She'd clamped her hand down hard on that groove of flesh left by the bullet that had grazed Ace. It wasn't as if her friend would bleed to death any time soon, but later there may not be time to put pressure on it. And blood was going to get all over the place if she didn't put a stop to it. Ace ignored it, though she'd expected there to be some swearing.
Sarah Jane said some choice words of excitement when she realized that help had come for them. Words she only said in front of Ace, but then again, that is where she'd learned them.
"!@#$ yeah." Mission changed, she let go of Ace, promising herself to get a tight tie over the damage as soon as they could. "As soon as they get to us, I'll drop the shield. It's going to startle some, but not all of them. I need you to keep the few that notice off of us for the first few seconds, eh? Till we can dissapear into this mess."
She suddenly hated her dress. It was going to stand out like a sore, blood covered thumb.

She clamped her teeth down so hard she was starting to wonder if she’d break them when Sarah Jane put pressure on her arm “Ok, yeah that does hurt.” she knew her friend was just trying to help so she didn’t protest any more than that.
Ace blew out a breath when Sarah Jane let go of her “As soon as they get to us, I'll drop the shield. It's going to startle some, but not all of them. I need you to keep the few that notice off of us for the first few seconds, eh? Till we can disappear into this mess." “So, a distraction?” reaching into her cargo pants pockets Ace pulled out her blaster and flipped the safety off “That I can do boss.”

"I am NOT A PROBLEM! I’m a…tactical consideration!"
"Keep the notice off us." she had said. But it was a self serving view. It sunk in what she really wanted. Needed. Ace's attention was clearly divided, but Sarah Jane petitioned for more, leaning right into her gaze.
"Ace . . .you know what I really mean is I need a distraction so I can escape. I'm going to have to find some way to hide all this white right away, and I feel like something is drizzling into my stomach." She confessed. That it hurt seemed obvious. She is pale, her upper lip sweaty. "I want you to help me escape, then come find me. Come with us, but I need you to keep them off me if you can."
Her eyes darted to the motley, ernest crew that were fighting their way toward the bubble shield.
She set her lips, for this went against the grain.
"I'm sorry Ace, will you do it?"

Ace watched Sarah Jane for a minute as she talked and leaned into her gaze "Ace . . .you know what I really mean is I need a distraction so I can escape. I'm going to have to find some way to hide all this white right away, and I feel like something is drizzling into my stomach." she nodded raising an eyebrow taking in what Sarah Jane had said and how she looked, frowning Ace could tell that her friend was still in a bit of distress.
"I'm sorry Ace, will you do it?" Ace looked down for a minute thinking it over “Of course I’ll do it…but, promise me one thing if this causes me to regenerate you owe me a beer.” Ace smiled a tiny bit already working out in her head how to do this.

That keen eye always seemed so quick to do the math when assessing success or failure. Those eyes stayed down too long
And she didn't care for the answer those lips gave her either. Her face may have changed, but Ace had not. Not much. Not enough that Sarah Jane couldn't read her.
She shook her head at her friend, a little smile coming to the corners of her lips. She would not be duped. She came very close to dropping her friend right there just to save her, but a better idea came to her.
"Change of plan. We're going to drop the shield and wait for that lot to come extract us. We'll have to cover them. Give me a gun, Ace." The look in her eye was dead serious as she regarded her friend.
The two of them stood untouched in the eye of the storm. She could see the small band headed their way getting pinned down. Sarah Jane was already looking for the best cover to shoot from.

"Change of plan. We're going to drop the shield and wait for that lot to come extract us. We'll have to cover them. Give me a gun, Ace." it took Ace the span of about three seconds to study her friend standing in front of her and judge the intensity of the look her friend was giving her.
Quickly Ace reached into her pocket and pulled out her back up blaster a small to medium sized weapon but it definitely was hiding how much kick it could put out, reaching over she flipped a switch on the side and a low whirring sound began to emit from the gun as it charged up.
Turing the gun around she handed it to Sarah Jane grip first, she trusted Sarah Jane enough to know that the woman knew how to handle a weapon so she was comfortable handing her friend the gun that way (don’t try this at home kids.)
Completely seriously Ace looked at Sarah Jane “Safety’s on flip the switch there on the right side to turn it off and when you fire, squeeze the trigger don’t pull it and don’t fire till you’re absolutely sure you’re ready, I only have a couple of spare packs on me.” she hadn’t been expecting to need them “You got it?”

