Doctor had his eyes on the ones in front, so she kept her eyes on this one. "How many of them?" she asked.
The Doctor looked back as the young woman approached him. Well, that was fitting, Angels in the 2012 United Kingdom, and Sally Sparrow was there. It's like she's some kind of angel magnet. He ought to look after her. His eyes fell back onto the Angels, no looking away again! Bad Doctor!
"Is...is that really you?"
"Regeneration," The Doctor answered, "It's a trick, my people do, to cheat death."
"You've...you've changed."
"Oi," The Doctor shot back, "So've you." Well, not a whole lot, but it had been at least five years in relation to Sally's relative timeline since they'd last met. Hairstyles change, clothing changes, all of it, it's very humany-wumany to change so.
Though, from just a glance, The Doctor hadn't noticed any changes to Sally, so, he was completely bluffing and hoping she'd just agree while he was dealing with the Angels.
"How many of them?"
"Too many," The Doctor grumbled. That was a rude answer, but the hatred he felt for these, evil beings, grew the more he looked at them, "I'm working on the best way to dispatch them right now." Most times, that meant the quickest and most harmless way possible.
Not today, The Doctor wanted to make them suffer, to draw things out and keep it agonizingly slow. Oh, he was starting to sound like The Master. The Doctor blinked, best not go that far. There was no coming back from that cliff.
Sally nodded slowly. "Regeneration. Got it. I'll have to remember that one." she said, smiling a little. "Does....does it hurt? I know this isn't really the time, but...was he okay, in the end? The last you, I mean." Sally asked. It was silly, but despite her only knowing him for a short period of time, Sally cared about him.
Technically, he'd saved her life, in a manner of speaking. Sally was grateful, either way. When he shot back, slightly defensively in her opinion, Sally couldn't help but snicker a bit. "I know, I know. It's been, what, 4 or 5 years? That's what humans do." she pointed out, keeping her eyes on the angel in front of her.
Sally's smile faded at his dark tone. "What happened..?" she asked, curiously, looking at him. With anyone, not just the Doctor, Sally could pick up by their tone...well, the person's emotions. Most of the time, anyway. But it wouldn't take long for anyone to figure out the Doctor was angry.
Sally then realized what she'd done, and she looked back to the angel, taking a step back. It was directly in front of her, now. "How do we get rid of them this time?" she asked.
"Regeneration. Got it. I'll have to remember that one." she said, smiling a little. "Does....does it hurt? I know this isn't really the time, but...was he okay, in the end? The last you, I mean."
Oh, he rather didn't like answering that question. The last time, had been rather rough on him. Not the actual regeneration per say, more the emotional toll it had taken on him. The last regeneration had been quite rough indeed. Realizing he was just staring out at the Angels, The Doctor slowly nodded, "I'm always okay. I'm The King of Okay."
He teased her for changing as well, Sally smiled and agreed a bit, he liked that, she was quite clever, taking all of this in at once. Thank goodness for Sally Sparrow.
"What happened..?"
"It's a long story," The Doctor didn't want to get into it very much at the moment. Though, he supposed he could give Sally a bit of a promise when time passed, "I'll explain later." They had a far more pressing issue at the moment to deal with.
"How do we get rid of them this time?"
The Doctor smirked, "I'm going to bury them. Bury them so deep, they'll never harm another person again."
Sally noticed his hesitation before his reply, but she didn't push it. She nodded, too. "I'm ever so glad, that he was okay." she said. She then kept her eyes on the angel, her eyes examining it's face.
Sally wasn't the slightest bit worried or surprised about anything that anybody said so her any more. So she was taking it all in, believing in everything the Doctor was saying. What he said next caused Sally to smile.
"That had better be a promise." she joked, smiling despite the situation. And yes, even though they were almost complete strangers, Sally was pleased to see the Doctor again, even if it had to be this way.
His next sentence took a while to progress and the hatred was obvious in his tone. Sally however stayed determined. "Whatever you are doing, I'll help you. You know that right?"
"Yeah," The Doctor answered. Because, that had been a lie. The Tenth was far from okay when he died, alone, clearly very scared. That hadn't been the way he'd wanted to go. In fact, he'd never wanted to go at all. The Eleventh didn't blame him, how could you give up eternity?
"It's a long story, I'll explain later."
"That had better be a promise."
The Doctor's smile returned, "You bet." Then he told Sally his plan for the Angels. He hadn't quite worked out the mathematics yet, but he was getting there.
"Whatever you are doing, I'll help you. You know that right?"
"Got a calculator?" The Doctor quipped before nodding back, "Don't look away or blink, just, reach back, open the TARDIS doors, and get inside." He was nearly finished with the equation, and then he'd be right behind Sally making their escape.
