Name: War Doctor (The Renegade, Grandad)
Face Claim: John Hurt
Age: Nine hundred years old
Species: Time Lord
Planet of Origin: Gallifrey
Time of Origin: Time War
Occupation: The Doctor who was rejected by the other regenerations for burning Gallifrey, he is commissioned by the Sisterhood of Karn to fight in the Time War and save the universe from the Daleks.
Physical Description: The War Doctor appears as an old man with a scruffy appearance. He is wearing dark clothing below a brown leather jacket. He has long pants that extend to loop around his boots. Under the jacket is a dark shirt with a darker vest that is fixed to the body by three buttons. He is wearing a grey scarf around his neck. His eyes are old and sad showing his conflict over what he is meant to do.
Personality: The War Doctor is riddled with grief and conflict from the sights of war he has witnessed. He has a resigned mindset even though he is also conflicted over the knowledge he must destroy Gallifrey in order to end the Time War.
He is one of the more violent of the Doctor incarnations, his first scene with him in the Fiftieth Anniversary shows him asking for a gun then blasting a message into the wall. Even his TARDIS is violent, having burst through a wall destroying Daleks to save and retrieve her Time Lord. The War Doctor himself also feels unworthy to bear the title Doctor, as he feels his choice to destroy Gallifrey and fight on the front lines of the War makes him unworthy of the title.
History: Born from the Sisterhood of Karn’s administration of the Warrior potion that directed the course of Eight’s regeneration. The War Doctor is created after Eight’s crash lands on the planet of Karn during the Time War after his failed attempt to save the ship’s pilot Cass. At first he refuses to take the potion saying his time was up, he then witnesses the death of Cass and with a resignation takes the potion thus regenerating into the War Doctor where he appears at as a young man and takes the bandolier off of the corpse of the late pilot Cass.
For the remainder of the Time War the War Doctor fights on the front lines. He witnesses the fall of many cities in Gallifrey, including the city of Arcadia. After many countless years and battles the War Doctor now old and grizzled makes the decision to activates the Moment, also known as the Galaxy Eater is a fiery red sentient weapon that was created by the Ancients of Gallifrey, and destroys Gallifrey and the Daleks. However moments before he activates the Moment it manifests into the likeness of Rose Tyler, Bad Wolf, and begins to talk to him about his alternate choice. The Moment brings him into contact with his older incarnations the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors as they fight off an impending Zygon invasion of Earth. Teaming up with these two incarnations The Moment uses them to show the War Doctor what he is doomed to become should he go through with his plans. The Moment Rose goes so far as to call Ten, the One Who Regrets, and Eleven, The One Who Forgets, after Eleven denies that he remembers counting the children present on Gallifrey when the Moment is activated and Ten states the number of children.
After witnessing the two Doctors stop a conflict between the Zygons and the agents of UNIT from blowing up London from a section of UNIT housed below the Tower of London called the Black Archives. The War Doctor states to Moment Rose he has seen enough and is ready to face his choice. They both vanish back to their time period where we find the War Doctor once more standing over the Moment yet again. He says that he has no choice and must use the Moment as by doing so he becomes the men that Ten and Eleven are now and by becoming these men he saves countless others because he destroys Gallifrey.
The Moment Rose looks at him with a mixture of pity and compassion and tells him to remember the sound of the TARDIS. The War Doctor responds by stating he remembers the sound. Moment Rose says that the sound brings the feeling of hope to the beings who hear it, even him, she tells him to listen and suddenly behind him the two TARDISes of Ten and Eleven show up and Ten, Eleven, and Clara step out of it. War Doctor tells the two other Doctors to return to their time streams and let him do what he must. Eleven tells him that they know he must do it and are there so he doesn’t have to do the deed alone. Eleven then states that the deed is now done not against the name of the Doctor but instead in the name of the millions who die to save the universe. Clara stops the three of them by saying she could not see Eleven doing this deed. Her statement then allows the Doctors to find another idea for the moment. The War Doctor closes the Moment Box and the three Doctors combined plan out how to lock Gallifrey away forever in a Time Lock.
The three Doctors contact the Gallifreyan council to inform them of their decision, and after a bit of convincing and the arrival of the rest of the Doctors incarnations, they lock Gallifrey away in the Time Lock. We later see the three Doctors back in the Undergallery in front of the painting called No More. The three Doctors converse about the change in name for the paining to The Fall of Gallifrey. They talk about the Time Lock and how they had saved the people of Gallifrey. The War Doctor smiles and returns to his TARDIS after saying his final goodbyes. His TARDIS takes off and he happily regenerates into the Ninth incarnation of the Doctor.
Writing Submission: Standing on a distant hill of Gallifrey, a large blaster in one hand, overlooking the wreckage of the most recent battle stands the man who once called himself the Doctor. Dark sad eyes filled with loss stare at the wreckage with regret. Why? Why had so many had to die? Strewn across the filled is the wreckage of fallen Daleks and the bodies of Time Lords killed mid regeneration. A single tear slides down his dirty soot stained cheek living a jagged trail leading into his beard. “Farewell my kin, your deaths will not be in vain.” He turns and walks into a tall blue box that looks out of place but oddly that looks like it belongs. He pushes the door open and enters his TARDIS. He leans over his console and presses a few buttons on it to contact the Council.
“Report Doctor, what is the outcome of your efforts.” The President of Gallifrey says as soon as the connection is made.
“The battle was a success, there were multiple casualties. We lost fifty Time Lords but managed to drive the Daleks back.” His voice remains flat and controlled during his entire report. Within his mind is whirling as he tries to control his conflicting emotions. “What are my next coordinates?”
“We are sending the destination and coordinates to your TARDIS now.” This time it was one of the councilmembers who speaks, the Doctor never bothers with names anymore. There is a sharp ding and he quickly sets the coordinates.
“Destination and coordinates received. I will be there in a moment.” He adjusts his gun and returns it to its holster.
“Good work Doctor. We will await your next report.” He sighs as he hangs up and hits the activation button sending his TARDIS to the next battle, his next battle, they seem so never-ending. He must do something, there had to be a way to end this war. He feels a thing in his hearts stir, a desire to end it all. He would find a way to end the war. “TARDIS, old girl, research weapons that might help us end this war.” There was a faint comforting ding as a weapon appears on the screen and below it is its name: The Moment.
He stares at the readout on the Moment and looks at the location. "This is the only way isn't it girl?" He listens to his TARDIS humming to him. "You're right we can't be hasty about this." He reads through his next battle. The Towers of Canonicity and Likelihood "Well this could be very interesting." He sighs and hits a few buttons sending the TARDIS to the Tower of Likelihood. As soon as he lands he finds himself suddenly very tired. He was so tired and ready to end it all but knows he must go on. He opens the doors fully dressed for battle and listens to the never ending sounds of war. "Let's get this over with."
