Physical Description: Martha Jones has tanned skin, and long black hair that she’s trying to grow even longer. It’s usually tied up in a bun or a ponytail, but she does leave it loose occasionally. Her eyes are a smooth light brown color and she stands at about 5`5 in height. She weighs 124 lbs. Clothing wise, Martha knows how to dress in a stylish way, and yet make it look casual. When it calls for it, she’ll dress to impress because she does like a party. She wears earrings and necklaces all the time, since jewelry is another thing she really likes. She has a nice enough figure, although it’s not exactly model-like. But then again, it could be worse.
Personality: Brave: Martha Jones has proven herself to be very brave when she needs to be, and she can keep calm even in very freaky situations for the most part. She’s also willing to sacrifice herself for the good of the human race. Very heroic, sure, but she doesn’t really think about it too much. She doesn’t think much of herself…at least, she didn’t at first, so that may have been the reason she wanted herself to be a sacrifice in order for people she loved and in general people around her to stay alive. Still, she can also be rather confident so that isn’t apparently the case. Hmm.
Insecure: While Martha traveled with the Doctor, she always considered herself second best, and sometimes those insecurities catch up with her even though Martha tries hard not to worry too much. She still doubts her abilities sometimes, and she either just needs to talk to someone about it, or just sit alone and think for a while. After that, her confidence returns and her insecurities are buried away…for a certain amount of time, anyway.
Curious: Martha can never help her curiosity, despite the fact that it can get her into trouble quite a lot. She tries hard to ignore her temptations to explore or talk to a particular someone who looks…different, but she can never seem to help herself because her curiosity overcomes her. This can sometimes agitate her family, but she doesn’t much care about that. Curiosity doesn’t hurt her…not all the time, anyway.
Loving: Despite the fact that Martha’s very good at holding a grudge, she’s a very loving person and she will do anything for those she cares about. Sometimes she gets told that she loves and trusts too easily, but that’s just part of her personality that she can’t seem to shake, so she makes no attempt to change it. Loving can also be a good trait, and it goes hand in hand with her protectiveness that she has over people, although that can also be seen as motherly.
Has a temper: Despite the fact that Martha is often a very sweet and kind woman, she has a temper and when it’s flared she can put up a very good argument. Often her temper makes her slightly sassy and snappy, even though she can be very apologetic afterwards. Having a temper is often the reason Martha is so good at holding grudges.
Sense of humour: Martha has a very good sense of humour and she really likes to laugh. While sometimes Martha takes situations a bit too seriously, she knows how to have a good laugh and she can enjoy it when there’s no danger; just fun. She isn’t the jokey type, but she does listen to conversations that other people have about jokes and she’ll crack the occasional one in an attempt to lighten the mood. She often does this, but she also knows when to take a situation seriously and comfort someone.
Intelligent: Despite the fact that Martha may act otherwise, she’s a very intelligent, logical and open-minded woman. She knows how to handle situations with care and she can think straight (for the most part) in even the most deadly situations. Her intelligence’s limit isn’t only in her job and in aliens, however. She’s intelligent in general, about life’s experiences as well as jobs and information and…well, school grades.
History: Martha Jones was born in London to Francine and Clive Jones. She has two siblings; Leo and Tish, and a niece called Keisha Jones. At some point in Martha’s childhood, Leo pushed her off a swing and caused her to break her arm. She jokingly held that against him as she grew up, of course. But she was more thankful to him than anything, as when she was being taken to the hospital in an ambulance and being bandaged up, she became fascinated instantly and that’s what influenced her want to be a doctor when she grew up. Martha grew up with her mother along with Tish and Leo, because her parents got divorced, and that probably influenced the way she saw the world, as opposed to if both her parents raised her, or if just her father raised her. Often during the family arguments, Martha was the one who played peacemaker, and even if she got tired of the constant fighting, she never once complained about it. Martha loved the Harry Potter book series and she still reads them even now, since she likes books more than she cares to mention, really. She had a cousin named Adeola, who worked for Canary Wharf, but her cousin died in the battle.
