History:
The Doctor thus far has had ten known incarnations and at least one "not spoken of" incarnation better known as the "War Doctor", something that the Doctor as a whole is not very proud of. Each incarnation, also more formally known as regeneration, has its own unique quirks that he's had over the years. His history is a very complex detailed wibbley wobbley mess that only he can figure out and one that he doesn't really talk about many others not even the companions he makes friends with.
His early life on Galifrey was to say the least not an easy road. A family that wanted him in the Army verses being at the Academy left him a struggling Time Lord growing up. It didn't help that having stared into the Schism set his life up one for the very reason he travels in his blue box. But most of his Gallifrey life was one of an obscure notion and one not discussed much. Before traveling in the TARDIS it is known that he had grown and had family, a granddaughter of which named Susan, he traveled with for some time once he did steal the TARDIS and left Gallifrey.
Strangely the Doctor was not much up for human interaction at that point, but after meeting his first Earth companions, it is where his ventures really began to take off. But as time goes even family and old friends leave, times change, and so do faces like the Doctor's. He met many enemies including the Daleks, Cybermen, Weeping Angels, etc. Yet in some strange ways those things have come and gone over time as well and even return when most unexpected.
Sadly some of the companions the Doctor had prior to his "War Doctor" state aren't all as well remembered as per say the ones from his ninth regeneration on, but that's because being a time lord causes one to compartmentalize things so as to not become overwhelmed, but he will somewhere always in his mind remember all the adventures and times he spent with them. However, below is a list of the ones he's come in contact with just as reference. Please note this list only goes up to the tenth.
Susan (1st doctor/granddaughter)
Barbara Wright (1st doctor/1st true companion)
Ian Chesterton (1st doctor/1st true companion)
Vicki (1st doctor)
Steven Taylor (1st doctor)
Katarina (1st doctor/1st death)
Sara Kingdom (1st doctor)
Dodo Chaplet (1st doctor)
Polly (1st-2nd doctor)
Ben Jackson (1st-2nd doctor)
Jamie McCrimmon (2nd doctor)
Victoria Waterfield (2nd doctor)
Zoe Heriot (2nd doctor)
Liz Shaw (3rd doctor)
Jo Grant (3rd doctor)
Sarah Jane Smith (3rd-4th doctor)
Harry Sullivan (4th doctor)
Leela (4th doctor)
K9 (4th doctor/pet)
Romana I (4th doctor)
Romana II (4th doctor)
Adric (4th-5th doctor/alternate universe companion)
Tegan Jovanka (4th-5th doctor)
Nyssa of Traken (4th-5th doctor)
Vislor Turlough (5th doctor)
Kamelion (5th doctor).
Perpugilliam "Peri" Brown (5th-6th doctor)
Melanie Bush (6th-7th doctor)
Ace (7th doctor)
Grace Holloway (8th doctor)
Rose Tyler (9th doctor)
Adam Mitchell (9th doctor)
Jack Harkness (9th doctor)
Before he became the tenth though, and before he met Rose Tyler, the Doctor had spent time traveling alone doing odd tasks here and there trying to come down off a war he wanted to forget. Some of his more current adventures, however, had been with Rose Tyler and a few sprinkled here and there with Jack Harkness. Everything from the Daleks to the Cybermen had been covered pretty much by his ninth regen. The Doctor had first met Rose when an alien was using store mannequins to try and terrorize London. From that point on she traveled with him from time to time in his TARDIS everywhere, leaving what the Doctor called "Mickey the Idiot" behind as he showed her the end of the universe and much more.
However, as all things go, all good things come to an end and so did his ninth regeneration. After a bad mishap at a station in space at some point in Earths future, the Doctor was forced to take the energy Rose absorbed from the TARDIS for the BAD WOLF incident after they finished escaping the station. Unfortunately they left Jack behind who had become immortal from the situation. By this point though, the ninth had come decently out of his slump from the Time War.
Now as his tenth regeneration, he's ready to explore the universe again with much more vigor and curiosity than he had, had before. As he see's it he's open to the possibilities. The more appropriate question would be is the companions he has on board ready.

The Doctor had recently been visiting a planet called Aeria, a human populated colony. It was a lovely planet of course, but severely hard to enjoy when what one does like he does, which meant lots of running and very little enjoying the scenery. However, after what he was there to do was done, he took some time to look at the local establishments and even picked up a memento or two to remind himself of the place in the time that he came to it in. Life was fleeting after all so why not enjoy it.
He had been walking down the streets enjoying the buildings in their faded soft lights. Snow had started falling among the leaves that had fell from the trees surrounding the town. The sun had already started setting leaving only the lamps to cast light on the almost blue hued snow flakes as they fell. He loved snow, to be honest he loved the seasons in general, but he most especially loved fall and winter. Fall because the leaves enticed color and change. While winter brought out beauty in the cold. They were undervalued seasons after all, at least that's how he felt about it.
He took it slow going back to the TARDIS, he wanted to enjoy what he believed was the first snow of Aeria, mostly because the snows there were amazing. So were their aurora's but that was beside the point. As was Those wouldn't start happening until the later months there. The wonderful thing about Aeria, was that it actually celebrated the beginning of winter much like the way humans on earth would celebrate Christmas or Thanksgiving. The holiday was like one big mash up of both those it seemed and Halloween all in one. And what was great about it, was that the scents in the air could honestly be reminiscent of those back on Earth with the smells of spice, evergreen, and pumpkin. He always found the pumpkins of Aerie very interesting they were frost colored instead of orange, which seemed to amuse him slightly.
Thinking about all the wonderful things that the planet had to offer when he wasn't running for his life, had him completely lost in thought as he wandered. Even at this late an hour folks were getting last things done and the bustle let him get lost even further into the moment. Luckily for his multi thinking brain, he was able to enjoy the commotion as well as reveal in times past. Times before the Time War and some even after.
