He was ready, well, he supposed he'd always been ready in a way. More, he'd waited to find the right time to go back and see her again. Everything had stopped spinning so fast, he could see clearly. The Doctor set the coordinates, he knew where she lived, it was just a matter of pushing the ignition and going.
This was going to be tough, for them both. Emilie had needed time, to figure herself out, that's what she'd asked for. It didn't help that much, that his previous incarnation had shown up. Emilie had done things right, she kept the spoilers to herself.
He supposed, they couldn't resist each other. That's what it felt like now that he was coming back.
The Doctor bit his lip, considering turning back. His hand was hovering over the button. Finally, he couldn't take it any longer, and hit it, sending the TARDIS through the vortex. She knew where she was going. The Doctor figured the TARDIS wanted to see her just as badly as he did.
It had been five weeks, three days, and nine hours since Emilie had last seen the Doctor. She'd started the count unintentionally at first, after the skinny boy with the fantastic coat and trainers had stepped out of the TARDIS, stared at her for a moment, and said hello 'one more time'.
Emilie knew a farewell when she heard one.
But this was the Doctor. Anything was possible with that man. At least, that was what Emilie told herself.
So when the unmistakeable sound of the TARDIS materializing came? Emilie was out the door to see in a flash.

He sighed, checking himself in the reflection of the TARDIS's label on the underside of the console. Hair, immaculate. Suit, perfect. Bowtie, cool. He was good to go. The Doctor stood up straight and headed for the door, stopping again. Why was he dragging his feet this much? He didn't know. Maybe, because it was going to hurt, it was going to hurt to see the hurt in her eyes.
He opened the door and stepped out, Emilie wasn't right there, but she was probably on her way, he could feel that. He took the opportunity to make sure the TARDIS herself looked nice, door shut properly. There didn't appear to be any damages.
Emilie's mother couldn't look haggard, who even knew when the last time she'd heard from her was, The Doctor knew that the TARDIS had her ways of seeing her daughter.
There she was, Emilie, headed right for him. His hands fumbled for the safety of his pockets, but got stuck in an awkward half in, half out phase.
He looked at her a good long moment before speaking, "Hello Emilie."
Emilie's heart caught in her throat (as silly as the expression was) when she saw the Doctor. Her Doctor. And as happy as she was to see him, Emilie was also heartbroken that the man who had grown to mean so much to her was gone.
Oh, he lived on in a way, yes. But she was going to miss him. With his daft hair that defied gravity and the brainy specs and everything else.
She tried to smile, honest, she did. But as Emilie stood there in front of Eleven, it was all she could do not to run right to him.
He could see it was hurting, seeing her hurt made him hurt, because he knew it was because of him that she looked like that, so, sad. He didn't know what to do with his hands, they kind of messed about at his sides idly, that seemed as good a place as any.
"I, didn't want to come right away," The Doctor started, "Because." He didn't have a reasonable excuse for how long he had taken to see her, "Because I didn't know if it had been enough time yet."
She'd asked him for some space, The Doctor gave it, as much as he hadn't, "But, I couldn't wait any longer Emilie." A pause, "I miss you."
It was a thin excuse, but Emilie gave it to him. There were times when it was best to rip a bandaid directly off a wound, and there were others when bandages were needed to allow the hurt to heal protected.
"But, I couldn't wait any longer Emilie." A pause, "I miss you."
"I've missed you too."
Looking down to the ground, she added, "You you. This you. How... how long has it been?"
That was all he had to make up for how long he'd stayed away, he knew the day that he'd seen her, for the most part, but he'd stayed out of his own fears of how she'd react when he came back with this face. No matter how much he missed her, having Emilie angry with him, something he tried to avoid at all costs.
And, she missed him as well, that brought his smile back, a bit.
Looking down to the ground, she added, "You you. This you. How... how long has it been?"
He carefully avoided his age for now, "Since the last time you saw this me? Ten, ten years." Ten years from his perspective at least. He'd been wrapped up in so much danger, things that Emilie wouldn't have been able to handle, not because she wasn't capable, but because they were Gallifreyan issues to be solved by Gallifreyans.
But, for the first time in a long time, ten years passed agonizingly slowly.
Ten years. A blink to him, maybe, and she couldn't really talk when she had spent at least a year on and off with UNIT and his previous self. But a year was an awful lot shorter than ten, at least by her reckoning.
"T-ten. And what? You just decided to come back to say hello? If this is you saying hello."
There was a scary thought. He wasn't honestly visiting just to say goodbye again, was he?
"T-ten. And what? You just decided to come back to say hello? If this is you saying hello."
The Doctor knew she'd become cross eventually, better to deal with it all now, instead of agonizing over it and waiting to see what would and could happen, yes, best to do it now. He explained himself, "I've been working, with other Time Lords. On something important, about my home world. I couldn't leave it unattended."
