Jamie is a proud Highlander, who miraculously survived the Battle of Culloden -- twice! After the first time, he ran away with the Doctor. The second time, he'd been mind-wiped by the Time Lords and left to fend for himself in his native Time Zone. Perhaps more adventures await this young man? Perhaps his memories may start to return? WHO knows?

Scottish Highlands, July 1746
~~~
What must it be like for someone to have had wonderful adventures with good friends -- adventures (and friends) that broke the barriers of Time and Space -- and then, to have all of those memories of all those times, with all those people, wiped out, save for the first? Well, if all goes to plan and those memories remain securely tucked away in the deepest recesses of the mind, then… perhaps, not so bad. However, if even just a tiny bit of one of those memories was too strong to be repressed, then perhaps that person would become haunted by the ghost of what they’d forgotten.
In the case of Jamie McCrimmon, the Time Lords responsible for suppressing his memories misjudged him. They didn’t know who he was -- not really -- nor did they know about the incredibly deep connection he had made with one particular young lady who had traveled him and the Doctor. They didn’t know that his subconsciousness wouldn’t let her go, no matter how effective their mind-wiping technology was.
She came to him in his dreams -- not every night, but often enough to be easily and wistfully remembered upon waking. Jamie couldn’t remember her, but he knew that he cared for her. Deeply. He knew her name was Victoria because that’s what he calls her in the dreams.
He’s pretty sure -- at least, in the dreams -- that he loves her, but he’s also pretty sure that she’s not Real. That he’s dreamed her up. That she’s an unattainable, fictional fantasy. And, why would he care a whit about her, anyway? She’s a damned Englishwoman!
And also, probably just a figment of his imagination..
In most of the dreams, the pair of them spend time together outdoors. Sometimes, they walk the Scottish moors arm-in-arm, smiling and laughing -- though, Jamie could never remember what they said to each other. It was probably all just dream-gibberish, anyway.
The only word Jamie could recall was her name: Victoria.
Also, Jamie was certain that he recognized some of the locations they visited in his dreams, and one of those places just so happened to be only a few hours’ walk from home…
He wanted to go there.
One day, Jamie finally chose to go check it out. He had no idea what he expected to find there -- certainly, not the girl. All he knew was that something inside was telling him that this was something he needed to do. And so, he packed lightly and set out across the misty morning heath.
Susan didn’t know why Ace McShane had taken a sudden and overwhelming interest in her life. In hindsight, Susan knew it wasn’t ‘sudden’ - the few times they’d met in her first regeneration had been one of the only memories that kept her identity grounded. Their rivalry - and maybe the friendship that had spurred from that rivalry, and maybe the whatever-more that had spurred from that friendship - was one of the only things that Susan was sure of in life. The Daleks could attempt to remove her from existence, the trauma of that time-line manipulation could wipe her memories, and maybe the Doctor could be a little distant, but she could count on two things.
The first was that Ace McShane would always find Susan. While not sudden in hindsight, it certainly was overwhelming. Susan had made her peace that her ties to her previous life had been severed. Her husband was dead, her children were dead, and her grandfather had decided that it’d be better to put some distance between them. Susan vacillated between apathy and strong dislike for the man, but she couldn’t begrudge him bringing Ace into her life.
The second fact she was certain of was that although she’d had to likely commit murder to achieve it, she had a TARDIS. It wasn’t stuck in the form of a rickety old blue box. And, although it sometimes grumbled at her directions, it was mostly loyal to her. It certainly obeyed her more easily than it had the Master — although Susan doubted that the Master had even bothered to bond with it. As much as she had worked on her relationship with the TARDIS, they were still temperamental ships especially this type. It didn’t always bring her to where she wanted to go, didn’t always bring her even close— like the time she’d accidentally ended up in New New York instead of New York, or when she’d ended up in Ethiopia instead of Europa.
Susan was therefore unimpressed, but not surprised, when she stepped out into the warm and muggy air of Scotland instead of brisk Florana. Susan crossed her arms, debating for a moment just to turn on her heels and declare the entire trip a waste - her hair didn’t handle humidity very well - but she’d promised Ace a nice time, and Scotland in the eighteenth century was not always a good time, but it couldn’t be too boring. “So,” she called inside the TARDIS, which was disguised as a tree with a rather large hole in the base, “it’s not quite the grand Florana viewscape I promised, but Scotland’s a runner up. Better drinks here,” she finished, looking around curiously.
