Annie closed her eyes against the cool night air as it blew around her, tangling her hair and blowing it out behind her. She opened her eyes and allowed herself to fall back onto the grass. Her eyes flickered around the sky, looking at the stars and trying to count them. She could hear the spirits up there, whispering to each other, observing her.
Annie then sighed and a tear fell down her cheek. Would she ever be normal? She loved her ghost/spirit friends but she couldn't help but wonder...what is it like to not be able to hear them every second? What is it like when they don't make sure your dreams aren't nightmares?
Breathing heavily, Annie shook these thoughts out of her head, but she sat up with a frown. She thought she could hear something else, under her friends' voices...
The temperate night air lashed at the Overseer’s face, albeit with very little intensity. This made the sensation very enjoyable for him; after all, not many climates could satisfy a sentient time-traveling humanoid alien. Pacing the soft grass was another tranquil pastime for him. Perhaps this was what it was like to be truly human, and not just resembling one. Humans found comfort in simple things – so why did Time Lords have to be met with the curse of complexity?
The Overseer was observing the night sky above him, the moonlit black embracing the green and swallowing it whole. Pacing aimlessly was his means of letting off steam, and in an environment like this, solitude could be easily enjoyed. Except, the Time Lord wasn’t exactly in solitude. He didn’t notice the girl sitting upright on the grass in front of him (much less while she was lying down), and he halted abruptly.
What does human one generally say to another when they’re lying on the ground alone? Do they generally lie down in pairs or teams? The logic baffled the Overseer. He knelt down on the cool, dew-caked grass, his hands on his knees.
“What are you on the ground for?” the Time Lord asked the girl absentmindedly, his deep voice echoing throughout the mostly vacant meadow. “Does the ground amuse or excite you? I don’t think many people traditionally get very much excitement out of grass, don’t you think?”
For the Overseer, this was a completely normal question. He had studied many species throughout his intergalactic travels, but humans were by far the most labyrinthine psychologically.
