It had been about two weeks since she had regenerated, and met her current best friend, Finn. Who was kind enough to let Maria to stay in her apartment with her.
Her regeneration had been a rather messy one. She had fallen from a burning balloon known as the Hinderburg. Then had to quickly use a homemade Vortex Manipulator that her adopted daughter made.
Sadly, the Phantom's regen went a little awry when one of her hearts stopped. Along with her memory problems, and then just add the easy distractibility. The excited/energetic nature, and you get a lot of trouble in a tiny Asian package.
Anyway, Maria was having fun exploring the city. She figured she might actually leave something about herself. Or maybe... Okay... Where did she get to now?
While she was getting lost with the sights, and lost in her thoughts. She just so happen to actually get lost. And she didn't know her roommate's cell number. Or even the street the apartment was located on.
After about thirty more minutes of wandering about. Maria saw a rather official looking building. And the employees inside, some had on neat uniforms with all sorts of bobbles. While others, not many, were wearing suits you might see on some politicians. Seem like a good place to find out where she was.
And while normal people would walk inside, Maria decided to skip. Why? Because she felt like skipping. Though she made sure to stop skipping so she could thank the nice man in one of those bobble uniforms, for opening the door for her. Then proceeded to skip right up to the front desk.
"Good morning, actually good afternoon, I think." Maria started, placing a finger to her chin as she contemplated what the actually greeting was. Then she decided to shake it off and continue. "Right, I'm a bit... What this?"
She was referring to the little sliver round object with a flat bottom. It had a stem sticking out of the top, in the center of it. And when she touched the top of the little stem, it fell into the sliver object and made a bright ringing sound.
The look on her face could only be described as childish glee. Thus, she continued to press the fascinating little object several times. Well that is, before the secretary rudely took the fun little noise maker off the desk.
Maria didn't understand why the lady had to sound so grumpy when she told Maria it was called a bell. Perhaps she was tired.
"Did you come here to just press the bell, or did you need something?" The Secretary asked, still sounding a bit hostile.
"Need something?" Maria repeated in a rather innocent manner. Which only made the scary lady grumble under her breath.
Maria took it as she must have had a really bad day. "Oh! Right. I'm a bit lost."
The secretary, aka Chelsea, gave Maria the 'you must be kidding me' look, and had to study her for a moment. Seeing how the look on Maria's face wasn't going to change, Chelsea sighed.
"Let me get somebody to help you..." She told Maria, "Just stay here. I mean it. Stay." Then left the lost girl at the desk as she went to get one of the detectives to deal with Maria's problem.
Maria had only been waiting thirty seconds, and her curiosity got the better of her. She walked behind the desk, trying to find the sliver bell, but found several disorganized piles of papers. So she brought it upon herself to help the poor lady secretary out. By organizing her desk, of course.
Nate was in the middle of closing the file on an investigation with a contented sigh. The violent crimes always got the most effort out of him. His father had been a violent man. It was his father's actions that were indirectly responsible for the death of his little sister, Nadine. He was determined than anyone who's name came across his desk that was categorized as violent was given his full attention until the bastards were left to rot in a prison cell.
He stretched and closed his laptop, finally shutting down the case as 'closed'. While the families would never get their loved ones back, Nate felt confident that there would be some sense of comfort in knowing the man would never hurt anyone else. He looked wistfully at his watch and sighed, closing his eyes for a moment and reached for the cup of coffee, long since gone cold. He muttered a few unpleasantries under his breath and downed the bitter cold coffee and went to fetch himself another cup, heading out onto the main floor of the department and crossing over to the coffee machine.
OF COURSE, the coffee pot was empty and he had to brew himself another batch. He emptied the old grounds into the waste bin and scooped a fresh bit into the filter, filled it with water and set it to brew. That's when the ding of the bell at the secretary's counter caught his attention. He didn’t think much of it at first.. Until it dinged again... and again. He arched a brow to find a tiny Asian woman playing with the bell, seemingly mesmerized but the simple instrument and he tilted his head to the side in confusion.
