Seems she was never fast enough when it came to war fare and this time it was gonna be no different, Ace knew the second she felt the searing pain on her bicep from the gunshot wound that they were in the wrong neighborhood. “Wrong neighborhood.”
Her mind went into overdrive when she saw Sarah Jane take a more critical hit, she thought she saw it go through cleanly but she couldn’t be sure till she got her friend somewhere she could check, moving quickly to catch her friend so she didn’t fallout completely on the ground Ace tried to wrap her arm around her friends waist while moving Sarah Janes free arm around her neck “Remember what you said about your shield, can you activate it now?” she was trying to move them quickly out of sight but keeping it slow as to not cause her friend any undue pain.
"I am NOT A PROBLEM! I’m a…tactical consideration!"
All the world was ice. She'd been impaled with ice. Her face, her feet, felt burnt with ice. The only thing that was hot was the blood suddenly pouring in thin twin lines down her belly and her back.
Some organ inside of her lurched. When Ace caught her and started to move them, it was a whole new world of pain and she cried out like a child, though she knew she should not. How many gunshots had she seen? You never knew who was going to cry and who was going to be clench-jawed until the moment of truth came. This was her moment of truth, and she couldn't care less that she'd chosen the less stolid of reactions. It was no choice. She was crying.
Even so, at Ace's words, her hands flew to the device in the silk purse in her hand. With shaking hands, she fumbled it out. It fell on the ground, face up, displaying it's only button.
She cleared her throat to get some air, and a hot splatter of blood came out, surprising her. Her view altered suddenly sideways.
"Ace-" she grunted, pleading. This was it. Here she would die. Was there any chance she'd regenerate like her friend?

Ace hated that she was causing Sarah Jane so much pain but they had to move to get out of the line of fire, when the shield device slipped from Sarah Janes hands Ace had no choice but to watch it fall or risk dropping her friend.
They needed the shield though, badly so she started to reach down and grab the device but stopped when Sarah Jane cleared her throat and the splatter of blood came out, she could be moved no farther, Ace had been around enough wars and fighting to know that much on sight.
Reaching with her foot Ace tried to tap the shield to bring it up while slowly lowering Sarah Jane to the ground, "Ace-" “You’re fine, you’re going to be fine.” she hoped, she wasn’t completely able to keep the worry out of her voice, if Sarah Jane died here she’d never forgive herself.
Quickly taking off her jacket and wincing a little when she slid the sleeve off the arm that had been grazed, right down the center of a circular tattoo, half seal of Rassilon, half Gallifreyan symbol for earth, Ace gently placed the jacket over Sarah Janes wound and applied a little pressure while smiling trying to keep her friend calm “You’re not gonna die here, ok? You’re gonna go when you’re old and feeble and have had 15 grandchildren.” she held up a hand to show whoever was shooting at them that they surrendered, never taking her eyes off Sarah Janes “You hear me?”.
"I am NOT A PROBLEM! I’m a…tactical consideration!"
Somehow, Ace got her on the ground without anything else inside Sarah Jane seeming to tear. The ground felt so solid and steady. it welcomed her as she sagged onto it.
Bullets continued to fly, making odd little sizzling sounds as they ricocheted off the slightly glowing barrier of the shield. Ace had gotten the shield up. Ace would survive this, she thought and felt quite a bit better about it. Sarah Jane was feeling pretty certain about her own death, but the way Ace moved so quickly and effectively to help her made her feel good. Less good was the blood dripping down Ace's arm. Of her elbow now even, Sarah Jane could see as the woman took off her coat.
"You're good to me. " she said, right before Ace pressed her coat down. That made her cry out again, her hands batting a moment at Ace in animal panic. It took her a moment to get under control. What really nailed it was Ace's words which stopped her up short.
"Oh, Gods, Ace! Fifteen?" She groaned, she wracked with a short sharp laugh that made her skin turn another shade of milk. her lower jaw and lips were splattered with blood and somehow a smudge had gotten up beside her eye. "Just" she coughed, then pulled her best deadpan voice. "Just kill me now." If you looked, though, you could see the wicked smile in her eyes.
(((Gentle readers, it's come to my attention that SJ. saying 'Just kill me now', can be easily, shockingly, misunderstood. She's kidding. She's making a joke about the idea of having 15 grand children. Cannon has it, SJ was never over-fond of children, though one might assume her opinion changed over time.))))