The day Martha’s life changed was a normal day heading to the hospital she was a trainee at. She still had her dream of wanting to become a doctor and she wasn’t about to give up on it. She was dealing with a family crisis on the phone, and had just put it down when a strange man came up to her and took his tie off before walking away. Dismissing it, she continued on her way to the hospital, not thinking anything more of it until she saw an identical man in a hospital bed. After having a rather awkward conversation with him and finding out that he didn’t remember seeing her at all (although she’d later discover he traveled back in time after their meeting), she listened for his heartbeat only to find out that he had two hearts, although she didn’t tell anybody this and she covered for him, mostly.
It was no more than an hour later that the hospital Martha was working in was taken to the moon. Martha kept calm in this situation, and it was then that she found out that the man posing as John Smith was actually The Doctor, an alien. A race called the Judoon, the first aliens Martha ever really handled, started searching the hospital for a Plasmavore, who drunk blood to disguise herself as human. The Doctor made the Plasmavore drink his blood so she could be identified as non-human, but after this the Judoon left, even though the scanner was set to explode. Martha brought the Doctor back with the last of the air, and he saved the hospital.
She later saw him again, after witnessing a big fight with her family, and after a lot of persuasion, she went with him to have ‘one trip, just to say thanks’. Except this one trip ended up being quite a few. Even when he attempted to take her home, he discovered there was a man named Lazarus who was going to make himself younger. He did, but then they discovered he’d turned himself into a monster, and so Martha and the Doctor had to try and stop him. This was when her family first found out about him, and even though they didn’t really trust him (well, at least, Francine didn’t) Martha refused to leave his side, showing the feelings that she’d started to develop for him. When they finally stopped Lazarus, the Doctor accepted Martha on board as a proper companion, and he gave her a key on their next trip, as well as giving her phone the ability to call anywhere and everywhere in the universe.
Their adventures went on, until finally one day they went to the end of the universe, where they met Captain Jack Harkness, who had clung to the outside of the TARDIS in order to go with them. When the Doctor and Jack started rejoicing that Rose was still alive, Martha felt rather bitter and a bit jealous, although she’d heard about Rose before. At the end of the universe they met the last humans at a base, awaiting for a man named Professor Yana to get the rocket working so they could escape the Futurekind. Professor Yana turned out to be a Time Lord named the Master, and when he opened a pocket watch identical to the one the Doctor had kept when he became human, he remembered who he was and he took the Doctor’s TARDIS and left Martha, Jack and the Doctor at the end of the Universe when the other humans had taken off to ‘Utopia’. However, using Jack’s Vortex Manipulator, they escaped, and found out that the Master was actually the prime minister Harold Saxon.
He took over the Earth with a species called the Toclafane and Martha had one simple instruction from the Doctor: “Use the countdown.” She spent a year walking the Earth and spreading the word about the Doctor, telling everyone to think of him at a specific time, but she pretended that she was looking for a weapon to destroy the Master. That’s what she told one particular professor, because Martha knew that way she’d get to the Master sooner. With the help of people thinking of the Doctor at the same time as the countdown, the Doctor was restored to his normal self and the Master was defeated. Not by the Doctor, however. By Lucy Saxon, once everything had reversed and the year that the Master had been in control of the world was erased, and only Martha, her family, the Doctor and anyone aboard the Valiant remembered what had happened. Lucy shot the Master and his body was burned.
Martha spent some time with her family, and then told the Doctor that she wanted to stay behind. It was then that she said (well, implied) her feelings for the Doctor, although she knew that they weren’t returned. It was at this point where Martha stopped, for the most part, thinking that she was second best. She missed the Doctor, of course, but leaving was her own choice and she didn’t regret it mostly. She gave him her phone so she could call him at any point.
For a brief time, Martha worked with Torchwood and replaced Owen when he was shot. However, she soon realized that it wasn’t the job she really wanted, and so she left when she was sure Owen was able to take over again. She started working for UNIT.
On the UNIT operation ‘Blue Sky’, she called the Doctor back to Earth because of a system named ATMOS, which turned out to be clone feed so a race called the Sontarans could make Earth into a clone world. But Donna, the Doctor and Martha managed to save the world. Donna told Martha she should go with them, but Martha said she belonged on Earth. However, the TARDIS malfunctioned, sending them to a place where the Doctor’s daughter was created. A machine took a tissue sample from him and then his daughter was created. In the battle between the Hath and the humans, Martha, the Doctor and Donna got separated, and she helped heal one of the Hath.
