Zoe Elizabeth Heriot was getting tired of UNIT’s incessant calls. You offer to be a scientific advisor one time and suddenly they think they can pull you out of your advanced biomolecular physics class to gallivant across the whole of England in search of their white rabbits. True, their ‘white rabbits’ were usually of global importance and required immediate attention, but Zoe was still allowed to complain and be bleary-eyed and cross as she crossed the soggy English ground. The bright green rain boots sunk in the ground and the deluge of rain bounced off the equally bright green rain hat.
It was a rather miserable Tuesday morning in the merry month of October. The previous Monday she had been in class when a stern UNIT officer had requested the presence of Zoe Herriot for what seemed like the hundredth time in a week (although it was twenty-seventh time in over four hundred days, in all fairness to their independence). She had never understood why they went to her – of all the geniuses in the world, surely they had one working for UNIT? She had overheard a few of them discussing the ‘last time’ she worked for them on her first excursion with them.
She’d been prepared to dismiss them as crazy, but she was aware there were parts of her memory that she was missing. Certainly that wouldn’t have been as worrying, if she didn’t have a strongly eidetic memory. If she couldn’t remember something, someone must have caused that. And Zoe Heriot did not like the idea of someone crawling around inside her mind.
Zoe ducked under the large canopy that UNIT had set up to protect the ‘evidence’ from the rain. There were only about ten other workers inside of the canopy, all crowded around an object in the center. She looked curiously at the officer that had escorted her to the canopy. She removed the bright green hat. “Usually you only use me for my computations,” she said, joining the throng of scientists.
It looked like some sort of clear garbage bag had been put over the robot. The helmet vaguely resembled a two handled tea kettle with slits for the eyes that almost resembled tears. The bag containing the Cyberman – she recognized it from the Wheel – contained some sort of fluid. “I’d like to take a sample of the fluid,” she said, looking up to one of the scientists across from her.
“That’s impossible. We’re under strict orders not to open the container.”
Zoe rolled her eyes. “And how do you expect to learn if you don’t investigate?” she asked pointedly, standing up and brushing off her rain slicker and putting it beside the bag. “Why did you bring me in?” she asked curiously.
The officer – a colonel, Zoe thought she remembered him saying – looked at the other scientists and cocked his head, a nonverbal cue for them to leave the canopy. Once they were alone, the colonel crouched beside the Cyberman. “We know that you’ve worked with the Doctor.”
“That’s hardly an accurate statement,” Zoe argued. “I helped get the Cybermen off the Wheel. The boy who wore the female garments, he traveled with the Doctor. James Robert McCrimmon. They must have returned to Earth by now.”
“This is the sixth Cyberman pod we’ve found,” the colonel continued. “The previous mentioned the Doctor.”
Zoe looked at the deactivated Cyberman carefully. “Is this some sort of… embryonic fluid?” she asked. “I don’t understand what you expect me to do if I can’t take samples. It’s obvious that the Cyberman didn’t land here – something put it here, so I can’t do calculations to determine where it came from.” The colonel gave a brief nod, and Zoe turned away to cross over to the table and rifle through their supplies for a sampling tube.
She heard the squelch of the bag ripping open. “Hey,” she said, a note of irritation in her voice, “be careful when opening it, Colonel.”
“Zoe!”
The voice was strangled and choked. Zoe looked behind her, and took a step backwards, stumbling over her feet. The Cyberman had both hands on the Colonel’s neck and threw him across the room. There was a sickening crack and Zoe winced. She hurried out of the canopy, looking around for the other members of UNIT. The scientists stared at her and began approaching.
“You will be like us.”
Zoe stumbled back inside the canopy as the scientists followed her. The unison, sing-song chants were enough to put chills on her arms even without the glazed and dead expressions in the scientist’s eyes. She glanced behind her to the Cyberman. It was just now getting to its feet, its movements slow and clunky. Zoe’s mind switched over from panic to analyzing her surroundings. She measured each possible escape route and, with a slight shriek of fear, ducked by the Cyberman and ran out of the canopy.
