He had hoped together, but despite Rose's immediate response she seemed more fractured than pleased at their current situation. The Doctor couldn't say the same.
After all, he knew himself. Had known just how likely it was the 'other' him would try to foist care upon Rose. Because that's what the Doctor did with things he didn't understand. He relied on his companions to take care of the humany bits so he could focus more on the big picture.
No, the Doctor wasn't exactly displeased by his situation. If he had to be stuck with one measly heart, then he would want to be stuck with Rose.
Rose watched the TARDIS fade away, for what she realized was the last time. She sighed deeply, making sure her tears and hurt stayed in, before she took a couple of steps back and reached her hand out to hold his. The second Doctor. He wasn't exactly her Doctor, but...he was the human version of him, one that will grow old with her...one that she could spend the rest of her life with, and know that he wouldn't have to live alone after that.
So, with a heavy heart, she looked to him, then back at her mother, then she gave the human Doctor's hand a squeeze. The TARDIS was long gone, and so was the proper Doctor, but...even if it would take her a while, Rose had a feeling that she would eventually love this Doctor. She realized it would be somewhat awkward for her to keep calling him that, since it might bring slight pain to her heart, so after a little pause, Rose spoke.
"So," she said. Once that word was out of her mouth she was braver. "What am I going to call you? I mean, sure, if you really want I could call you the Doctor, but...I just...in a way I think it would make me miss him. But either way...it's up to you." Rose said, hoping that he understood her.
Rose heard Jackie phoning her dad, so he could come and get them, but she didn't pay any attention to her mother's whispered explanations. She suddenly remembered something, and smiled a little, turning to the other Doctor and still holding his hand. "You know...with one heart, living a human life...you might have to settle down...live in a house, get a job...you sure you can handle that kind of thing?" she was actually being serious, because the Doctor...
From what she knew, he wasn't used to life on Earth, settled down. Rose wondered if this Doctor would be prepared to start trying to have a...normal kind of lifestyle.
"I am still the Doctor, Rose," he said gently. He could manage gentle and kind for her sake. "John Smith, if you prefer. No... John Noble."
He couldn't forget Donna. Not when there was only a negligible chance that she could ever keep remembering him.
And the Doctor could understand Rose's worries about missing the... well, the Time Lord-y him, he was anxious about that himself. The facts of the matter though, were that he had been going by the Doctor for over a millennia (he'd given up counting and just started giving random numbers out for his age) and he was always going to look like the Doctor besides.
What caught his attention more was Rose's last question.
You sure you can handle that kind of thing?
Clenching the TARDIS coral in his hand, the Doctor considered Rose's question for a time. He still was not going to be trapped forever, neither of them were, but it would be a long time.
And the Doctor was not entirely sure if he could work for Torchwood, even this world's version. Perhaps there was a U.N.I.T. in this dimension? He had, after all, spent a good amount of time as their scientific advisor before.
The Doctor cocked his head slightly, watching Rose.
"An actual, proper house?" he teased, pretending to be affronted, "with carpets? And doors?"
Rose thought about it, then nodded, a smile spreading across her face despite the situation at hand. "John Noble. I like it. It suits you." she said, looking at him. John...it was quite a plain name and yet...it worked for him. Normal was good. Normal was...human-y. That sounded like the kind of thing he'd say. Human-y.
At his next sentences, Rose chuckled softly. "Why, of course." she said, playing along. "Don't worry, I'll sort a house out for both of us, I mean, if you want." she said. She was thinking hard as she spoke, about what would happen now.
She wanted to...well, speak to him. See just how different he was from the Doctor she had spent so much time with. Getting to know him seemed...well, pointless, since she already did know him, but....well, it just seemed right.
"Rose, John, come on, Pete's here!" Jackie called, walking over to the van that Rose's dad was in. Rose looked up at John with a smile, before walking over to the van with him, getting into the back.
John Noble it was. Rassilon, he was going to miss Donna. That woman had saved him more times than he even cared to count. And that was just 'the Doctor' him, if it weren't for Donna Noble this him would not exist.
Well, he might... but just as a hand, a relic passed from Jack to the Master to Time Lord-y him, locked away in the TARDIS for UNIT or Torchwood to find and mull over.
"I'm John Noble; I like blue and Rose Tyler," he announced.
Seeing Pete again was a wonder, and it took the Doctor a moment to recover. The last time he'd seen Peter Tyler, he had just saved their valiant child from slipping into hell.
"Heya Pete!" The Doctor greeted enthusiastically. "Great to see you without worrying about the universe collapsing for once."
Pete was clearly mistrustful. Rose might not be his actual daughter, but she was close enough, and not just in terms of biology. He, Rose, Jackie, Tony... they were a family, and a tight knit one at that.
Rose grinned at that; she was clearly going to like this guy, a lot. John Noble...well, she'd see how that would turn out. She got her dad to drop them off in front of some cafes. She turned to John, and smiled. "Before I start house-hunting, do you want to get something to eat?" she asked.
She did feel a lot better, she had to say. Some of the things John was saying...it just made her smile, which was a trait he'd picked up from the Doctor, obviously. She paused, thinking. That DoctorDonna thing...it had all seemed a bit too convenient...
"Hey...John?" Rose waited a few moments for him to process that she was speaking to him, before she asked the question. "Is...is Donna going to be okay? With that DoctorDonna head and stuff?" she asked.
Rose was tentative; she knew John would probably consider Donna his best friend, since she was the one who got him into existence, and also he had the memories of the Doctor, too. "I'm just...a little worried because...she's a human with a Time Lord brain, plus the instinct of human...I guess you could call it paranoid." she said.
