Rose had to get out of the flat. She just had to. Her mum was going on and on about something. She sort of regretted asking the Doctor to leave her at home for a couple of days. She pretended she was just going out to the corner shop but actually, as soon as she'd grabbed her phone and keys, she was walking much further than the corner shop. She was headed towards the park, actually. She had no idea why she was going to the one furthest away from her mum's flat, but she was just walking, allowing her legs to carry her. As Rose went, she thought about her recent travels with the Doctor.
She loved it, no doubt about that, but sometimes things could get a little scary, when it came to traveling. Like what if something got messed up and the timelines fell apart. But as long as everyone else was safe, Rose didn't mind herself getting killed. Though she was slightly worried about what would happen if she died in the past. Timelines...they were so complicated. But just getting to see things, how they were...and how they would be...Rose wouldn't have missed it for the world. It was a one-in-a-million chance, no way was she going to stop now.
Rose sat down on a bench in the park, looking around her at parents with little kids. She wondered if her family was ever like that, her mum, Rose and her dad, just playing at a park. But then she could also see kids with just their mums or dads, and Rose thought that was more like what she'd gone through; just her and her mum, at the park, Rose playing, Jackie socializing with other mums.
That had been what Jackie had been talking about before Rose left; some woman she remembered being friends with, who had dumped her for a reason Rose didn't know about; but she did remember her mother mentioning it before. Personally Rose thought Jackie was making a fuss over nothing, since friendships died all the time, but she never said that because she wasn't sure if her mother would be offended or not, which she most likely would be.
Rose sighed, leaning back on the bench to take in her surroundings. It would be a long two days, she knew that much for sure. Waiting for the Doctor, she figured, was always going to make sure that time passed extremely slowly. Annoyingly, that was just the truth of it.
Sébastien James Reid was in love with this park. He had been wary of it at first when Nina had dragged him to the park all those weeks ago. It wasn’t the park he loved, and it wasn’t anything remotely related to the park. It was the boy who frequented it that Sébastien found himself utterly smitten with. Nina often teased him about his (completely platonic, thank you very much) feelings for Gavri Lucien Keâts.
His mother had noticed the difference, but Sébastien suspected most mothers realize when their child has fallen head over heels. He spent most of his days playing sappy love songs on the violin and daydreaming about Gavri’s enchanting blue eyes. His mother tried to pry relentlessly to find the ‘girl’ who had stolen Sébastien’s heart. He didn’t have the heart to tell her that Gavri wasn’t a girl, so he merely shrugged off her questions and told her that they were the most fascinating and lovely person in the world. The entire universe, maybe.
He was careful not to refer to Gavri with a gender pronoun. He wanted neither to confirm nor deny his sexuality. In short, he had himself a very fine mess indeed.
So his mother called what had supposedly been one of her best mates when he was younger. He could vaguely remember the irritable and frazzled blonde lady and her daughter. The daughter had been around five years older than him, so he had never gotten on with her very well. The woman and her daughter had been very close to the family, especially when his father had died. But they stopped coming over once Sébastien began to play the violin professionally. His mum asked the woman – Jackie Tyler or something like that – what she had done when “Little Rose” had begun to like boys.
Sébastien had flushed guiltily before realizing that his mother still had no idea that Gavri was a boy and his mum was just asking for general help. He had taken that as his cue to leave. He had grabbed his violin and dashed to his and Gavri’s park. It was just a standard dog park (with some places for small children) with a jogger’s track encompassing it, but it was special to him. He had met his Gavri there. And he was supposed to meet with Gavri tonight, so he could just stay there until he was done speaking with the French boy.
His cheeks flushed a happy shade of pink as he thought about Gavri. There was a girl in the bench where he usually sat. Normally that would deter him and make him find a new place to sit, but he was in a good mood. It almost frightened him how happy he was. He smiled dreamily and sat next to the blonde. “It’s a beautiful day, isn’t it?” he asked, pulling his violin out of the case. “I love days like this,” he said wistfully. There was the sun in the sky, romance in the air, and no nagging mums to tell him to practice the violin. He played a few notes on the violin, humming along.
