It was a bright and cheerful Tuesday afternoon. There wasn't a cloud in the sky and people were moving through the streets heading to or coming from their lunch breaks. This was not the way the world looked to Alex Campbell. The sky was a mournful gray, pouring rain and there were a mass of monsters moving through the streets hunting for him. He was huddled into an alleyway, trying to keep out of sight until they gave up their hunt for him, his knife at the ready to defend himself. His heart was pounding frantically in his chest as he watched from his hiding spot waiting for the droves of hunters to die down so he could make his escape back to the safety of his apartment.
He didn't have to wait long. The crowd died down to a lulled stupor of people simply wandering aimlessly. He held his breath for a moment before darting from the cover of the alleyway through the pouring rain that wasn't actually there. He shoved his way through the small group of people. He had to get away from there before the monsters came back for him. As he rounded the corner, his vision flickered from dark to light like a strobe effect. He paused, clenching his head tightly as his eyes squeezed shut. He was breathing heavily through his nose as he tried to focus. The realities in his mind were fighting for dominance, and Alex was caught in the middle of the struggle.
Within moments, his throbbing head eased to only a dull ache and his eyes opened warily.. Bright sunshine, ordinary people coming and going. “Am I.. Is this.. A dream?” he choked a sob as he stumbled back against the side of a building to watch people pass by. This couldn't be real, this wasn't where he was before. He clenched the knife tightly in his hand. He couldn't trust anything he say.. It had to be a trick. A woman placing a concerned hand on his shoulder snapped him out of his thoughts and he panicked, shoving her away from him and holding his knife protectively out in front of him. “You can't trick me. You're not real!”

Should she stop and get some take away for Susan and her? Ace reached up and scratched the side of her head puffed up her cheeks a little blowing out air in an exasperated way not really sure what to do. Susan and she had been hanging quite a bit since the whole bit with the “gremlins” and shoes.
She finally decided on some simple Chinese food for three incase Marisol was there. Chewing on a fortune cookie as she headed out of the little take away shop and started heading towards the apartment.
Something out of the corner of her eye caught her attention looking over she saw him, a young kid, well young to her anyway, he was holding a knife tightly and that worried her. Slowly she moved over to him and placed a hand on his shoulder saying softly “Hey kid, you ok?”
“You can't trick me. You're not real!” Ace held up her hands up slowly making sure to not make any sudden moves, she could of taken the knife away from him if she had wanted to but under the circumstances, there was something off about him and Ace didn’t want to exasperate the situation by causing him to hurt himself or someone else. “Easy there sunshine, no one’s gonna hurt you.”
"I am NOT A PROBLEM! I’m a…tactical consideration!"
Susan was bored. It was a terrible fact – one that was terrible because she so very rarely was. And it wasn’t quite boredom that was festering in the young human’s heart, as much as it was restlessness. It had gotten to the point that Marisol was even growing antsy because of Susan’s incessant pacing. She had painted countless pieces, she had rearranged all of the furniture in all of the rooms to better thwart a gnome invasion, and she had even alphabetized all of Marisol’s books. Not to mention she gave Aixa a makeover that consisted of bright blue eye-shadow and red lipstick.
Still, that didn’t solve anything. There was something that she had to be missing – she just had to be forgetting to do something. She pouted, throwing herself on the couch miserably. What was it, though? She had made a to-do list and she had done it twice-over. She pulled a couch pillow over her face, screaming into it childishly. There was something making her heart race, something making her squirm and writhe. She was supposed to be doing something, she was certain now, and it was important. She curled up with the pillow hugged tightly against her chest. “What am I supposed to do?” she whined.
She rolled off the couch with a loud thump, slowly picking herself up. A walk! A walk always helped. She grabbed her music and twirled out of the door, her favorite soundtrack beating down the boredom. Susan didn’t know what she was looking for, and she didn’t really care anymore. Anything to help get rid of the feeling inside of her would work for her – her heart was speeding erratically, her head was a trifle dizzy, and she was certain that her legs weren’t normally this shaky.
It was a familiar face that made her pause, a devious smile appearing on her thin lips. “Ace of Spades!” she chirped quietly, sneakily following her. She poked her head into the alley and grinned between Ace and the boy. “Hi!” she said cheerfully. “Who are you?” she asked, plopping down next to him merrily, the tension totally lost on her.
Alex looked up at her with dark green eyes as he slowly felt the strength in his legs leave him. He leaned heavily against the alley wall and slowly slid down unto a crumpled heap on the ground. Even with the knife still tightly held in his fist, he held his hands tightly against his temples, trying to drown out the pounding that felt like an oncoming headache. With his legs kicking slightly, he pushed away from the woman with the strange eyes and pressed himself against the wall, all the more.
