Maria awoke about seven hours later, clutching one of the pillows close to her. Sitting up, she stretched her arms and yawned. Looking about the room she had been sleeping in, she wondered for just a moment on how she actually got there. "Oh.. right." She had almost forgot that Leon had carried her to bed.
As she walked out of Rio's room and down the hallway towards the control room. Not expecting the sight she walked in on. As soon as she walked into the console room, she saw a rather shiny, shirtless Leon, laying on the ground. Her face felt very warm all of a sudden, and she found herself staring at him.
Maria rubbed her eyes, trying to figure out what to say. "... Need.. Need a towel?" She asked, as she moved over towards him. It was just a bit awkward, considering she had only kissed him not too long ago.
"How'd it go?" She was referring to the TARDIS repairs that he'd been working on while she slept. Maria gently stroked the edge of the console, in a sort of apologetic sort of way. She really should find that manual, or stop trying to fix her altogether.
When she offered the towel, he craned his head slightly to glance up at her, an innocent expression in his eyes. He didn't understand why she suddenly seemed so flustered. Women were still a slight mystery to him and her sheepish mannerisms just made him shake his head.
"Non, I'm alright." He smiled reassuringly to her as he went to sit up. He used his forearm to pass along his forehead to wipe the light sheen of sweat from his eyes. He was still cold and waited for the tardis to warm up and reactivate. He had nearly forgotten how hot the tardis had been hours before. And the only reason he was sweating now was because the area under the console was quite hot, with all the wiring and thermal ducting.
"How'd it go?" Maria inquired, and Léon had to chuckle at her. "well, the stabilizer still needs work. I think there is stress fracture in the manifold, and a good few of your wiring had been chewed on.. Give ya three guesses who, Ma Lapin." He, of course meant Perry. Bloody space rodent was a menace.
"I also managed to repair the intake compressor. Shes far from 'good as new'.. but I think she'll be up to the task of taking us where we want to be without too much fuss." He chuckled lightly as he walked up to her, smiling down at her and shrugging softly. He noticed the flustered look on her face, and very much wanted to wrap her into a hug and dot her cheeks with a soft kiss. But he refrained..
"Did you at least sleep well?" he asked, gently . He placed a hand on her shoulder softly.
"Non, I'm alright." He replied with a smile, as he sat up. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and eyes with his forearm. She was really trying hard not to stare at him, but he was making that rather difficult. So in an attempt to distract herself, she put her attention to the center control console. Maria stroked the edge of it, as she asked him how it went. She heard that deep tone of his as he laughed at her.
"Well, the stabilizer still needs work. I think there is stress fracture in the manifold, and a good few of your wiring had been chewed on.. Give ya three guesses who, Ma Lapin." Maria flushed, giving him a short nod. "Perry.." That little blue green stripped, alien guinea pig, had caused so many problems for her and her TARDIS, that Maria had actually lost count.
"I also managed to repair the intake compressor. Shes far from 'good as new'.. but I think she'll be up to the task of taking us where we want to be without too much fuss." He chuckled again, and she could hear him getting closer. Turning around, she noticed that Leon was right in front of her. Her cheeks flushed as she realized just how close she was to him. Her eyes moving up from his chest to his face. She returned his smile with a rather shy one of her own. Why did he have to be shirtless? "Did you at least sleep well?" He asked, bringing her out of her thoughts by placing his hand on her shoulder.
Maria nodded again, "Better than I thought I would." She was still dwelling on that kiss, she hadn't meant... She let out a soft sigh, before studying his face. He hadn't had those scars last time they met. And there was another on his neck, she hadn't seen that one when he was actually wearing a shirt. In fact, he had several scars on him. Maria wanted to trace them with her fingers, perhaps to see if they were actually real. Then she realized she was staring just a bit long, and her blue eyes shot back up to his bright green.
"What happened?" Maria asked, her tone soft and gently with a slight hint of curiosity in the mix. "I mean.. I.. You don't have to answer, I just..." She couldn't help how flustered she sounded, as she tried to explain why she wanted to know.
"What happened?" Maria asked, and Léon tilted his head curiously at her, unsure what she was referring to before he realized she was looking at his face. At his scars. He looked away from her a little awkwardly. "I mean.. I.. You don't have to answer, I just..." "Non.. It's alright" he gently cut her off, returning his gaze to her.
He gently took her hand and lifted it to his face, letting her fingers trail the scar that ran across his face "This one.. I got in France when I was fourteen. I uhh.. It was pretty stupid. I ended up taking this girl to mid 1800's France. He called himself The Reaper. Said he knew my Papa.. He gave me this.. and this one" moving her hand to gently touch his lips where the other scar was. The light touch make him chuckle as his lips curved into a small smile. But the way the scar ran through his lips, he looked more like he was smirking.
