This officially sucked. David Callahan had never really thought about exploring Antarctica. She had never wanted to go. She had never felt a strong desire to explore the great white wilderness. The uninhabited land. The unmarred… snowy… place. And yet, that was where she was. Most certainly not Fiji, which was very unfortunate. It was cold, she wasn’t dressed for this sort of weather. At all. And her poor Djinn…
Poor Twitch. Marids were made of water and she was terribly frightened that he was simply going to freeze and die. His melodramatic moaning and insisting that she go on without him wasn’t helping her paranoid state of mind. “Are you still alive?” she asked for quite possibly the thousandth time, giving his snake body a firm shake for possibly the two thousandth time. She sighed, looking around them. “So… I guess the odds of someone coming around to rescue us are pretty low…”
This.. was not how this little adventure was supposed to go. This was supposed to be Fiji. Warm, beautiful sunshine-y Fiji surrounded by crystal clear waters as far as the eye could see with beautiful white sands and.. and.. well.. Not this.. This sucked for a number or reasons. Firstly, Twitch very rarely made mistakes when heading to locations, so this was just a bit embarrassing. Secondly, these freezing temperatures were not safe for his mistress. She could get sick and die. Twitch would never forgive himself.. And thirdly, and this was the most distressing for the marid.. His core was made of water. He was quite literally freezing. And because of how cold he was, he couldn't concentrate to use his abilities. All he could do was slither into his serpent form and coiled into David's shirt in a desperate attempt to keep himself and her warm.
“S-s-s-sorry.. Charlie.. I.. I messed up, huh?” he chattered, trying to keep his tone light to keep her from worrying more than she already was. He felt like a horrible jinn. He couldn't even concentrate his energy to give his mistress a proper coat to help warm her. The muscles in his serpentine body squeezed and rolled, coiling his body around her torso, trying to aid in keeping her as warm as he was capable. “Y.. yeah.. pretty low.. we... might have to.. dig a shelter.. in the snow.“
Winter trudged through the snow, wrapping her jackets closer to her body. She was aiming for Scotland, not the coldest place in the world. Luckily for her, she had prepared herself just in case something like this happened, again. She had brought six or seven jackets with her, and was wearing them all now, but she still felt like she was freezing from the inside out.
She scanned the frozen surface, for the hundredth time, in search of anyone that might be able to get her out of here. Her gaze stopped on a woman trudging along in front of her. Winter quickly ran up to her, or at least tried to. "Ex--cuse me. You wouldn't by Ch-chance know a way out, w-would you?" She looked more closely at the person in front of her, and noticed that she didn't have a jacket on. Winter took off three of her layers and put them on the stranger. "Y--You looked cold." Winter managed a frozen smile.
“You didn’t mess up,” David said, fighting to keep her voice even and free of the stutter the cold was trying to give her. “Antarctica can be f-fun. We can chase penguins around.” She rubbed her hands together quickly to warm them up as much as she could. She put her hands in her shirt and rubbed Twitch’s cold body. “Don’t worry, Twitch. I won’t let you freeze,” she said, shivering violently. No one was meant to be out in Antarctica in a shirt and some pants, but nonetheless that’s precisely what David was dressed in. Wonderful.
Still, she couldn’t blame Twitch. Wouldn’t blame him. “A snow shelter… all right,” she said, getting on her hands and knees, beginning to shovel at the snow in her hands. She sucked in air between her teeth, wincing as the cold burned her hands. She didn’t whimper or anything, determined not to let Twitch know how much it hurt. After a while her hands had gone numb which made it easier somewhat. Once she’d made a considerable sized hole, she settled into it, putting her hands between her thighs and squeezing them together to get feeling back into her hands to work on the walls and ceiling.
“T-This is why I should have been an Alaskan…”
She pushed the jacket back into the woman’s hand and shook her head. “N-no, you look colder. And I d-don’t know a way out…”
If a snake could scowl, Twitch would have. He tightened his body, the sides of his body rubbing against hers as he coiled even tighter. It was a meager attempt to create friction, doing what to keep both of them warm, but he knew if he tightened much more, he was going to start bruising her. Even though she was reassuring him that it wasn't his fault, he was well over three billion years old. He should have been paying attention. If anything happened to Charlie, he'd never forgive himself.