Shezaan was bored. It was a common occurrence when his master was at work and Manola was at the dog sitter's. He flopped down on his side to lay under the coffee table and closed those soft dark blue eyes and stretched, feeling the claws extend from little silver colored paws. His tail twitched restlessly. He opened one eye and stared at the clock, that seemed to be ticking extra slowly, just to annoy him. 6:45 am. Javier had just left the house to head to work.
He closed his eyes and tried to occupy his thoughts to help pass the time. After what felt like a good several hours, puzzling over the mysteries of the universe, wondering how his brother was fairing, and imagining ways to make Javier happy, he finally opened his eyes and looked hopefully up at the clock.. 6:47 am. Shezaan whined and rolled onto his back kicking those little cat legs in a childish tantrum. “I'm so boooooored” he wailed before deciding to do away with his cat-like body.
His body slowly became a transparent ghostlike figure before vanishing into a soft wisp of pink smoke. The smoke whiled and twisted, rising up until the vague figure of a human stood in it's place. Shezaan sighed and ran his fingers through the long strands of soft blond hair and over his throat to the collar Javier had given him when he thought that jinn was just a cat. Shezaan wore it with pride. It was a flashy pink collar beset with white and pink glitzy rhinestones. He affectionately fingered the little silver bell and the tag Javier had made for him, feeling the indention of the engraving. 'Guapo'.
He walked aimlessly through the house. His fingers absently trailing over different things in the house. Javier's desk, his dresser, The chair he liked to sit in the most, and finally just flopped onto Javier's bed and stared at the ceiling. He wanted to go outside and explore. It was so boring sitting in the house for eight hours alone every day. Javier had often requested that Shezaan not leave the house.. for his own safety. Or at least, that's what Javier explained. Not that Javier didn't want a hyperactive jinn running around London causing mischief while he was gone.
And normally, Shezaan was a very compliant servant, never complaining and always eager to serve. But... He teeeeechnically wasn't disobeying Javier. After all.. He never said 'I wish'... just 'Please don't'.. Shezaan smiled and decided today was the perfect day to explore. Ah but what to wear? Shezaan was good at recreating clothing from images he saw to cloth himself. Oh.. Maybe those magazines that Javier had stacked on the kitchen counter. He plucked one up and the first image he found was a woman advertizing men's cologne.
She somewhat resembled Shezaan with the dark blue eyes, long blond hair and long thin body. Of course, Shazaan was much more beautiful and could certainly perfect this look. With a flourish of his fingers, Shezaan was wearing a very low cut v-neck white shirt and a short black shirt that stopped a good three inches above his knee. And, obviously six inch stiletto heels. Shezzy was looking sassy and he smiled, adjusting his collar.
It was raining but that was not going to bother Shezaan at all. He plucked up one of the extra umbrellas and took a casual stroll down the sidewalk, only occasionally hopping off of the sidewalk and into the street to splash in a puddle like a child. His wanderings eventually led him to a park. The park looked relatively boring and he had full intentions to just keep walking.... Until..
“Help!”
He tilted his head to the side and took off at a full run, completely unhindered by the heels he wore. When he saw when he got there had him skidding to a halt and tilting his head to the side. Big huge metal person thing was closing in on a human girl. “Umm... Hey.. I dont think she want's a hug” he casually said as he walked up tapping the metal man on it's shoulder.
Oh, great. There was a model running after her and the Cyberman. She was missing class for this? She paused in her running, looking at the woman and the metal creature. The woman poked the Cyberman, and said that Zoe didn’t want a hug. She stared at her, absolutely dumbfounded. “Are you an idiot?” she hissed as the Cyberman turned around and grabbed the lady by the neck, pushing her back. Zoe scowled, her question answered.
“You will be like us,” the Cyberman said, the voice hollow and almost melodic. “You will join us.” Zoe picked up a rock and tossed it in her hand experimentally. She quickly calculated the velocity and trajectory she would need to throw the rock at, and of course, she’d have to take into account the speed and direction of wind. Her mind instantly ran through the calculations.
“Hey, Metal Man!” Zoe yelled. The Cyberman, trying to kill the woman, didn’t seem to care too much about her attempt to bait it. She tossed the rock in her hand once more, and then slung it. It landed with a sharp crack against the head, and the Cyberman took a step back. She shrugged at the model, an ‘I’m-not-risking-my-butt-to-save-yours’ shrug, and ran off again. Well, at least you could always count on attractive models to keep a Cyberman distracted.