"The one on my throat... um.. I.. I really dont like to talk about that one" he wouldnt even let her hand near it. It was his most traumatic memory. He reminded her of the one on his bicep from the snake bite when he was thriteen, and there were several more that trailed across his chest and abdomen. One in particular, was a few inches below his navel and ran neatly from hip to hip.
"As you can see.. I uh.. Kinda have a knack for getting into trouble" he chuckled awkwardly.
"Non.. It's alright." Leon cut her off, saving her from having to keep fumbling with her words. He took her right hand and lead it up to the scar across his nose.
"This one.. I got in France when I was fourteen. I uhh.. It was pretty stupid. I ended up taking this girl to mid 1800's France. He called himself the Reaper." Maria flinched at that name, her blue eyes automatically going to the hand he was holding. Straight to the scar in the middle of her hand, the one that matched on both sides. Reaper had thrown a knife through, when she had threatened to use her laser screwdriver. "Said he knew my Papa.. He gave me this.. and this one." He moved her hand to the scar on his lips, her cheeks were already turning back into a light shade of pink.
"The one on my throat... um.. I.. I really don't like to talk about that one." He didn't let her hand anywhere near that one, she nodded, if he couldn't talk about it that was fine. Then he moved her hand to where the snake bit was, the one he got when she and Rio first met him. Her face only turned a dark red, when he let her fingers trail over the scars on his chest and abdomen. "As you can see.. I uh.. Kinda have a knack for getting into trouble."
"Quite a.. Uh.. lot of trouble." Maria commented, a shy smile on her lips. "So... um.. Know where we've landed?" she asked, as she got her hand back to herself. Subconsciously, rubbing the scar with her thumb of her left hand, as she went to check her monitor. Only to remember a moment later, that she had yet to replace it. She really had to get on that as soon as she found a replacement.
And as he guided her finger over each of his scars, he found that he too was blushing. No one else had ever seen all his scars.. well.. all the scars on his upper body before. He leaned in and kissed her forehead and noticed her rubbing her hand uncomfortably and he tilted his head to the side as he gently took the hand, and kissed her palm where the scar was.
"So... um.. Know where we've landed?" she replied a little meekly and Leon did his classic mischievous smirk. "No idea! Let's go find out!" he beamed brightly at her and grasped her hand and led her to the door and happily swung them open.
Only to be hit in the face but a burst of blistering cold air and a face full of snow. The doors were immediately closed and he looked down at Maria. "Might want to get a coat, Lapin"
Her mind suddenly became blank as she felt his lips on her scar. She could feel how warm her cheeks felt, and hastily decided to distract herself. So, she asked him if he had any clues to where they might have landed.
"No idea!" Leon answered, grabbing ahold of her hand once more, before leading them to the door. "Let's go find out!"
Maria opened her mouth to say something along the lines of 'if we don't know where we are, and have no idea if the atmosphere could be habitable...' However, he had already opened the door, letting in a rather sharp gust of air, and bits of snow. Her body had shivered from the unexpected burst of cold weather. Not that she was actually cold, it was just a bit of a surprise.
The doors were shut not a moment later, and Maria could feel eyes on her. She looked up to the tall french man. "Might want to get a coat, Lapin." She arched an eyebrow at him, looking down at his bare chest, holding her eyes for a moment before returning to stare into his bright green. "I'm not the one half naked..." She pointed out, "Besides I'll be fine. And if, by some chance I catch some sort of Gallifreyan Flu, because I don't wear a proper coat. Well you can say 'I told you so.' Deal?"
"I'm not the one half naked..." Leon arched a brow at her curiously before glancing down at himself.. Ah.. right... no shirt.. "Besides I'll be fine." "But.." "And if, by some chance I catch some sort of Gallifreyan Flu, because I don't wear a proper coat. Well you can say 'I told you so.' Deal?" Leon huffed at her and narrowed those bright green eyes, looking down at her more like a big brother would "My Papa would skin me alive if I let something happen to you.. Go get a jacket, Lapin."
He went and collected his clothing, slipping them back on and looked at the long black sleeves.. He would need something just a tad warmer. He grumbled a bit as he went to dig into his Papa's 'borrowed' satchel. He found a long black leather duster coat and grinned brightly as he slipped it on. He'd nixed the coat from Shadow's TARDIS when he was nineteen.
