Although Sebastian was still in the habit of questioning Nina’s odd demands, it very seldom benefited him to resist. There were a few times he didn’t dare even question her — and that was when she shouted in that tone of voice, or when he felt her go icy-hot, which was a very bizarre dichotomy that leaves scars on his back. When she did both simultaneously, Sebastian nearly tripped over himself to comply with her request at breakneck speed. “So,” he said under his breath, “are you gonna tell me why we’re following her?”
I think I know her.
“Oh! Is she like, a djinn?” he asked curiously, casually picking up an apple like he had any real interest in them, but he had to seem not suspicious while staring at the woman from across the store. “Is this your djinn senses tingling?”
No, she’s human, Nina answered dismissively.
Sebastian dropped the apple, casually slipping his hands inside his pockets as he made to follow the woman as she began walking again. He hoped that he came off as ‘innocent child’ and less the ‘creepy predatory half-demon’ that he felt like. “Okay, so— the thing is, Nina, I don’t know my way around this city, and I’d kind of like to know why you dragged us out of our hotel room, because if mum finds out—”
She won’t do anything, Nina scoffed derisively, because she won’t even notice your absence unless you miss your concert. She must have sensed Sebastian’s hurt feelings, because she immediately followed up with: I’ll take care of you, Seb. I just have to figure out how I know her.
“I was the first human you met, right?”
You were the first creature outside the Jinn I met, not just human, Nina confirmed. And the only one to show me a kindness. I’m sorry if my comment about your moth—
Sebastian shook his head quickly, grinning nervously as someone near him gave him a look for having such an animated conversation with himself. “Yeah, it’s whatever. I was just saying then it couldn’t be from before you knew me. And I definitely don’t know her, so it’s not anyone we met. You sure she’s human?”
Jinn care share memories. Maybe it’s not me who knows her.
“Like a hive mind? That’s… kind of cool, actually—”
Get closer.
“Can I… can I pass?”
GET CLOSER.
Sebastian sprang into action to avoid another nasty burn, and as casually as he could manage, walked up to the woman. He kept his eyes studiously trained on everywhere but where she was. Obviously that would lower suspicions. He stood next to her, awkwardly looking down at a piece of fruit in his hands. “Is this close enough?” he mumbled. To his mounting horror, he felt Nina’s dissatisfaction and confusion course through him, and she fought for control of his whole body. And, though he didn’t like surrendering complete control, it was a lot easier to accept it than to have another seizure in the middle of a store.
“I think you know one of my parental units,” Nina said, matter-of-factly. “But why would they associate with you? You’re a human. Are you not?”
Going to the shops was a little safe haven for Lucy. The majority of Britain - Londoners especially - were content to forget most of the unearthly events that happened in their isle and everything associated with them. UNIT slipping retcon into the water certainly helped, although that hadn't been done for Lucy's benefit. No, her country forgot her just fine all on their own. She'd witnessed that in Broadfell. Certain members of the family estate had longer memories than average, but Lucy had held her ground. She could go shopping alone if she wished to do so.
Lucy almost always wished to do so. It gave her time to meditate, to be intentionally alone rather than protectively isolated. She didn't seem to be the only one using this as an escape, judging by the furtive expression the young boy with the apples had. Lucy hadn't really heeded being followed, but she did notice the worry and see the mumbling movements of unperceived speech.
She also noticed the personality shift shortly thereafter, although that would have been near impossible to miss.
“But why would they associate with you? You’re a human. Are you not?”
"That question use to surprise me," Lucy spoke slowly, blinking once as she processed everything the young one had said. "You aren't Harry's, are you?" Because she'd have to kill her husband again if so.
“I’m glad it doesn’t shock you now,” Nina said. “It’d be very boring having to explain what I meant.” And Nina didn’t like boring things, but she didn’t say that because she’d had enough human interaction with Sebastian to know that they often resented being called boring. And if her parental unit — if her father — knew that she had caused this human any sort of resentment, that would drastically lower her chances of being accepted. Probably, maybe not, but Nina thought it wise to err on the side of polite.
