It’d been a few Earth months since the accidental and somewhat whimsical creation of his Fledgling. It’d been too recent for Iblîs to properly care for the poor creature – nothing that was the Fledgling’s fault, of course. It was Iblîs who should have been in better control of his emotions. Still, he refused to allow this one to develop as the other embarrassment had. He wouldn’t shove this Fledgling to a weak-willed Caretaker who would allow this… (what did he call himself now?) Nyx… to slip through the cracks of Initiation.
Most Initiations took place on Earth, with the Caretakers teaching the Fledglings a multitude of different things. How to use their powers, how to control themselves, how to hide and blend their Lamps into their surroundings, how to blend in with humans, and how to survive by themselves. And those Fledglings that didn’t take to the Initiation were brought back to the Council, so that a course of action could be done. As the Head of the Council, Iblîs tried to visit each Fledgling at least once in its life, though it was a task that was difficult as there were often a thousand Fledglings being created each day.
Nyx’s Initiation would take place in the Council, in a section designated solely to training those who couldn’t take to Earth very well. It was a combination of necessity – as the Council tended to lose sight of things without Iblîs’ oversight – and of Iblîs’ own concern for his Fledgling. The last time he’d entrusted one of his ‘children’ to one of the Caretakers, he’d ended up decommissioning them both after almost fifty years.
“Do you realize who I am?” Iblîs asked, watching the fledgling curiously.