The ride had gone remarkably well, if a little tense and awkward with Pete who clearly did not know what to do with him. Jackie hadn't slapped him yet though, so clearly that was a plus!
It must be the face. You had to love this face.
"I could murder some chips right about now. We could grabber a burger?"
His question was just a hint tentative. Rose had not given him any indication, indeed the opposite, that she wanted to drive him off but... well, this was Rose. There was no way the Doctor could handle being human without her. No way that he wanted to imagine, at any rate.
"Is...is Donna going to be okay? With that DoctorDonna head and stuff?
By that same token, he couldn't lie to Rose.
"Do you remember how it felt, having the Bad Wolf in your head? Or do you still only remember a song, Rose?" John began quietly.
"Sure, that sounds great." Rose nodded, and hooked her arm through his, before beginning to walk with him. Her favorite cafe, with good chips and burgers, was only 5-10 minutes from here, and that was where she was leading him. She wasn't considering this as a date or anything, though she supposed it counted.
When John asked about the Bad Wolf/TARDIS thing, she thought about it, before nodding slowly. "I can remember it, when I think hard enough....it felt like my head was going to burn up..." and as she said this, Rose put the pieces together and her eyes widened. "Oh God...so Donna...the Doctor will have to take it away from her?"
Rose thought. But if it was something imprinted in her mind, the Doctor couldn't just take it out of her like he did when Rose had the Bad Wolf in her head. She thought about this as the two walked along together. Suddenly, she fitted it all together again and turned to look at John as they walked, her eyes even wider, if that was possible.
"He's going to have to take some of her memories, right? Because since the DoctorDonna thing is imprinted into her mind, he can't take it out the same way he did with me. So...a mind wipe would probably be the only option...is it?" Rose checked.
Hand in hand, arm in arm with Rose Tyler. Life really might not get any better than this in the Doctor's opinion. Not when it came to walking the slow path, waiting for excitement could be agonizing, but somehow... somehow Rose could fill that gap.
He waited quietly for Rose's answer, partially to give her time to think and partially because he did not really want to think about any of it himself.
"He's going to have to take all of her memories, Rose," he whispered. "Every memory of him, of me, to seal off the Time Lord part of her mind. Your brains are so fragile, you can't handle the sight of the Vortex, the knowledge of centuries."
His voice was cracking, but John couldn't help that.
Rose listened and gasped, her eyes wide. "All of her memories? No!" she whispered, shocked. As soon as John's voice cracked, Rose forgot all about awkwardness and getting to know him, and she stopped walking to put her arms around him in a tight hug.
"Oh God...I'm so so sorry...isn't there something he can do?" she said, referring to the Doctor. It wasn't fair for Donna to forget everything she'd seen, because...well, Rose knew what it was like out in space and time, and forgetting all that...
It would be impossible to think of right now, but Rose would probably feel worthless if she had to forget everything she'd seen with the Doctor...the people she'd met, the aliens she'd faced...it was all so beautiful and Rose wouldn't have missed it for the world...
Rose couldn't picture herself having to forget. She pitied Donna greatly, and hoped the Doctor could fix her.
"Nothing that I know of," The Doctor stared intently at their hands. "I'm rare enough. There's never been a human Time Lord metacrisis before for a very good reason. There can't be. Especially not overnight."
Morose now, the Doctor promised himself that if he ever saw another dalek, he would be sure to end its misery without angsting over the morality of such an action.
Never again would he be that weak.

Rose sighed softly. "I'm so sorry." she said gently, taking his hand so they could walk along together again. "I hope...he can find a cure..." she said.
Rose wondered how John actually really felt about this, after all it was all thanks to Donna that he was brought into existence. It must be like losing a brother or sister, she thought to herself, though she didn't have any so she wouldn't know.
She led John into her favorite cafe, and ordered a burger and chips for herself. The lady turned to John, asking what he wanted, while Rose drifted off into her thoughts, as her eyes scanned round for a table.
The Doctor squeezed her hand in reply, because there really wasn't anything he could say to that. Of course he wanted Donna to be able to remember him. Not just this him, but the Time Lord who had taken her to the stars. Who she'd faced Adipose, the fires of Pompeii, and the horrible slavery of the Ood with. He wanted Donna to remember just how wonderful and amazing a person she was, because he knew, he had heard just how she felt about herself.
Yelling at the world because she never thought she was good enough.
This from Donna Noble, the most important woman in all of creation.
"Maybe he'll find a miracle like you did," the Doctor offered, not sounding especially hopeful about it.
It was easier to just order a plain burger and chips like Rose and try not to be too morose. Rose had paid, which was good, because the Doctor's thoughts had jolted suddenly to, "I'm going to need money, aren't I?" he asked Rose as they moved to a table. "Never really understood that.... Where do you get money, again?"
"Yeah, I really hope so." Rose said, nodding, but then she dropped the subject as they went to sit at a table. She sat down, then giggled. "I'm afraid so, yes you're going to need money."
"You get it by working, of course. That's the only way you can really do it, unless you live with someone who supplies the money for you. But usually it's best to work yourself. It's good to have experience for future reference." Rose said.
This was the first time she was taking the lead, that she was explaining something to...well, someone that was almost the Doctor. It was weird but she was enjoying taking the lead, talking about something that she knew loads about.
Is this what the Doctor had felt all those times he'd had to explain things to her? Now Rose realized why the old version of him had always seemed so smug about knowing things that Rose, poor human Rose, didn't know. Was she pitying her past now? What in the world was Rose Tyler turning to nowadays?[/font]
