Name:
Katharina Diederich
Age: Twenty-four.
Gender: Female.
Species: Dulcian.
Planet of Origin: Earth.
Occupation: Baker.
Physical Description: Katharina is a small woman – as are all Dulcians. She’s eleven inches past four feet and she doesn’t quite weigh one hundred pounds. Her bones are nearly hollow, making her a great deal lighter than if she had marrow. Due to this, a trip going down the stairs could easily end up in a hospital trip. Dulcians do not grow wisdom teeth, and they don’t have an appendix. They also lack a tailbone, making her skeleton slightly more different from that of a human’s. She has two hearts.
She has long brown hair that curls down her shoulders and to her back. Katharina usually has it tied up in a bun or a ponytail to keep it out of the way while she’s baking, but she refuses to cut it. She has wide eyes that are brown on the inside around the pupil and fading off into a grayish-blue color.’ She’s got a bright wide smile and she ensures that every stranger notices it.
She doesn’t have much of a fashion sense. Although Katharina does manage to make herself look presentable, she’s normally just found in a pair of jeans and an apron.
Personality: Katharina is a true Dulcian through and through. It’s literally impossible to get the girl angry – it’s simply not in her genetics. She respects where people come from and she can see all sides of an argument, making it hard for her to get sad about anything. Someone insults her? Well, that’s okay, because she really can see why they would think that, and it isn’t like it’s up to her to change someone’s mind, and she doesn’t mind the insults.
She’s a pleasant and kind person. If Katharina sees hungry people outside her bakery, she always insists they come sit down and have food. She volunteers constantly with the homeless shelters and she’s forged quite a few friendships that way. She’s met some remarkable people – both human and alien. Katharina has often been told she has the patience of a saint, and although she brushes it off, the Dulcian inability to get angry was replaced by double the dose of serenity. She is the ultimate mediator, as she can see objectively both sides of a situation, and can help people work out their differences.
Katharina is excellent when it comes to her intuitive side. Her parents accuse her of being too trusting and naïve, but Katharina knows very well when someone is hiding something from her. Still, though she knows when people mean to do her harm or ill-will, she’ll follow them for as long as they want her to. Behind every villain is a damaged hero – she’s a firm believer that people aren’t born evil. Her mild demeanor, empathy, and stubborn patience tend to help when dealing with the troubled youth she volunteers to help.
She’s the happiest when she’s baking. When she needs to clear her mind or think over something, she’ll take a jog through the park.
History: Her parents came to Earth shortly after the Island of Death was formed on Dulkis. They were afraid that the Dulcians would succumb to nuclear war with pressure from the other surrounding planets. Katharina’s parents, Enet and Kalan, chose Earth as it was far away from the grip of the Dominators, who were just beginning their reign on the Ten Galaxies. Katharina was born in London, and she went to public school.
She was teased for being ‘too nice’ and too much of a pushover, but she remained completely oblivious to the bullies. As much as they tried to get under her skin – insulting her mother, her father, herself – she brushed them off with a slight tilt of the head and a cheerful, “If you say so!”
The Dulcian’s parents had to pull her out of the school when physical education was required. She broke her bones a lot as a child due to the rough treatment the humans gave her. It wasn’t that they constantly abused her – her bones are hollow, making her much more fragile than humans. She was misdiagnosed with a form of Lobstein disease; brittle bones. Her parents knew that it was simply the Dulcian anatomy, but as the doctors were human, Enet and Kalan decided not to say anything.
Throughout her life, her parents let her explore space. She never visited Dulkis, as her parents were afraid that the Dominators had invaded and killed the rest of the Dulcians. The Dulcians were extreme pacifists – they wouldn’t raise a hand to defend themselves. So she explored planets and places ranging from Vega to Biblios. The Dulcians aren’t capable of time travel although they’re aware it can be done, but Katharina didn’t mind much. Truth be told, she’s a little wary of time travel. What if she accidentally hurt the person who created the ideas of cupcakes?
Growing up, Katharina volunteered at many community service organizations. She sat with people at the hospital, she helped with the homeless shelter, and she would bend over backwards to please anyone. Her favorite thing to do, however, was to bake for the people she helped. She was a gifted chef, and she often told her mother that she’d like to become a gourmet chef, the type she saw on human television.
That never did quite work out, but Rina doesn’t mind too much. After attending university for a year, she set up her own business. Rina’s Ritz isn’t a large or well-known business, but she makes a decent amount of profit from it. She makes all sorts of desserts and she caters with more than just desert, including Middle Eastern cuisine and tapas. So for now, Katharina is content with her little shop and helping humans and nonhumans.
Additional medical information: As with all Dulcians, Katharina lacks: wisdom teeth, her appendix, the ability to get goosebumps, and a tail bone. Her bones are also hollow, making her prone to breaking her bones. She has two hearts.
