Luckily she was so startled when the rope gave sudden slack that she only ripped in an inhale instead of screaming. it wouldn't have helped their situation. She dropped perhaps half a meter before the rope checked tight again. She clutched in gratitude to the wall, hearing a quiet apology from above.
"Huya." She agreed with equal mute as he, sounding tolerant as she let go her death grip and started clambering down again. She was shaking by the time she hit the sand below, but she'd made good time and scrambled out of that rope quick as she could, giving it a double pull for him to let him know she was free. Panting on her knees in the sand now, she looked up anxiously.
The Doctor let out a sigh of relief when he felt the double tug. At least that part was done with. The Doctor quickly looked at his surroundings to try and find something sturdy enough to tie his end of the rope on. Just his luck, nothing. With a sigh the Doctor let the rope fall over the ledge, and down to Sarah. He swung his long legs over the ledge, and lowered himself over. He looked down at Sarah who was practically just a speck in the distance.
" The things I do for Sarah Jane Smith." He muttered to himself as he started, the long climb down.
She watched, biting her lip as she watched the small figure of the Doctor first disappear, then reappear and swing him self over the edge. He was so far up, the rope on her end wasn't even wiggling yet. That is when she heard a sound in sand. She whipped around and saw the smouldering ship in the distance. Still not seeing anything, she slipped behind a rock that sprang up like a dark iceberg from the ocean of sand in the opposite direction of the sound she'd heard. Silent as she could, which was silent indeed now that she wasn't breathing and didn't even have her boots.
Yes, she could hear footsteps in the sand. She closed her eyes for a moment in realization. The Doctor was helpless on the rope. If whomever that was came any closer, she'd have to try to draw them off before they noticed him up there.
The Doctor began his decent down, going from foothold, to foothold with ease. Which was surprising sense he usually tripped on thin air when walking or running. But he guessed in this body climbing was his forte. He chanced a glance down to see how Sarah was doing. He noticed that she had ran to hide behind a large rock, and followed her line of site. Once he saw the ship in the horizon, he quickened his pace climbing down.
The next time he glanced down, he saw the drivers of the ship had already parked, and had begun searching the area below him. He desperately flattened himself out on the cliff ledge, hoping that they wouldn't spot him, nor Sarah.
She was calculating. She'd been watching the Doctor climb down. If she tried to draw the eye of whomever was headed their way, she wasn't certain she could evade him long enough for the Doctor to climb down. The broad shape drew near, and she wondered how long it would be before they spotted the almost helpless Doctor.
One could almost hear the gears turning in her head. She reached down, picked up marble sized rock and chucked it as far and as hard as she could, hoping to hit the protruding stone there, and not loose it silently to the sand. In the end it took her three small rocks, but she managed it. The form slowed, then turned toward the rock. She pressed in close to the large jag of stone beside her, remembering that if she could see the creature in the space suit, then it could see her if it turned.
The Doctor watched from his position on the cliff, as Sarah tried to draw the form's attention away from himself. He watched the form walked over to where the stone hit the cliff face. The Doctor could climb his way down quickly, but then he would be in full view of the form. And he couldn't stay up here forever. That only left one option left. The doctor turned his body around, so that his back was to the cliff face and he was facing the open area in front of him. He then jumped away from the cliff face, landing on top of the form below.
Pain shot through his body as he hit the figure then the ground. Quickly the Doctor jumped up making sure the figure was unconscious, then walked over to Sarah. Or as much as one could walk after jumping 50 feet to the ground.
" Sarah are you alright?" He knew it was a silly question, but he still needed to make sure she didn't hurt herself climbing down, or any other way.
She played cat and mouse with the thing for a while, not caring for the bulk of it or its predatory aggression as it searched. The pebble ploy had only worked once. After the second stone, it was looking for the thrower. Her.
She considered herself clever, but it only took a couple of minutes before Potato Head spotted her. She froze; stumbled back, her heels finding stone and she tripped back thumping against it. It stalked toward her drawing it's weapon. Even as she drew breath to scream, something large and dark feel from above, taking it down with the sound of body smacking body.
It was the Doctor, and he'd done the impossible just when she needed him to. Again. Looking as shaken as she felt, he lurched at her after hauling himself to his feet. His face loomed large, a familiar worry in his eyes. She was still rather wide-eyed stunned and 'holding up' the rock. She doesn't answer right away, eyes on the downed figure, giving a vigorous nod to say she was fine. She blinked twice before yanking her eyes away and looking wide eyed at him.
"You're mad!" she insisted, breaking into a smile. "Fine thanks to you!" Her eyes raked him, her face a sudden frown.
"But are you alright?" She gave him a little swat on the arm. "Scare me half to death when you do that!" She bites her lip.
"Maybe we should raid him? It?" Were there girl potato heads?
The Doctor rubbed his arm, where Sarah had slapped him.
" I'm sorry, it's the only thing I could think of at the moment. At least it worked, eh?" The Doctor gave Sarah a small smile. Then looked over at the limp body of the Sontarion. He strode over to it, ignoring the pain that it caused , and knelled beside him.
