Katharina Diederich was one of those people that was determined not to let anything get her down. Her life was fortunate – barring a few broken bones due to her Dulcian physiology, she’d never suffered any sort of accident. Her parents, though dying from old age, still loved each other and her. She had a wonderful husband and brilliant friends who worked with her. She’d had her share of struggles, but she danced her way through them as gracefully as she could.
She didn’t have much, but Rina figured that she had a lot more than some other people did. Her bakery was her pride – it’d started as a little business that was struggling, and it seemed to expand overnight. She’d eventually had to hire people to help with deliveries and baking. Her store hadn’t grown much – it was still just a two story shop, with the top floor where she and Léon lived. Thanks to his help, he’d helped the bakery have slightly different dimensions on the inside. It wasn’t much bigger on the inside, but it had given them more room to sit people down and fit a few more ovens inside the kitchen.
Despite her two friends and employees working as much as Rina would let them – she didn’t want her friends to overexert themselves, so Rina didn’t let them work as often as they volunteered – Rina was slowly coming to realize that three people (four, if you counted the occasional assistance of Léon when he wasn’t at his own job) couldn’t keep the bakery afloat. Well, they could, but she was struggling with it, not like she’d admit to them that maybe she needed them to work more hours. It was for this reason that there was a brightly decorated and happy sign declaring that Rina’s Ritz was hiring.
Rina set out the stand of free cupcakes, ranging from the normal to flavors to the kind that her bakery had created specifically. She often gave out free food to the hungry looking people, and she delivered both baked goods and ‘actual food’ to the shelters (both the human shelter she volunteered at and the more underground alien shelter she spent some time at). She pulled her hair back into a bun and tied her pink and white apron around herself cheerfully.
She looked up as she heard the bell chime, signaling a customer. “Good morning!” she chirped happily. “Free samples are over there, if you’d like to try before purchasing.”
It had been one of those days where everything built up inside her heart until finally even shy calm Sarah Jones couldn't hold it in anymore and it exploded in a very colorful display of Latin and English swear words, mixed in with various threats of exploding snacks and drinks. Today had started off with her getting up and her quiche burning, following that her flowers had all died again, after that she had been late to work because a flock of tourists had decided to stop her and ask directions to the London Eye of all places, when she had gotten to work her boss had yelled at her for being late for the first time since he hired her, finally a customer yelled at her then complained to her evil boss because she had not accepted an expired coupon. So when that same man with his curly mustache and balding head shiny with a new sheen of anger sweat snarled at her she snarled right back.
"You know what Gerald! I have worked here for four years and have never even toed the line! I have taken the reigns so you could have an extra break and visit your girlfriend in Cardiff! I even came in yesterday on my off day so your brother could go and drink with his friends!" She then took up an extreme amount of courage and took the nearby mic. "SO I SAY TO YOU GERALD! YOU AND YOUR CURLY MUSTACHE CAN GO DRINK SARDINE JUICE I QUIT!! GOOD DAY SIR! Oh and don't buy the chili it isn't fresh." She turned and after throwing her apron at him she stormed to the back room to change out of her uniform and grab her backpack. As she was exiting the building Gerald threw her a very immature gesture which she happily returned.
A half hours walk to the nearby park brought Sarah a nice calming location where she began to sketch like crazy on the sketchpad she had grabbed from her backpack. As the picture of an angry bear roaring over a small man who looked like her former boss came into being Sarah realized she needed a job. The soft homely smell of baked goods drew Sarah in, now calm she got up and followed her nose to a bakery. In the window she saw there was a job opening and she smiled and entered the bakery to the cheerful welcome of a woman's voice.
“Good morning!” she chirped happily. “Free samples are over there, if you’d like to try before purchasing.”
She shyly excepted the offered goods and took a small chocolate cupcake with what tasted to be a raspberry infused chocolate frosting on top and a small candied cherry crowning it. She smiled in appreciation of the delicacy and once she had finished it looked at the kind woman and shook her head. "Well actually I would like one of those chocolate cupcakes please. I also would like to know if you are still hiring. I have...recently re-entered the job searching population and would like to apply here." She smiled softly. "If you'd like I could make you a sample of my cooking." She smiled softly and waited for the woman to answer her.

