Already, the streets were lined in Christmas decorations. It didn't seem to matter to these people that the holiday was over a month away, lit snowflakes could be seen and wreaths had begun to appear on doorways.
It wasn't that Emilie found it sickening, precisely. It was simply that she did not quite feel connected to the holiday. There was a strange expectation that hung round it that Emilie wasn't sure how to touch.
Whatever it was though, it was making her restless.
Christmas, the time of freebies, and giving fruit cakes to those relatives you just don't care for. At least that was Shadow's take on it, and since the lovely little cashier behind the counter of his favorite coffee shop just gave him a free coffee. He was actually very happy, cold, but happy.
Sometimes he wondered why, and how humans came up with these funny little holidays. Easter he thought was, one of the strangest. Honestly, a bunny that hides little eggs filled with candy for children to find? That was a bit suspicious. Ah well, he might as well figure that out later.
Right now, he was bored, and his coffee was starting to cool down. To which he finished and tossed the cup into a nearby bin.
The Shadow, or rather Silas Craver, needed something to keep him busy. And his last companion, Krissy; sweet girl; decided she needed a break from him.
So here he was, wandering about in the cold, in dark tank-top, brown leather jacket, dark jeans, and a pair of good ol' fashion trainers. Not exactly winter weather clothing, but he really could care less.
As he brushed the wet cold snow flakes out of his spiky blond hair, he suddenly realized he was a bit lost.
Silas turned towards the sound of the voice. Noticing the young woman with a frozen beverage. A bit strange for winter, but not unusual.
"Just a bit turned around really." He replied with a shrug, as he stuck his thumbs into the front pockets of his jeans. "I'll probably figure it out, if I back track."
Turned around meant lost, that did not normally imply an inclination to freeze oneself intentionally. Then again, she was drinking a frapp, so Emilie supposed that she did not have much ground to stand on there.
"Where are you headed? Perhaps I can help." The young woman offered, before taking a sip of her frozen drink.
"No where in particular really. Just anywhere I can get a good adventure." He answered with a grin towards her. Something was off about this young lady, he really was starting to get curious. "How about you? Heading anywhere in particular?"
"Oh! Right, I'm Silas Carver." He offered his hand to hers, as a friendly gesture of course. "What should I call you?"
He gently brought the back of her hand to his lips and kissed her knuckles. Silas figured, if she was willing to help him find his way, he might as well have a bit of fun. That is, if she was willing to play the game.
An adventure? Ah, now there was a familiar tune. Growing up, every move was meant to be 'an adventure'. In some ways, it definitely had been. In others, well... Emilie hadn't quite mastered the art of 'settling in', and she was not entirely certain that she ever would.
Still. School wasn't forever. And when she was working she got along with her coworkers well enough to get by.
"Just to school to get a bit of studying in."
Emilie offered her hand in return, eyes widening slightly when he didn't shake her hand but instead kissed her knuckles, like a courtier from a century or so ago, or maybe he was just a charming sort of rogue.
Well, she'd already jumped in, all that was left to do was ride out what came and hope that he wasn't just a very peculiar thief.
"By my name, preferably." She smiled crookedly. "Emilie Gunnar."
"Just to school to get a bit of studying in." The young woman answered, her eyes widening as he kissed her knuckles. It was rather cute, if he thought about it.
"Oh! Right, I'm Silas Carver." He offered his hand to hers, as a friendly gesture of course. "What should I call you?"
"By my name, preferably." She smiled crookedly. "Emilie Gunnar."
He raised an eyebrow as he noticed the crooked smile. Soon getting one of his own. Oh, she was going to be very fun. He just knew it.
"Mind if I join you in your studies, miss Emilie Gunnar?" Silas asked, grinning away. Perhaps afterwards she might like to join him on his adventures. Then at least he wouldn't be so bored.
If Emilie had not already come to the conclusion that this was a strange sort of man, than his question would have prompted that realization. As things stood, it was really only a confirmation for her.
But after all, why not? She was alone for the holidays - no word whatsoever from her parents, typical - so there wasn't much else to do for entertainment. This Silas chap might be strange, but he hadn't shown signs of being unbalanced or dangerous yet.
Anyway, it was a free country.
So after a moment, Emilie nodded.
"Alright then, Mister Silas Carver. I doubt Professor Chesterton will mind. Our lecture is mostly a review session anyway."
A review for their final projects which Emilie had honestly already turned in. Studying today was more of an excuse to be out and about. If she was alone on campus, it was a lot less lonely than being alone in her flat.
She laughed a little before heading towards the entrance to the underground.
It only took a moment or two, before he got her answer. She nodded, which was a good sign.
"Alright then, Mister Silas Carver. I doubt Professor Chesterton will mind. Our lecture is mostly a review session anyway."
"Review huh? So that means a test is coming up, right?" He asked, simply out of pure curiosity. Earth's studies were strange, yet fascinating in the least. Even if their history books, were mostly wrong.