"Oh, Gods, Ace! Fifteen?" Ace forced herself to put on a dopey grin, placing her hand on Sarah Janes cheek “Yes, fifteen.” she couldn’t wait for reinforcements she needed to help Sarah Jane now or she’d fear she’d loose her friend.
Looking down she moved the jacket a little to look at the wound "Just" Ace looked up at Sarah Jane "Just kill me now." Ace frowned a little and placed a hand back on the wound to keep pressure “Hey, hey don’t talk like that you’re going to be fine, you’ll see.” Gods she hopped this worked, Ace had heard of it but never actually seen a Timelord use regenerative engery to heal someone, it was dangerous and knowing her luck she probably wouldn’t be able to heal Sarah Jane completely but she’d bet she could get her to where she wouldn’t bleed to death.
“This may hurt…a tiny bit.” moving the jacket of Sarah Janes wound slowly Ace laid it off to the side then replaced her hand on the wound letting her hand start to glow with the regenerative energy’s “To anyone who’s listening, please, just this once lend me a favor.”
"I am NOT A PROBLEM! I’m a…tactical consideration!"
The bullet had nicked her lung. Nicked it well. it was getting hard to breath. Her mind slipped sideways a moment, overcome by the ice that seemed to be taking her. Her vision left her for just a moment, though she didn't know if her eyes were falling shut, or the blood to her brain was shutting down in shock. It was then that Ace's voice came to her. Well, the voice was not yet familiar, but there was that tenderness in her inflection that came so unexpectedly. If you didn't know Ace, such empathy might not seem readily apparent.
Gruff and sweet, but mostly sweet. If you knew her.
“This may hurt…a tiny bit.” She explained, clearly already in an agony of worry for her.
"It always does." she said with a short chuckle that turned into a soft cry as Ace lifted away the only thing that seemed to be holding her together.
Blood poured into her lungs, and she grabbed a handful of Ace's clothing, arching as she suddenly could barely breath, eyes rolling up as she struggled. Deeper, deeper and closer to death she went for those next few seconds. Even as Ace's hand began to pour energy into her, it was still a close call, as though seeing if the bilge pumps were enough to keep the boat from sinking. Was her ship already going down.
A few seconds later, she dragged in a huge and ragged breath.
Sweet sweet air deep in her that was more welcome than any other of her entire life. With surprising strength and little thought, Sarah Jane started wrestling with Ace's hand as she began to come back to herself.

Ace let out a sigh of relief when she heard Sarah Jane take a huge ragged breath, when Sarah Jane started wrestling with her hand Ace instinctively pulled her hand away slowly, she didn’t know if her friend was completely healed but at least, for now, Sarah Jane wouldn’t bleed to death.
“Hey, hey, easy.” she placed a hand on Sarah Janes shoulder trying to calm her “You’re going to be ok.”
"I am NOT A PROBLEM! I’m a…tactical consideration!"
Bullets continued to wing off of the shield around them. Sarah Jane was distantly aware that there was some sort of small, two-sided gun fight going on out there.
What . .what had happened?
She'd been hit badly.
"What-"
Who was that looming over her?
Ace. New Ace!
She'd tracked that far when the wall beside them was hit with something big enough to blow a hole in it. A good sized chunk of something crashed off the fragile looking bubble as if it were the hardest steel. As if it were not even being touched. Sarah Jane flinched anyway. Her middle felt burnt, and she felt vulnerable on her back. It helped that this serious young woman who was apparently her long time friend Ace stayed close. Worried as the her friend looked, her voice was calm and comforting.
But not that comforting. What had happened to that fatal wound? Where was the hot pour of blood and the horrible sense of having been impaled? There had been more pain than she'd ever felt in her life before, but now it had settled into twin points of hot flesh and an ache between them as though there was ice slowly melting within. It was enough to force a short grunt of pain from her.
"Ace . . .?"
"What happened?"
"Ace, I was dying. What happened?"
The shield was easily more formidable than anything this planet could produce. They were so safe within that the battle ceased to focus on them. Two different factions were having their small battle out there. She hoped Ace knew the score.