“Please.. I.. I dont know where I am. I don't know how I'm here.. The Daleks..” His voice trailed off as he choked back a sob. “I.. I shouldn't be.. I'm.. I'm..” He should have been dead. He was sane enough to realize that. So... How? And why? “It doesn't matter anymore.” he answered himself aloud, still clutching his head, the knife clattering to the ground. He let go to tightly clutch his knees to his chest, resting his forehead to his knees.
“Hi! Who are you?”
“Alex” his voice cracked. “Alex Campbell..” and he slowly looked over at the woman who had slid down beside him, before looking up at the strange woman. His shoulders suddenly trembled with a sob as he threw his arms around the cheerful woman beside him. He couldn't comprehend why. But she felt familiar to him and she suddenly felt like the only thing anchoring him to this reality. He clutched against the woman, burying his face against her collarbone.

“Please.. I.. I dont know where I am. I don't know how I'm here.. The Daleks..” Ace stopped cold at the mention of The Daleks “I.. I shouldn't be.. I'm.. I'm..” something about this kid she knew though she knew in her gut she’d never met him a day in her lives “What did you say your name was again.” she started took a step forward.
“Hi” Ace jumped when Susan poked her head between then “Susan!” she didn’t really yell it but there definitely was some volume to her voice.
“Who are you?” reaching under her jacket Ace gripped the blaster she’d come accustomed to wearing under her jacket over the years. She wouldn’t use it on the boy even if she had to, it was just in case he decided to pick up the knife he had dropped again and use it on Susan.
“Alex” his voice cracked. “Alex Campbell..” Ace twitched slightly at the name. Couldn’t be Susan and The Doctor had both said he was dead the time they used the fob watch on Susan so she wouldn’t for lack of a better word self-destruct. Softly “Can't be.”
"I am NOT A PROBLEM! I’m a…tactical consideration!"
Susan looked up at the woman who said her name loudly. “Hello,” she chirped brightly, still sitting next to the boy as if they were old friends. “How are you?” she asked. She watched with a slightly tilted head and confused expression as Ace grabbed something under her jacket. Had she done something wrong? Was she and the sad boy supposed to be alone? As he introduced himself, Susan beamed. “Well, I’m Susan Eng—” her introduction got cut off as the boy threw his arms around her and enveloped her into a tight hug.
She patted his back, looking up at Ace with a confused expression. Normally she would pull away from hugs, especially from strangers, but her arms coiled around him and held him protectively against her. Ace twitched as the name and whispered to herself. Susan rubbed his back soothingly, patting at him as he sobbed against her. “Shh, Alex,” she whispered, kissing his temple worriedly. “It’s going to be all right. I promise it will.” Dr. Smith would probably help him! Dr. Smith helped her out a lot, after all. So he had to be able to help him.
“Why are you so sad, Alex?” she asked, petting him and running her fingers through his hair. She looked up at Ace and smiled sadly.
He whimpered and seemed to tighten every muscle in his body as she patted his back. His eyes squeezed shut as his head pressed into the side of her neck before he finally let go of a shuddered sigh and looked up at the woman who had called herself Susan and then to the woman that Susan had called Ace. “Susan.. That's a good name. My mother was Susan.” his voice trailed off as he felt his heart sink.
He eventually sat back away from her and leaned heavily against the wall, still clutching his head as if the pressure would ease away the oncoming headache. It didn't seem to change anything. If nothing else, the dull throb only seemed to worsen and he opened those pale green eyes to stare down at his feet before looking back at the two women. “You should hurry. It'll be dark soon.. The creatures will be back.” he replied softly. It was mid afternoon and not a cloud in the sky, but Alex was convinced the darkness was coming.

Ace shrugged not really sure what to do when Susan looked at her confused as Alex hugged her. “Shh, Alex,” she whispered, kissing his temple worriedly. “It’s going to be all right. I promise it will.” Ace looked over to the side not sure if she should curse The Doctor for some reason or to go along with it “Why are you so sad, Alex?” Ace could take a guess but she had to be sure. Sneaking a glimpse at Alex proper Ace could see it he was a paradox like Susan. She saw the small sad smile Susan and just like every other time, her hearts melted, softly to herself “Fine.”
“You should hurry. It'll be dark soon.. The creatures will be back.” Ace moved over and hunched down in front of Alex “Can't have you two getting hurt because of me.” Ace looked sideways at Susan for a second before offering her hand to Alex “Come with us. Don’t worry, we’ll keep you safe.”
"I am NOT A PROBLEM! I’m a…tactical consideration!"