The mist surrounded Jamie, now. He was in a low valley, near a stream, and he could see maybe about four or five feet in front of his face. He walked beside the river and kept on moving, intent on reaching his destination. As he walked, he heard a strange sound...
It was the sound of a TARDIS materializing nearby, obscured by the mist, but... Jamie didn't really know that. All he knew was that it was vaguely familiar to him, somehow -- and it just so happened to be emanating from the direction he was going.
And then, just as suddenly as it had come on, it stopped.
Then, he heard the voice of... an Englishwoman?
Jamie paused and strained to listen to what was being said. Was she friendly, or was she an enemy? Or maybe, was she the mysterious Victoria that haunted his dreams?
He put a hand on his dirk, just in case, and slowly, he stalked closer...
Ace couldn’t help but smile to herself when she heard Susan shout back into the TARDIS that they hadn’t, in fact, landed them in Florana “It’s fine.” reaching over Ace checked the scanner quickly. Yup, definitely in Scotland, on earth.
Reaching over Ace grabbed her jacket and headed out of the TARDIS after Susan, closing the door, so the TARDIS looked like a regular old tree. “Better drinks here,”“First rounds on me yeah.” she smiled to Susan.
“You know if you actually took the time to bond with your TARDIS it might actually listen to you more.” Ace teased a little. All those years ago when they met Ace never would have thought that the two of them would be traveling together after they had met and the two of them to an extent had every intention of killing each other.
“So flip a coin to pick a direction?”
"I am NOT A PROBLEM! I’m a…tactical consideration!"
Susan rolled her eyes, putting her hands on her hips. “Yeah, sure, I’ll take it out for a romantic dinner or volunteer at the local old folks’ home after we’re done here,” she huffed, irritated mostly because she knew Ace was absolutely correct and also because she’d already given it a shot at bonding. “But for now, how about just the two of us bond and not worry about a finicky TARDIS?” she suggested, smiling winningly. “I’ll worry about that later.”
Hey, it wasn’t just her grandfather that pantsed communicating and repairing TARDISes.
“No need for a coin,” Susan grinned, holding up a finger for silence. “Hear that?” she asked, moving towards the sound of running water. “Basic rules of commerce and sustainability - where there’s a river, there’s a town. Just need to follow the water.” The mist was a little heavier than she’d anticipated, and she made her way back slowly, making it her new goal not to lose Ace in the fog. “I’m not sure we could even see a coin if we flipped it — I can hardly see my own feet.”
What's this? It sounded like the two lassies were heading out for a drink... this early in the morning? And the nearest pub miles away?
And what, for the love of God, was a TARDIS? Jamie thought that, perhaps, as the other girls had implied that Tardis was feminine and could be finicky from time to time... Maybe Tardis was a third lass?
Jamie strained to listen, but all he heard were the same two women's voices drifting off toward the river.
He let his dirk fall back into its sheath, and he swiftly and quietly followed after Ace McShane and @susanforeman. It didn't take long for him to catch them up -- at which point, he made a point of making twigs snap underfoot to be heard. It wouldn't be proper to spook a couple of women, after all.
"Hullo? Please excuse me, lassies," Jamie spoke out in their general direction, perhaps from a distance of 8 - 10 feet away. "Ye seem t' be lost," he theorized. They were all, of course, a bit lost in this fog.
Ace gently nudged Susan’s shoulder with her own as they walked away from the TARDIS “This is nice. Just the two of us, not running for our…” Hearing the twig snap Ace spun around, her hand going to the blaster she kept in the holster under her jacket.
"Hullo? Please excuse me, lassies," Looking sideways at Susan, Ace slowly removed her hand off the blaster "Ye seem t' be lost,"
Holding up her hand Ace made a tiny bit gesture “Maybe, a little bit.” she made a little shrug at Susan, couldn’t help to be nice to the locals.
"I am NOT A PROBLEM! I’m a…tactical consideration!"
“It’s nice,” she conceded, and she was just about to say ‘though anything nice is not generally self-sustaining’ or something to that effect when the twigs began snapping behind them. Susan turned, not quite as quickly as Ace as she squinted through the fog — the man could be a three-headed shuck and she’d be none the wiser.
“Considerably lost,” Susan agreed, voice more cheerful than she particularly felt. “My theory is to follow the water. Human civilization tends to be grounded near water especially before technological advances make ground travel expedient.”