Rose glanced up as a boy approached the bench. She smiled up at him, and then he sat beside her. It was a little awkwardly silent for a moment or two, and then the boy next to her spoke, making her glance at him. Blonde hair, brown eyes...he reminded her very vaguely of someone, but Rose couldn't figure out who it was.
"It's a beautiful day, isn't it? I love days like this."
Rose smiled and nodded her head. "Yeah, same here." she agreed. "It's much better than the rain we usually have." she added. After all, rain was the worst thing to happen to the Earth...that is, weather wise. Luckily, though, Rose had missed the last couple of days, because she'd been with the Doctor. Apparently it had been a huge storm that she'd missed. Rose quite liked storms; the lightning was beautiful. Rain could be, too, but...it had bad timing.
Rose noticed that the boy was playing a few notes on a violin. She listened to the notes, fascinated. She quite liked violins, too; though she'd never really expressed this because last time she'd mentioned it, to her friends and to her mum, they had giggled and smirked and all sorts. Rose didn't really care what other people thought of her, except of course the Doctor, because she wanted to impress him.
"Sébastien James Reid, by the way."
"Rose Tyler. Nice to meet you, Sébastien. So you play violin? That's really cool." she said with a warm smile. As she spoke, and watched the boy and his violin, her mother's nagging/lecture/whatever came back to her.
"She only stopped wanting to be friends because of her son, professional violinist apparently! Well, I never! Don't expect me to go running back to apologize, honestly! People these days!"
Rose smiled to herself at the memory. Her mother did like to go on...just a bit. But...professional violinist...there were loads of those, right? And what if this boy wasn't professional? Just because he looked familiar didn't mean he had to be the son of Jackie's old friend.
“I don’t mind the rain that much,” Sébastien answered pensively, pulling his legs under him cheerfully. The last few nights had been spent in the rain with Gavri under the shade of the picnic gazebos. He’d worried, initially, that the poor French boy was going to get a cold from having to walk to and from where he lived (Sébastien couldn’t quite ever find out where that was – Gavri had always dodged the question rather cheerfully), so he had given him an umbrella with the Union Jack printed boldly on it. It wasn’t a very personal gift, but Gavri had seemed thankfully.
He smiled, content, as he continued to play the violin. “After the rain is the rainbow,” he pointed out, slipping out of his shoes and placing them on the ground in front of the bench.
Rose Tyler? He thought back to his mum, during one of the few times he actually listened to her. She’d mentioned “Little Rose”, the daughter of Jackie Tyler. Rose Tyler? He looked at her critically, a dark eyebrow raised inquisitively. “Yeah, I play the violin. Ever since I was little,” he answered. He tried not to mention the fact that he was a very well-known teenage in the classical field, because people normally didn’t react very nicely. “I think it’s cool, too. Do you know how to play?”
“No relation to Jackie Tyler?” he asked tentatively. “I only ask because my mum used to be friends with this woman named Jackie and she had a daughter named Rose. Or Rose was a nickname,” Sébastien said. “But my mum said ‘Little Rose’, and you aren’t little,” he said bluntly, then backpedaled furiously. “Err, not to say that you’re big! I meant… I meant you’re older than I am, yeah? I just turned fifteen last week,” he explained, continuing the song on the violin. It was something he’d made up, although it sounded suspiciously like ‘La Marseilles’ and ‘God Save The Queen’ mixed into one song.
Sébastien smiled and looked up again. “So… what brings you here?” he asked curiously.
Rose nodded as he spoke, then grinned. "That's true." she agreed. "And rainbows are beautiful." she added as a sort of afterthought.
As he spoke about playing the violin since he was little, Rose's mind (again) went back to the lecture her mother had given her. "Ever since he was little, she said he's been practicing. Pheh! Violin is far too..." but Jackie hadn't found the right word, so had left it hanging. She shook her head at his question, though. "No, but I kind of want to learn, but at the same time I have a feeling I wouldn't go as long as you did. You know?"
“No relation to Jackie Tyler? I only ask because my mum used to be friends with this woman named Jackie and she had a daughter named Rose. Or Rose was a nickname. But my mum said ‘Little Rose’, and you aren’t little, Err, not to say that you’re big! I meant… I meant you’re older than I am, yeah? I just turned fifteen last week."
