William walked into the station holding a tray that had two cups of coffee on it as always. It was what he did every morning, stop by the coffee shop and get him and Nathanial a cup of coffee. Walking to his and Nate's office he set one on his partner's desk then put his own drink on his desk then put the tray into the bin.
Walking back to his desk, William sat down and started up his computer, while he waited for the computer to start up he opened the blinds then picked his hot beverage up and took a very careful sip. Seeing the computer was ready he set the cup down and got to work.
Seeing a familiar face he smiled, "Morning Nate." He said cheerfully.
Nate grumbled as he entered the office, ignoring the cheerful “Good Morning” of the secretary, passing the desks and other officers and went into the office he shared with his partner, Will. He shut the door behind him, roughly, rattling the glass of the door, flopping down the newspaper he'd been carrying under his arm and took his seat, and snatched up the coffee and took a slow drink from it.
His eyes narrowed at Will and looked back down at the coffee, It was fine, but it was a game they played. “There's too much damned cream, again!” he muttered, pushing the coffee away and leaned his chair back to put his feet up on the desk to glare hotly at Will, crossing his arms over his chest. “How are you so pleasant in the mornings?”
Will watched as Nate slammed the door, flinching some as he picked his coffee up and took a swig and set it down before going back to typing. He eyed his partner for a moment, seeing he was taking one of his long slow drink of the coffee, he knew what was going to happen next. The ex soldier just looked back at his computer.

"Too much cream? I put the exact amount that you like.. unless that changes day to day.." William replied, not looking away from the computer screen except to glance down at the file in front of him, "Well then.. next time you get your own coffee." William told him after a short moment of silence.
He could feel that Nate was glaring at him, "Knock that look off Nate.. you know that I do not like it.. How am I so pleasant in the mornings? Well I wake up, wish my wife a good morning, get dressed help her make breakfast and kiss her before I walk out the door." William replied.
Printing what he was typing up, he reached to his printer and took it off the machine and read it over before putting it into the file, "Nate.. just try to be a little more nicer.. With how you behave.. well lets say if you do it to the wrong person you will get hurt or worse. I don't want to see that happen.." William said before walking out the door, closing it behind him gently.
"Too much cream? I put the exact amount that you like.. unless that changes day to day.." William replied, and Nate simply rolled his eyes. It was a game they played. Nate was relatively sure that Will didn’t see the humor in it, but it was something to occupy his mind when he wasn't working on a case., "Well then.. next time you get your own coffee." William told him after a short moment of silence. Nate made a 'pfft' nose as he sipped the coffee again. “Yeah, that's likely.” he fired back, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
Nate just stared at Will as he finished up the report on a case they were working on when Will suddenly remarked.. , "Knock that look off Nate.. you know that I do not like it.. How am I so pleasant in the mornings? Well I wake up, wish my wife a good morning, get dressed help her make breakfast and kiss her before I walk out the door." William replied. Nate just rolled his eyes and leaned back in his desk chair, taking another swig of the coffee. “Must be nice” he said somewhat sourly. Of course, he hadn't met Raya just yet...
"Nate.. just try to be a little more nicer.. With how you behave.. well lets say if you do it to the wrong person you will get hurt or worse. I don't want to see that happen.." William said before walking out the door, closing it behind him gently. Nate sighed before mumbling to himself “Well if everyone else weren’t such idiots..” before finishing his coffee and crumpling the disposable cup and tossing it into the bin before going to follow Will into the main office. “Oy, Will.. I'm heading out. There's something I need to take care of” he grumbled slightly. Will knew Nate well enough to know that he was about to head to the cemetary. It was Nadine's birthday and he always laid a single rose on her grave every year. “If you need me, you know my cell”
William just handed in the case file when he was handed another, "Thank you love.." He said to the secretary as he was handed the file and started looking through it, he whistled some when he got to the photoes, "Boy someone really hated this bloke.. were there any witnesses?"William asked the secretary, glancing up momentarily at her then back to the file. Then blinked when he saw there were three others that were somehow connected that were killed.
"There was one.. currently he is in the hospital." She handed him a small stack of papers, "Unfortunately he was shot as well."
William took that stack as well and looked through, "Was it fatal?"
"No. He is currently stable, thank goodness." The secretary said quietly.
"Yes thank goodness for that. I will see if maybe I can visit him to see if I can get a look of the suspect out of him." William said as he tucked both the papers and the file under his arm.
"Well if everyone else weren’t such idiots..” before finishing his coffee and crumpling the disposable cup and tossing it into the bin before going to follow Will into the main office. “Oy, Will.. I'm heading out. There's something I need to take care of” he grumbled slightly. Will knew Nate well enough to know that he was about to head to the cemetary. It was Nadine's birthday and he always laid a single rose on her grave every year. “If you need me, you know my cell”
William looked to Nate, "Oh alright.." Then something in the man snapped, "You just got here Nate and we have another important case!" The old soldier said as he walked over to Nate, "This one is a must to solve as soon as possible! Four people killed in four days and possibly by the same killer." The ex soldier tried to hand the file to Nate as he followed the man to the door, "Nate! Can't you go to that place a little later when we have a foot hold in this case? As I said, you just got here mate." The man asked as his partner kept on walking.
