It was entirely too quiet. Above the monotonous wails of traffic, the chatter of people looming in the city below, the torrential downpour of rain, all she heard was silence. The Magpie was clinging casually to the spire of a tower, looking down over the city from her vantage point like some protective sentinel. She really had nothing better to do anymore. Rio was gone. Granted, yes, her children were still around, but her life had been so delicately intertwined in being there for Rio, that when he finally died, the woman she was before died with him. Peaceful, passive, meek Magpie was just a memory, now.
She waiting for something... Anything. She huffed a bored sigh as pale green eyes loomed over the city. She leaned back against the spire of the tower crossing her arms, the black slick leather which she was wearing creaked in the rain. The dampness on her face, she couldn't tell it it was entirely the rain of if it was tears. Her eyes burned as if she'd been crying. She calmly wiped her face and stared out over the city. How long had it been since Rio had left her a widow? How long after that before she elected to regenerate hoping that, but some miraculous fluke, she would forget everything like she did the first time she regenerated? She had lost count of the years that had rolled by.
She didn't want to forget Rio or the many years she'd spent by his side, the joy of bringing his children into the world, laughing at his childish antics. She didn't want to forget but she couldn't bear the pain of his loss either. In a way, she was thankful she hadn't forgotten. So many wonderful memories. A smirk finally tugged on her lips as she stared down at the streets of France. Rio had despised England, be he had stayed for her and the children. So, in his honor, Maggie had taken to traveling the world. She had also finally learned French.
Finally, something caught her attention. The sound was distant at first but steadily grew louder. A materializing TARDIS. She rolled her eyes. Only one TARDIS she knew of made that sound because the Idiot Doctor refused to admit he was leaving the Parking Breaks engaged. The last time she saw him was shortly after her recent regeneration and he tried explaining to her that he was her father. The Magpie, of course, wouldn't listen. It had just been too much to take in. But now that the initial shock was out of her system... Okay, sure.. Fine.. The Doctor was her father.. But that didn't change the fact that she saw the man as an irresponsible childish lunatic with an antique for a TARDIS.
Whether The Doctor was looking for her intentionally or not, The Magpie decided to pop down and see what the hell the Mad Man with a box was doing in Paris France. She casually stepped off the end of the tower and adjusted something on her belt. It was a reverse polarity simulator.. A Gravity belt, basically. She walked down the side of the tower and stepped onto the sidewalk and knocked on the TARDIS door. “Oy! You're in a 'No Parking' zone, Doctor!” She stared expectantly at the door, pushing dark ringlets of soaked red hair out of her face.
The Doctor was aiming for London to pick up Clara when he noticed on the monitor that he had missed his target, again. He wondered how many times he would be late to pick Clara up, and how many times he would have to think of an apology, that of course wouldn't work and he would be hearing how irresponsible he is and that he should buy a better watch because evidently my current one doesn't work. He was about to check where he was when he heard a knock on his door followed by a irritated voice. "Oy! You're in a "No Parking" zone Doctor!" Curious The Doctor walked to the front door and opened, it leaning out. He noticed that he was somewhere in France, and that it was raining quite heavily, and standing in front of him was a rather angry woman in a leather jacket, and red hair. He stepped out of the Tardis to talk to the wet angry woman, politely. "Sorry about that, I was actually aiming for London to pick up my friend, but EVIDENTLY, i had somewhere better to be!" The Doctor gave a evil glare towards the tardis, then looked back to the red head. " I didn't land on any one did I? Because if I did i'am really sorry about that. Happens sometimes, one time I accidentally landed on someones cat, I felt bad for the owner, but I was really that up set about the cat. Evil little beasts." The Doctor paused for a second suddenly remembering that she had called him Doctor when she banged on his door.
"Hang on, did you call me Doctor? How did you know my name? Who are you?" The Doctor looked the women up and down trying to figure out who she was. He noticed that she was wearing a gravity belt. But that didn't really mean anything, it just meant that she could be a time agent, who got a cheap piece of technology. The Doctor took out his Sonic screwdriver and soniced the women. He flicked his sonic open to look at the readings. What he saw almost made his hearts stop. " It can't be."
“Sorry about that, I was actually aiming for London to pick up my friend, but EVIDENTLY, i had somewhere better to be!"
Well.. This wasn't who she expected to see. It was definitely the same TARDIS, but this was not The Doctor... Was it? The Doctor she remembered was tall, with spiked up bangs mangled up into some fashionable attempt at a fauxhawk, and a blue pinstripe suit and red trainers. She arched a dark auburn brow at him as he rambled on, apologizing and wondering if anyone had been flattened. Well, he certainly rambled like The Doctor. She sighed a little, rubbing her temples. Must have been a new regeneration. “Doctor, You're rambling”
"Hang on, did you call me Doctor? How did you know my name? Who are you?"
Those pale green eyes rolled slightly as she leaned against the TARDIS, trying not to chuckle at him. Either it had been a really long time since he'd seen her last or.. He'd forgotten a few things since his regeneration. Maybe this was for the best if he didn't remember her. She was about to dismiss herself as just someone who made a lucky guess when he began passing the sonic screwdriver over her. “Doctor, Really. MUST you do that?” she fired off slapping his hand away.