" I have another idea..." He looked over at the ship the sontarion had used to get here, then back at Sarah. If they could get him back into his ship, then they could make it look like he was bringing the Doctor and Sarah into custody. He straightened back up, picking the Sontarion up by the shoulders.
" Sarah can you help me please." He gestured with his head towards the ship, then to the Sontarion.
" Quickly." Sontarions were surprisingly heavy when limp...
The Doctor was sparky enough in return her inquire that she took a deep breath. He was well enough for that though she could see how he still shifted uncomfortably against the pain of his landing. She was smiling anyway. This wasn't going very well, but things going poorly with the Doctor was still a world better than things going fairly well without him. So far, they were holding together.
"Another idea? Is it a good idea?" She asked a little skeptically as she ran around to the creatures feet. She groaned a complaint as she hefted the thing's stout and booted feet.
It was not the face of her Doctor, but by the wild imp in his eye, she could never mistake him.
Longish pale straight locks were as boisterous as his curls had been before. His lips as tender with hope and determination.
The Doctor lifted the Sontarion up and into the drivers seat, propping his head up and fastening its seat belt. He tried his best to make it look like the Sontarion was fully conscious, even though it looked like he was slighting drooping to one side. Oh well. He dusted his hands off on his pants, and turned to explain his.... semi-genius plan to Sarah. "We're going to make it look like our mister potato friend here's taking us into custody. I'll fly the freighter with my Sonic, if you'll try and make sure he doesn't fall over. We want it to look as real as possible."
The Doctor jumped into the back seat with a child like excitement, quickly fastening his own seat belt, and pointing his Sonic screw driver at the engine. He pressed the button on the side and it momentarily let out a mechanical whining sound, before slowly going to a inaudible moaning sound. He politely waited for Sarah to board the freighter and get situated, before turning on the engine with a graceful flick of his sonic. Almost like a conductor at a orchestra, the Doctor set about the main controls. Flicking his sonic this way and that. Turning on the lights here, and doing other tasks that needed to be done before setting off. With a final flick of the wrist, the freighter lurched forward towards the Sontarions base in the far horizon.
His work done for now, the Doctor leaned back in his seat with a smug smile. He probably could of set the coordinates and what not by hand. But where was the fun in that? He turned his head slightly towards Sarah. Sense he'd arrived here,he hadn't really had a chance to catch up with her. Sense they were a good thirty or so minutes from their destination, he thought there was no harm in a little conversation. "It really is great to see you Sarah Jane." He paused for as second looking her up and down. To him she hadn't aged a bit, it probably hadn't been long sense she'd traveled with him for her. But he wasn't quite sure. "So how have you been? Still a journalist? Wait not don't answer that. Of course you are. My Sarah Jane Smith, the journalist." He scooted towards her a bit more so he didn't have to speak as loudly over the engine."Or should I say, Ambassidor of Earth. Talk spreads around the universe quickly." He smiled warmly at her, glad that they finally had a chance to talk without risking death... for now.
Apparently, the Doctor had lost his mind. However, she suspected that had happened long before she ever met him, and rather liked him that way. However, it did make him quite unpredictable. The last thing she expected as part of this rescue would be to get put right back into a spaceship, flown through the battle again, and taken back to the ship she'd started in. They'd have to though, wouldn't they? They wouldn't get very far very fast without the TARDIS.
It was with much grunting and unexpected slapstick that they managed to get the Sontarn into the pilot's seat. Thank goodness the Doctor gave her a job she could manage. She knew exactly where they kept the binders in these darn ships. She got some out and bound the broad fellow here and there while the Doctor fussed about with his own tasks. They worked like busy waiters, moving around each other with the occasional jostling, but never bumping hard enough to spill the wine. It was so easy to fall back into step with him. How many time has they danced their way through a tricky situation like this? That thought made her smile even as she had to get in close enough to smell their passenger too well.
Under the Doctor's hands, the ship warmed to life. Gravity when that-a-way she dropped into the seat beside her friend, the smile on her face irrepressible.
"You're going to fly this thing with your Sonic? You're mad!" she laughed. "And here I thought you were going to sit in our friend's lap to steer." She gave a little shake of her head, amused and amazed. What would he think of next? She was just starting to wonder at the man he'd become when suddenly he was exactly the man he'd always been. His words poured over her with that rich tone of praise that had always caught her like honey. He also correctly guessed about half her life. Or he'd been keeping an eye on her. Either way she was warmed and she felt really safe for the first time in a long time.
"Doctor, it's been amazing. Travel magazine! I've just been all over the world now. That part is safe as houses usually, my editor keeps too good an eye on me. In between stories though, I've been looking into just anything that might be of Alien origin . .after everywhere you and I went, I can almost sniff an alien in the air, Doctor. And you just never know what I'll find when I find what I'm looking for!" Her face was bright as she babbled. She'd often imagined this conversation, longed to tell him what she'd been up to just to bask in the look in his eyes. "Sometimes they just need a bit of salt or electricity, or directions to the nearest black hole. " Her smile went a bit wild. "Then of course, sometimes there is running. Oh! And just wait until you see my car! I had my MG Midget all supped up!"
