Letting go was such a strange feeling. Millennia wasn't sure what she had expected, but she supposed that she thought dying would have lasted a bit longer than this. Gallifreyans must make terrible friends for Death, she hadn't even had time to do more than think about having a spot of tea before the tickling started to burn.
It wasn't a bad burning, precisely, but then her synapses were all jumbled, so she wasn't really able to observe much anyway.
Burning, turning, we keep on learning....
She was like fire, burning through time. As old as forever, but fast in her prime!
No, no, that wasn't her song. Did she have a song? Songs were nice. Perhaps she could find one.
In a rush, Millennia sank to her knees as the transformation completed. Well, mostly completed. The energy was still tickling about, lingering like a memory or a well worn scarf.
Memories... where were those. She was sure she had left them about somewhere.
Maybe she'd left them in the play room?
No, no. That'd be silly! Magnus wouldn't have let her do that, even if everyone else was too busy!
Oh, Magnus. She missed him. Even with that funny beard he was always insisting on. Or was that Mortimus? No, no. She was fifty percent positive.
Magnus was a fan of stomping people's back while they tried to crawl away after he'd taught them a lesson. When it was corrupted royalty, it was even better. He held him down with his foot following the stomp, smirking, "Hey word of advice, if you're going to oppress your people, make sure they don't have enough money to cover my asking price."
With a dead lift, the tyrant was up over The War Chief's shoulder, "Maybe next time. If there is a next time." With a charge, Magnus brought him to the window, and tossed him out and over the side of the rather massive building.
"That's what you get for building your castle with the blood and sweat of your people." He shrugged it off when something struck a chord in the back of his mind. Magnus stared out the window into the sky.
Someone was looking for him, or at least thinking about him a whole lot. A Time Lord? It would have to be, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to sense it. Someone with a lot of psychic potential. It had to be, Chief could feel the origin as well.
"Well, guess I'd better go track my admirer down."
The slight breeze died, and Milli shivered expectantly from the heat before pausing abruptly and raising a hand to her head.
Curls. She had curls? Since when did her hair curl?
Standing up abruptly - not the best plan, her knees protest vehemently and called her all sorts of names, chief of which was idiot - Milli peered at her hair to inspect it.
Blonde. After all these centuries with straight blue hair, here she was stuck with curly blonde hair.
She wasn't sure if that should make her happy or sad.
The colouring flickered a little, or had there always been streaks?
Shaking her head, ooh that was dizzy making no Ferris Wheels today, the Time Lady closed her eyes.
Who am I?
The tickling was in her throat now, and she coughed out threads of gold mist. Regeneration energy, her mind called it.
Rege-what? Was that some kind of cheese?
No, no, no. She had to focus! Focus. Zoom in, use the 40 X and apply a small drop of oil to the slide before ramping up to 100X magnification.
No! Still wrong. She didn't have a micro- or tele-whatsit.
Where was Magnus? Or the TARDIS? She had one of those, didn't she?
That hadn't been left in the play room too, had it? Oh that would be terrible. She would have to make great pots of tea and sing a song to chase the legions of dolls to dreaming and be sure to tell the Queen to chop off her own head this time.
Years ago, during and before the war, it was impossible to pinpoint another Time Lord, let alone feel them call out to you. Now? When there were maybe eleven or twelve of them left in the Universe? It wasn't a matter of sensing it, it was a matter of how long it would take to get there.
The War Chief was flipping switches, turning dials, twisting knobs and pulling levers furiously. The black TARDIS flew through time and space. He left the Chameleon Circuit off almost constantly, not because he was so confident in the perception filter that he didn't need to hide it, but because he found her beautiful without the fancy wares.
She'd saved him from the terrors of the Time War, nothing, no one could be more beautiful than his savior. At least, no one had proved that wrong yet.
Soon enough, he'd landed, apparently the TARDIS had been in as much as rush as he had been. Chief grinned as he headed for the door, stopping only as he caught the reflection of himself on the way out. Magnus stopped and licked his thumb before wiping his cheek with it. Natrine blood tended to smear if you weren't careful when cleaning it.
Cleaned to his satisfaction, he hit the control for the door and poked his head out. There just ahead was the Time Lady, this was getting exciting now. She appeared to the one vying for his attention from across the Universe. Lucky enough they happened to be in the same year when she called.
He paused, remembering that typically not many Time Lords spent time with humans. Hell, until the War Games, neither had he. But after that, he became very aware of how humans spoke, and even adopted the adaptions to the language when he'd escaped the time war.
"It's an express-"
"Wait. You're not my TARDIS, are you? I have this strange feeling I ought to be in one."
"I don't suppose you know who I am, do you? Or where my best friend is?"
He smiled a bit, poor girl, she must've just regenerated, the jittery speech, falling all over herself. He moved to help steady the Time Lady as she coughed up more regenerative energy, "Just like I thought. You've regenerated. I've only done it once, so I know how you feel."
"Well," Magnus started, "Assuming by your clothing, you were female before? So, that leaves three options, at least of who I know." He caught her eyes, "You could be Ushas? The Rani? But, you're too nice, and she would've thrown a fit if her hair came out blonde. Streaks or no."
He eyed her a little closer again, "I don't think you're the young one, Romana. She was always good at regenerating. Or at least, that's what The Doctor said, I only met her when she was about to be thrown out of office. So! That means, you're Millennia then, aren't you? I'm pretty good at this game, we should play Guess Who sometime."
Regenerated? Yes, regenerated sounded right. The familiar stranger knew what was going on at least.