As soon as he said Jackie Tyler, it all clicked in Rose's head. This was the violinist who's mother had dumped Jackie because of fame. It all made sense...no wonder he looked familiar, since they used to see each other whenever their mothers wanted to meet up. It was slightly awkward, since it was...what, a 5 year difference between the two of them? Rose smiled as Sébastien began to ramble.
"Yes, I'm related to her. She's my mum, and I can sort of remember you and your mum. Mine does tend to go on and on about their little...ah...fall out. And yeah, I'm older than you. I'm 21, so that's...6 years difference. Not too bad, I guess. But it must have been awkward when we were kids." Rose said calmly. So she was close, after all she did guess 5 years. Only one year off!
“So… what brings you here?”
Rose rolled her eyes a little at the memory of her reason. "My mum was going on and on about something...she tends to do that. I had to get out of there. You'd understand if you knew her well. You should ask your mum for details, I'm sure she'd know." she said, chuckling softly.
“You should learn!” he chirped brightly, finishing his song midnote. He turned to her on the bench, watching her curiously. “I could help, if you like. I’m not much of a teacher, but I could at least teach you ‘twinkle twinkle little star’,” he said cheerfully. “Don’t worry about trying to match me. The only reason I stuck with violin,” Sébastien admitted, his cheeks coloring a little from embarrassment, “was because my father said I couldn’t. I’m a bad child – I dedicate my entire life to proving him wrong,” he smirked. If his father ever had done anything good for either his mum or Sébastien, it was insisting that Sébastien wasn’t talented.
He beamed brightly as she told him that she remembered him and his mum. “I remember, too. You look different now,” he said, tilting his head as he examined her. “Your eyes, I mean. They seem smarter,” he shrugged. His cheeks burned as she mentioned their ‘fall out’, and Sébastien squirmed guiltily. He didn’t like feeling as though he was the cause of two friends abandoning each other but… he was, wasn’t he? He rubbed the back of his neck. “My mum’s been trying to get into contact with her. Says she wants to know about…” he trailed off, clearing his throat.
Relationship stuff. The small frown on his face flickered into a smile as he thought about the French boy again, vaguely listening to Rose as she told him that she was in the park to escape her mother’s ranting. “Yeah, the same here. I remember whenever they got together they would gossip for hours. It was so boring!” He scrunched his nose up. “Anyway… I’m also here waiting for someone,” he said shyly, strumming on the violin strings with his fingers gingerly. “But we never meet each other until after the dark,” he said wistfully, looking up at the sky and silently wishing the sun would hurry up and go down.
"You should learn! I could help, if you like. I’m not much of a teacher, but I could at least teach you ‘twinkle twinkle little star’. Don’t worry about trying to match me. The only reason I stuck with violin was because my father said I couldn’t. I’m a bad child – I dedicate my entire life to proving him wrong,”
Rose smiled and nodded. "Sure, we should meet up one time, and maybe you could show me the ropes?" she suggested. At the bad child comment, she laughed a little. "I didn't really get to speak to my dad for him to tell me I couldn't do something. He...passed on when I was little. And as for Mum...she doesn't really say much about me failing in...whatever. She's a bit optimistic when it comes to me." she explained with a laugh, shaking off the memories of her long-gone father. Sure, she missed him, but she had to move on.
“I remember, too. You look different now. Your eyes, I mean. They seem smarter. My mum’s been trying to get into contact with her. Says she wants to know about…”
When he said about her eyes, Rose beamed. "Thanks! Your quite different too, from what I remember. But still a blondie, I see." she said with another grin. When he trailed off, Rose tilted her head. "About what? And, um, if your mum starts ranting about Jackie when you get home...it's probably because she badmouthed her. After all, my mum's very fierce...always has been." she said. "But...she might give your mum some help. Jackie's hard to read." she was calling her mum 'Jackie' since Sébastien's mother's name escaped her, and it was slightly easier.
“Yeah, the same here. I remember whenever they got together they would gossip for hours. It was so boring!”
Rose nodded, rolling her eyes. "Oh God, I remember. It was like, Mum would always say 'We're going soon, Rose' and it would take both of them at least another half an hour to finish talking. Honestly, I don't know how they went on for so long."