Susan hugged him tighter as he tensed. She wasn’t sure how to deal with this boy’s pain, but she knew that she wanted to. “Thank you,” she said, rubbing his back comfortingly as he commented on her name. She didn’t know how to be a mother, either, but she felt protective of the boy – the child, despite his appearance. “It’s going to be okay,” she repeated, kissing his temple again. “Don’t be afraid. I won’t let anything hurt you.” Not goblins, not monsters, and not gremlins.
As he pulled away to lean against the wall, Susan immediately followed, curling into his side. “I’ll stay here,” she said softly. “You won’t have to fight the creatures alone. I have to fight them all the time, so I think I can help,” Susan said, brushing her hand along his hair. She slowly moved her hands down to his and held them in her hands. “Come with us, please,” she said, echoing Ace softly. She stood up slowly, still holding Alex’s hands firm in her grasp.
“Ace and I can make sure nothing bad happens. Believe me.”
His headache seemed to lessen with the woman's grip on his hand. Those soft green eyes opened to look at her. He knew her. He had to of. There was an overwhelming urge to just cling to her like a trembling child. But he refrained, with a great deal of difficulty, mind you, but he refrained. Instead, is only reply was “Can't.” It was one of the few moments when Alex was completely clear headed. Confused and afraid because he wasn't sure where he was or how he'd gotten there, but his mind was his own. However, he didn't pull away from her. His fingers reached to trace into the woman's hair, feeling the texture between his thumb and first two fingers.
“I'm dangerous. I.. I can't explain it but.. You should go.. Please.” his hand rested against her face, almost as though he was suddenly the on protecting her and looked up at the woman still standing over them. “I don't think a doctor can help me. I.. just need to stay away from people.” He suddenly let go of Susan and was clutching the sides of his head. “They're coming. You have to get out of here! Cant you hear them coming?? Mother! Lucie!! GO!” he nearly screamed as he pushed to his feet and tried to push past Ace. His death suddenly replaying in his head.

“They're coming. You have to get out of here! Can’t you hear them coming?? Mother! Lucie!! GO!” Now, if what happened next had happened when she was younger she wouldn’t have been fast enough to grab at Alex as he tried to push past her. Reaching out she grabbed his forearm, not in a forceful sort of way but definitely a get your attention kind of way, “Alex,” she had to make him listen and as much as she hated to do it she felt this may be the only way to do it.
“Alex, Alex Campbell right?” she was mentally kicking herself as she said it glancing from Susan back to Alex and kept her grip on his arm “I, I may be able to give you some answers about your mother, not all but some.” she stepped a little closer to Alex making sure her eyes stayed locked on his “Please, just let us help you. No one, will hurt you. You have my word in this life and for the rest.”
"I am NOT A PROBLEM! I’m a…tactical consideration!"
“Of course a doctor can help you,” Susan insisted, putting her hands over his as he held her face. “I used to have demons following me, and all sorts of things, but Doctor Smith gave me things to help,” she told him matter-of-factly. Her expression clouded in confusion as he let go of her and started to scream, trying to run by Ace. Susan got to her feet, drifting over to the pair worriedly. “Hey…”
Ace seemed to be worried about her almost as much as the kid, which Susan thought was quite odd. As the woman looked over at her after addressing the boy, Susan smiled and offered a thumbs up. “Do you know his mother? We have to take him to her!” she said. Then she took off the necklace her doctor had given her and slipped it around Alex’s neck. “Here! It helps me feel better, maybe it will help you.”
When the younger woman reached for him with the strange clockwork pendant, he struggled. He shook his arms trying to wrangle free from the other woman's grasp and he nearly spat at them in anger and fear, like a wounded animal, afraid but still full of pride.
“NO!” he shrieked, trying to move his head away but as the chain slipped around his neck, there was almost an immediate calming effect and thoes pale green eyes went cloudy. Almost as if he was suddenly very tired and he leaned heavily against Ace and looked rather pathetically at Susan. “I feel like... I've had too much to drink” he said with a soft chuckle.
Ace held onto Alex as he shook his arms trying to get free “Alex, Alex stop calm down everything’s gonna be fine.” she refused to let him go she understood that he was scared and if he was anything like his mother that would make him dangerous.
When Susan placed the necklace around Alex’s neck Ace thought for a second that he was going to pass out as he leaned against her “Easy there kid.” “I feel like... I've had too much to drink” she laughed a little “It’s ok sport, I know those feels. Come on let’s get you somewhere…” she paused for a moment not really sure the right word to use “…safe. Susan, would you mind.” she nodded her head as if asking Susan to lead the way.
