In downtown London a young woman stepped out of a hotel room with a stuffed military green backpack on her back. It was the sort of thing you would see a seasoned traveler lug with them on a walkabout across country. The woman looked like a regular shopper at your local Army surplus store, her long blonde hair pulled back out of her face in a dangling ponytail. She walked down the hall of the hotel and dropped her room key off at the front desk with a bright smile at the clerk behind the counter. She had been there an entire week, much longer then she had stayed at any other place with the exception of Torchwood and she was reluctant to leave, but adventure wasn't going to find her, she would have to find it.
Leaving the building Jenny stepped out into the bright sun and glanced both ways briefly before starting her trek that she hoped would led her to Amsterdam, down through Belgium, down further to Paris France and then finally to Madrid, where she would plan her next traveling root. The weather was getting colder and she decided that until the weather warmed back up would probably be a good idea to find a place to stay throughout the worst of the cold months. But she wanted to get as much traveling done as she possibly could.
She had only been on earth for a few months and already she was thinking of it as home and after her travels she wanted to go back to Cardiff or maybe London and go to a University and learn everything she could there. But that wouldn't be for a year atleast. In the meantime, traveling across the planet on foot was how she wanted to spend her time. She decided that she would probably see more on foot then traveling on land though the air or in an automobile and so far she believed that she was right to travel this way.
She had discovered music, movies, Cherry Coke, and Jelly Babies… it was all good and she discovered something new, each and every day. She watched the bustling people going about their daily business with interest. Taxi’s, buses, cars, and motor bikes traveled along the expansions of roads that were everywhere. It was a busy place, so full of life so unlike her home world. These people lived in the light and Jenny hoped that the surviving people of her planet were now living on the planet instead of in it and that the fighter was truly over.
She continued walking, putting one foot in front of the other when she smelt the smoke and heard the screams of a fire truck and a police vehicle screech past. Curiosity got the better of her as she headed in the direction that sirens had gone.
It was an apartment building ablaze. Smoke billowed from one of the upper most floors. People were milled about looking up, yelling, and pointing at the spectacle. People rushed out of the door of the building, some clutching a few precious items and an old lady with a fluffy white animal of some sort. A woman was screaming that someone was still in the building and something about monsters, the firefighters started to hook up a hose to a fire hydrant nearby. Jenny walked over to the screaming woman. “What floor? Where are they?” Jenny asked the hysterical woman as jenny dropped her backpack to the ground with a dull thud. “The top floor, they’re on the top floor,” the woman yelled, and with those words Jenny rushed into the building as others were rushing out.
