The Mentor walked along the oh so noisy street. Fortunately he had learned how to block out the noise that he did not want to hear so that he can listen for things that are more interesting. He wondered just how these Earthlings could walk around without worrying about anything. He did know that if they knew that there were aliens walking these same streets that their behavior would be drastically different. The Time Lord walked past a bookstore, but then stopped and turned back around to look inside. It was nothing but rows of books, maybe some audio ones here and there. He did not like the audio books, he saw them as a lazy way to read a book. He came across one that interested him, it would certainly be different than reading The Time Machine over and over as he has been.
Walking up to the counter he paid for the book and walked out, putting the book into his interdimensional pockets of his long frock coat. He noticed one kid looking at him in amazement, reading the kid's mind he found out he saw what Mentor did with the book. Ko'an simply winked at the kid as he walked passed him. He grinned as the kid tried explaining to his mother what Ko'an did with the book with such small pockets that should only be able to contain a pair of gloves and a cellphone. Of course the kid did not get very far. Nor was Mentor going to turn back and tell the mother that her son was telling the truth, the last thing he wanted was Torchwood to be coming after him again.
Turning the corner Ko'an came to a stop; dead stop in his tracks as though there was an invisible brick wall in front of him. The Time Lord kept his gaze steady, not wanting to look more like a freak than what he already is. Just standing there was enough for people to give him strange looks as they walked passed him. He found the mind that was of interest to him, so much interest that he could not pass it up. Strangely this person's mind told him that this young man did not know entirely what he was. Oh, this was just so interesting. He had to find this boy! Spinning around ninety degrees to his left, the Time Lord quickly crossed the street, his eyes peeled for who he was looking for. It was not long though, he found the one that caught his interest in a library. No he really did not see him, but he knew he was in there.
Ko'an quickly walked up the stairs, taking note of where all the security cameras were, all the emergency exists as well as remembering what triggered them and what did not. He was not planning on anything hasty but for just in case things were not going to plan. Stepping inside he could now smell this young Time Lord, but he was not on the first floor. From the strength of the smell he could tell the lad was at least another one or two floors up. Stepping on the escalator, the Time Lord removed his gloves, taking not on the sign above of what categories were available on the next floor.
FICTION, SCIENCE FICTION, ROMANCE, CHILDREN'S BOOKS, CHILDREN'S MOVIES
Not the part of the library he knew a person of this mind would be. Walking around to the next escalator he looked up to the sign above again and smiled lightly. The next floor was the one to find this lad. His smile vanished as he stepped off and looked around, there were lots of aisles.. of course this was the biggest library here. Ko'an hoped that he will be able to catch the young Time Lord here and not have to go on a wild chase for him before Torchwood found him or some other agency that collected aliens.
So many rows, and the scent was moving. Oh, just how was he going to stop this lad from getting too far? He looked to the book collection rolling rack that was sitting motionless in front of him, filled with unwanted books. He could hear the mind he was after, he was making his way to the small break that was between the over large bookshelves. He had to act quickly and precisely, he looked to the woman who was loading the rolling rack. Waiting for her to move further down, and she did. With a shove the cart went speeding down, and stopped just as the lad must have stopped at the sight of it or almost fell completely over it.
Adjusting his scarf he walked up, "Sorry about that. It was the only way that I could stop you at the moment when I devising a way of stopping you from moving around long enough for me to catch you before someone else does." He looked at the much, much younger Time Lord with curiosity, "And already you have shown just how out of tune you are with the environment."

John was moving along the isles putting certain books away. He had been at this for over three hours now, and was glad to be on his last book. He looked at the title, 'A history of science'. He then walked up to the floor above him towards the science area. " Hello John. Still working on the books I see?" he looked up at the sound of his name, to see Kara one of the librarians smiling at him. He grinned in return " This is the last of it. I swear they just give me the majority of the books to put away, for torture." He paused and looked down at the trolley full of books that she was working on. " If you want I could help you after i'am done. It's really no bother." He motioned towards her trolley. " Oh no I'am fine, you just go off and finish your work." With one last exchange of smiles John went off in search for his books resting place.
He skimmed the books along the isles, looking for a place to put the one in his hand. Around his third isle he finally found its correct spot and put it down. Feeling relieved that he finally got to go rest, he started to head out of the isle. Right before he was able to step out, a book trolley ran in front of him almost making him trip. "Sorry about that. It was the only way that I could stop you at the moment when I devising a way of stopping you from moving around long enough for me to catch you before someone else does." He looked at the much, much younger Time Lord with curiosity, "And already you have shown just how out of tune you are with the environment." He looked at the strange man in front of him. What on Earth was he talking about, and why did he think almost killing him was a good way of stopping him. " Sorry? I think your mistaking me for someone else." He stepped around the trolley and began to make his way out of the library. " I hope you find whoever you were looking for though" He called from over his shoulder.