Shezaan blinked rather innocently as the Cyberman took hold of his throat and tilted his head. Normally he'd have been just fine with this. It wasn't like he needed air to breathe and it didn't really hurt. What he DID mind was the fact that the metal man had crushed that delicate silver bell on his collar. This upset him for two very important reasons. Firstly, that bell had been a gift from his master and it was a treasured item. Secondly and somewhat more importantly, If Shezaan when home with a mangled collar, Javier would know Shezaan had been up to something. Shezaan whimpered at the idea of Javi getting upset with him.
He heard the clank of the rock striking the skull of them metal man and Shezaan offered a smile at the little girl. It was just enough of a distraction. “You're a bully..” he said, perhaps a little too cheerfully as his hands wrapped around the arm of the metal man. The feel of static was building in the air, leaving an almost metallic taste in his mouth. The hair on his head began to stand on end and small sparks flickered around him. “I dont like bullies. You know what I do to bullies? I do this to bullies”
The sound in the air was like a sharp crack as he sent a massive jolt of electricity through the cyberman, his normally dark blue eyes a fierce pale blue. He held the Cyberman there and smiled pleasantly as the creature's voice crackled and wavered before the metal man dropped to it's knees, unmoving.. But it was still firmly grasping his neck. Shezaan huffed a little and looked around. Was it okay to go into his natural smoke-like form? Was anyone watching? The last thing he wanted was to get Javier in trouble. But.. He didn’t see anyone other than the little girl who was running away.. Maybe she wouldn’t notice. He closed his eyes as his body began to whither and shift into a wisp of soft pink tendrils of smoke and coiled around the metal man until he reformed himself behind it, dusting off his hands. “There.. Much better”
Great. She was now running for her life from both a Cyberman and a homicidal model who could turn into thin air. Torn between her preservation instincts and her scientific curiosity, Zoe stared at the woman, her body tensed to begin the long run. It was a few hours to London, but Zoe still had her student card for the buses, and she was sure UNIT would loan her the rest of the change needed. She took a step forwards as the model reappeared.
Zoe was much more open-minded than some of her fellow peers, and it was for that reason that she didn’t doubt her sanity when she took into account that the model had both electrocuted a Cyberman, turned into pink dusty molecules and then reappeared all within three minutes. Zoe stared at the lady, her arms crossed. “You shouldn’t have done that,” Zoe said, kicking the Cyberman with her foot. Her rubber shoes saved her from the electrocution as she saw the body spark.
“Now we can’t examine it as quickly. You’ve most likely damaged the data core, where all the information it contains is held. It’s a vital part of any machine, and it’ll take ages for me to recover it.” Well, ages for Zoe Herriot was more like thirty minutes to the average human, but she was impatient when it came to knowledge. “I’m sure UNIT will want to question you as you’ve single-handedly nearly destroyed their lead to the Cyber invasion.”
She shrugged and stared up at woman. “I could put in a good word, if you let me examine you.”
Shezaan was too busy brushing himself off to notice the little girl come back his way. In fact, he became all the less aware of her approach when he realized that his bell wasn't making any sound when he shifted. Dark blue eyes went wide as he reached to unclasp the collar and held the collar in his hand. The bell had been crushed. If he had a heart to speak of, it would have been just as pathetically crumpled as his little bell and his lip quivered.
“You shouldn’t have done that,”
“Javier will be so mad at me” he lamented, nodding in agreement as his eyes moved from the ruined bell to the girl. He sheepishly moved his fingers through his hair to brush the long bangs from his face and offered a sheepish smile down to her.
“Now we can’t examine it as quickly.”
He tilted his head slightly as she went on to explain her annoyance with his actions. She certainly dint speak like any little girl he'd ever met before. “I'm sorry” he whimpered softly before his eyes traveled back to the bell in his hands.. He could always try to uncrumple it, but Shezaan was better at creating than he was repairing. He chewed his lips nervously. He could always create another bell, but then it wouldn't be his special collar anymore and that thought just filled him with such anxiety. He was going to have to confess to Javi that he'd left the house... and got into trouble.
“I could put in a good word, if you let me examine you.”