She didn’t quite share Ace’s sentiments about being nice to the local life forms, but this was supposed to be a nice little vacation. And Ace was probably getting rather tired of Susan picking fights everywhere she went. “I don’t suppose you’d want to take up mantle of local guide?”
She had lost him at the word 'technological'. That wasn't a word commonly used in his Time Zone, nor by his people -- this was the mid-1700s, after all. However, Jamie understood the rest of what was said, as well as what was asked of him.
"Of course, I'd be happy ta' show ye lasses around these parts," Jamie obligingly told the young women. "I'm Jamie McCrimmon," he said, offering the ladies a bit of a bow.
"Now, th' nearest town is Inverness -- is that where ye were tryin' ta' go?" he asked, assuming that since they were lost, that they may have been on their way to the largest settlement in the area. Of course, he didn't know by what means they had arrived, nor that their means of conveyance had been the cause of that strange and eerily familiar sound that he'd heard earlier.
By this time of morning, the fog was starting to burn off, and the way across the countryside was becoming somewhat clearer.
“Nice to meet you Jamie, I’m Ace and this…” she wasn’t completely sure what Susan her where at the moment causing Ace to stammer for a second before continuing “is my friend Susan.”
Reaching up Ace scratched the back of her head looking over at Susan for a second before returning her attention to Jamie “Yeah, I agree with Susan theory about water and civilization. So…I guess yeah Inverness was where we were heading.”
"I am NOT A PROBLEM! I’m a…tactical consideration!"
At least this Jamie fellow seemed to be a gentleman — even bowing to them, which Susan thought was just absolutely precious. An eyebrow perked as Ace introduced her as a ‘friend’, but perhaps it was all for the better, then. “Mrs. Susan Campbell,” she expanded politely, giving Jamie McCrimmon a playful curtsy before straightening her back and listening to the exchange thoughtfully. Inverness? She’d definitely heard that name before, and her eyes strayed to the river she was standing next to.
“Inverness… like the River Ness? Is this the river?” she asked, unable to keep the childish glee from her voice. “Hang on, drinks can wait until later— how long of a walk is it from Loch Ness to here?” she asked, slinging an arm around Ace’s waist and pulling her alongside her until she could put a friendly arm around Jamie. “I couldn’t live with myself if I was this close to meeting Nessie and didn’t take the chance. What say you, Ace? Jamie McCrimmon?”
Jamie thought it a little odd that Ace didn't seem so sure as to whether or not she and Susan -- or rather, Mrs. Campbell? -- were heading to Inverness; she'd said that she guessed that that's where they were heading. However, guess or certainty, it didn't really matter to the Highlander.
... and he especially didn't mind when the lasses became a bit 'up close and personal' -- after all, what man wouldn't mind being surrounded by a pair of lovely ladies?
"I daresay it would'na take any longer ta get ta tha loch than it would ta town -- might even take a little less time, actually..." Jamie replied, trailing off while he thought about the distance from here to Inverness, and from here to the great Loch Ness.
"I'm nae so sure about 'Nessie', though... She's a great legend, ta be sure, but I've never seen hide nor hair o' that particular beastie," Jamie confided to the girls. "A'course, I've never purposely sought her out, either, so..." He looked back and forth between the girls and gave a slight shrug of his shoulders. "Maybe today's tha day -- count me in!"
And with that, the trio shifted their direction toward the [in]famous loch and the large and legendary creature that supposedly resides within its waters.
Ace slung her arm around Susan's waist as she put a friendly arm around Jamies “Yeah I wouldn’t mind trying to see if we could find Nessie, should be fun.” she couldn’t help but think to herself damn now she wished she had brought some sort of picnic with them.
She walked along with the group for a second before taking Susan's hand in her own saying softly “Too bad we did bring any music huh?” more audibly “So Jamie, you never said, what brings you out today?” she asked Jamie.
He'd all but forgotten what had convinced him to go on this misty morning hike, but when Ace asked point-blank asked him what had brought him out here today, it all came back to him. His smile faltered, and the spring in his step floundered -- but only for that one moment.
"Och," Jamie lamented. "T'was a beautiful lass with th' name'a Victoria," he explained, though he felt more than a little silly divulging this sensitive information to a couple of strange women that he'd just met. "I see her in my dreams... I dinnae ken if she's even real, but... I feel that she is, an' that she's out there, somewhere, waitin' fer me ta' find her."
He cracked a somewhat wistful smile and carried on.
"Some dream, huh?" Jamie rhetorically asked. "Always feels so real when it's her..."