He made his way over to hear a bit of the conversation but only heard the secretary instructing the woman not to move while she went to fetch someone. He watched the Asain woman make her way behind the desk and begin shuffling through the papers on the desk and Nate politely cleared his throat to get her attention. “I doubt she'll be to pleased that you're rearranging her paper work.. Why dont you come out from behind there”

Just as she had started organizing the secretaries papers and folders, she heard someone clear their throat. When she looked up, she saw a very tall man in a rather nice suit, and messy brown hair. Maria gave an innocent sort of smile, as he spoke.
“I doubt she'll be to pleased that you're rearranging her paper work.. Why don't you come out from behind there”
"I just thought I could help her out..." Maria admitted, as she quickly tapped the papers she had in her hands on the desk. Then neatly placed them where she found them, before moving out from behind the desk. "She seemed to be having such a bad day."
Now that she was back where she was told to wait, she looked up the tall man. A sudden look of amazement grew on her face, and she had the utmost urge to start searching for some sort of bean-stalk.
"Why are you so tall?" Maria asked as she held her hand way up above her head, and stood on her tiptoes. Before something else caught her eye. "What's that?"
Now she was referring to the small electrical device, that was now dripping some dark brown fluid with an intriguing odor. She tapped on the glass of the pot expecting something to happen.. Only to find out it was very hot, and now her finger hurt. She didn't cry, or call out, all she did was simply, place her now burnt finger tip into her mouth. All the while giving the tall man a confused look as to what just happened.
"I just thought I could help her out..." Maria admitted, and Nate shook his head with a slight chuckle "She seemed to be having such a bad day." Nate waved his hand slightly dismissing the little woman's concerns. “She's always in a bad mood. I wouldn't pay her too much attention.”
He noticed her looking up at him as if amazed and he arched a brow slightly, suddenly feeling a little self conscious about his staggering height. He found himself stooping a little even though he still towered over the poor woman.
"Why are you so tall?" She asked as she seemed to be trying to even out their height by standing on her toes. He chuckled a little and dryly replied “Genetics, Ma'am” He was about to ask her what she was in need of when something seemed to catch her attention.. "What's that?"
He blinked and followed her as she hurried over to the coffee brewer. Before he really had a chance to open his moth to answer her odd question, she was touching the blasted thing. He sighed and took her hand, pulling her finger out of her mouth. Sheesh, she was like a child. “That's why you don’t touch hot things.” He examined the finger for a moment and smiled “It's not too bad. It'll be tender but it wont blister” he said releasing her hand.
“She's always in a bad mood. I wouldn't pay her too much attention.” The man explained with a wave of his hand.
"Oh. Alright then." She seemed to accept that answer, before she stared up at him.
"Why are you so tall?" Maria asked as she held her hand way up above her head, and stood on her tiptoes.
He chuckled a little and dryly replied “Genetics, Ma'am”
She nodded, smiling up at him. "Genetics are strange little codes. Don't you think?" It was then that something caught her eye. "What's that?"
It was a coffee brewer, and although it didn't look like it was hot. Maria soon found out just how hot it really was, when she tapped the glass with her finger. Almost immediately pulling her finger back and putting it in her mouth. Until the tall man in the suit, sighed and pulled her finger out of her mouth, looking it over.
“That's why you don’t touch hot things.”He examined the finger for a moment and smiled.
Maria pouted slightly before replying. "I didn't know it was hot."
“It's not too bad. It'll be tender but it wont blister”he said releasing her hand.
She looked at her finger, not entirely sure why but she wanted to touch it. And that's what she did. Only to immediately regret it.
“Now.. How can I help you?”
"Oh!" She suddenly exclaimed, smiling happily, as she just remembered why she was here. "Right! I'm here cause I need help."
Maria grinned and fidgeted around, waiting a bit before she continued. "I'm lost."
She nodded, smiling up at him. "Genetics are strange little codes. Don't you think?" she replied when he answered the inquiry of his height. He shrugged, never really having paid it much mind before. He followed the easily distracted woman over to the coffee brewer. He shook his head when she burnt her finger touching the scalding hot carafe.
“That's why you don’t touch hot things.” Maria pouted slightly before replying. "I didn't know it was hot." He arched a brow at her. How could she not know it was hot? There was a little label on the pot that clearly said 'Hot Contents' and it was steaming. But he decided to brush aside her absentminded nature when he told her that her finger should be fine. “Now.. How can I help you?”
