He swore to himself that he would not be one of those Renegades that would run. He would be the refined, gentleman rebel, using wit and charm. Turns out wit and charm are very ineffective against a Ragork . They just charged at you, intent on rendering your flesh from your body. Not an ideal world.
The Inspector had managed to clamber up a tall tree and now the blasted beast was asleep at the bottom of it. Every time he moved the thing woke and started to growl and gnash at him. How on earth did he end up here?
Well that was the easy to explain. he was brought down by an EGMP. An Electro Gravamatirx Pulse. A space EMP effectively. He was in a bar on the outskirts of the Scorpion Nebula when he heard stories of a planet that had claimed over 30 ships in the past Cycle. This was curious for the simple fact that not only was the planet in a remote part of the sector but there was rumors of seeing a white light before the crash. The Inspector took it upon him self to investigate.
However he was unprepared for how strong the EGMP actually was and unfortunately got the coordinates a tad off, so he materialized in space... and in range of the blasted thing. The type 43 was pulled down to the planet. if it wasn't for the safety nets the inspector would have died a rather horrible death.
The down side was that the console had taken a massive beating, and he had spent almost 2 weeks fixing her up with parts from the crashed ships and the materials he could find. He was certain he could find the EGMP, disable it and solve this little mystery. But every time he got more than a mile away from the TARDIS he was set up on by the creatures of the forest. It was a difficult situation. Made harder by the fact the EGMP also affected most tech on the planet. not even his Super Smart Phone worked well. All he could do was map the area.
So now the Inspector was stuck up a tree being attacked by an overgrown house cat. What was a time lord to do?
Not everything was ominous, Jenny was sure. Sometimes a series of strange events was just.. well, a series of very strange events (like the annual jelly-balloon fight on Orvid 3, that was one of the strangest things she'd seen yet, and there was nothing particularly doom-ful about that! Unless you were a strawberry.) The problem was, she mused as she flipped a few switches, tucked into the cockpit of her ship, was that you couldn't even trust the news for accurate information!
In this case, the mention of 'a salvage vessel vanishes near Pargia', was barely third-page worthy.
"You know, if I didn't know better, I'd guess that we weren't supposed to go check this out!" Jenny commented aloud, grinning in her lopsided way as her ship hummed. A friendly noise that was just a little out of key with the rest of the usual operational sounds. "Ships vanish all the time! Wrong turns, a week late, you know.. But this is a whole fleet that's gone missing in the last few months! Nope, it's definitely something we need to check out."
The trouble started earlier than she had expected. Even with the long range scanners keyed to finding whatever signal was causing all this trouble, it wasn't long before her controls started going haywaire. "Hey-whoa!" She exclaimed, as the illuminated panels in front of her suddenly flickered brightly, and plunged into darkness. "C'mon, c'mon, c'mon! Wake up!" Small hands drummed against the console, as the lush, deep greens of the planet's surface came rushing up to meet her.
It wasn't, she had to admit, her smoothest landing.
With a bump, and a crunch, and the sound of creaking foliage, Jenny extracted herself carefully from the progressively-more battered shape of her little vessel. "Alright, alright, so I wasn't expecting that!" Gingerly, she rubbed the back of her head, rolling her shoulders to try and ease the soreness from being tossed about on entry. "Well, no serious injuries, that's good! I'll be back in a little bit, going to see what's around here."
The planet was, she realized very quickly, quite strikingly beautiful. Covered thickly in every shade of green imaginable, with vine-covered jungle trees that stretched up towards the skies, and trailed long, feathery fronds of liana to the moist carpet of grass and moss below. Unfortunately, it also made travelling a bit of a pain, with every straight line bisected by trees and bushes; Jenny tried to stick to the open areas, somehow, she had the unpleasant thought of walking under one of those trees, and having a great big, Jenny-eating snake fall on her.
She had just stepped gingerly around a large bush, covered in yellow flowers, oozing some sort of sticky nectar, when she heard a sound. It certainly wasn't human, this furious yowling. More like a cat, with hissing anger and decidedly feline screeching.