“Anyway… I’m also here waiting for someone. But we never meet each other until after the dark.”
Rose grinned slightly at this. "Ah, a special someone, huh? Who is it? A friend, a crush maybe?" it wasn't really any of her business, and he didn't have to tell her, but she was genuinely interested, since she went through the same stage at when she was the same age. "The one thing I hate about waiting is that time seems to pass by so slowly. I've got someone...and I told him to leave me here on Earth for a few days...and it's killing me waiting for him!" suddenly, Rose realized she'd said 'Earth'. Whoops! Oh well, maybe Sébastien wouldn't notice.
Still a blondie? Sébastien chuckled and nodded, running his hands through his hair and mussing it up. Gavri hated messy hair – particularly when Sébastien would mess the poor boy’s hair up. That being said, he did it quite a lot to see the boy get frustrated and annoyed. It seemed to him that torturing Gavri’s hair was not the way to make a good impression, but there was something incredibly appealing about Gavri when he would attempt to fix his hair while giving Sébastien the evil eye. “Yeah, my mum would never let me dye my hair,” he said, sighing.
“Erm… well,” he said, a little awkwardly. This was definitely not a subject he usually broached with almost strangers. "She wants to talk to your mum about... relationships,” he said lamely, scratching the back of his neck. “I mean… erm… how to handle… teenagers in a relationship,” he explained. He squirmed on the park bench, uncomfortable. “Which, I’m not in a relationship, by the way! She just thinks I am.” He decided not to mention that he really wanted to be in a relationship – because, really, he was certain that his feelings for Gavri were just very intense and… and platonic. Yeah, sure. Definitely.
He grinned when she mentioned that Jackie might badmouth her. She called her mother by her first name. Sébastien felt a little childish referring to his mum as ‘mum’, then. “Angela,” he said, the name feeling strange and foreign on his lips, “is feisty, too. I remember your mum. She used to scare me,” he admitted.
His cheeks reddened as she asked about a ‘special someone’. A friend or a crush? Which one was Gavri? He looked up the sky, a lazy smile on his face. “Both, I think,” he admitted, his cheeks still flushed happily. “They’re the best person I’ve ever met. Absolutely wonderful,” he said wistfully. He looked at her thoughtfully as she mentioned time passing slowly. “I know what you mean. It’s terrible. It’s like… like…” he sighed and shrugged. “I don’t know. It’s like time is sentient and likes to mess with us,” he grinned.
And then she said something about leaving her on Earth. A dark eyebrow raised, and he stared at her. His Gavri had said something similar to that, hadn’t he? About his family being on Earth for now? “Yeah…” he said, looking up at her. “What do you mean leaving you on Earth? Is he from somewhere else?” he asked tentatively, unsure if it were just an expression. He didn’t want to admit that he knew of other species because of Nina.
Rose snickered a little bit. "Wow...relationship stuff. I pity you. Mothers aren't easygoing on topics like that." she said sympathetically, grinning at Sébastien.
Oh, Angela! Yes, that was her name. Rose remembered now. She chuckled softly and nodded. "I remember. That's probably why she and Jackie were friends, because they were both feisty and they liked to gossip to no end." Rose said. She also knew that Seb's father was out of the picture, but she wasn't about to mention that.
Rose chuckled at that, and nodded. "Well, good luck with them, then. They sound wonderful, and I'm sure it'll be nice for both of you. Just, if you plan on telling your mother...do it delicately, that's what I've learned to do." she advised.
Damn, he'd noticed. She sighed and nodded, moving her head slightly to get the blonde hair out of her face. "Yeah, you could say that...he isn't human, and that's for sure, and we're not always on Earth." Rose was surprised; He didn't seem all that shocked.
“Yeah,” Sébastien said, twiddling his thumbs awkwardly. “I was going to break it to her gently, you know. It’s not like I’m really keen of the idea of waltzing up to her and declaring that I sort of like someone,” he said, looking down at his hands nervously. “But thank you for the luck,” he said cheerfully, putting his violin back in the case and messing with the straps again. “It’s great. I’m really happy when I’m with him, you know?” he asked blithely. “And it’s a little silly because I just met him, but he…” he trailed off, his ears and cheeks turning a bright shade of red.
