She put three fingers right over his heart for a moment, then took him by the arms, needing to steady them both.
"Luke, I don't know how he's come back, but he's made a mistake by going after the two of us. To hurt us, he'd need us to doubt. Do you understand, Luke? You don't need to hear me to know that I love you." Her grip tightened. "I need you to know it in your heart."
"I need you to know that if we get separated, I will come find you. I would never abandon you, Luke." Her hair tossed with the vehemence of her denial, and her eyes were fierce. It was the line of her lips that gave a quiver of soft agony for him.
"Luke, I don't know how he's come back, but he's made a mistake by going after the two of us. To hurt us, he'd need us to doubt. Do you understand, Luke? You don't need to hear me to know that I love you."
Luke clung to his mother. For the first time in his life he didn’t analyze the feelings he was feeling, he didn’t try to think up a reason for what it was. Instead he simply held on to the woman who had given him everything and now had given him a reason to keep fighting. “I know mom, I know you love me. I love you too.” He looked into her eyes then pecked her on the cheek before hugging her again. He wanted to show her he really did understand and loved her back.
"I need you to know it in your heart."
He tilted his head when she said the next bit. It confused him, he didn’t know how to know something in his heart. “Mum I can’t know something in my heart. My brain is what stores memories and instincts. My heart doesn’t store knowledge.” He didn’t know what else to say so he stopped talking.
"I need you to know that if we get separated, I will come find you. I would never abandon you, Luke."
He looked his mother in the eyes and nodded. He knew she was telling him the truth; she’d done much the same thing when they faced the Pied Piper. His mother was scary when she was angry, she was also the most loyal and loving woman he’d met. She saved his live more times than he’d saved hers probably. “I know you will mom, you always do. I’d do the same for you if we got separated.” He just hoped he never had to, but he knew eventually it would happen, their jobs were dangerous after all.
She captured his head in the raised crook of her elbow and pulled the side of his head to her kiss. It was hard not to squeeze his head too much, but sometimes it felt like if she could just hug him hard enough she might be able to pass on her love like a shield. She let him go, then patted a gentle hand to either side of his head, making sure she could get a moment to judge the look in his eyes.
Did he truly understand?
Was he afraid?
Should she do more than she did to protect him from all this? No. She could she his fierce commitment, a look she'd seen on him many a time before.
"Well, then we've got him beat in his tracks, Luke. Good boy!" She patted his knee. "Lets go see what Mr.Smith has to say about it."
She was calling out for her computer to start it's sequence before they'd even reached the top of the stairs.
"Well, then we've got him beat in his tracks, Luke. Good boy!"
Luke smiled lovingly at his mother. He loved her as he’d loved no one else. Her words gave him courage at the moment, though she’d never know how shaken up over the matter he really was. Not so much because of the Nightmare Man’s actions so much as the fact the Vishklar had set his sights on Luke’s mother this time as well. His eyes looked at his mother and he smiled at her some more but now his smile became one of happiness. “I won’t let him get you mum.” When she released him he stepped back to give her room to move while nodding to her his agreement.
"Lets go see what Mr.Smith has to say about it."… "Mr.Smith!? I need you!"
“He always has a good answer. Should we also ask K-9? After all he helped me last time too somehow. You never did tell me how K-9 got into my dream.” He looked at his mother curiously waiting for her answer. He followed her up the stairs as she called out for Mr. Smith. He called for K-9 to come. He hadn’t seen if his robot friend had left the car but he had a feeling the loyal dog had a way to if he hadn’t.
When he told her that he wouldn't let the Nightmare Man get her, she believed him. He was a young man of extraordinary abilities, and she did not doubt he could find a way. But at what price? Would his heart pay a price? Would his brand new body take damage? Would the Earth? She was determined not to let it come to that.
She couldn't see him hurt. Still, it was easier to leap into the fray knowing she was truly not alone. He fought for her, and she for him, as surely as she and the Doctor ever had. It made her strong enough to do things other people couldn't do.
She turned and put a hand on his shoulder, clamping down with her gratitude for a moment.
"Thanks Luke."
As they continued up, she stopped one more time to flash and impish grin back at him before they stepped into the attic.
"Oh, he's your dog now, Luke. You can oil his wheels and open the door for him. " she tilted her head and gave a curious expression. "Actually, I think I've missed him"
She didn't always. No matter how hard they tried, she and Luke had never figured out how to get K-9 to open his own door, and forever had she been bid to do it for him. Until she'd handed him to Luke. That is what had her smiling.
Luke smiled at his mother a tired smile but one never the less. He grinned at her and chuckled at her reminder of K-9 being his. This was the mother who cared for him, the mother who loved him. She was not something crafted by the Vishklar who wanted to hurt him. She was the mother who had saved him from the Bane and taught him how to be human.
He could never see her hurt and would fight to defend her from anything and everyone. She was his, he would not let her be taken away from him. “Well I’m sure he misses you too mum. He was eager to see you again though it took some bribing on my part to get him off campus.” He followed her up the stairs smiling and eager to see Mr. Smith again. The fanfare that drifted down the stairs was like being sent back in time to when the team was together. He could almost see Rani and Clyde with them as they traveled up the stairs again.