"What the..?" She trailed off, moving faster towards the noise, and retrieving the small blaster pistol from her ankle. It felt, as always, a little guilty in her hands. But it was a short-lived thought, as she caught sight of the beast around the trunk of a moss-covered tree. It was a powerful creature, all lean muscles and razor sharp teeth.
And a man, trapped halfway up a tree.
Blue eyes darted left, and right, taking in the terrain. Military tactics discarded; they weren't much good when you only had one person. And slowly, a cheeky smirk tugged at the corners of her mouth, as she mapped out the tiny clearing, bracketed on one side by a fallen tree. "That works."
Tucking the blaster into her ankle holster, Jenny darted forwards. Slender fingers wrapping securely around a low-sweeping branch, as she vaulted on the diagonal, legs swinging forwards for momentum. With a solid crunch, her boots connected with the tree trunk, the decaying wood shivering for an instant under the sudden weight.
"Alright, I think you've scared him enough! Shoo!" She chimed rogishly, grinning down at the lashing feline. With a fzzzt! she fired, beads of blue energy cracking in the air, before striking the moss near the cat's feet. Yowling, the cat bolted off into the underbrush, hackles raised and angry.
Hopping down from the fallen log, Jenny tilted her blonde head up to the stranger, raising a hand to shield her eyes against the slanting sun. "I don't think he's coming back for a while, why don't you come down?"
He wasn't helpless. In fact the tree he was on proved a very strong poison if the sap was ingested or introduced into the blood stream. However The Inspector had done enough killing, the very thought of it made his stomach churn. Plus the animal was pregnant(he could tell as this particular Ragork and he had become the Tom and Jerry of the Jungle) so he really couldn't do that.
But he was saved by a ball of blonde hair and laser fire. She then addressed him.
"I don't think he's coming back for a while, why don't you come down?"
The cheek of youth today.
The Inspector slowly climbed down and landed with a hard thud and a grunt. some twigs were stuck behind his ears.
"I am getting too old for this. Far. Too. Old. However I am grateful for the assistance- and that he is a she, called Mittens. Why didn't you kill her? A fully functioning blaster is a rare occurrence on Pargia, most would have killed the beast."
There was something about this girl. What was it his mother use to say? 'that glow of star light' that... aura all people of Gallifrey had. but her's was dim. like a shadow or an echo. She seemed off. The Inspector desired to focus on the current situation rather than the possibility of a time lady and pushed those thoughts to the back of his mind
"I'm sorry I should introduce myself. I'm the Inspector,I've been stranded here for 2 weeks and my ship..." He held out his very smart phone, and a 3D map of the area lifted up off the screen. there were 4 blips. one was green and yellow that were close together, the 2 others were brown and red.
"Seems closer than yours. WE should head there, since there shall undoubtedly be company on the way. So what's your name? I can't keep calling you Jane of the jungle in my head now can I?"
Waiting at the bottom of the tree, Jenny's gaze panned around the clearing closely, watching for any sign of their returning monster-kitten. It was oddly silent, all things considered-- though, she mused, she didn't really know enough about the planet to accurately judge what the volume of noise usually was.
She was a strange little creature, one hand loosely on her hip, the other casually holding the blaster, as she waited for the Inspector clamber his way down the odd looking tree. "Why?" Confirming that there was no pressing danger, no other monsters about to leap out of the underbrush, Jenny turned back to the man, the corners of her mouth darting up with irrepressable humour as she deftly flicked one of the leaves from his ear.
"I'm not that sort of person. It's not like she was a Thraxian warlord, just a kitty out searching for lunch. Not her fault that you weren't on the menu!" Even as she spoke, Jenny could feel the twitching sensation of something in the back of her mind, like an itch, an awareness of something she couldn't put her finger on.
Definitely not human, her instincts told her. But beyond that? She wasn't sure.
"That sounds like a good idea. My ship isn't really big enough for two people, anyway! And I'm not sure exactly what shape it's in at the moment, just that it could use some repairs. So what brings you to Pargia? Some sudden desire to get closer to the local fauna?" Cheekily, Jenny swept her free hand towards the jungle, motioning for him to lead on.
"And I'm Jenny. Nice t' meet you!"