Rina smiled and went behind the counter, continuing to set up for the day. Her friends weren’t supposed to come in until much later. “Okay,” she said, moving slightly more into the kitchen to duplicate the cupcake. “It’s one of our specials,” she said, looking over at the woman as she slid the cupcake towards her. “It’s your first time here, though, so you have it half off.” Rina tapped her temple with another smile. “I don’t forget a face.” She put the cupcake in a small pink box tied with a white bow. “That’s £1.05,” she said, pushing the box across the counter to her.
At her question, Rina’s face brightened. “Oh! Yes, we’re still hiring. I just put that sign out this morning, actually,” she answered. “Of course!” she said, stepping back and gesturing towards the kitchen. “Help yourself to anything in there. There’s a stool if you can’t reach. I know I can’t,” she giggled. She was very short – just under five feet. She was often found climbing on counters and stacking stools on top of one another to get things that her husband had accidentally put out of her reach.
“My name’s Katharina Diederich. Call me Rina,” the Dulcian smiled.
Sarah smiled softly and paid the price. "You didn't have to give me a discount." She blushed and pulled the box toward herself. She then listened to the woman and nodded her head. She already ran through her famous tarts but decided against them and settled on her favorite cake instead, double chocolate. She settled at a table and began to munch through her cupcake as she ran down through the recipe. She stopped at the part where her secret ingredient is and looked a bit mischievous. She wondered if the woman carried it but if not she'd make an exception this one time. Licking the last of the frosting from her fingers she stood up and walked to the loo, she washed her hands of the sticky residue the frosting had left behind and dried her slightly stinging red hands as she walked to the kitchen.
After doing a once over of the kitchen and noting where everything was she breathed in a soft sigh of the lovely scent of homeliness the place had. Not at all the unwelcoming stench of her old job. She shook her head and with the recipe firmly in place began to mix the dry ingredients together with expert ease and practice. She then grabbed the wet ingredients and mixed them as well it was at the point where the milk had to go in that she stopped. Instead of milk she poured in condensed milk and added crushed dried mint to the mixture. She smiled at the scent then grabbed a chili pepper and smirked softly. She was silently happy she had done some shopping and finished the batter dumping it in a tin and setting the timer. After the required time to cook she grabbed the cook and while it is cooling makes a chocolate cream cheese frosting from scratch. She then spread the thick brown icing on top and tops it with a circle of cherries. She then carries the cake out and sets it next to the woman. "Here you go, I hope you don't mind sweet and spicy."
Rina smiled. “I know I didn’t have to, but I wanted to,” she said. As the woman went to go sit down and eat the cupcake, Rina continued to set up the store. The free displays were out, and she’d gotten the other displays out in the glass counter. She wiped down the counter again to keep the glass clean and healthy before going back into the kitchen to sweep once more. She was very methodical about her cleaning, though it was to be expected as this was more than a bakery – it was her home.
As the woman passed her in the kitchen, the small Dulcian scampered out of her way to continue cleaning and putting things away. Léon was still asleep upstairs, though she wasn’t sure how long he would stay that way. He had a nose for chocolate, and she’d been cooking with it all morning. Just as she was done fixing up the store to make it look a little nicer for customers, the woman came out with the cake. Rina smiled and cut a small slice, putting it on a plate and taking a bite. After swallowing, Rina beamed up at the woman. “This is delicious! My husband would adore it. Do you mind if I save a slice for him, Miss…?”
“This is delicious! My husband would adore it. Do you mind if I save a slice for him, Miss…?”
Sarah blushed at the woman’s compliments. She had to fight the instinct to wave them away in an effort to not have attention on her. “Of course I don’t mind. And it’s Miss. Sarah Jones.” She smiled softly and had to resist shuffling her feet as if she was still a school girl having just given her report to a tough teacher. “I’m glad you like it. It’s my own special recipe.” Sarah looked at her and asked in an only slightly shaky tone “Is that all you require? Or is there a paper application you need me to fill out as well?” The thought of having to fill out an application in front of the woman scared her a bit. Her hands were shaking a bit and she didn’t want the woman to see how scared she really was.
“Well hello, Miss Sarah Jones! It’s a pleasure to meet you,” Rina said with a smile. “And I do quite like it – it’s a very good special recipe. Thank you for letting me share it with my husband. He adores chocolate, you understand. I’m very surprised he hasn’t woken up yet to the smell of it,” she laughed. She glanced down to the woman’s trembling hands but then looked back up to her eyes, looking a little confused. Why was the woman acting so scared around her?
“Oh – that’s all,” Rina said. Well, there would have to be a little paperwork later, but they could always handle that later. She stood up and walked over to the sign in the window and put it down, looking back over her shoulder. “If you want the job, you’ve certainly got it, Miss Jones.”