"It can't be."
“Yes well obviously it can. So.. are we going to just stand out here in the rain or are we going to go somewhere dry for a more civilized conversation... and... By the way.. What ARE you wearing, Doctor?” she inquired as she looped her finger curiously into the suspender and tugged it a bit. “Suspenders, Doctor? Really? Haven't you ever heard of a belt?” and she let it go, slapping it against his shirt.
The Doctor couldn't believe after so many years that he had finally found Maggie! He wanted to say something anything! But he just couldn't it's like his brain stopped working as soon as he read the readings on his sonic. So he just watched her comment on his cool attire, and ask to go talk somewhere dry. " Yes well obviously it can. So...are we going to just going to stand out here in the rain or are we going to go somewhere dry for a more civilized conversation.... and... By the way.. What ARE you wearing?" Maggie put on of her fingers under the Doctors suspenders. " Suspenders Doctor? Really? Haven't you ever heard of a belt?" Then she let it go, so it could slap rather painfully back on his shirt. Which thankfully brought him out of his shock. "OW! And what do you mean by My suspenders, suspenders are cool!" The Doctor then opened the Tardis door and beckoned Maggie in. " After you."
“OW! And what do you mean by My suspenders, suspenders are cool!"
She arched a thin auburn brow as she looked up at him and had to shake her head to keep from chuckling at him. He seemed so different from his last incarnation. He reminded her of her son, Leon. A bit childish and always quick to defend his odd fashion choices. “What ever floats your boat, Doctor.” She hesitated as he motioned for her to come inside.
“After you."
She bit her lip and shook her head as she ran her fingers through her thickly curled red hair, sweeping the rain from her face. “How about we get something to eat.. My treat. I guess we have some catching up to do, yeah?” She offered a halfhearted smile. She normally wouldn't have bothered with him. Her husband had made it quite clear his dislike of the man. And her father-in-law, Tomaz didn't have a very high opinion of him either. But... In the end, what was she if she didn't have family?
“How about we get something to eat.. My treat. I guess we have some catching up to do, yeah?” She offered a halfhearted smile. “Come on. There's a pub just down street here.” The Doctor noticed that something was wrong with her, so not wanting to cause any trouble, he stepped back out of the Tardis and closed the door. He straightened his Bow Tie, and motioned for Maggie to go first. He then followed walking beside her. " So Maggie how have you been? I see that you regenerated again. You look nice in red hair. I still don't know why I haven't regenerate ginger yet. I've been every other hair color possible! Just not ginger." The Doctor kicked a rock on the side walk. " Your name's still Maggie isn't it? Or have you changed it again?" the Doctor stopped where he was and turned to face Maggie. " No wait don't tell me! Your name is.... Scarlet, wait no! Stormageden dark lord of all, wait no that was alfy. Your new name is Nancy!" The Doctor looked at Maggie hopefully. " Okay i admit i'am not that good at guessing names." The Doctor continued walking beside Maggie, or Nancy, what ever her new name might be!
The Doctor stopped again this time facing Maggie and putting his hands on her shoulders. " Nancy, or whatever your new name is. I'am sorry about anything i might of done to you in the past to make you upset. And i'am hoping that we can put that in the past, and just start fresh. Be cause I do care about you." The Doctor stroked her hair gently, he then took his hands away and continued walking, awkwardly.
She shrugged a little lamely when she saw the look on his face. “Oh, No offense, Doctor.. I.. I don't time travel any more. Too much temptation. Too many things I'd be too tempted to change. Thing's that I know shouldn't change but.. I would” She was referring to losing her husband. It had been ten years since that day but that was still a fresh wound for her. They began walking towards the cafe she'd mentioned when he made a comment about her bright red hair and if she'd changed her name.
“You know... that's not a bad idea. Maybe a little name change would be nice” She listened as he rattled off a barrage of odd names and she could only smirk at him. “Rio used to call me 'Luciole'.. I think... Lucy would be a good change.” Okay so she still wasn't quite letting go of the sentimentality of the names Rio had given her. After all, it was Rio who had named her Maggie when he learned she went by Magpie.
She smiled weakly when he apologized for any wrongs he might of done and she shrugged lamely and turned her face away “Maybe this wasn't such a good idea. Everyone dies or leaves, Doctor. Caring isn't an advantage” The tone in her voice suggested she didn't completely believe that. “Incidentally, Doctor. The past doesn't matter.. I don't even really remember you.. Bullet to the head will do that.” and she led him into the cafe and absently stared at her hands and she claimed a table for them.
“Maybe this wasn't such a good idea. Everyone dies or leaves, Doctor. Caring isn't an advantage” The Doctor looked at Maggie. He didn't really believe that she meant what she said. He knew that when you lose a loved one, you never want to be happy again. You think if your happy with someone else, you might forget who you lost. But you never forget them, no matter what you do, you never forget them. “Incidentally, Doctor. The past doesn't matter.. I don't even really remember you.. Bullet to the head will do that.” Bullet to the head? He really had missed a lot of her life hadn't he.
