Physical Description: Sumiko is of average height for a Japanese girl, topping off at a petite fife foot and two inches. She's lean but with a bit of muscle tone to her legs from jogging and enjoying long walks. Her skin is a like almond tone, with bright brown eyes peering out from under dark hair. Her hair is long and silky soft, bangs cut straight above at her eyebrows. She normally wears it long but will sometimes pull it into a loose bun or ponytail.
Her likes to keep her clothes simple. Loose and comfortable tee shirts that often hang off one shoulder, revealing a brightly colored tank top underneath. Light colored jeans or pastel shorts and equally brightly colored Converse sneakers. If she has to attend a formal function, her manner of dress can still be rather carefree while somehow managing to be elegant and refined.
Personality: Sumiko is a genuinely warm and kind-hearted girl despite her upbringing. She tries to believe the best in people although her sisters have both tried to instil into the young girl that she needs to remain constantly on guard. She feels that her sisters believe that her kindness is a vulnerability, but she doesn’t allow that to change her perspective of the people around her. She has the ability to bring out the best in others by her firm belief that she should believe the best in people until she had definitive proof not to.
Although Sumiko likes to play the part of the naïve and innocent child, there is a very perceptive young woman underneath the surface. She constantly soaks in information about people and her surroundings that are personal to her. She might note that someone has the same type of runner’s shoes that she does, or that someone’s feet are covered in dirt. With this warehouse of information tucked neatly inside her head, Sumiko may sometimes make remarks that are startling accurate and perspective.
Sumiko is a bit of an idealist. She has in her head a picture perfect idea of the way that things should be. Although she values and trusts her sister, Rin, and wouldn’t dream of criticizing her, Sumiko’s perfect world doesn’t have a place for her iron-fist rule. She cherishes security and kindness. She respects her family’s tradition of upholding the ‘business’.
She needs positive feedback from others. If she senses that one of her sisters are disappointed with her, Sumiko becomes greatly discourages. She withdraws into herself and begins to imagine everything going wrong. When she’s stressed out, she feels inadequate to take care of everything that needs to be taken care of. She does a great deal of running when she’s stressed out, although she jogs daily, she spends an hour or two longer when under a lot of stress. This is the biggest indicator to her sisters that she has something on her mind.
She takes on a lot of responsibility and she can be counted on to follow through. However, her compassion and friendliness often turns against her, as Sumiko hasn’t quite learned the art of saying ‘no’. This leads to the poor girl to becoming over-worked, over-burdened, and over-frustrated. She doesn’t like to tell others when she’s drowning in a pool of never-ending responsibilities. Instead, Sumiko turns to the outlet of running.
History: Unlike her two elder sisters, the beginning of Sumiko’s life was met with scorn from her father. Sumiko’s birth resulted in the death of her own mother and she could never get over the emotional scarring left by her father, who blamed the child personally. The first few years of her life were only made livable in the care of her eldest sister, Rin, who had taken over the role of her mother.
Despite her father’s cold indifference towards her, Sumiko grew up a bright, happy, and cheerful child, although she still took her mother’s death quite personally. The fact that her older sister, Rin, took over raising her helped to ease the guilt. Rin lovingly brought her up and raised her as her own. Due to Rin’s doting on her as a child, Sumiko never learned how to properly fend for herself. This made her a very easy target for the family’s copious amount of enemies.
This was exemplified when Sumiko was four years old. She was kidnapped from the family after playing outside and chasing butterflies. The opium dealer left a note for the Morisato family to pay him a high ransom. She would make a very valuable ‘entertainer’. Her father shrugged it off and told his daughter not to waste their resources looking for the child.
Rin ignored her father’s order to ignore the note and enlisted the help of both the Reaper and the nine year old Shizu to chase after the opium dealer. They found her relatively easily – just a small-time opium dealer with a grudge against their father for owning the monopoly on imports and exports, but lacking in the brain cells to think of a proper revenge. A few bloodbaths later, the Reaper and her sister brought the youngest Morisato back to the estate. Sumiko still has nightmares from the sight of Shizu and Armand murdering the opium dealer and his men.
Rin reprimanded the young girl, insisting that she will have to learn how to defend herself if she wants to be let out of the house again. After the incident with the opium dealer, Rin wouldn’t let Sumiko out of her sight. Unfortunately, the youngest sister did not seem to be able to learn how to protect herself. Or, rather, unwilling to learn. She stayed inside under the close watch of her sisters and the Reaper until she turned eleven.
Her sister eventually decided that she would not be able to grow and defend herself if she was not given the opportunity to do so. The eldest Morisato sister equipped Sumiko with a Taser and informed her how to use it… by demonstrating it. Although it wasn’t the nicest way to teach someone how to guard themselves, it certainly got the point across to the young Sumiko.
After giving Sumiko the Taser, Rin allowed her to leave the house after telling one of her sisters where she would be. Sumiko used this chance to go jogging daily. It was on these jogs that she tried to meet a few friends. Once Rin found out that her little sister was trying to befriend strangers in a park, she called Sumiko to the top floor of the estate and told her that she can’t have any friends because she shouldn’t trust strangers so easily.
To prove her point, Rin pushed Sumiko down the flight of stairs to reinforce to the young teenager that she should not trust people. During the fall, Sumiko broke her arm and elbow in three places. She also developed her fear of heights from the stairs.
Additional medical information: Slight asthma issues. Always keeps her inhaler with her.