Sarah looked at the woman shyly and blushed. She hadn’t expected the cake to win her over that quickly. “Thank you for the kind words. You’re the first person to taste my cake…well besides me.” Her hands began to slow as she calmed down and she looked around at the building. “Your bakery is very nice by the way. It’s very homey and welcoming.” She looked at the woman waiting for an answer, while she now appeared calm her skittish nature kept her on guard for now.
“Oh – that’s all,” Rina said.
She felt her heartbeat return to normal at those words. She allowed herself to relax satisfied she wasn’t being tricked or endangered by this woman. It wasn’t so much she felt threatened by the woman so much as experiencing a stress overload. The fight at the grocery store, followed by losing her job, then having her food tasted, finally leading up to the possibility of getting a new job in the course of a few hours was becoming too much for her.
“If you want the job, you’ve certainly got it, Miss Jones.”
Sarah’s eyes lit up and she smiled. “I would love to work here.” Like a large hand had dumped a bucket of warm water on her she felt a wave of relaxation flow into her. She had landed a job, the stress on her lifted away as fast as it had landed on her. She still felt faint tremors in her hand but that was from excitement now. “Thank you.” A faint headache formed now, a sign she’d been under extreme stress, this she ignored. “Please forgive my nervousness Rina. I’m sort of a nervous person when it comes to new situations.” She didn’t tell her this was because of a run in with Daleks though, not everyone needed to know that. She sat at one of the tables and opened her bag looking for her phone to check the time. Just visible in the bag is a small sketchbook with the barely visible picture of a sketched Dalek.
Rina smiled at the compliment and nodded. “Well, I should hope so,” she chuckled. “This bakery is my home. It’s where I’ve lived for seven years now. Upstairs, see?” she said, pointing to the staircase in the back. “My husband lives with me. And it’s where our child will grow up,” Rina said a little dreamily, a wistful smile on her face. All right, so she was barely two months along, but Rina was already envisioning a perfect little mix of herself and her husband running around.
(Her hair, his eyes, her temperament, his sense of adventure, and—)
She snapped out of her reverie with a sheepish chuckle. “Oh, ah, I said that to say this. If you ever need something, don’t feel shy. Just come by – even if it’s not during the open hours, we’ll still be here. And you’re part of the family now, so welcome to it!” she said. It finally occurred to her that Sarah was, as far as Rina could tell in her limited knowledge of the woman, a human. Rina herself was far from human, and though it was fairly obvious that she didn’t look like most human women (her height, her low weight, her hollow bone, and the missing of several human anatomical and physiological structure) her differences could be explained by Earth ‘diseases’. Her husband was… partly human, but his eyes were very obviously alien. And her workers… well, as long as Oracle didn’t electrocute anyway and Raya didn’t turn into a cat, then they should be fine.
“Oh, don’t apologize, it’s perfectly natural,” Rina said. Her eyebrows wrinkled together a little in confusion as she saw the Dalek. Well, maybe this girl wasn’t a human after all. “That’s an interesting drawing,” Rina said politely. “Did they attack where you’re from? Is that why you’re here?” she asked sympathetically. She could relate to a home-world being invaded. She had never been to Dulkis, but the Dominators had overrun and practically destroyed it. Still, the Dalek didn’t mean Sarah was an alien. Daleks had attacked Earth a few times.
Sarah smiled a bit growing even more relaxed in the woman’s presence. She loved children and had often dreamed of having her own child, so when the woman mentioned she was pregnant Sarah couldn’t help the beaming smile that spread across her face or the excitement that crept into her voice. “Oh congrats! You look wonderful! How far are you along?” She forced herself to shut up before she went too far. She blushed a bit and let the woman continue, she had also noted the woman seemed to be somewhere else to considering the dreamy smile on her face.
“Oh, ah, I said that to say this. If you ever need something, don’t feel shy. Just come by – even if it’s not during the open hours, we’ll still be here. And you’re part of the family now, so welcome to it!” she said.
Sarah dipped her head a bit in thanks. She didn’t know if she’d ever take the woman up on her offer. She preferred to spend her free time either painting or sketching, or sometimes playing her panpipes. Yet considering her favorite past-time was baking she just might. This woman seemed loads nicer than her former boss; she even seemed like a woman she’d get along with. “Thank you for the offer miss, I will consider it.” Who knew, maybe they’d become friends and Sarah might actually come around for advice. She needed friends; she spent too much time alone even she knew that.