Stopping at the door as he watched Nate walk out the door, shaking his head he turned around and started walking back to their office.
Nate seemed to fume in annoyance as Will demanded to know why he was heading out only shortly after arriving. And when annoyed, his native accent was more than obvious. He prided himself as passing for English, but....
"Aye, Ah jus got 'ere. Yer point bein'?"
It was no secret that Nate did things his own way. It was part of the reason he didn't get along with hardly anyone on the department.
"An' if yer insitin' on being me partner, You'd better be gettin' one thing t'rough yer head. Either keep up or button it. Get in th' car" he grumbled, nodding towards their squad car. He cleared his throat and ran his hand through his hair, talking a moment to calm and pull back into his fake English accent. "Bring the files with you, we're making a stop after I handle this. I'm going to need you with me."
He made his way outside and headed towards the car, not giving Will much of a chance to protest. He was annoyed that their captain insisted Nate needed a partner. And while Will might not have been new to being a policeman, Will had a lot to learn about Detective work. "You'll learn more in the field than you will from scraps of paper"
William did not fail to notice the Irish accent, he frowned some. Not really towards the accent, more to the tone of voice that Nate was using. He did have some problems with the Irish, he was there when The Irish were causing problems in Northern Ireland and was one of those that were ordered to stand watch at the border, some of his shifts were eight to ten hours long and often ate small meals when he could at his post.
"My point is that we should really concentrate on the case for a little while before you head to where you are going." Will quietened down when he realized that he was not going to be getting anywhere with his reasons, the man he was partnered with was as stubborn as a bull, and could be just as temperamental, and the change in the man's accent was a warning sign of just that.
Will's expression became placid, "Do you think that I chose to be your partner Nathanial?" He looked back to the Secretary as she started walking over and signaled that everything was alright, the woman nodded and walked back around to her desk, then looked back to Nate, "Oh I can do more than just keep up Mate." He sighed some as the man turned around and started walking to the car. Running his fingers through his hair the man looked as a woman handed him his coat, "Thank you sweet heart." He said quietly before walking out to the squad car, checking that he had his hand gun as he got into the car.
The man quietly got into the car, closing the door before putting his seat belt on, "The Captain made me be your partner because he thought that it will be good for ya, now pipe down and deal with it, got it?" He looked out the window, pressing a hand to his chin, "I don't like it any more than you do so we will just have to deal with being partners."
"You'll learn more in the field than you will from scraps of paper"
Will looked to Nate, "I know that Nathanial, I learned that the hard way in the Army.. in Afghanistan, something that is on paper is never like the real thing in life. I was sent into zones where sometimes I watched half of my men get killed because we were ambushed or out maneuvered. I know that what is on a sheet of paper is not always set in stone or telling the truth that something will work.. or it happened the way it did." Will covered his eyes with a hand as he took some deep breaths before letting air out in a quiet sigh as he looked back out the window.
Nate rolled his eyes and tried to be as patient as he could with Will. Nate Cross was not exactly know for being a patient man. He was always quick to his temper and more often than not, was sorely tempted to shoot his own partners. Thankfully it never came down to that or he would have been stripped of his badge a long time ago.
As will went on about Afghanistan, Nate arched a brow at him. "That.. wasn't entirely my point, Will.. I just mean that.. No matter how thorough everyone tries to be. Information always gets left out. It's just human nature to miss things. I cant put my finger on it but.. I think something is missing from one of those files. Might be something trivial but I want to look into it. And I know we're not exactly 'buddies'.. But I trust you."
They drove for about 10 minutes before Nate finally stopped in front of a cemetery. "You can come with if you like.. I wont be long.. just... wishing my sister happy birthday" he didn't really give will a chance to reply as he stepped out of the car. Nate didn't like talking about Nadine. It was a painful memory. But there was something about Will that he couldn't help but connect with.
He laid a single rose against the tombstone and stood there in silence for a moment. He felt so angry. Angry that he hadn't been there to save Nadine his his drunk of a step-father had beaten the girl to the point of breaking her ribs and puncturing her lungs. He clenched his fist to the point his knuckles turned white. Even though the man was long since dead, He hated Riordan. The man who had caused the accident that killed his mother.. and then killed his sister.
He sighed rolling his shoulders with an agitated twitch. "I remember the promise I made, kid. And I promise I'll stop him. That French son of a.." he cut himself off. He wasn't about to swear in front of his sister's grave. "Don't worry, Nadine. He's going to pay for the things he's done." His hand subconsciously trailed to the old stab wound in his ribs. The day he had so nearly taken Rio into custody.
He finally placed his hand on the tomb stone and smiled "Happy Birthday, Nadine" and he made his way back to the car, giving Will an apologetic glance but said nothing.
Will finally looked to Nate as the car came to a stop in the cemetery."You can come with if you like.. I wont be long.. just... wishing my sister happy birthday"
William nodded"Alright. I think a little fresh air will do some good I think. I will be waiting by the car." William grabbed the door handle and opened the door as he undid his seat belt. Stretching his arms as he came to a stand. William looked over the car to Nate.