He sat down at one of the tables, and looked at Maggie. " Maggie. What happened?" He wasn't really good with reading people's emotions, but he could tell that there was something seriously wrong with Maggie.
“Lucy” she softly corrected. She needed to let the name go. “And.. it's a long story.” She looked up at him and she could tell by the look on his face, he wasn't in a particularly big hurry and was probably going to harass her for answers. “My husband's dead, alright?” she replied a little hotly. Rio had never liked The Doctor. Any time Rio had gotten tangled up with him, he'd either been yelled at for something he didn't even do, or got seriously hurt.
She folded her arms on the table and rested her head on her arms. She could feel a headache gnawing at the back of her head. “I don't suppose you've got anything for a migraine, would you, 'Old Man'?”
The Doctor took one of Lucy's hands and looked at her with a sorrowful expression. " Lucy I'm sorry." He didn't know what else to say but that. The Doctor and Rio never got along well anyway, but that didn't mean he wouldn't be sad to learn that he had died.
“I don't suppose you've got anything for a migraine, would you, 'Old Man'?” The Doctor stiffened a little at the 'Old Man' remark, but he quietly took out a small pill and handed it to Lucy. " That should get rid of it quickly. But you should eat something first."
"That should get rid of it quickly. But you should eat something first."
She took it and popped it into her mouth with a sigh, not bothering to drink anything to swallow it. “Not your fault, Doctor. Everything ends in it's own time, I suppose.” she replied softly, folding her arms and resting her head on the table. “I'm sorry.. Things are just so.. different now.. How do you do it, Doctor?” she asked, finally lifting her head to look at him. “How do you cope with losing people you care about?”
She bit her lip as she passed the heel of her palm against her watering eyes. She wasn't about to cry about Rio in front of him. She swallowed thickly “How do you stay sane? I.. I feel like I'm losing myself”
The Doctor thought for a moment, how did he do it? How did he cope with all the loss he's had in his life? The real answer was he didn't. Not fully anyhow. On the outside he might look cool, and collected.... wait no that was his eighth incarnation. On the outside he might look carefree, always happy, but on the inside he was sad. Terribly sad. Years worth of pain and loss collected inside, locked inside to the public eye.
The Doctor quietly listened to what else she had to say. he chuckled softly, how did he stay sane. " To be honest. I lost my sanity a long time ago." he gently reached over and took her hands in his. "Mag--Lucy. I know its hard losing thoughs close to you. To tell you the truth you never really get over it. You will always remember them, even when you think forgetting them will make the pain go away. But its those memories that make it all worth it, the good and the bad..." The Doctor stopped talking, noticing for the first time, that he was crying. He slowly took his hands away, not bothering to wipe away the tears that were flowing freely down his cheeks.
She slowly lifted her head up from the table, a thick tangle of dark red curls shadowing those dark green eyes. They were wet with tears. She offered a faintest hint of a smile as he reassured her that it was the memories of loved ones that made everything worth while. With a slow movement of her hand, she reached across the table to rest her fingers lightly on the back of his hand before reaching up to pass a thumb under his eye, easing a tear away.
"So much time has been stolen from us. Time that no time machine can restore. It almost seems cruel" she said softly. She was referring to the fact that he was the father she never got to know. The Nomad had been the only father figure in her life that she could remember. And Rio had really been the only other man in her life. And while Rio had never had a fond word in regard to the Doctor... He was family.
Her head didn't feel much better but she was feeling a little less edgy around him. "We're you on your way to meet someone? You sounded a bit surprised to see me? I.. I dont mean to cut in." she replied with downcast eyes.
The Doctor smiled sadly at Lucy. “The curse of the Time Lords. We have all this power, but not even that can give us back lost time.” And it was the truth. The Doctor had missed out on so much of Maggie’s life, that it just wasn't fair. She was his daughter, and he hadn't even gotten to watch her grow up. He didn't even get to see her a lot after he found out about her. Although, that was mostly his fault.
The Doctor looked confused for a second at Maggies question. Then he remembered, he was going to pick up Clara… That could wait, its not like she was going anywhere. He smiled at her, gently lifting her chin up with his finger. “Nope, just wasn't expecting to bump into you. Guess we have the TARDIS to thank for that.”
“Nope, just wasn't expecting to bump into you. Guess we have the TARDIS to thank for that.”
She smiled faintly as he lifted her chin. She appreciated the gesture but still wasn't really ready to let him in. To let anyone in. She gently leaned her face away from his hand and stared down at the table. Was she really going to just shut everyone out forever? While she liked the idea of not getting attached only to lose someone, she couldn't deny that she was lonely. "Yes well, TARDISes are notorious for having plans of their own."
She then lifted her face and smirked at him. "It's almost as if she doesn't trust your judgment, Doctor." she teased. Okay so it was a weird start, but taking personal jabs at him actually made her fell a little better, even though she didn't mean them.