Sarah felt herself begin to become her normal happy, though still shy, self again. She had completely forgotten her former boss, though she did still imagine quite happily forcing the man to drink sardine juice, and got used to the new idea of Rina as her nice new boss. “You’d be surprised how many people don’t understand that.” She quietly added in her mind, and it’s not like I can tell them. She then noticed the woman’s eyes had traveled down to her purse and she tensed a bit in silent hopes she didn’t see the Dalek.
“That’s an interesting drawing,” Rina said politely. “Did they attack where you’re from? Is that why you’re here?” she asked sympathetically.
Sarah’s heart dropped when she did notice the Dalek. However a wave of confusion at the fact she seemed to know what a Dalek was wiped the fear away. Even more confusing was the fact Rina seemed to think she wasn’t from here. Did she know what aliens were and think because Sarah knew what Daleks were that she herself was an alien? She shook her head and decided to set the woman straight. “Yes they attacked me a few Christmases ago. I live not too far away from here. I draw them to keep the grief and fear of them from overwhelming me. They killed my…” She quickly stopped herself; she didn’t want to tell this woman what they had done to her yet. “I am from Earth.”
She looked at the woman a bit closer and noticed on closer observation the woman didn’t appear as human as she had first thought. “Are you from Earth?” She hadn’t meant to ask the question out loud and blushed as soon as she did. “Oh I’m so sorry! That was so presumptuous of me.” She suddenly hoped the woman didn’t fire her on the spot.
“Not very far at all. Just a few months,” Rina said, a little distressed that these things took so long. She was anxious to meet her child, but it would have to wait. In the meantime, life would go on as normal until she couldn’t. “It’s very kind of you to say that,” she smiled. “I do hope that you’ll consider it. I think that we could be very good friends.” Well, Rina wanted to be friends with everyone, but her employees were especially important. The bakery was her home, after all. She wanted it to be theirs as well.
Rina sat across from Sarah, listening to her story quietly. She had met Daleks once, and she hadn’t particularly enjoyed the encounter. It had only been by the grace of being found by a Time Lord that she’d survived at all – too weak to fight, and ignorant of the ways of their hatred. She had been at a disadvantage. “That’s terrible,” Rina said, her voice hushed as Sarah stopped right before telling her. “Oh, I’m so sorry. I am.”
At her question, Rina giggled, waving away the woman’s apology. “No, don’t apologize. I am from Earth, but only just. I’m a Dulcian, from the planet Dulkis. We’re a very… meek people. Mostly wiped out now, living in protected refugee areas. During the last stages of the invasion, Dulcian women endured genetic altering to change the chemical structures of their children. My mother was one of those – it assured that I could neither ever be angry nor fight back. Our people were servants.” It was a polite way to say that they had been enslaved, but Rina liked to think positive. “But we escaped to Earth. Other Dulcians are on other planets, I’m sure.”

Sarah smiled at the woman and dipped her head in thanks. “I love children. They are so fun to have around at times.” She looked thoughtful at the idea of being friends with this woman. “I’d love to be your friend Rina. I don’t have very many of those, I’m not all that social as it is.” She shrugged hopelessly, it was true and she couldn’t really change that. She didn’t really have a lot of people she could go to to discuss what had happened to her.
“That’s terrible,” Rina said, her voice hushed as Sarah stopped right before telling her.“Oh, I’m so sorry. I am.”
She sighed and looked at her new friend with saddened eyes. “Thank you. It was terrible but it has made me stronger now. I am following my dreams and not letting people control my life.” She might not be brave or strong, but she was in control of her life. “I miss him terribly but at least he died quickly.” She looked down and sighed, she still felt torn that he had died saving her life.

Sarah looked at the woman in front of her, suddenly she felt the insane desire to hug this woman. She suppressed this desire quickly and sighed. “I’m so sorry Rina. No one should have to be forced to do anything like that.” Her eyes blazed suddenly, the memory of her former boss and how he had treated her flashed in her mind’s eye. The thought that people like him were torturing others to this degree made her mad. “If one of these, cretins, tried to hurt me or dared to come here I’d destroy them.” She raged and glared down at her hands. “I won’t let them hurt my friends or me, or my planet for that matter, holding anyone as a servant is wrong. If you’re to lazy to take care of yourself you don’t deserve to live.” She looked at Rina and then blushed.