Well, way to accidentally admit it to a virtual stranger. His fingers tightened around the case and he stared down at the ground. “Um… sorry,” he muttered lamely, listening to her as she told him about her friend that left her behind on Earth. Perhaps if he could forgive her for her slip of the tongue, she could forgive him for his.
He wasn’t human? His eyes narrowed and he leaned his head against the back of the bench, staring up at the sky again. “I understand,” he said slowly. “My best friend… she isn’t from Earth either. She’s from another dimension… and she isn’t a human.”
"Yeah, that might help a little bit, if you break it to her gently." Rose agreed with a grin. She remembered speaking about this topic with her mum...and Lord knew she had regretted it afterwards, because Jackie asked so many questions, as well as teasing, though Rose doubted Angela would do that. Then Rose caught Sébastien saying 'he'. Ah, so that was the reason his mum hadn't found out sooner. Well, one of the reasons.
"Don't be sorry." Rose said, with a shrug. "I won't tell anyone, promise."she added with a grin. After all, she saw nothing wrong with it anyway, but it wasn't her story to tell. She wouldn't get a thrill out of it, so why do it? Pointless, really.
"It's funny, but if I told anyone else they wouldn't believe it. It's...sort of exciting to have an alien friend, isn't it?" Rose asked, a soft smile appearing on her lips.
Sébastien nodded slowly, thinking over her words. His mum might not have a problem with him liking another guy after all. He’d never heard her say anything bad about gay people. He really was just assuming that she would take it badly. He looked over at Rose pensively. She was grinning at him, and it was settling his nerves slightly. He was probably overreacting.
Definitely overreacting, Nina whispered, and Sébastien shivered at the sudden voice.
“Thank you,” he said finally, when she told him that she wouldn’t tell on him. He looked up at the sky as she talked about her alien friend. “Well, I believe you. Absolutely. And... well, I’m not sure if my friend is alien, but she isn’t human,” Sébastien said.
Nina huffed haughtily inside of him, and he felt her lazily surfacing. “I’m not an alien,” she said through his voice, his voice slightly higher. A childish pout crossed his lips and he leaned back, crossing his arms grumpily. Nina looked over at Rose and squinted Sébastien’s eyes, peering at her. “I like you. You’re pretty.”
Rose noticed him relax and she nodded a tiny bit to herself, satisfied. She hated it when other people felt awkward or nervous around her and she always tried to be reassuring to keep them at ease. When people were anxious or awkward around her it made her sort of feel anxious and awkward, and that wasn't a comfortable feeling.
"You're welcome." Rose replied, smiling and turning her gaze to the sky. It was nice. No rain and no invasions, just a peaceful day. Well, peaceful for some people. It kind of depended on your family or personality. Somewhere people could be arguing, or sulking, or something. Rose was glad she was away from her mum at that moment, because Jackie was probably ranting to herself.
At the slight change in pitch and attitude Rose returned her gaze to Sebby and smiled. She could tell that this was his alien friend. It just made sense. Then she commented about Rose being pretty. "Well thanks. I would say the same, but since I can only see Sébastien, I wouldn't really be complimenting you yourself." she said, grinning. Compliments were awesome. They made people feel good and made you feel good. Win-win situation.
Nina nodded thoughtfully. “Trust me,” she said. “I’m very pretty. Sebby doesn’t think so, but Sebby only likes boys,” she laughed. She put her head in Rose’s lap. “I like that name! Rooossseeee! My name is Nina! But not Nina Reid,” she corrected before the error had been made. “I’m not actually related to my Sebby, he’s only my master. I think it’d be fun to have a sister!” she cheered happily.
“Hey! You could be my sister! Nina Tyler!” she chirped, clapping her hands excitedly, and then sniffed. “I know your friend. His name’s the Doctor, except that’s not actually his name. Is it?” she giggled, and then tilted her head. “How do I know that? How do we know that, Sebby?” she wondered, stretching and grinning up at Rose Tyler.
“You should trust me, though. I’m very pretty. Or, at least, I make people think I’m pretty.” She held up Sébastien’s hands, and the fingers glowed a bright red briefly before they went back to normal. “Have you ever met anyone like me?”