He was brought out of his thoughts as he heard her laugh. It was then that he realized he had zoned out as he followed her. The campus seemed pleasant enough, even if it was getting covered by snow.
"I just hope you're interested in science."
"Like it?" Silas started, grinning playfully at her. "My dear, I'm all for it."
Stepping ahead, he opened the door for her. Might as well be a complete gentleman. After all, she did allow him to accompany her to class.
"Final projects are due this week," Emilie answered. "Worth about a quarter of our grade. I've finished mine, but seeing as I've signed up for one of his lectures next semester as well, I figure it's best not to skip."
It was refreshing, Emilie decided after a few moments, to come across a stranger interested in science. Admittedly 'science' was an extremely large term and could be applied to all manner of things, everything in one form or another. Even so, there were plenty of people who heard the term 'science' and started making all sorts of negative comments - and not just the more fundamentalist of religious believers either.
So she led him to Cambridge and even to her classroom.
Stepping ahead, he opened the door for her. Might as well be a complete gentleman.
That wasn't necessary, but at the same time... "Very thoughtful of you, Mr. Carver."
She smiled briefly before heading inside and finding her seat.
"Review huh? So that means a test is coming up, right?" He asked, purely out of curiosity.
"Final Projects are due this week," Emilie replied. "Worth about a quart of our grade. I've finished mine, but seeing as I've signed up for one of his lectures next semester as well, I figure it's best not to skip."
"Probably best yeah." Silas agreed, smiling at her. He still wasn't sure what was so fascinating about this young lady. Though, he figured that he'd find out soon enough.
"I just hope you're interested in science."
"Like it?" He grinned playfully at her, as he replied to her comment. "My dear, I'm all for it."
He started a little ramble about the different fields of Scientology, asking her about her opinions, and what she thought about some of the theories the scientists in this century, created. All while following her to Cambridge University.
He found himself quietly admiring the eight-hundred-and-so-year-old structure. The building itself, reminded the Timelord of some grand Cathedral, or perhaps a large manor. At least from the outside. He could remember Good ol' Henry the 6th. Laying that first stone for King's College Chapel, down back in 1446. That year, wasn't all that exciting.. As far as he could actually remember.
Silas brought his attention back to Emilie, after all, she was letting him join in on her class. Quickly getting the door for her, trying to be a proper gentleman.
"Very thoughtful of you, Mr. Carver." She said with a quick smile, and heading inside to find her seat.
"You can call me Silas, " He explained, as he took a seat next to her. Luckily for him, he looked young enough to pass for a college student, otherwise, it might look have looked a little strange.
There were several points in the lecture that Silas found himself biting his tongue. He really didn't want to get kicked out, and he didn't think it was entirely wise to make Emilie regret allowing him to accompany her. As long he didn't get called on, then it should be all good. Right?
Frankly, Emilie's feelings around 'Scientology' went so far as 'I have heard of it before', but she listened to Silas' conversation all the same.
You can call me Silas
"Very thoughtful of you, Mr. Silas Carver," she winked.
The lecture itself went fairly well. It helped that she had a great respect for Doctor Chesterton. For once, she was not actually taking notes but if the slight smile the professor sent her way was anything to go by, Emilie figured she either could not have done too badly on the project or he didn't hold it against her.
As the lecture wound to a close, Emilie closed her notebook and waited for the class to file out.
To say that the Shadow was bored, would be an understatement. Now he never thought of himself to get bored during a lecture. But then again, that was before he regenerated a few times. Now it seemed like, to him anyway; that this version just didn't want to sit still for very long periods of time. And when the lecture had reached it end, it had pained him even more to keep himself from rushing out the very moment the man said 'Class dismissed.'
Silas looked over at Ms. Gunner. He wasn't quite sure what it was but she smelt like the time vortex, well... a very mild version of it. Like she travelled through it, so that meant a few different options. One, She was Timelord, and was trying to blend in. Two, she use to be a companion, and either left on her own accord.. Or was left behind. Either way, it was going to be exciting.
He left the room, and waiting outside the doors. Leaning against the wall as he mulled over the possibilities in his head. Also, how he was going to find out. Obviously he couldn't rush into the whole, 'Have you travelled in time and/or space before, Or do you usually smell of vortex radiation?'She could get the wrong idea about him, and then he'd have to come up with some awkward line to explain himself. Honestly, he really didn't want to deal with that.. Which left him trying to figure out how to steer a conversation into that direction.
He grinned as the idea suddenly came to him. Of course, why didn't he think of it sooner? He waited for her to come out of the classroom, before he asked (rather innocently, mind you.) "Have you ever thought of traveling?"
One interesting lecture later, and Emilie had followed Silas outside. The man seemed nice, even if he was a bit tense and hoppy.
"Have you ever thought of traveling?"
Laughing a little, Emilie shrugged off the question. "I grew up on the road, actually. It's really bizarre being in one town for longer than a month. So I guess you could say that, yes. What about you?"