Ko'an looked down at the lad, looking at him like he did not notice the strange looks he was receiving. So the young man could not tell that he was looking right at an elder Time Lord? Well the young man really was not in tune with the Time Lord abilities that were hidden away. There was so much more that there was to be taught. But where to start? The Time Lord watched as John walked away.
Oh no he was not going to allow him to walk away so easily, he could see that the boy really did not have much respect for elders. He walked down the aisle and grabbed the boy by the shoulder, "Use your Time Lord senses boy. I'm another Time Lord like you. Don't try telling me you are not because I sense that you are." He took the book from the boy's hand and put it in the spot it was meant to go, "I tracked you down from the other side of the city because I was able to sense you." He looked to the clock, "Your shift is over, correct? Follow me." Then Ko'an turned around, releasing the boy and started walking. It was really up to the boy if he was going to follow or not.
He looked at the man a little frightened as he took a hold of his shoulder. "Use your Time Lord senses boy. I'm another Time Lord like you. Don't try telling me you are not because I sense that you are." He took the book from the boy's hand and put it in the spot it was meant to go, "I tracked you down from the other side of the city because I was able to sense you." He looked to the clock, "Your shift is over, correct? Follow me."[/i][/font] John watched as the other Time Lord walked away. John turned away from him starting to walk the other way, he made it the the stairway down when he stopped himself. He could tell that John was a Time Lord, from the other side of London! And now he wanted John To follow him. Maybe he would teach John how to be a Time Lord, or whatever they did on Gallifrey. ' No John don't be stupid! He could be a murderer for all you know. Just walk out of here and forget this ever happened.' He started walking down the stairs. ' Just walk away, just walk away. Just walk away.' He stopped halfway down, and with a sigh turned around and started running back towards the other Time Lord. ' John you are a idiot.'
He ran up beside the other Time Lord. " Okay I guess it wouldn't hurt to hear what you have to say."
Ko'an knew that the boy did not follow him as he went down the escalator, because by now the boy would have been either protesting or asking an endless stream of questions that would not end until Mentor said something after enduring it for some time. No matter, he knew the boy would become curious and follow him eventually, or look around the city to search for him.
The Time Lord stepped off the moving stairs and was heading to the front door when he heard his voice, "No.. in fact it would be of some use for you if you pay attention and take in what there is to teach you." Ko'an turned his head to look at him, "What is your name?"
"No.. in fact it would be of some use for you if you pay attention and take in what there is to teach you." Ko'an turned his head to look at him, "What is your name?" " John Flask. And what if I don't want to know what you have to teach me?" He looked up at the other time lord. John wasn't sure if he even wanted to be Time Lord. He had spent most of his life here on Earth anyway. He didn't even know much about Time Lord analogy, a part from the two heart's but that's kind of hard to miss. He stopped walking and faced the other Time Lord. " I'am practically human anyway, why would I even want to learn about the Time Lord's?" What had the Time Lords ever done for him. His parents had left him on Earth when he was 20, then two weeks later he learns that Gallifrey was blown up? Even if there were other Time Lords who survived after that, they never came to find him. They just left him there, without a second thought. Why the hell would he want to learn more about them.
The Time Lords eyes narrowed some, "John Flask. You will want to learn about being a Time Lord because you have no idea how many enemies of Time Lords there are here on this planet that regularly attack people or invade. Some of the people may be those that you know or care about John. That is why I am going to teach you. So you can defend those who cannot." He straightened himself, "There are too few Time Lords, some that are getting on in years, others that are at deaths door steps." He stepped to the door and held it open, "What ever is here in the universe of our kind, must step up and take those of us that are too old or dying to defend the universe from those that seek to destroy civilizations. Including Earth. Since Earth is your home, would you like to learn how to defend it?" Yes it was a lot of talk, but he was trying to get the young man to see a point.
Ko'an stepped aside as a woman with three children walked through the door, his pale blue eyes looked back to John, "If your generation does not learn what you are, what you can do. Who will defend the universe from the Daleks and others who seek to destroy and murder?" He tilted his head for a moment, sensing the boy was thinking and stepped out of the door.
He listened to what the Time Lord had to say. He had no idea how many enemy's Time Lords had, and he had no idea how to defend the people he loved, and protect his beloved planet. He watched the mother and her three children walk in, he noticed one of the children was Julie, the little girl who was rather found of John. She wriggled away from her mother and ran up to hug John. " Hey John! Sorry I haven't been at the library as much, my mummy quit her job so she's been at home all the time now. Its actually kind of annoying sense she can't read story's as well as you can. Do you think you'd be able to read one to me today?" John looked down at Julie. He swallowed, if he didn't learn the ways of the Time Lords, Julie could be one of the people he endangered. He smiled down at her. " Not today Julie, I have to go to school. And I might not be around as much either." He gently pulled Julie off of him. " Why don't you go catch up with your mum." With one last wave Julie raced after her mum into the Library.