"Of course I'm not Ushas. Does it look like I'm taking notes of everything that's happening?"
Ooh, that sounded bitter. Was she bitter? She hoped not. No, she was more curious by this man.
So while he went about trying for her name, Milli circled him curiously. A cat who has found an intriguing toy and isn't sure whether to give chase or to grab onto it while purring at her achievement.
So! That means, you're Millennia then, aren't you? I'm pretty good at this game, we should play Guess Who sometime."
"Millennia?" She paused. "That sounds... right. Millennia. Milli. Look how much I've shrunk!"
Well..in some areas. Her clothes were fitting her an awful lot tighter in others now.
"My turn. You aren't my TARDIS, I can see that. Are you my Magnus?"
Milli's eyes looked hopeful, the streaks in her hair shifting purple just from the possibility.
"Of course I'm not Ushas. Does it look like I'm taking notes of everything that's happening?"
Chief blinked, remembering the time that the two girls of The Deca dated, making all the boys jealous. He chuckled a bit, before continuing his guesses.
Romana didn't seem to catch her ears, good, she was too stuffy for him to get along with, if memory served him correctly, and usually it did. He beamed.
"So! That means, you're Millennia then, aren't you? I'm pretty good at this game, we should play Guess Who sometime."
There it was, she was remembering, he could see it in her eyes, "Millennia?" She paused. "That sounds... right. Millennia. Milli. Look how much I've shrunk!"
She was shorter, but that was alright, he'd lost two inches in his regeneration as well. Besides, she hadn't made scored too badly, Chief found her rather, attractive. Oh, that was new, finding your best friend attractive, was that supposed to happen?
"My turn. You aren't my TARDIS, I can see that. Are you my Magnus?"
He tapped his nose, letting her know she was spot on, "That's right. Not your TARDIS. Magnus indeed. Most people call me The War Chief now, or Chief for short." He grinned, and her hair streaks shifted colors, "That's a fun trick. All I can do is wiggle my nose."
Fit to burst with laughter, Millenia launched herself at him, hugging him tightly.
"Chief, huh? Like oh Captain, my Captain?"
Magnus would make a good chief, she was sure. He had certainly had always been good at putting others in their place when they made fun of her, anyway. Mind you, strength probably was not the best form of leadership, but then....
That's a fun trick. All I can do is wiggle my nose.
"Trick?" Well now, that was a funny way of putting things. All she had done was guess that he was her Magnus after all! Surely that couldn't be so tricky. It was only a matter of coaxing her synapses into a functioning state and her excitement and adrenaline had been all too quick to allow that.
Oh dear. Maybe that was another one of his express... expressions?
She jumped, so he caught her. She was just as light as she'd been when he'd hoisted her up and carried her out of the playroom.
He might have spun her a little bit. Milli had a bit of an exciting effect on him. Chief set her down and commented on her hair. It had changed colors right in front of him, and unless she was still fluctuating with her regeneration and trying to settle on her color, she was actually able to change it, involuntarily or not. Either way, he thought it was pretty.
Ugh. Pretty? When did he ever say pretty?
"Trick?"
Had she not noticed? So he explained for her, "Your hair Milli. It changed, well, the streaks did." He paused, "It's, interesting, not seeing you with blue hair, after a thousand or so years of remembering it that way." Chief smiled though, "I kind of like it."
"Now all I need is a good hat to be distinguished."
The War Chief snickered and gave her a nod, "Yeah, a hat might look good, you can check my wardrobe later." He explained, "But first, you ought to get sorted in the Zero Room. C'mon with me, I'll take you there and make you a cuppa, you'll like it."
He made a face, "When do I say cuppa. Bleh." He stuck his tongue out like he was trying to make it go away like a bad taste.
Oh good, her Magnus was going to help her get a hat. That was very kind of him. Magnus always was to her.
"Zero Room?"
The name sounded familiar, but not enough to mean much. And the centuries she had spent as a doll had a tendency to make those memories from before rather dusty. Milli would be sneezing her head off if she tried to uncover every one of them.
Still, she trusted him. So if Magnus thought a Zero Room was important, well, she would follow him there.
"A cuppa? Cup pa, mn.. Magnus, you have either gotten very confusing or my head is just...."
She stopped talking in favor of catching herself on his arm. Her legs still did not like the idea of standing very much.
"Alright, possibly it is just my head. Let's try this Zero Room and cuppa of yours if it means my body will stop trying to collapse around me."
The War Chief nodded his head and smiled a bit, "Mhm."
He saw the look of confusion. Chief knew that on top of not finishing at the Academy, she had a long time being a doll, and on top of that, she'd just regenerated all on her own with no one looking after her. Luckily, she was with him now, he could look after her.
He'd offered her tea and smiled warmly, but it seemed to have flown over her head. Damn human words, "It's tea Milli, don't worry, just come with me." And she did, falling into his arm and holding herself against him.
"Alright, possibly it is just my head. Let's try this Zero Room and cuppa of yours if it means my body will stop trying to collapse around me." Magnus nodded, then smirked a little bit, "Of course. Come on then, I'll help you."
And by help, he meant easily scoop her up and carry her off into his TARDIS.
Before Milli could ask how she was going to navigate even the short distance to his TARDIS without collapsing like a newborn fawn, Magnus had picked her up.
Which, she supposed did count as helping her, and was by far the most effective manner of doing so.
"I suppose it goes without saying that you should lead the way, yeah? Everything is ringing...."
Her ears, her head, her chest, her stomach, her hair... everything felt... tingly. With curiousity as much as the shiver of gold all around and through her.