He continued, "I could have left and popped back for when you were ready to see me again Emilie. I wanted to, because you're so very important to me."
"We both needed time, I suppose. To grow, and learn. There are things about me I can't quite explain yet, but, it's getting there." The Doctor blinked, he could see the worry on her face, "This isn't goodbye Emilie. Never goodbye, not to you."
And he meant that, The Doctor Lies did not apply here, "I will not ever leave you. Ever. Not unless you want me to."
Whatever he was working on, or rather had been working on, was need to know. As soon as he even referenced Gallifrey, Emilie understood that. Was she curious? Terribly. Was she going to ask out here in the open when it wasn't even her most pressing concern? Heck no.
There are things about me I can't quite explain yet, but, it's getting there.
"I know that feeling," Emilie's mouth quirked slightly in half laughter from nerves as much as amusement.
I will not ever leave you. Ever. Not unless you want me to.
She could laugh now, ignoring the aggravating tears that clung to her eyelashes. "Mum probably wouldn't let you anyway."
Knowing it was for his home planet seemed to be enough for Emilie, The Doctor was glad that she wouldn't hold his long absence against him. None seemed to, and The Doctor was pleased enough. Still, he felt he needed to make it up to her someday soon. Not today, today was the day for another selfish request of his to Emilie, he hoped she'd say yes.
"I know that feeling."
She would, wouldn't she? He smiled lightly before making it clear he'd never leave her willingly, "I will not ever leave you. Ever. Not unless you want me to."
"Mum probably wouldn't let you anyway."
He chuckled after that, he couldn't help it, it was funny. Mostly, because it was true, the TARDIS wouldn't let him either.
"Doctor?"
The Doctor stepped forward as well, a small step closer toward her as well, "Emilie. Before you say anything, let me finish." He took a breath and answered, "Come with me again. Please? Permanently, you and me, in the TARDIS forever."
He was being very serious and that was starting to become a bit frightening. One of the nice things about Ten had been that neither of them had to admit what they thought about each other.
The younger Doctor pretended to ignore Emilie's affection for him, and Emilie pretended to ignore that he was so very broken.
"Come with me again. Please? Permanently, you and me, in the TARDIS forever."
The constricted feeling in her chest probably indicated that Emilie wasn't breathing as she should. The girl knew that she ought to fix that, but at the same time... she almost couldn't remember to do so. Not with so many questions, so many thoughts bumping about in her head.
Like the fact she might not have forever.
Or how very scared she was actually, to return to him. Scared to lose herself to her Thief.
"Come with me again. Please? Permanently, you and me, in the TARDIS forever."
The Doctor gave Emilie an earnest gaze, hoping she'd agree, and give him the smile, that one that always came out before she'd utter her catchphrase or when they'd discovered something truly amazing. There were different grins Emilie made, ranging from hiding her anger to trying to be brave to honestly happy. That's what he was aiming to see.
He wanted it so badly.
But, the smile had not come. Not even a peek of one, The Doctor deflated a little and the rapid four beats in his chest pounded harder when Emilie asked, "Why?"
The Doctor didn't have a precise answer, he'd thought it hadn't been needed to be said. Apparently, the feelings between her and his previous self had not carried over. He hadn't expected this. Finally, words bubbled up.
"Because," The Doctor uttered, "Because, I thought that's what you wanted." He was just rubbish at this, making his own intentions known to anyone but himself, "It's, what I wanted."
He looked crushed, and Emilie did not even think to stop herself from moving closer. Stopping in front of him with a sad, tender smile.
"My Doctor, my Thief, don't look so pained."
She raised a hand to his cheek.
"It's not that I don't want to. I do. Don't you see? That's the trouble of it. I do want to. I never want to leave your side. There's so much to see, so much to do, and it would mean all the more to be there with you and not on my own."
Lowering her gaze to be even with his shoulders, Emilie continued.
His eyes found her's. The Doctor's eyes locked onto Emilie's now. He could feel her hand on his cheek, he didn't tense, there was a warmness she made him feel every time they had contact.
And she told him, explained herself to him. The Doctor felt a weight leave his shoulders. Emilie called him 'Her Thief'. Oh that girl, just like her mother in so many ways. Did that make things odd? He didn't know, because so many of his feelings were not unlike those he felt for his TARDIS. Was Emilie a TARDIS with a successful flesh body? He couldn't tell, but the Sonic had never dissolved her, which meant she was more than flesh now. Oh his TARDIS was such a clever girl.
And her daughter was equally amazing, simply by the way five words could lift him up.
"It's all I've ever wanted."
His eyes grew intense, for a moment, he pulled Emilie in. Oh, he might be rubbish at this, he hadn't kissed a human being in hundreds of years, but, he'd had good reviews in the past, so here went nothing. A head tilt and move in, The Doctor kissed Emilie. For real, no false pretenses, no faked personality, truly The Doctor.