Oh that's right. He'd forgotten she was even there. His eyes locked with hers curiously. “Examine me? Will it take long?” he asked tilting his head gently, fingers still fidgeting with the bell. It wasn't that he really had anything else to do right that moment, but Shezaan was so terribly impatient. But he was quite eager to please and she did seem quite cross with him. He glanced down at the bell once more and then back to the girl. Then.. a brilliant idea struck him. “Ohh! Do you know how to fix bells? I... I would... You could examine me all day if you could fix it! Fair trade?”
Zoe shrugged when she asked if it would take long. “It depends,” she said honestly. Now that she examined the woman closer, she seemed a little... masculine. Although Zoe was no expert in anthropology, she would tell a male skeleton apart from a female skeleton quickly. The facial structures were different, particularly around the eyes. This woman – or man – had a masculine skeleton structure, no matter how feminine his features.
Still, he was rather pretty. And if he wanted to be a girl, then who was Zoe to stop her? After all, Jamie seemed rather comfortable in a skirt, too. “Fix bells?” she repeated, taking the bell from her carefully. “Well... I’m not normally a bell-fixer,” Zoe said, a little put off that the whole of scientific inquiry depended on her fixing a bell. A bell that she had no idea how to fix. She was about to suggest another bargain when she looked back up and saw the pitiful expression on her face.
“But it can’t be too hard, especially not for me,” Zoe said, not sounding at all arrogant. She glanced back to where the electrocuted Cyberman laid. “Shouldn’t we make sure that there aren’t more of them?” she pointed out, looking around. “And we’re nowhere near London. That’s where the university I study at is. I’ve a keycard for the labs. I’m sure there’s something there that could work on the bell...” she said thoughtfully.
“Why is it so important to you anyway?” she asked, looking down at it critically. “It’s only a pet store type – you could easily just buy another one.”
He pondered her words carefully, nodding as she continued. What ever those shiny men in the suits where, he was certain they weren't the nice sort and was certain he didn't want to meet any more of them. He smirked playfully and closed those dark blue eyes and folded his hands together, gracefully lacing his well manicured fingers together and blew out a slow and long exhale as a soft billow of pink smoke like energy circled around him. And he vanished.
Within only a few short moments, he reappeared, a bright and cheerful smile on his face as he grinned down at her and leaned down, their noses nearly touching “That's the only one” he nodded firmly and drossed his arms. “Now what, Lady 'Bell Mender'?” he chirped. He tilted his head sadly when she mentioned they were no where near London and he grinned. “OH! I know London!! Big Spinny wheel thing by the river!!!” and snatched her up into his arms and before she had a moment to pretest about his sudden proximity, they were smack dab in the middle of London's heavy traffic.
Wonderful. The androgynous figure – who she was certain had a male skeletal structure, but other than that ‘he’ was quite feminine, too much so to be labeled a ‘he’ – disappeared without a trace. Zoe crossed her arms, looking rather put out. She turned on her heels, prepared to march her way back to UNIT headquarters and demand compensation for making her miss her class. While it was awful they had lost members of their team, it wasn’t her job to be a fighter. She was a scientist.
The creature reappeared next to her and Zoe jumped, clamping a hand over her mouth to cut short her shriek of alarm. She rolled her eyes and crossed her arms, mimicking it. “Yeah, Big Spinny Wheel by the ri—” Zoe’s mocking tone was cut short when the creature grabbed her and she yelped, flailing indignantly as the world disappeared from beneath her for a moment, and then she was staring at a bus that was only a few meters from slamming into the pair. She grabbed its hand and tugged the creature away, much to the distress of the cars in that lane, if the squealing of tires, the horns, and the screaming drivers were any indication.
There was a loud crash somewhere to their right as a car slammed on its break to avoid hitting them, unfortunately the car behind them hadn’t been so quick to stop. Zoe continued dragging her or him (Zoe wasn’t sure) off, wincing as she heard another car slam into the bus to their left. She pushed the modelesque person-thing into an alley, dragging towards the university. “Why would you put us in the middle of the busiest street in London?” she asked, putting her hands on her hips and staring up.
She peeked her head past the alley. “Okay, here. Come on,” she said, taking the weirdo by the hand again and going inside of the university’s science building, going down into the labs and running her student card through the slot to open the lab door. It flashed her name briefly, and she took the bell and set it on the table, staring at it contemplatively. “I can do this.”
