History: Ruby was born 15 years after her older sister Amethyst, who goes by Amy, to a nice couple who were very shocked to have one child much less two. Amy was a golden child, swimming in extracurriculars and excellent grades it allowed Ruby to grow up a little quieter. She was a smart child but always strange, not fantastic at speaking she was drawn to the other odd children. The odd children liked video games, she liked video games. The odd children liked scary stories, she liked scary stories. She adapted based on the group she felt most at ease with and for several years flew under the radar with this. [/p]
When she was 8 years old Ruby discovered witches, not witchcraft, but the historical and fictional culture built upon them. She read book after book on the Salem witches both fictional and non, immersed herself in the world of Harry Potter, a proud hufflepuff, every piece of media she could consume about witches she did. It wasn't until she was 10 however that she realized that witchcraft was a modern practice.
She studied, checking books out from the library and hiding them under her bed. Practicing by the book potion magic with very little creativity for fear of ruining it. She quickly formed her everything is magic philosophy which she kept close to her heart especially when studying science in school.
Her first Tarot deck was purchased at 13 in secret from an odd witchy shop on the bad part of town. She spent a full year studying Tarot before buying her own. Shortly after she bought a pendulum board and began practicing her readings with her small group of friends from school.
By 15 she decided it was time to adopt the title of witch. Her magic flowed more freely and she had adopted kitchen witchery as a new love. Gone were potions, now she lived for making all manner of food both savory and sweet with magical intention. Much of her work was still rigid at this point and while she strayed from the books slightly, she still had a fear of ruining things.
18 was the year of freedom for Ruby. She came out to her family as both a witch and pansexual, started her blog, and started practicing more open magic. She didn't feel the need to stick to her books anymore, now relying on intent and feeling to practice. She adopted 2 cats from a shelter and moved in with her sister after taking a job at the store she managed. A year later she began selling readings online and in the local witch shop for a little extra cash, all while keeping it fairly quiet to not disturb her sister’s name. Online she goes by The Red Witch of Indiana because she feels it makes her sound like an urban legend.
Addition Medical Information: Nothing physical but she does have severe combined type ADHD and anxiety disorder that affects how she lives her life and interacts with others.
RP Sample: “Amethyst Aurora.” Ruby sat cross legged on the counter, her purse open in front of her half the contents spilled out. She was staring intently at her sister, a gesture that was obvious despite the fact that her hair was obscuring much of her face. Her sister stood by the door, effectively ignoring her.
“Amy. Please.” Ruby tried again to get her sister’s attention, her voice rising above the near whisper volume it usually rested at. Amy finally turned to look at her, arms folded across her chest.
“Put your shoes on, clean up your rocks and get down off the counter we could have customers.” Ruby recoiled slightly. Her dynamic with Amy was different from anyone else's, Amy was the person she found herself most at ease with. She was comfortable, her posture relaxed and her oddities spilling from her bag where they were usually locked away. She spoke more firmly too, rarely stuttering or lacking words at all.
“Amethyst Aurora Renault it is a Tuesday in the middle of January, there is about 3 feet of snow outside and it is currently snowing. No one is coming in this store, please, let me do a practice reading on you?” She shifted her hair out of her face and stared Amy down until she broke. It didn't take long.
“Fine but pick up your stuff. Ask your cards if it's worth calling that guy back from the other night.” Amy shuffled over and leaned against the counter, keeping an eye on the door.
Ruby carefully gathered all the loose odds and ends that had spilled out of her purse. Every item had importance and while she often dropped them she made a point to put them back with care each time.
“So, you want to know if you should call him back. I'll do a one card reading wiiiith,” she rooted carefully through her bag and pulled out a bundle wrapped in pink strawberry printed cloth and tied with a lace bow. “This one.” Carefully she set to work, unwrapping the bow and shuffling the cards about. After a few minutes of this she set a card face down on the table and placed the deck beside her. With a flourish she flipped the card and made a thoughtful noise.
“And?” Amy asked, glancing down at the card on the table. Ruby nodded.
“Call him. The Chariot, upright. I could go into a long speech about what it means but basically you should move forward. The Chariot is basically telling you to go ahead ‘cause good things will happen.” There was a long silence as they stared at each other, broken by Amy taking her phone from her pocket and excusing herself to the opposite side of the store. Pleased, Ruby collected her cards and kissed her deck before wrapping it up again. She and her sister were fairly close but it was rare that they bonded like this over her interests. It was nice, to say the very least.