Sally listened and nodded slowly. Then she shook her head. "Not on me, no." she said, referring to the calculator part. Then she did as he asked, reaching back and pushing open the TARDIS door, her eyes still on the angels.
Taking a deep breath as she went, Sally walked backwards into the TARDIS, her eyes on the angels. She went in as far as the rails, then she stood there to wait for the Doctor. She blinked a bit, and then the Angels were..well, they seemed to be trying to surround him.
"Doctor, come on!'' she called out. She didn't want him to be caught by angels. Well, she didn't want anyone to be caught by them, but still. She didn't want to witness this 'regeneration' progress just yet. She wasn't ready for that.
He chuckled just a bit as Sally confirmed that she hadn't had a calculator on her. The Doctor looked ahead at the Angels. The math was nearly done, or at least, he thought it was. He'd never been as good at computations than someone like Adric or The Master.
Sally headed into the TARDIS like he'd asked her too, which was perfect. Just a few more lines and he'd have the solution. It was really quite complex this math. It had taken the citizens of Logopolis thousands of years to perfect the art, and The Doctor even longer to agonize over.
Oh, he was talking about his real age again, oops.
"Doctor, come on!"
He slipped into the TARDIS after Sally as he muttered the solution to his computation. The Earth began to rumble just a bit, and The Doctor grinned. Circled around the TARDIS was a bunch of unsteady ground. As the Angels tried to surround the box, they all fell into the pit below. The Doctor beamed before looking to Sally and smirking a bit as he opened the door to reveal a lack of Weeping Angels.
"Block computation transfer. It takes awhile, but with math, you can do just about anything. I turned this landmass around us completely unstable. The Angels fell in and they'll remained buried." He left the part out about the creatures remaining underground for an eternity of agonizing hunger.
Sally's eyes widened as she looked out and around the TARDIS. The angels had vanished; Sally leaned back in and threw her arms around him in a hug (maybe awkwardly for him but not to her) and laughed. "You're a genius!'
And that was true; Sally would, of course, never have thought of that, but an amazing mind like the Doctor's could obviously do it in a flash. The concept of this amazed Sally slightly.
She realized she was still holding onto him and pulled away, blushing furiously, before offering a small smile and then looking around the TARDIS. "You've...redecorated her?"
The Doctor beamed as Sally hugged and praised him for his work, "Well, not to brag about it or anything, but yes, pretty much." He'd never shy away from the praise of being called a genius. The Doctor let out a short laugh Sally started looking around.
She seemed to be impressed by the TARDIS, and he knew that she had been in here once before, The Doctor was again happy for the excitement she had bouncing around.
"You've...redecorated her?"
"Well, not exactly, more like, she redecorated herself." Yes, that was about as simple as he could put it, no need to get to deep into the mechanics of the TARDIS.
"Redecorated herself, huh?" Sally looked around again, her eyes falling on the console for a few moments before she looked back to the Doctor. "She did a good job. But, the old one was nice too." she said. She probably shouldn't have been looking around that last time, but she'd noticed.
"So...what now?" she asked, looking at him. "You're not just going to...drop me off home and disappear, are you?" Sally asked. She wanted to stay; at least for a while. Traveling with him may not be an option, no matter how much she'd love that, but...
She wanted to at least talk with him some more before he flew out of her life again. At least you'd get to say goodbye, this time, Sally thought to herself as she awaited his answer.
Sally was looking about at the TARDIS, clearly impressed, though she seemed to have a fondness for the previous interior as well, "Ah, well, I used to have the old layout on the archive, but it was jettisoned, long story, hopefully nothing like that ever happens again. Messy business with a pocket universe."
The Doctor watched as the blonde asked what came next, he smiled a bit, because it sounded like she would very much like to come with him. He supposed, it couldn't hurt, if not just for a little while. Nodding, The Doctor smiled, "I could take you home, if you like. Though, come to me once, coincidence, twice, you've earned your travelers' pass."
"Come with me," The Doctor started, "Travel the stars and I'll show you the wonder out there." He paused before saying, "Of course, there will be danger out there."
Sally's eyes widened. She didn't even need to think. She just nodded, a grin spreading across her face. "I'd love to!'' she said enthusiastically. At his comment about danger, Sally nodded again, solemnly.
"I know. Of course there's going to be danger out there, but there's going to be amazing things too, I just know it. I'd love to come with you." she repeated, smiling. Sally hugged him tightly, not caring how awkward it may seem.
"Thank you." she said, pulling away to smile at him again. "For being willing to take me, I mean." she added, so he knew what she meant, and so he wasn't confused.