“Why would you put us in the middle of the busiest street in London?”
Shezaan glanced down at her meekly with a sheepish grin. “It's not.. exactly where I meant to bring us.. I dont always get it right..This one time! I accidentally materialized right inside of a wall!” his lip quivered into a pout as he batted those dark blue eyes at her. “It was awful. I thought I was going to be stuck forever. My caretaker had to tear the wall apart to get me out.”
He watched fascinated as the little plastic card made the door beep and her name appeared. He stood, awestruck door a moment as he patted himself looking something he could use to try that.. all he had was Javier's old driver's licence that Shezzy decided to keep. He swiped it through the device curiously and jumped back when it bade a loud klaxon at him. His hair bristled as he hissed at it, bearing cat like fangs for a moment, extending his nails and swatting his hand at it.
But the young human, unamused, tugged him into the room and he pouted sadly at her and hovered cross-legged in the air as he watched curiously as she tried to 'un-crush' his bell.. Shezaan quickly got bored and began innocently poking at different experiments in the room. “What's this button do?”
Zoe rolled her eyes as he tried to put a driver’s license through the card swipe. “Must you really make so much noise?’ she asked sternly, turning to him and crossing her arms again. “Honestly. We’re not supposed to bring guests in here. So be quiet,” she said, wagging a finger at him. Zoe supposed that this was her tragic flaw – curiosity. If she weren’t so curious, she wouldn’t be risking her academic career chasing after the information that this… thing… might not even be able to provide to her.
And all for the sake of a bell. She sighed, still annoyed that he wouldn’t tell her the significance of the bell. It didn’t appear to be connected to its life force, as it was quite broken and he was still alive and well. Or at least as far as she could tell. Maybe his erratic behavior was caused by his impending death. Zoe peered at him thoughtfully. No, she decided. This creature couldn’t die elegantly if his afterlife depended on it.
“Will you stop touching things?” she asked, exasperated. Honestly, it was like dealing with a child! Or Jamie. Zoe paused, a frown appearing on her features. Who was Jamie, and why had she thought of that name? Zoe shrugged it off uneasily, storing it away in her thoughts to contemplate later. For now she was concerned with fixing this stupid bell so that she could examine the blond. She grabbed a tool and put it inside the bell, putting all of her strength into pressing down on it. Eventually the bell began to uncrinkle, and about ten minutes later, she had almost gotten it back to its former glory. She shook the bell from side to side, and it made a victorious little twinkle.
“That’s as good as you’re getting,” she said, tossing it to him.
Shezaan pouted softly as she scolded him and immediately smoothed out his dress, shifting awkwardly from one foot to the other, showing amazing command of balance despite wearing six inch stiletto shoes. His hands then folded sheepishly behind his back as he meekly walked over and peered over Zoe's shoulder to watch as she repaired his precious bell. His dark blue eyes went alight with joy when it made that soft and melodic tinkle.
“That’s as good as you’re getting,”
“Oh thank you, thank you, thank you!!” he exclaimed and wrapped his arms around the small woman and dotted a kiss to her nose before relinquishing his grasp and immediately fastened the bell back to his collar. He daintily stepped out of his shoes and hopped up onto the table. “So a bargain has been made and I must hold up to my half.. You said you wanted samples?” he inquired tilting his head to the side, curiously, holding out his arm to her, submissively.
As Shezaan hopped up on the table, Zoe cringed and help up her hands. "Hey!" she hissed. "Be careful. If you break something, that's on me!" Well, she would get UNIT to make some elaborate story up about how she had... well, Zoe decided that the elaborate story was up to them to decide. "And no kissing," she added, rubbing her nose irritably. Just who did this creature think he was? Honestly, the nerve of him. "Got it?"
But at least he was willing to keep up his end of the deal. She took his arm and a testing tube. "Alright, hold on." She took out the needle and cleaned it, wiping his arm clean as well with the alcohol. "This will only hurt for a moment or two," she said pleasantly. She would give him a band aid and a sucker later on or something. Instead of blood in the tube, however, there was bright pink floating mass. "What are you?" she questioned, a hint of awe in her voice.