She eventually found the Doctor and Donna again, and she got to them by taking the surface route. After Jenny was shot, the Doctor took Martha home, and even though it was hard for her to leave again, she did. But she met the Doctor yet again when the Daleks moved the Earth to go with another 26 planets. It turned out their leader, Davros, wanted to destroy the entire universe, and with 27 planets he could do so. Martha met other companions on this adventure, and she (along with them) helped save the world once more. She was sure that it was one of the last times she’d see the Doctor, but it wasn’t.
When she married Mickey Smith and was dealing with a Sontaran, she looked around and the Doctor had knocked the Sontaran out for them. Mickey went to call for the Doctor, but Martha stopped him. Because she knew that it was definitely the last time she’d see him…at the very least, the last time she’d see him like that.
Martha has taken a break from UNIT and is now simply working as a doctor, which has been her dream for a very long time and so she’s very happy, even though often her mind wanders to the Doctor and she ponders on whether or not she’ll ever see him again. Perhaps, she thinks sometimes, one day she’ll track him down. Not to travel with him, though. He’s simply one of her best friends, and she’s curious about him.
Addition Medical Information: She has the general needs of a natural human, and she’s perfectly healthy.
RP Sample: Her eyes widened as she looked around her. This was a very big hospital and instantly she wondered how long it would take her to navigate this place. She smiled slightly; this was her dream job, and she was living it. She couldn’t quite believe it. ”Martha Jones?” the receptionist asked lazily. Martha nodded and turned to her, smiling politely. The receptionist rolled her eyes and pointed to the boss’ office. Martha thanked her and headed towards it. Grumpy cow, she thought to herself, but she was way too happy to say that out loud at the moment.
She knocked at the door of the boss’ office and she entered when she was told to do so. “Martha Jones, correct?” the boss asked, smiling at her pleasantly. “Please, take a seat.” He said, and she did so obediently, smiling back and thanking fate that there was at least someone who wasn’t grumpy around here. “Now, I read up a bit on your records. You worked with UNIT.” He said.
Martha nodded. ”I did, yes, and I might do again. Who knows? But for now I’m exploring my other options, which is being a doctor. It’s my dream job and I needed a break, so…” she grinned. ”Here I am.” she finished, rather lamely in her opinion, but the man seemed satisfied.
“Do you have all the necessary paperwork with you, Miss Jones?” he asked, leaning back in his chair. I want one of those big boss chairs…Martha, focus, this is your dream job at stake here! she scolded herself. She nodded again, feeling like a doll, and she pulled a big file of paperwork out of her bag. It was mainly her experience and such, that she’d been told she’d need, and a couple of things from the places she’d previously worked at. The boss barely looked at most of it, and he briefly read the stuff UNIT had put in before giving the paperwork back to her. “Here’s how it’s going to work, Miss Jones. We’ll put you on a trial schedule for a week, and if we feel you could be valuable to us, you’ve got the job. You’ll have to work hard next week, Jones, since that’s when your trial is.”
”Thank you, sir. I won’t let you down, I promise.” Martha said, and she got up, putting the paperwork away. He held out a schedule to her and she took it, scanning it briefly before putting that in her pocket too. “I hope not. Good day, Miss Jones, and good luck for next week.” He said, and he gave a little wave of the hand that told Martha she’d been dismissed.
She left the office and walked rather casually out of the hospital. Only when she was outside, and round at least two corners, did she do a mini victory dance. She blushed a bit when people stared at her, but she didn’t pay too much attention to them. ”Yes!” she said happily, and she got into her car. She put her handbag on the passenger seat, put the key in the ignition and turned it.
She hadn’t gotten the job yet, and she knew that full well. But with hard work, she’d have it, and she was going to work as hard as possible. Martha smiled to herself. Her dream life was barely even beginning, and she knew that she was going to enjoy it. Martha Jones continued to smile throughout the day, and just before she went to sleep, that one thought crossed her mind.
I wonder what dream life the Doctor is living right now… But, since she was too tired to imagine, she left herself wondering as she slowly drifted off into a happy and much-needed sleep.