His eyes found their way back to his moms and he raced up the rest of the way going to see the giant computer and say hello. He looked at the other artificial intelligent being in the house, though this one was far from mobile, and grinned excitedly. “Hello Mr. Smith, I’m happy to see you again.” He felt the memories of the computer wash over him again it was just like old times.
"I'm pleased to see you again as well, Master Luke. Sarah Jane, I am reading a light residual Alien energy coming off of Master Luke."
"What?! Well, don't tease, Mr.Smith, tell me what you mean by that. Luke stand still"
He was quickly scanned.
"I'm also reading lowered levels of Leptin and Ghrelin from sleep deprivation. Sarah Jane, Luke's levels have fallen even farther than your own."
She tapped her front teeth with a pen, eyes locked on Luke like he was a puzzle to be solved.
"Mr.Smith, do you think you can protect Luke from the Nightmare Man if he slept inside the your force field?"
She wished she'd thought of that before, but the necessity hadn't come clear until she heard what was happening to her son. She knew there was only room for two if they were upright.
"Oh. Luke . . . " How could he still be so innocent sometimes. "You can move now."
Standing obediently still Luke waited until his mom told him he could move again and listened to the diagnosis that Mr. Smith had given. However a small frown touched his lips when it was revealed that his mother was also sleep deprived. How long had the Vishklar been going after his mother? Why hadn’t she called him before? When would the creature learn to leave his family alone? So many questions and even though he was tired his mind was working quick to find a solution. The only one he could come up with was to go get K-9 and bring him inside. With K-9 and Mr. Smith working together a solution was sure to present itself.
Turning he made his way silently to his car to get the metallic dog and bring him upstairs. The normally talkative teen was silent this entire time as all his focus was on finding a way to protect his mother, his family. “Come on K-9.” Picking up the robot he carried his friend upstairs. As soon as he set the dog down the robot went to Mr. Smith.
“Greetings Mistress and Mr. Smith I am here to help solve the problem of the Nightmare Man.” As the robotic dog spoke Luke made his way back over to his mom and tried to keep the worry from his gaze, but then he never was that good at hiding, or understanding, his emotions. “Mum we’ll get through this. We always do.”
They'd both gone quite serious. She felt in accord with him even as they each, no doubt, tried to put the puzzle pieces together that they had. The arrival of K-9 nearly brought tears to her eyes. Nearly. She kept a stiff upper lip, and a smile broke briefly on his face.
"Oohhh, K---9. Good afternoon." She got down next to him and gave his medallion a tink with her fingernail. She might have usually asked him if he was functioning well, but Luke might see it as her not trusting him to tend to the few things K-9 couldn't do for himself. However, she did have one subject to address. "Whats this with you not telling me you'd had information about an alien presence." Her eyes did then flash to Luke's with hard question as well. She poked the robot dog twice in the nose with a little impatience, then she nearly broke through the 4th wall with her quiet vehemence.
"This show is called "Sarah Jane" not "K-9"

K-9 blinked his lights a few times and bobbed his head in greeting for his mistress. He even wagged his tail a few times and rotated his “ears” in his excitement to see her once more. The accompanying mechanic sounds filling the familiar space that was her attic. Yes he was even happy to see his old not so rival, rival Mr. Smith.
Luke smiled happy the whole family was together in the attic once more. Of course he wished it was under better circumstances. But then he wondered what would life be like for them if indeed there wasn’t some alien to deal with? At least this was an alien they were familiar with and not some unknown species. Those particular battles were rarely ever fun in the end.
"Whats this with you not telling me you'd had information about an alien presence."
K-9 blinked his lighted eyes. “I recognized the symptoms when Master Luke retrieved me from the car. He shows signs of fatigue.” The robotic dog only looked on at her not effected by her flashing eyes since he could not feel real fear.
Luke on the other hand recognized that look and felt a bit like a student who had raised his hand at the wrong time in class. “I…knew about the Nightmare Man. I just didn’t want to ruin our lunch together mum. I didn’t want to scare you.” He shuffled his feet realizing this had been a bad thing to do. He shouldn’t have hid it from her, or K-9 for that matter. Gulping he felt that normal fear growing in his chest that she’d get mad at him for making a mistake, even though he knew she loved him too much to hate him.

"Good boy, K-9." she said, even though she was slightly irritated none the less.
She'd passed 60 a while ago. She didn't think about it much because she didn't feel what she thought 60 might supposed to feel like. As K-9 rolled in, she didn't think twice about crouching down on boot heels and haunches to greet her shortest companion. If it hadn't been for K-9 she never would have been able to let Luke out of her site. Her knees made not a single complaint as she folded up, then reached out to carefully straighten his collar. Had it been made out of threads from the Doctor's scarf? Perhaps. The idea pleased her.
Luke's words got her back on her feet. She looked at him hard for a moment. Was she loosing him? Was college life drawing him away from her already? She searched his eyes. No. He was just trying to grow up. She smiled warmly at him and caught a hand gently around to the nape of his neck.
"Luke, if we stopped living every time something dangerous came along . .we'd never get anything done. Some day it might be wise of you to learn how to keep a secret, but . . not from your Mum, alright?" Now she gripped softly over his shoulder with the cup of her hand and gave him a gentle shake "Alright? You may be tall, but you're not grown yet."