She was sitting sort of sideways, socked and sandy left foot swinging.
The Doctor grinned at Sarah. “Sarah, you of all people should know that I am a mad man with a box.” He paused for a second. “ Er.. without a box.” He had forgotten that the TARDIS was resting on a space carrier above them. That left him a little underpowered at the moment, but at least he still had his sonic screwdriver! And Sarah. Can’t forget about Sarah.
The Doctor sat next to Sarah, starting at her with a fondness only the bestest of friends share. He was extremely proud of her. Battling aliens, and keeping humanity safe, it was nice to have another eye on that troublesome planet. And he could think of no one better then Sarah Jane Smith. He was especially impressed to hear about her car, it was nice to think someone was taking a pride in their vehicle like he did. When she finished, the Doctor gave her the biggest and warmest smile he could.
“Sounds like you’ve been busy.” He couldn’t just tell her that he was proud of her, that would go against everything he believed in. But he knew that Sarah could tell that he was proud of her, he didn’t need to say it. He never did.
He was grinning silly at her and it felt good. They hadn't had much time for smiling at each other yet, and his was like a sunny day. She wondered if she'd get used to the Doctor having such straight, plain teeth. Perhaps the enthusiasm of his hair made up for it though. She was becoming 'familiar with his face' as Henry Higgins did of Eliza's. His hand did some wiggling, sonic extended toward the pilot controls, most of his attention reserved for her. Clearly he could do this as easily as she could ride a horse to her mailbox. Well, not from here, but from her home, which was very far away right now. A home she hadn't thought she'd see again.
She was not interested in strapping in. With the Doctor flying, it would be unlikely she'd need it, though the occasional swoop made her brace herself with her arms between the seat in front of her and the back of the one she sat so casually skewed on. "Sounds like you've been busy." He said, and with a jolt she remembered how this all started.
"Doctor, this is a trap for you!" She grabbed hard his free arm. "I was just the bait. They didn't count on me though." she said with a bit of devious joy. "I had enough time to figure out what they've been up to!"
“A trap?” He frowned slightly thinking about it. It didn't really surprise him that the Sontarons would try to trap him, but they could of done it in a more.... subtle manner. Or at least one that didn't put one of his friends in danger. “Not much of a trap if I'm in it.” He smiled a little mischievously, before listening to the rest she had to say. If there's one thing none of his enemies had learned, was the Doctor could get out of any trap.
“And what were they up to?” This time the Doctor added mentally. He knew that they were in war at the moment, they always were. But what could be different this time that needed the Doctor out of the way? It couldn't be something too bad.. they weren't smart enough for that. Unless they had outside help that is. And even then they would still mess it up, even without the Doctor's meddling. Okay, he might be exaggerating just a tiny bit. But they weren't exactly the smartest potatoes out there.
He slowed the freighter down to a stop, turning all of his attention to Sarah. He didn't want to walk into the Sontaron base blind, he wanted a little more information and an actual plan. Well, as much of a plan as he could come up with.
She didn't bother to point out that she was also in the trap, which complicated things. She'd rather think about how amusing it was that he was confused by the lack of logic shown in putting him in a trap. Not worry, not anger, already he was trying to imagine the point of view of their currant adversary. He never started angry, it was just that sometimes he was pushed into it. And she knew for a fact that he wasn't going to like this.
She hoped he'd be glad that he and she were here to help untangle this mess. Surely the two of them could do just about anything they put their minds to. It had always been that way. It was the excitement that he was here to fix this that stirred her now as she told him the tale, wide eyed and brilliantly babbling.
"Doctor!" She spoke with her hands more freely now that the jostling was easing down. She wasn't even really worried about the flight right now. If he wasn't scared, she wouldn't be. "You must know about the Abzorbaloff?!" She could tell he did. "Well, we're in the middle of the war they're having with the Sontarans! But the Abzorbaloff were loosing, so They came to Earth and started sucking up all the soldiers and footballers and chess masters. They started taking young men who are just burning to fight something."
All of this she said rapid fire in a single breath, then dragged in another to tell the rest, having plucked at his sleeve a moment. "I dressed up as a lunch lady of course, and found out about the drugs they were pumping into prime candidates to fatten them for the 'slaughter' poor fellows! I got caught of course, by the Abzorbaloff. They were taking me back to their home world to be ingested by their top man-" She waved him off, for clearly, it hadn't happened. Breath number three just might finish the tale.
"But the Sontarans must have had a spy because they captured the ship before it ever got to the planet. They got my name out of the Abzorbaloff, and well." This is when she looked aggravated, as if she would have been any better off if she hadn't been recognized. "They know who I am, Doctor, they remember. They got all sorts of readings on me when I was tied up to that horrible rock. Which means they knew about you, too. If there is any one person in the Universe who could lead an army to beat human minds . . . . . " She trailed off ominously.
It was written all over her face that she expected him to have all the answers. Promptly. She'd been dying to know how to solve all this, and here he was right on time. How she had missed him.