"Alright.. Let's go have a look" he chirped brightly as he kissed her cheek and dragged her through the doors. "Okay... snow... snow... and... more snow... Oh look I think that's a building...wait... no.. that's a mound of snow... where the hell are we?"
He stared intently at the old road sign.. He had only been on Maria's TARDIS a few hours and the translation circuit hadn't quite worked it's magic yet. If it had been Spanish, or Italian, or some other language like that, he could have roughly guessed what it said since they had a similar alphabet.. This was completely different. "I... think... this is... Russian... It looks Russian.. Maria We're in Russia!! What year is it!??" he suddenly took Maria by her shoulders, gripping her anxiously. "Maria, I have to know the year!"
"My Papa would skin me alive, if I let something happen to you.. Go get a jacket, Lapin." Maria huffed right back at him, before walking off to find her jacket. It was back in Rio's old room, on the floor. She took a moment before picking it up and putting it on. Luckily, he hadn't specified what type of jacket she should be wearing. So he really couldn't complain about her wearing her light blue jean one, right?
When she got back to the console room, Leon was just slipping on a rather familiar looking duster coat. Maria caught herself staring at him once again. She was trying to figure out where she knew that coat from, it was like something from her past that she just couldn't get ahold of.
"Alright.. Let's go have a look." Leon got her out of her own thoughts with a kiss to her cheek, before pulling her along on their adventure. "Okay... snow... snow... and... more snow..." Maria couldn't help the soft giggle as he observed the endless amount of snow. "Oh look I think that's a building...wait... no.. that's a mound of snow..." She giggled again, as she made her own comment. "Perhaps it's a building covered in snow, that now looks like a mound?"
"where the hell are we?" Maria shrugged lightly at that question, she could guess, but it wouldn't exactly be right. Then she noticed how intently he seemed to be staring at an old road sign. "I... Think... this is... Russian... It looks Russian... Maria We're in Russia!!" Well the writting on the sign sure looked the part, so there was a high possiblility that they were in Russia. Maria nearly jumped as she felt his hands on her shoulders, causing her to stare up at him, slight worry in her blue eyes. "What year is it!??" She opened her mouth to say she didn't know the year, but he continued. "Maria, I have to know the year!"
"I.. I don't know it. Normally the monitor would at least tell me that... but..." She trailed off, the way he was acting was strange. Almost frantic. "We could try to ask someone, but.. Leon.. Why do you need to know?"
"I.. I don't know it. Normally the monitor would at least tell me that... but... We could try to ask someone, but.. Leon.. Why do you need to know?"
"My head hurts, Maria.. I.. I think that means it's a fixed point." He glanced back out, anxiously at the snow. Leon was pacing in place as he looked around. There was no guarantee that this was Russia. According to his papa, there were quite a few countries that used cyrillic. He bit his lip anxiously and looked down at Maria.
"Just... Just stay close to me, Lapin.. If we're where and when I think we are.. We'll have to leave... quickly"
"My head hurts, Maria.. I.. I think that means it's a fixed point." Leon explained as he started to pace in place. Maria could tell he was working something out in his head, but he still didn't answer her question as to why he wanted to know the year.
"Leon...?" She asked hesitantly, staring up at him. Luckily, it seemed that she managed to bring him out of his thoughts, as he looked back down at her. "Leon.. What is it?"
"Just... Just stay close to me, Lapin.." Leon started, "If we're where and when I think we are.. We'll have to leave... quickly." Maria wasn't so sure about this, for one, he still wasn't answering her questions... And for another... His actions so far, were starting to freak her out.
"It might be helpful, if you could tell me at least where you think we ar-" Maria jumped from the loud crack that suddenly popped into the air. She stopped and looked towards the direction of the sound, very much wanting to leave now. He said this was a fixed point, and normally in her experience.. Fixed points meant bad things were going to happen. Maria gently tugged on his arm, trying to lead him back to the TARDIS.
"It might be helpful, if you could tell me at least where you think we ar-"
The moment the gunshot cracked through the silence, Leon's hears began to pound, not because he'd been startled, but because he no longer needed to be told.. He knew. He could feel Maria try to tug him towards the TARDIS and he knew he should go with her but... He was frozen.
He then looked down at Maria and clutched her tightly in his arms. "Maria... I.. I have to do this.. Go back to the TARDIS" He knew she would argue with him, either insisting they leave or insisting she come with him. He couldn't allow either.
"I can't explain why, but I need you to trust me. Please." he softly pleaded. As he looked into her eyes, he leaned down, cradling her face, softly kissing her lips, closing his eyes. It was a soft and delicate press, his thumbs softly stroking her cheeks. "I'll only be a few minutes. Five minutes, I promise."