"I am NOT A PROBLEM! I’m a…tactical consideration!"
She gave it a quick once over with her eyes. All she'd let herself since her mind had gone into that overdrive space. Her mind was marking the positions of every foe. Of every allie Of every chunk of debris and body that littered the way between themselves and the friendlies.
It looked perfectly deadly. Trust Ace to know exactly what to hand her. Sarah Jane's hands moved over it, learning it's weight. She drew it up and squinted along the top, the only time she would bother to check the aim. She could feel her pulse in her own throat. She could feel the slow slick trickle inside her, and the way her big toe on the right had gone numb.
"Back to back then?"
Back to back, and shoulder to shoulder. She'd maneuvered to give Ace the most complex section. She'd have to be the one to be careful not to kill their new friends. Sarah Jane faced the onslaught.
"Ready?" She asked Ace, even as she tried to give the smallest signal to one of the short haired women grunting hard to get to them.
She didn't count down. Ace was always ready. She lowered the shield.
She held the weapon in both hands, and took down four targets in three seconds. She did not wound them. She killed them. Most certainly. Today, shattered kneecaps would not be enough. The insurgents on her side of the divide scrambled for cover. Then she used her weapon to break loose bits of whatever was nearby. The broken pavement, the ripped, strange street lamps. She could hear the cries of pain as, like an pool shark, Sarah Jane found the angles to hurt them with, hiding or not. The next two bold enough to peek out at her were promptly pithed. All she could hear was her own heart beat and the clack of her bones as the gun beat back against her grip, sending shocks of that power back through her. She braced hard against it, lips drawn back from her teeth, a vision of white silk and red blood.

"Back to back then?" Ace nodded breathing in and closing her eyes before breathing out "Ready?" nodding slowly Ace listened to her hearts beat.
It was times like these, Ace was glad for her Timelord abilities. Every Time Lord had their own strengths Aces just happen to be knowledge of gun fighting and a slight bit of clairvoyance…this incarnation that is.
When she felt the slight difference as Sarah Jane dropped the bubble shield Ace snapped open her eyes she was more than just Ace now, she was Time's Vigilante, the soldier.
Moving swiftly and quickly she took down a couple of targets nearby she didn’t miss and she didn’t wound but took them out with quick certainly and moved on just as fast when they slumped to the ground.
Dropping down behind a rock for cover Ace took a minute to catch her breath before shouting “How you doing Sarah Jane?”

"I am NOT A PROBLEM! I’m a…tactical consideration!"
It really did matter who you had at your back. In times such as these, there was no being politically correct. There was no way to convince your spine that you felt protected if you did not. There was no way not to split your attention if you didn't trust the person who was looking the other way for you.
With Ace, she felt safer from the back than she did the front. Though her hands had terrifying accuracy, she was not as experienced at reading the flow of an entire battle. A growl started up in her throat as she made herself remember the particular rag-tag bunch that were coming to help. She tried to keep in mind the graffiti on their light, dull battle armor that seemed built for speed. This group coming was not homogenous like the other two factions. It was everything she could do to keep them in mind and not shoot them. Actually, it was pure luck that none had come into her sites. Every living thing that had had perished. She heard Ace shout to her, but Sarah Jane could only growl through clenched teeth in response.
She swept away a dozen of them. For a moment, she'd cleared her side. Surely another wave would come, but she turned to face Ace's side. When she saw the carnage, she had a wave of horror thinking perhaps she'd done in both sides in the fugue state that sometimes took her in battle. Then she saw Ace drop one more. No nonsense.
Two standing men from the third faction came out from cover, wide eyed. They were coming at a run but stopped as Sarah Jane took aim at them, her eyes gone cold.