Her head tilted curiously, not unlike a inquiring dog. “I don’t know a Harry. Or, I don’t think I do. I think my father is the Head of the Council. There’s some debate about that, except maybe the Head is more like my mother— again, some debate. I’m a djinn.” It was a lot easier to just say it like this, and not ‘my parents banished me from our dimension before I had finished my training and now I’m stuck inside this human’. That was a lot of words. “My name is Nina.”
“It’d be very boring having to explain what I meant.”
Her body language might not have fully reflected it, but Lucy was amused. She was glad as well, as it made her feel a tiny less dim. Lucy definitely embraced every opportunity to salvage some dignity in that regard.
"I imagine so," Lucy offered understandingly, waiting for the child to answer her question before saying any more. The fact the child didn't know the name Harry meant little given his normal inclination for a title. Her blank expression evaporated the second the boy - being? - stated they were a djinn. Lucy tucked basket out of the way, then immediately discard thoughts of murder for a giddy excitement. This was Iblis' child? Clearly she wasn't keeping up well with them, although time travel did make connecting in the right order with one's best friends difficult.
The woman might not be the most affectionate of people, but she had (and did) long for a child. So it was really little surprise that she hugged the being now introducing themselves as Nina. It wasn't a terribly long hug, just a fiercely happy embrace, a good portion of which actually showed on her face.
"In that case, I'm more than happy to meet you, Nina."
All in all, Nina thought that she did an excellent job not displaying the level of panic she felt as the human went in to grapple at Sebastian. She made his body tense, unable to make any noise other than internal warning bell alerts. The tight suffocating grip the woman had them in was quickly relinquished and the expression on her face had a little too much emotion to ease Nina’s nerves. Do I kill her? Is this a threat?
“It was just a hug,” Sebastian muttered, dropping his gaze to look anywhere but the woman’s face. It wasn’t often that adults smiled at him like that, and it especially wasn’t often that they got hugged. Which, Sebastian supposed, was kind of obvious since Nina had been nervous about getting slammed to the ground. “Hugs are fine, they’re nice,” he clarified, as Nina’s confusion didn’t cease. “And so are smiles.”
And now this was awkward, because Nina was lurking in a defiant refusal to come out of hiding. Sebastian moved anxiously from foot to foot before deciding to wrap his arms around the lady for another hug, because if Sebastian — who wasn’t quite afraid of everything, but he was nervous about most thing — thought they were fine, then surely Nina would come out. Why are you hugging her? Nina questioned. Of course his plan wouldn’t work. Ask her name.
Sebastian let go of her quickly, sticking his hands in his pockets. “How come you can’t get it out of the hive mind memory?”
It’s not a hive mind memory. I think, probably. Just ask.
“Um— it’s… sorry, it’s nice to meet you, yeah.” Good. Solid effort. “She wants to, uh, to know your name.”
Lucy's expression didn't blank out again, but she did mildly concerned at seeing Nina talk to themselves. Apparently having an argument or a discussion of some sort about hugs, in a different tone than the one that had introduced themselves to her. Deciding that patience was the best move (when wasn't it?).
When Nina dropped her arms from the hug, Lucy dropped her weight from the balls of her feet back to resting on her heels.
The child in front of her was incredibly shy now. It was a shame that hugging clearly made them uncomfortable, because Lucy wanted to brighten that expression.
“Um— it’s… sorry, it’s nice to meet you, yeah.” Good. Solid effort. “She wants to, uh, to know your name.”
"There's two of you then?" Lucy asked curiously, marveling over the fact there were apparently two children in one body. Nina and... perhaps the boy himself? "You can call me Lucy."
“Yeah,” Sebastian said, relieved at her tone. Curiosity was far better than irritation. His smile became more genuine and less ‘please kill me for I crave death’ — there were very few people that readily accepted two people living in their body as a feasible option for their erratic behavior. “It’s nice to meet you, Lucy. I’m Sebastian. Nina gets a little shy when people touch us, so she backed off,” he explained.
I’m not SHY, Nina argued vehemently, although she didn’t make any moves to control his body and fight for her honor herself. I just thought she was trying to fight me.