He felt so guilty as the young human started digging into the snow to make a shelter. That should have been him with his hands in the ice, doing what he could to protect his mistress. Another voice caught his attention. He didn't pay attention to what was said, only that there was someone else's voice. Twitch immediately went into a protective mode, leaving the warmth of Charlie's shirt and with a burst of the last energy he could muster, that icy white cobra was replaced with a very grumpy looking Polar Bear roaring in the other woman's face.
As he stood there, he could feel himself warming up. Oh why hadn't he thought of that sooner? Change into an animal suited to this kind of environment?? Now he really felt like an ass. The massive white bear stood between Charlie and the other Marid... wait.. Another Marid??? He gave a low groan of confusion as he stared at her, rolling his shoulders and bouncing his upper half upward before slamming his massive paws into the snow and tilted his head to the side. He looked back over his shoulder at his mistress, ears folded back with big round blue eyes, a bears equivalent of 'The Puppy Eyes'.
Winter frowned slightly as she took the jacket back. She knew that the human must be close to hypothermia in her clothing, but she didn't want to be over bearing. But at the same time, she didn't want the human to freeze to death. She ignored her protests, and slid the jacket over her anyway. She could protest all she wanted, Winter knew that she needed some sort of protection against this cold. And while the flimsy jacket wasn't much, it would give her some sort of warmth, at least for a little while.
Winter scrambled back in surprise, and terror as the giant polar bear appeared in front of her. She scrambled back helplessly in the snow, her remaining jacket slipping below her shoulders. If Winter had a heart, she was sure it would be pounding in her throat. She quickly glanced at the human shivering slightly from a mixture of fear and coldness, then brought her attention back to the Marid looming over her... Wait a minuet. Marid??? What was another Marid doing out here?
She jumped slightly, letting out a hiccup of surprise when he slammed his front paws into the snow. She wasn't really afraid of him anymore, now that she knew what he was. But she was still a little intimidated, and just as confused as he was. Winter glanced back at the human again, her mouth gaping open slightly, then looked back at the other Marid with wide confused brown eyes.
She blinked and practically missed it. In what seemed less than a second, Twitch had transformed from a snake into a bear and was roaring at the woman. David put a hand on his leg to calm him, not quite realizing he was grunting out of confusion and not threatening the poor ‘human’. She tugged the jacket the woman had given her closer, going back to her meager attempt at a snow shelter. “T-Twitch,” she admonished, her voice cracking.
As the bear looked back at her, she finally stood up, leaning against him. “It’s okay,” she insisted, burying her face against the warmth of his fur for a few seconds, just until she could recognize the pain of the wind against it. Pain was better than numb, she knew that from survival shows. And also a song, she was pretty sure. She finally moved her head to stare at the ‘human’, who was staring from David to Twitch.
“… Win’er?” David asked, taking a shaky step forwards. “Know you. Run the bookstore. Off First.” She moved between his paws and nestled into him, not quite unlike a small penguin to its father. “I know ’er, Twitch. S’okay.”
Twitch stared between the two of them for a moment. David's recognition of her was somewhat comforting. He uttered a low rumble before he awkwardly cleared his throat and spoke. “Get over here before you freeze solid.” he rumbled as his massive paw reached, splaying his claws and curled his massive arm around the other Marid. Pulling her against his massive chest he used his paw to rub her back for a moment before turning to the hole David had started and went to dig into it.
He was feeling a right proper arse for not thinking of changing his form earlier. His mistress probably had the beginning signs of hypothermia, thanks to him. If she so much as got a sniffle after this he'd never forgive himself. He didn't have enough energy to focus his abilities to make a magical shelter appear or offer them more clothing. He, himself, was still trying to warm up.
Massive paws dug in deep and flung out a flurry of snow like a dog digging to bury a bone. He used his massive body to rub along the sides, packing in the snow and trying to push it up to make a sort of roof before he grumpily curled into a ball in the center of their shelter and poked his nose out the entrance. “Alright.. come on. As soon as I warm up a little I'll see if I can create a fire.” He doubted it tho. Fire was not his forte. Although he once caught a match on fire by staring at it intently.... with a spy glass... using sunshine..
One of the rare few instances where Twitch found himself either wishing he were an ifrit or that his brother would just happen to come along and.... No.. He didn't think he could bear the indignity of having to be saved by his brother... again.