Ace looked over at Sarah Jane when she saw her friend raise her weapon and take aim at the faction coming towards them.
Reaching up quickly and trying to make sure not to squeeze Sarah Janes wrist so she accidently pulled the trigger Ace attempted to lower Sarah Janes weapon. “Annnnd those are friendies.”
Looking over at Sarah Jane, Ace instantly regretted giving her the weapon at all now, softly “Hey.” she applied a gently bit of pressure to her friends wrist “::Sarah Jane::”

"I am NOT A PROBLEM! I’m a…tactical consideration!"
She was not 'cool'. She didn't look 'slick' with that weapon in her hand as she stood there now.
Certainly, she had before. She'd looked in the mirror holding her favorite firearms and practiced looking badass. It was all part of the mystique of using gentle gun play, and winning without having to shoot anyone. She knew she could make a big gun look good.
That isn't what was happening now.
Her mouth is open in a portrait of airless grief. There is a rim of dust on her face that had been turned into a dirty little outline of where the tears had near exploded from her face. There is a slick slim trail from her nose to her upper lip, and her breath comes quick. Her form is outrageously perfect as she aims at them, not bothering to site.
The gun seemed to weigh kilos, but if she could hold it up a few more seconds, this would all be over with. She'd start with the woman so she wouldn't have to hear her grief as she shot the others.
:::Sarah Jane.::::
Ace's voice rang clear and sweet in the middle of her head. Calm and certain. Oh, thank goodness, Ace is here.
Ace would know what to do. It was then she saw her friend's hand, there somewhere between Sarah Jane's soul and the gun. She darted eyes at this new Ace, glad to see her companion, though the woman's eyes be of different hue. Two hues, actually. But Ace was clearly inside.
"Ready?" She asked, hoping to get help with this last batch. Ace could do it.

Ace smiled when Sarah Janes eyes darted to hers “::There you are.::”
"Ready?" Nodding, Ace took the blaster she had given Sarah Jane from her and moved in front of her friend “Always, when I say duck, duck.” she gently gripped the handles of the blasters.
“Duck.” she was careful to make sure Sarah Janes head was completely out of the way of the blasters before she raised them and started firing at what was left.

"I am NOT A PROBLEM! I’m a…tactical consideration!"
Ace had a smile that could reassure a fox at a fox hunt. It was easy to see her friend was pleased to see her. It was a bright point of warmth in a world that had gone ice cold. Ace called the plan, and moved into position to take point on their next action. As instructed, Sarah Jane went low beside Ace.
She tried to fire her empty hands into the remaining miscreants.
Where the hell had her gun gone? Then she ducked closer to Ace's leg as she let loose some serious firepower. Some were getting through though, reaching for them . ., running at them . . .why didn't Ace take them down? She had a hard grip on one of her friend's sturdy cargo pockets riveted to the thigh of her pants.
"Ace!" She called out as a man and a woman carefully snatched Sarah Jane back up to her feet. Someone was talking to Ace.
"Ace!" she held up her hand to stop the person who was talking to her for a second while the man and woman snatched up Sarah Jane “Oi! Easy the woman just…” Ace stopped herself from saying that Sarah Jane had just caught a bullet but now she was fine, mostly because she didn’t want to answer the questions that that statement would bring.
“She’s been injured, she needs to see a medic ASAP.” Ace placed one of the blasters in her cargo pants pocket and placed her palm on the bottom of the other, for better aim, just in case she needed to take out any more “But first we need to get out of here.”

Grimly wasn't tall. Her name defied hazing, and so had her amazing tactical skills. Oh, she could shoot and dive and run as fine as any soldier, but she couldn't quite keep up that way in this elite squad. But whenever she took point, all eyes were instantly on her. Grimly was the sort of woman who would get you home.
They were an open-minded bunch, and had adopted not the simple battle signals of the different factions here. No, they had learned a vast and flowing hand language. Because honest battle needed more complexity of communication if you didn't want to act like primitives. She stood in the middle of them all, and nearly danced out her instructions. It was fast, and everyone broke in their own direction.
Whatever level of following Grimly had, the whole squad held Ace McShane in perhaps even more esteem. One might even call it a blind devotion. Grimly had caught everything Ace said, and instantly turned it into a plan.
"Bug out!" Was the only thing she said out-loud, but the small squad split into tasks. Quick. Efficient. On the move. Ace would find herself with a young but hawk-eye'd wing man. One fellow handed his pack over to his buddy, and scooped up Sarah Jane, strong enough to hold her cradle style.
They were headed back out of the conflict, and toward Lowtown.