"Oh!" She suddenly exclaimed, smiling happily, and Nate arched a brow.. again.. It seemed he was going to be doing that a lot with this woman.. "Right! I'm here cause I need help." Maria grinned and fidgeted around, waiting a bit before she continued. "I'm lost." Nate nodded to her and then asked “Alright. Let's see if we can help you get your bearings. Where do you live”
Maria smiled as he nodded at her. “Alright. Let's see if we can help you get your bearings. Where do you live?”
"I don't know, 'Jack'." Maria replied, sounding rather cheerful, despite being hopelessly lost. "That's kind of why I'm here. Because I'm lost. So I'm here to get.. Un... Lost."
Sadly, Maria was lost in many ways. Some more than others, and even though she had visited Earth several times in the past. She really had no idea of it's customs, or even how to act to pass as a normal human. As she found out a couple days ago, normal human beings, don't hold conversations with wild animals.
"I don't know, 'Jack'." Maria replied, sounding rather cheerful, despite being hopelessly lost. "That's kind of why I'm here. Because I'm lost. So I'm here to get.. Un... Lost."
Nate arched a brow at her and found himself sighing, rubbing his forehead. Only three scenarios came to mind. She was an idiot, she had a head injury, or she wasn't from around here.. The last two options seemed the most likely. He noted that she seemed more childlike rather than idiotic.
"My name is Detective Nathaniel Cross.. It's.. uh... Not Jack" and he motioned his arm to usher her to his office "Okay.. So, we'll start with the basics" he blandly remarked as he pulled out a chair for her.. He rattled off a few questions for her.
"What's your name?"
"Where are you from?"
"... I mean... where are you staying?"
"... You're not giving me much to work with here."
"Do you have someone you're staying with?"
"Does this roommate have a name?"
"Finn What?"
"A color?...... *sigh* Okay.. White? Blue?, Grey? Green?"
"Do you have a phone number we can reach her at?"
After the barrage o questions with inconclusive answers, Nate put his head on the desk.. He was really needing that cup of coffee now.
"My name is Detective Nathaniel Cross.. It's.. uh... Not Jack" He corrected, as he lead her to his office.
"Nathaniel Cross? I know that name." Maria thought out loud, before shrugging it off and skipping into the Detective's office. Smiling brightly at him as he pulled out a chair for her. She gave a small curtsy to be polite, before actually sitting in the chair. "Okay.. So, we'll start with the basics." Maria nodded, eager to find her way. "'Kay, ask away." She smiled at him, ready to answer any question he was going to throw at her.
"What's your name?"
"Maria Johnson." That one was easy. Or at least she thought it was. After all, who would forget their own name, right?
"Where are you from?"
That question confused her. After all he could be meaning the place she was born. Or rather loomed. In which case, would be a completely different place all together. Planet actually. "What do you mean?" She asked, "I've been from lots of places."
"... I mean... where are you staying?"
"Oh! I'm staying at an apartment..." She paused to bit her bottom lip, before giving him a sheepish grin. "Only... I don't know the address."
"... You're not giving me much to work with here."
"I'm sorry. I'm trying my best." Maria pouted, she really was trying her hardest to remember. It was just that her mind refused to hold in certain information.
"Do you have someone you're staying with?"
At that question, she smiled widely and nodded. "Yes! Yes. I'm staying with my best friend, my roommate."
"Does this roommate have a name?"
"Oh yes, her name is Finn." She rather liked these questions, much easier then the ones about where she was from and all that.
"Finn what?" Oh, that stumped her.
"Ummmmm..." Maria started, trying desperately to recall her best friend's last name. "I think it's like a color?"
"A color?......" Detective Cross sighed, though Maria wasn't sure why. Perhaps he was holding his breath without realizing it, and then had to let out the carbon dioxide really quickly? Well, that was just a guess. "Okay.. White?"
Maria shook her head as if to say, that didn't sound right.
"Blue?"
Another shake of her head. That didn't sound right either... Finn Blue? Nope. That wasn't right at all.
"Grey?"
Her eyes went towards the lower right, as if she was trying to remember. It was close, there was that ~Gra~ sort of sound to Finn's last name.
"Green?"
Her eyes went back up to him, as she smiled widely in recognition. She nodded happily. This guy was amazing! He figured out her best friend's last name in four guesses. Sadly, she had conveniently forgot that she; herself; had told him, that Finn's last name was a color, only seconds earlier. "Green! That's it. Finn Green! You're good. You got her last name in four guesses! That's like incredible!" Maria stared at him in more fascinated awe, almost like he was someone from a story. Only she didn't know which story book yet.