Ace instinctively ducked when something big hit the wall beside them blowing a hole in it. She raised an eyebrow when the chuck fell onto the bubble and didn’t even as much as scratch it “Ok, maybe you bring the bubble shield was a very good idea.”
"Ace . . .?" She’d admit she had that typical short attention span of most Time Lords “Hmm?” "What happened? Ace, I was dying. What happened?" “Oh, used some regenerative energy to heal you.” she held up her hand and wiggled her fingers some before shrugging, “What can I say, it has it perks.” Ace started looking around trying to see if there was anything she could use to make a truce flag so they’d quit getting shot at.
"I am NOT A PROBLEM! I’m a…tactical consideration!"
Sarah Jane could not have been more appalled if she'd heard that Ace had lopped off her arm. She scrambled up on to her knees, grabbing Ace's hands in hopes of grabbing her attention, even in the middle of the battle. Sarah Jane could mostly ignore the battle, she'd seen the shield stand up to Dalek fire before, and she was already working on a plan to get them out of there in the back of her head.
"Ace!?" It was shocking how easy it was to get up. Sure, it hurt, but after the blinding pain of a moment ago, it was almost nothing. Horrified, she shook the young woman. "You can't you have to take it back!"
She was riveted by her friend's miss-matched eyes.
((I am assuming they are both about knee high now))

"You -! Ace!" Aces small smile flattered a little when Sarah Jane grabbed her hands, slightly confused by her reaction.
"Ace!? You can't you have to take it back!" Ace shook her head frowning a little “I can’t, and even if I could I wouldn’t it was the only way you’d survived.” well, that was only half true, Ace had no doubt Sarah Jane was strong enough she possible could of made it till help had arrived but under the circumstances Ace hadn’t been willing to take that chance.
She ducked some instinctively when something big hit nearby “I need to get a signal to someone that we’re out here in this.” squeezing Sarah Janes hand a little to let her know it was ok Ace pulled up her Manipulator and sent out their postion.
"I am NOT A PROBLEM! I’m a…tactical consideration!"
Ace, she realized, was a master of deflection. Sarah Jane's bubble field had nothing on her. She drew in a big breath and blasted her with words as deeply fond as they were annoyed.
"Oh, you're SO much like the Doctor~ so willing to give a pound of flesh, then pretend you're not bleeding!"
Ace still was not having it. Then she realized Ace very well may be rather unsettled by the sound of battle. She was looking around and flinching like a cat in a cage. She was bent on getting them out of there. Quite frankly, Sarah Jane had been simply expecting to wait for it to all burn itself out, then find a way to talk themselves into the negotiating. Someone would have to come talk to them eventually.
Ace wasn't having it, and she let the woman go to do her thing. While Ace seemed to keep a close eye on the battle without, Sarah Jane avoided the view. People were dying and she couldn't stop it.
Not yet.
While Ace contacted whomever it was, Sarah Jane moved to lay back down, stopping half way when she saw the terrible disaster she'd made of her dress. The white silk was gruesomely soaked with blood a shade richer still than the shinning red embroidery.
"I don't like this dress anymore." She said, letting her eyes close a minute. She opened one eye, suddenly remembering blood. "Ace . . . . .you're hit! How bad?"
She hadn't thanked Ace yet, because she didn't even no how to begin.