In the end he had to force her to go back to the TARDIS and lock her inside. "I'm sorry, Lapin.. I need you to trust me" he called to her through the doors. And then he ran into the village.....
Five minutes...... Five minutes turned into five hours. Leon slowly made his way back to the TARDIS, the look in his eyes, bewildered and lost as he finally reentered the TARDIS. He couldn't bring himself to look at Maria. But he needed her. He tightly wrapped his arms around her and before he could even answer a single question that surely would have been fired in his direction, his knees buckled. He couldn't do this. His hearts were breaking and he could never tell her what had happened. He cried softly on her shoulder as his arms tightened around her. "Lapin..... Maria... Oh god.... I.... I can't.."
Instead of being able to actually get Leon even an inch closer to the TARDIS, he had pulled her into his arms for a tight hug. "Maria... I.. I have to do this.." No he didn't, why did he have to do this? What did he have to do? "Go back to the TARDIS." Oh no. He was not going off on his own, while she waited in the TARDIS.
"What? Why?" Maria asked, sounded both confused and concerned. She tried to tug him towards the TARDIS again. Though he seemed quite adament in going where ever it was he had to be. "I can't explain why, but I need you to trust me. Please." Leon was pleading now, but she didn't want to let him go out alone.
"I do trust you-" She was cut off, when he leaned down and kissed her. Her cheeks flushed a light pink, and she curled her fingers into his jacket. She didn't want him to go, she wanted him to stay. She didn't want the kiss to end, as he pulled away. "I'll only be a few minutes. Five minutes, I promise."
Maria stared up at him, a rather stubborn look in her blue eyes. "No." She replied, "I'm coming with you, and you can either deal with that or do something about it." She really shouldn't have said that.. Cause the next thing Maria knew, she was brought back into the TARDIS and locked inside. She struggled to get the door open, even though she knew it wasn't going to budge. "I'm sorry, Lapin.. I need you to trust me."
"Leon. Don't do this, I can help..." She called back placing her hands on the doors, hoping he hadn't left yet. "Leon?" Maria tried again, and when she got no reply back... she slid to the floor, holding her knees close to her chest. He said five minutes... he promised. She could wait that long right?
Maria had given up on trying to get the TARDIS to work with her on saving Leon, or at least finding him, about an hour ago. Leon had been gone a lot longer than the five minutes he promised, and although at one or two points in the five hours that he had been missing... she might have threatened to let him sleep in the zero room... She really didn't mean that though, and immediately started to cry afterwards.
Then, finally! He walked slowly back into the ship. Maria stared over at him, about to remind him that he said five minutes, when she noticed the look on his face. "Leon..?" She asked softly, as he tightly held onto her. She nuzzled into his bare.... chest? It was then she realized that he was missing his clothes. "What... What happened.. to. to your clothes?" She asked, trying ever so hard to keep her eyes on his face. He didn't answer her question, instead he just cried into her shoulder and held on tighter. "Lapin..... Maria... Oh god.... I.... I can't.."
She bit her lip and ran her fingers through his hair, trying to comfort him. "You.. You don't have to say... If you don't want to.." Her voice wavered as if she was trying to keep from crying herself. She placed a kiss to his cheek, whispering softly. "It's alright, you don't have too.. I promise."
He wasn't sure what to say or feel anymore. All he could do was just hold Maria against him. Eventually he shuddered a sigh and brushed the blond hair away from her blue eyes. “I... I didn't mean to take so long. Are you alright? I.. I couldn't let you come with me. I'm sorry but.. I couldn't let you get hurt.” He tried to offer her a smile but the look faltered before it even appeared.
“Let's... go somewhere warm.. Away from all this snow.. Doesn’t even have to be Earth” Leon then had to stop himself. Maria was the time lord, he was only half.. He realized he was talking to her like she was the doe eyed companion. “I mean.. wherever you wanna go is fine... Oh wait.. Ange doesn't listen to you, does she?” he looked down at her with a wolfish grin. He had control of the TARDIS. Maria WAS his companion. Oh this was funny.
“Ange! Take us to Chloris! You know about Chloris, right, Maria? Huge jungle planet, 75% of the planet covered in dense rainforests, two suns. Bound to be fun, Ouais?” Leon was good at pretending to be chipper when he needed to be. “My grampa told me about it once as a kid.” The TARDIS effortlessly complied with Leon's request and Leon smirked that devilishly playful smirk. “See, Lapin? She listens. You just gotta know how to talk to her” he chirped as he let go of her and ran to the console.