Sighing quietly, he decided to not be nosy and turned away. Leaning against the car, William crossed his arms over his chest as he cleared his throat. Waiting patiently for Nate to finish his business with the grave he was at, William wondered if what everyone was saying at Headquarters about Nate being emotionless was wrong.
Hearing footsteps that were approaching the car, looking over he saw Nate walking over. He saw the apologetic look as his partner got into the car. Opening his side door, Will slipped inside, looking to Nate as he buckled himself in,"Are you alright?"
Nate slipped into the driver's sear and kept his eyes fixed forward. He finally cleared his throat and nodded in reply to Will's question. “Yeah..... Yeah, I'll be fine. Nothing a good stuff drink wont be able to fix at the end of the day.” He started up the car and pulled away from the cemetery. He needed to change the subject before Nate went into the melancholy depressive state. Without looking down, Nate tapped the folder resting in the seat between them. “Open that up for me, will ya? There's a few possible leads in there that I wont to stop by. Where's our first stop?”
Nate let Will give him the directions to their first destination. Nate leaned forward and lifted a brow skeptically as he looked up at what looked like an old retirement home. This didn't sit well with Nate. Even if whoever they were going to talk to did know Rio, the fact that this person was an old codger and probably didn't have that sharp of a memory. “Let's... Make this quick, alright, Will?”
“Open that up for me, will ya? There's a few possible leads in there that I wont to stop by. Where's our first stop?”
William looked to the folder that was right between them, without a glance to the other man, he picked the folder up and opened it up. He skimmed through the data for a moment, taking in the information and changing it into a mental map to where they were going, "Alright it will be a left turn right at the next light."
The man kept his eyes peeled on the window shield, "Alright and left at the next corner followed by another left at the first light." He looked down to the folder again, "And the building will be on the right side." William looked out to the right, "Right here.." William pointed to the building.
“Let's... Make this quick, alright, Will?”
William looked over to Nate, "Alright.. I doubt this bloke will remember much anyways." William looked over to Nate as he closed the car door. He then looked up to the building, "Do you think the caretakers will allow us to speak to him?"
"Alright.. I doubt this bloke will remember much anyways... Do you think the caretakers will allow us to speak to him?"
Nate shrugged somewhat lamely, arching a brow at the building once more. This wasn't just a place for the elderly. There was a rather young woman sitting on a garden area, obviously one of the patients as she had on a long gray robe and.... bunny slippers and was rocking slightly in her seat. Not a Elderly placement... A Mental Hospital. “Oh well ain't tha just fuckin' peachy.” The Irish accent slipping in his annoyance. Nate didn't bother to correct it. “We're dealin' with a nutter.”
The two of them made their way up the path and into the ward. Nate was seriously starting to get a bad feeling about this place. In a far corner, an old man was rocking in a wheelchair mumbling incoherently about invasions and the end of the world. Nate made a deliberate attempt to keep eye contact to a minimum as he made his way to the desk. “We're here to see Alexi Zhirov.. He around?”
The attendant promptly stopped what she was doing, looking up from the computer and stared at him as if she couldn't believe the words that had just come from the man's mouth. “Y.. yeah.. Are you Family or friends? Alexi never gets visitors.” Nate very plainly reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a badge. “Private Investigators”
“Oh... You're here about the Keats person then?”
“Something like that, yeah.”
“Alexi talks about him a lot. He's that guy on the news isn't he?”
Nate didn't answer her. The receptionist looked sheepishly to Will for a moment before finally nodding and moving over to grab a hand radio, calling for someone. “Ethan? We have visitors that are going to be heading the Ward Nine” there was static and a vague response when the girl nodded and set down the radio and pointed towards a set of double doors. “Alright.. through those doors, all the way down to the hall.. Very last set of doors to your right.. Ethan will be waiting for you”
Nate nodded and patted Wills shoulder and headed towards the doors.
William adjusted his coat as he looked from Nate to the building, he observed that there were people that appeared to be mental. So he guessed that this was a mental hospital that the man they were going to be talking to was at. William started to wonder just how mental this bloke was going to be. Looking to his partner he shrugged lightly, before following him. He looked to each of the people that they passed, most of them appeared to just have some depression while others seemed to have lost their marbles to a certain degree. The detective did feel bad for them, but what could he do really?
William had no idea about what the bloke meant by an invasion or the end of the world, he was not even sure if he believed in alien life. He has never seen an alien so to him they were just a myth. The detective followed Nate inside, keeping his hands in his pockets. He kept his gaze ahead to who appeared to be a caretaker as she walked up to them and started asking Nate some questions.
He looked from Nate to the caretaker and smiled lightly, "It will just be for a moment. It's important that we speak to Alexi so that we can get one step closer to this Keats before he kills again. Just do as Detective Cross asks please, this will go a lot smoother if you allow us to question Alexi. We will not harm him." He sighed some as the receptionist seemed to listen to the both of them and picked up her radio. William looked to his partner as Nate patted him on the shoulder before walking off. William immediately followed Nate.