"Oh, you're SO much like the Doctor~ so willing to give a pound of flesh, then pretend you're not bleeding!" Ace started to open her mouth to argue with Sarah Jane but then stopped, had she become too much like The Doctor? She finished sending the massage and crossed her arms across her chest pondering over that thought a bit more, what if she had, would that necessarily be a bad thing? She’d spent the majority of her adult life with The Doctor, more must had rubbed off than she’d ever realized.
She heard Sarah Jane say something about her dress “Yeah, sure.” but Ace was only half listening now, half her attention on the battle outside the protective bubble of Sarah Jane and the other half still going over the evidence to what Sarah Jane had said.
"Ace . . . . .you're hit! How bad?" the tone of what Sarah Jane said brought her out of her thoughts more than the actual wording “Huh? Oh...” Ace looked down at her arm where she’d been grazed now remembering that it was there “Just a graze, I’ll be fine…it’ll leave and interesting scar across the tattoo though.”
"I am NOT A PROBLEM! I’m a…tactical consideration!"
She swallowed hard, hand pressed over where she used to have a hole in her torso. Something inside moved alarmingly and she grit her teeth, all the while looking hard at Ace in consternation. "You call that a scratch?" She blanched. True, the seeping line was sharp and clean, but too deep for Sarah Jane's tastes.
It was sinking in for her just how close they'd come to true disaster. A little woozy with it all, she reached out and took a grip on Ace's shoulder. It was only with the anchor of her friend at hand that she could make herself look out at the carnage. This was not by far her first war, and it didn't take long to surmise how long this may have been going on. A mix of primitive weapons and modern. Clearly organic materials for some things, high tech for others. They'd started out with plenty of advanced technologies, but clearly had come up short of them and had to fall back to ancient history to fill the gaps torn by war.
That, and the sheer brutality of it. Was this whom she had to deal with? Was it one side or the other of these she would have to champion? Her shield was best seen where red blood had splashed and gently crisped to raisin black against that dome of energy. Body parts were a strew. These she gave only a glance. The living had more to teach her.
Stone faced, she learned what she could of them in horrified observation. It seemed an age of labored breathing before she saw a shift. Before she saw a face in the crowd that was not twisted with hate. A face that was seeking. A face that was curious and anxious and caught in wonder at the force bubble and it's two occupants. A woman's face cupped with sensibly short brown hair. A long, horsy face, not necessarily attractive in any standard way, but the clear empathy and worry on her face was like a cool wash cloth to the head amidst a fever. Sarah Jane waved tentatively, beckoning. The woman waved others forward.
"Ace, look! Who is that?" She pointed.
Sarah Jane had her hand pressed against the lingering wrongness inside her. It wasn't bad, but it was . . . .well, maybe it was bad.
Behind the woman came two more who seemed much more concerned about her and Ace rather than bent on their destruction. The second one had a had a kit with him. A Doctor's bag.
She knew a Doctor when she saw one.

"You call that a scratch?" Ace raised an eyebrow then looked at the line again “…I’ve had worse.”
When Sarah Jane grabbed her shoulder it felt like her arm was gonna come off but Ace covered up the fact that she wanted to cry out by clearing her throat. She’d seen the landscape before, more times than she’d care to admit so instead she closed her eyes and listened.
To her it seemed the entire planet was crying out, for death, resolution or salvation she could never be sure but definitely crying out for something.
She felt Sarah Jane moving some but wasn’t paying complete attention "Ace, look! Who is that?" Ace snapped open her eyes and looked were Sarah Jane was pointing, it took her a second to make out the faces before letting out a sigh of relief “That would be the rescue party,” no wait, that didn’t sound right. “…I guess cavalry probably sounds better. I think it’s Lt. Michaels, Corporal Higgins and Doctor Jordon…but I could be wrong.”