“So you’re used to Jinn? This isn’t weird for you?” Sebastian asked, bouncing on the heels of his feet. “That’s so cool — normally it’s really —” he made a vague gesture towards his head “—like, inside my head? Because I don’t want to weird people out. How do you know the Jinn? Do you have one?”
"It's good to meet you both, Sebastian. Nina." Lucy told them earnestly. "I won't touch you without asking in the future." Which was an easy promise to make. She'd been demonstrably affectionate with Harry, but he had always been an exception for her.
Her eyes glinted slightly at his question. She'd past 'weird' a long, long time ago. So Lucy shook her head slightly in a no.
"A Vetala selected me to be of use for some reason. Because of that. I met one of my best friends." Lucy's nose scrunched up slightly, almost offended on behalf of all jinn at the idea of her 'having' one. She did understand why Sebastian had asked, of course, but it was still such a bizarre idea. "Oh no. If anything, they have me."
“Thanks,” Sebastian said, although he felt guilty — he’d enjoyed the hug, even if Nina hadn’t. Now he’d have to ask for affection, and he’d probably just rather die instead. “We won’t touch you without asking either,” he promised, although Nina rattled irritably at being included. “We. Won’t,” he repeated, under his breath as he crossed his arms across his chest. Nina still didn’t seem happy about it, but she stopped screaming at him for the time being.
Sebastian tilted his head curiously. “What’s a Vetala?”
Don’t ask me!
“You’re a djinn, you should know—”
I DON’T KNOW!
He straightened rather quickly as she sent a shock of electricity up his spine. He decided not to bring up that she’d known this woman through some sort of hive mind, and really it wasn’t his fault for assuming she’d have the basic knowledge of her species through the same hive mind. That would get him in trouble, so he decided to just let it rest. At the scrunch of her nose, Sebastian took a step back, mildly raising his hands — leave it to him to get in trouble with Nina and Lucy. But Lucy didn’t sound angry when she spoke next, so Sebastian relaxed himself. His lips slowly curled into a grin at her words — they have me — because boy, could he relate to that.
“… yeah, I know how that feels. So, Nina’s—” what she’d say? Parental unit? Dad that might’ve been a mother? Did they only need one parent? “—parents are your friends? What did they choose you to be of use for?”
Lucy gave the pair another gentle smile. She wasn't particularly concerned about Sebastian or Nina touching her, but she appreciated the gesture in the spirit it was meant.
The blonde watched the two talk to themselves with mild concern. She waited until one of them addressed her directly.
"The vetales have an interesting relationship with memory and time." Lucy wouldn't pretend to understand it fully. "Iblis called them his brothers."
She shrugged and straightened her spine, amusement glittering in her expression.
"The Head of the Council prefers discussions to learning from books. He wanted to know more about Time Lords."
Sebastian tried to keep the confusion from his face— he didn’t understand how memory and time had a connection, except maybe in the vague sense that time could affect memories. He never claimed that he was smart. The name ‘Iblîs’ didn’t ring any bells either, but Nina had seemed a little more energized by it. “Oh,” he said. “That’s interesting. So the Jinn all specialize in different things? Like honey bees?”
We’re more advanced than honey bees, salad brain.
He decided not to reply to that, because honey bees had a very unique specialization system that made a hive run very efficiently and they were kind of amazing, thanks very much Nina. Sebastian shifted as Lucy talked about preferring discussions to textbooks, and he wished that his tutors would let him just discuss things instead of studying. “Is that what you are? A Time Lord?”
No, she’s a HUMAN.
“What do you mean by that? She could still be one; could be elite watch specialists. It's not like they have to be not humans, we don't even know what they are, so you could be wrong or just mis—”
"I think," Lucy said slowly. "It's less a specialisation and more... they're born or come to be or whatever the correct term is, with different abilities? They can't choose to be a marid or an ifrit or a vetala. They just are what they are."
She really hoped she was remembering (and had understood!) that correctly, but Lucy was fairly sure of her words.
Reaching out a hand slowly to ruffle their hair, Lucy stopped before actually touching the child, waiting to see if they disapproved.
"I'm human enough. I simply married one and came to know another. It was a world changing experience for me."