"Do you have a phone number we can reach her at?"
"Phone number?" she asked, her voice teetering between confused and intrigued. She had only just started to try and figure out what he meant by phone number, when she heard his head hit his desk. The sound made her jump, and look at him with concern. She stood up, moving closer to the desk. Maria tilted her head and rested it on the desk to look at him. Thinking this must be what normal people did. "Detective Cross? Are you alright? Hey, what's that?"
She was now getting distracted by a long silvery oval shape like object. Picking it up, and messing with it, she realized it had a cap! "Ooo." Maria smiled in a sort of child like wonderment, as she tried to look through the cap. Placing it on her finger, and wiggling the ligament made her very amused. Anyone else looking at the same object, knowing that it was the cap to the pen that she placed back on the desk. Mainly because the cap was more interesting, and she had no idea what the other bit did. Yet. She was trying to see if she could lift the cap off her finger if she blew into it. Only finding that was more than a bit difficult.
Tossing it up in the air, she was trying to see if she could catch it. Her eyes followed as it went up in the air, then back down, her hands ready to catch the sliver cap, when... She closed her hands a little too soon. The cap bounced off her hands and onto the floor. "Whoops." She immediately went on her hands and knees, searching for the cap. "I got it. Maybe... Oh! Found it!" Maria held up the pen cap, another big smile on her face as she used the desk to stand up. Before she sat back in her seat, starting to play with the cap all over again.

The ex-soldier collapsed onto the bed next to the woman, who gently pulled the blanket further up the two of them for warmth before cuddling up to William, "Well that was interesting.."
William looked at her, panting hard, "Yes it was.. Uh.. that was brilliant."Soon the two were asleep.
_____________________________________
William woke up and stretched his arms as he yawned, for once he had a good night sleep with no nightmares about Afghanistan. Feeling something was not right he looked at the window to see that it was brighter outside then usual then looked at the clock, "Oh bugger! Nate is going to kill me this time!" William jumped out of bed, "I thought my alarm was set!" He said as he rushed into the tiny bathroom to get cleaned up, quickly shaving some stubble away, and brushing his teeth. When he was done cleaning his teeth the ex soldier fixed his hair up then rushed over to the closet and got out some clothes and quickly got changed.
William's Fiance walked into the room and laughed as she watched William run around, "Sorry love.. I thought you could use the extra sleep after last night."
William stopped and looked at her, giving her a grin, "You turned my alarm off?" He asked as he wrapped his arms around her in a hug, his fiance nodded, "Well thank you love.." He said before kissing her and pulled away, "I will be back for dinner.." He said as he picked up his shoes, sat down on the bed and slipped them on.
When he stood up he gave her another kiss before charging out the door and ran towards the precinct. Charging through the doors he ran into his and Nate's office, "Sorry I'm late.. Accidentally slept in." William panted as he hung his coat up on his seat and sat down.
He suddenly noticed the woman, well there have been no murder cases that have been brought to them.. now it is mostly missing or lost persons cases, he cleared his throat and started up his computer, "Would you like some help Nate?" William asked, he knew Nate was giving him a certain look.

Nate hit his head against the desk as the woman managed to answer each of his questions without actually answering them. He lifted his eyes just enough to watch the tiny Asian woman spazz over one of his silver pens.
"Uh, Yeah, could you not?" as she went to toss and play with it.
"Whoops!!"
She ducked under the desk to fetch the pen she dropped and Nate promptly placed his head against the desk again with a groan. How could this morning possibly get any more frustrating?
"OH! I found it!"
Nate's temper was slowly teetering as she snatched the pen from her. Dealing with people was not his forte. While he felt a certain amount of tolerance towards her, today was simply not his morning.
"Right.. It's a pen.. not a toy." setting it on his desk.
"Would you like some help Nate?"
Nate looked up at his partner with a relived sigh. "You got some amazing timing, Will. Miss Johnson has lost her way.. see what other information you can get from her.. I'm going to run 'Finn Green' through our records and see if we can get a number.. and gets some coffee."