He watched after Julie for a few seconds, thinking to himself. He looked back at the other Time Lord. " I will listen to what you have to teach me. But don't think I want to, i'am only doing this because I have to." That was a complete lie. Of course John wanted to learn more about his species, but was he going to tell him that, of course not. He had after all just met him, he still wasn't so sure if he was a murderer or not.
The Time Lord had not noticed that the young man did not follow him out, or that he was stopped by one of the children that were entering the library with that woman. Ko'an came to a stop and looked around for a minute or two before turning his attention to John, "Very well. By the time I am done teaching you don't be surprised if you want to learn more." He then turned around and started walking, first he needed to know what the boy already knows, "Tell me what you already know. Be careful not to speak too loudly though. You never know who just might be listening in." If the boy had known anything about enemies of Time Lords he would have been already spotting them all around the city as they walked. Ko'an guessed that since the boy was not able to sense his approach that he knew nothing about the aliens that could harm him.
"Tell me what you already know. Be careful not to speak too loudly though. You never know who just might be listening in." What did John know about the Time Lords? That was a very good question. He didn't know much, other then they had two hearts, and regenerated when their body's became too old or when they were mortally wounded. Other then that nothing. He was very young when he was left on Gallifrey, so he didn't remember much of the Time Lords. " Well, I know that all Time Lords have two hearts. And, that we can regenerate. Other then that, nothing." He was actually kind of embarrassed from how little he knew about his own people. But that quickly went away when he remembered what had happened to them, and his parents, and was replaced with confusion and anger.
The Mentor nodded, it was a good start with what John already knows. But that was not enough if the boy was going to survive. He had a lot to learn. The Time Lord, thought quietly, "Well you do have a good start there. But did you know that a Time Lord has a limited number of times one can regenerate." Ko'an looked to John when he sensed that there was a strange energy of tension surrounded the young man, "I sense that you are angry and confused." The Time Lord came to a stop and pulled the boy aside with him, "What's wrong John?" The Mentor looked around for a moment, then back to John.
John looked up at Ko'an when he said he could 'sense' that he was upset. John stiffened a little bit. He didn't usually talk about his past, or his feelings. "Nothings wrong." John pushed his currant emotions back, and masked his face in a smile. Hoping that this 'Ko'an' would by it like most people did. He turned away from him and continued walking down the sidewalk. He didn't really know where he was going, but it was better then having to talk about his 'feelings'. " So ' Ko'an', your also a Time Lord?" He was trying to change the topic to something else. Anything really, just so he wouldn't have to tell this other 'time lord' about why he felt betrayed by his own kind, and his family.
Ko'an watched as the boy seemed to stiffen after the Time Lord mentioned that he could sense some emotions that the young man was experiencing. But then the boy said that he was fine and forced a smile onto his face before continuing to walk, "You do know that it is better to talk about something than to bottle it in until you explode with depression and rage right? Ko'an did start to feel a little concerned with the emotions that he was sensing that John was experiencing. Even as the boy seemed to be talking calmly, "Yes I am a Time Lord. My chosen name is The Mentor but I prefer to be called by Ko'an. I'm six hundred years old, and I did live on Galifrey."
The Time Lord looked at the boy, studying him to figure out just why the young man was feeling the emotions that he was sensing. John was too young to have actually experienced the war, at least the fighting part. Which Ko'an was glad to have figured out. No child should fight in a war, no matter his or her age. Ko'an took a deep breath and came to a sudden stop, looking around.
John simply shrugged at Ko'ans words. He'd been keeping in his emotions ever sense he was twenty, why stop now? He almost ran into Ko'an, when he suddenly stopped looking around. " What's wrong?" John looked around also, trying to see if anything looked out of the ordinary or not right. When he saw nothing he simply shrugged, and continued to walk. He didn't want to hang back with Ko'an, mostly because people were starting to stare, and John didn't feel comfortable when stared at. John thought back to what Ko'an said about his age, and name. Wait? John stopped for a second. How did he know his name before even being told it? He dismissed it quickly, continuing his way down the sidewalk. It was probably just a Time Lord thing, maybe he accidentally read his mind or something.
Ko'an looked around from where he stood, taking faint notice of John accidentally bumping into him or of the people that were starting to stare at him. He sensed that there was something wrong. Not in this immediate area but close by. This was his chance to show John just what sort of dangers that there are just in this city, not just in the rest of the Universe. The Time Lord looked to John and grabbed his shoulder, "No.. we are going in a different direction. Someone needs my help." And he started walking in a different direction, taking John with him.
He stopped at a corner and looked down in the alley, "This way." He said as Ko'an climbed to the top of the fence and offered to help John up, "Sorry I'm sensing that there is a woman who has a Cyberman in her closet. It's not activated yet but I need to go and take care of it before it wakes up." He helped John over before hopping down and started walking again.
