Gretchen is average in terms of height and weight. She's thin, not particularly tall, with wiry muscles. There's nothing outstanding or incredibly memorable when it comes to her body. No tattoos or piercings (with the exception of her ears).

Her face is a different story. Gretchen has been called masculine plenty of times in the past, due to her strong jaw and long nose. She's able to ignore those snide comments. Her smile is one of her best features anyway, bright and wide. Unfortunately, she very rarely smiles that broad, genuine smile that her mother loves so much.

Gretch once had a shopping addiction that would see her buying hundreds of designer pieces that she would never wear. It was something that began when she got her first paycheck from Torchwood. Since then, she has sought help and sticks to wearing comfortable, sporty clothing that allows her to move easily. These sort of clothes also allowed her to stay cool in the stupidly hot Australian climate. (She did keep one nicer piece of clothing from her addict days, this jacket.)

Personality:

Not many people like Gretchen when they first meet (and then, after that, not at all). She's incredibly decisive and bossy, doing what she has to do to get her way. She's not afraid to physically intimidate someone (which is hard when you're short), or remind them of bad decisions they've made in the past, or flirt her way to the top. She means well, she really does, but she only means well for the team she's working with. When she needs something, it's for a reason.

The thing that most people find admirable about her is her punctuality and organization. She's always fifteen minutes early. She will clean if she has nothing else to do. She will poke at you if you have somewhere you should be. She neat and tidy and she does what needs to be done.

But then, like any other human being, she can have her slower days. These days are usually Sundays, because she doesn't have to work on Sundays. These are the few precious hours when she lets herself be lethargic and lazy (but not messy, no).

History:

Gretchen had a fairly average upbringing. Her parents are both dentists, she has a younger sister and two older brothers, she went to a public school, passed with slightly higher-than-average grades, then went to university to study business (then, subsequently, dropped out of university to work). Life has been kind to her, for the most part. She may have lost all four of her grandparents within one year, or she might have accidentally run her sister's cat over on her first driving test, but she can't say that anything life shatteringly bad has happened.

Gretchen joined Torchwood 9 (the eastern-most of the two Australian bases) after she was hired as a temporary receptionist. Her incredible organization skills and her fondness for "light tidying" won her over with the rest of the crew and landed her the job. Initially, they were going to guide her gently into the aline-catching business, but she'd already rearranged their paperwork (so that it was actually in alphabetical order) and already knew what they all did for a living.

That was seven years ago. Since then, Gretch has played a key role in connecting Torchwood 9 with other bases around the world. In Australia, she has an assistant that helps keep things running while she's overseas on official business.

Additional medical information:

Allergic to Coca Cola and bees. Definitely has some form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Other:

• When she's stressed, which is often, she has a habit of playing with her mouth. It's something she developed as a child, probably an extension from having dentists for parents.
  
• She always has her phone with her, linked to her home number, her mobile number, and the Torchwood 9 number. All calls, if they're not answered after five rings, are redirected to her.