Maria jumped as the light sliver object was taken from her hands. "Right.." The Detective started, and judging by the tone of his voice., he wasn't very pleased. So the conclusion, Maria got to was, that she had done something wrong. "It's a pen.. not a toy." He explained as he set the pen back on his desk.
She looked down at her lap, and started to fiddle with her hands.. Much like a child might do when being scolded. She hadn't meant to annoy him, was that the right word. Yes, that sounded right.. Anyway, she really didn't intend to irritate the man, after all he was trying to help her. She just didn't know, she didn't remember, everything was all new, and shiny, and exciting. "I'm sorry, I didn't know.." Maria apologized, now rubbing an old scar in the middle of her right hand. "I..." Her hand went up to touch the back of her head, as if that might help something.
"I just.." Then she heard someone else enter the room, and she looked up. She observed the man carefully, not sure what to make of him.
"Would you like some help Nate?" Oh! He was here to help too? Well, wasn't that nice. Maria gave a somewhat shy smile at the new detective, as he took a seat by what Maria assumed to be his desk.
"You got some amazing timing, Will. Miss Johnson,"
"Mrs.. actually.. Well I think so anyway." She said indicating to a ring on her left hand. ".. Maybe it's miss.. I'm not really sure anymore."
"Has lost her way.. See what other information you can get from her.. I'm going to run 'Finn Green' through our records and see if we can get a number.. and gets some coffee."
What was coffee, and what did that do? She wondered to herself, ever so tempted to ask it out loud. However, she told herself to refrain, and try to get back to Finn. Oh dear, what if she worried her again... Maria put her feet up onto her seat, now sitting in the criss-cross fashion. "So, Detective Will, wotcha got for me?" She asked eagerly, wanting to know the questions he might have her. She rather enjoyed that bit, and it was all going to help. Right?
Will grinned widely, "I always have perfect timing Nate.." He picked a dart up and tossed it at the dart board, although all it did was bounce right back off, "Aww, ah well." He moved into his seat properly before looking to Maria, Will had no idea that she was in fact a Time Lady, but then he didn't know that aliens existed. Getting his computer up and running he got a pad and paper out, "Alright.. Mrs. Johnson, if you could. Could you describe to me where you lived, and where you have been since yesterday?" He asked as the detective reached for a pen.
"Mrs.. actually.. Well I think so anyway." Will looked to the ring that was on her left hand, instantly noticing that she was married. ".. Maybe it's miss.. I'm not really sure anymore."
"..see what other information you can get from her.. I'm going to run 'Finn Green' through our records and see if we can get a number.. and gets some coffee."
Will looked to Nate, "Sounds good. Sorry about not bringing you coffee, the shop was closed for maintenance work and training." He then looked to Maria, gesturing to the ring, "Could you describe me your husband? Or whoever your partner is?" An eyebrow was raised as he looked to his telephone as it rang, "One moment..."
Picking the phone up he remained silent for a moment, as he rubbed at his leg a little, "Hello?" He listened for a moment, "Uh.. nope." He then hung it up and looked back to Maria as Will cleared his throat, "Sorry about that." He winced a little, and rubbed at his leg again, "You were saying?" The detective tilted his head some as he listened to the woman as she spoke, unlike Nate, he had an disposable amount of patience.
Nate weaved his way from the office and came to break room and poured himself a cup of coffee and a cup for Will.. He knew her name. The blond time lord that had been with Rio the day the pod crashed and that Xenomorph had gotten loose. After he distinctly remembered telling them to leave the pod alone. The way she fumbled with her hands when she was nervous or agitated. It hadn't changed. That had to be the same Maria Johnson. Newly regenerated and with an apparent case of amnesia. Oh, well he was going to do his very best to jog her memory because she had answers to some questions that had been plaguing him for quite some time.
He took a slow sip of the coffee and headed into the records database and left a name with one of the techs. “Finn Green.. Let me know the instant something comes up.” And he made his way back out of the office. He set the cup down in front of will and causally leaned against his desk as he watched the two of them. “Maria.. I have an idea. What's going on seems to be an acute case of amnesia. If you like, I can get a portfolio together. It'll be filled with random photos, names or places. Something might trigger a memory. While we're trying to get in touch with Miss Green, it couldn't hurt to try, yes?” he said with a calm and somewhat gentle tone, like he was speaking to a frightened child.
