Zoe didn't take very kindly to warnings and 'do not pass' signs. She rolled her eyes and, with a glance behind her, tried to push open the door. Almost immediately, the ship's artificial intelligence kicked in. “Fascinating,” she said, crossing her arms and looking up towards the source of the sound. “Why won't he let me see the bodies? I'd like to examine them,” she told the intelligence. Sensing that she wasn't going to get anywhere with it, she released the door and took a few steps back.
“No thank you,” she replied. “Not at the moment. Can you tell me about your programming?” she asked, continuing to wander the base. “Or is that a top secret thing? Does he call you something? My partner and I were working on artificial intelligences that have emotions,” Zoe said, explaining her curiosity. “Do you?”
The AI, Lucien examined her for a moment. The door would not push open and the AI said. "For the first thing, you can call me Lucien. Yes, I do have emotions. As for why he does not want you to see them, he does not want you to start in on Nightmares. Those might be painful and he does not want his only friend having them."
The AI then connected to the medical scanners throughout the base and scowled. "Seems you need to get back to him Zoe, he seems to be having a night terror which is actually worse than a Nightmare. You may need to intervene and wake him up."

“Lucien,” she repeated, storing the name in her mind for further use. “I wonder, how do you feel emotions? Are you self-actuated or did he program you for certain scenarios to trigger certain emotions?” Zoe asked curiously. She paused, unsure whether artificial intelligences were touchy about their emotional side. After all, she had never talked to one as advanced as Lucien, although a few had come moderately close.
She blinked, a little startled as Lucien explained why the rooms were off limits. “I wouldn't say that I'm his friend,” Zoe said quickly. “He just wants help to keep the Earth safe, and I only want new things to learn.” She walked down the hall, back towards the room she had left him in. “But that's nice of him, if a little presumptuous.”
Night terrors? Zoe sent a puzzled look towards where the sound was coming from, then hurried back to the room. She stood next to him, feeling awkward as she placed her hand on his head. She hummed a lullaby she had heard once when she was little.
Lucien listened to her question and processed the information she had asked, and then responded. "Self actuated as I am actually the consciousness of his father that he managed to download from the neural patterns into his ship. Certain traits of his father have been suppressed however by the programming he has done."
Normally if he was not in a night terror, the lullaby was going to be a big help. Night terrors were stress related or trauma related and the event of his planet being eliminated was both stressful and traumatic enough to induce those night terrors in him. Only unlike a human, Savor was much stronger and was banging on the window. The lullaby made him pause for a moment, and close his eyes. But Zoe could have seen in his eyes something not there before, fear and a look like he was running from something. What exactly had happened that he was not informing her or anyone else about that had been done on his planet?
She watched Savor carefully, processing both the night terror and Lucien's words. How far ahead had his civilization been if they could download a consciousness into a piece of technology? They were beginning to do that here, but it was extremely in its early stages, and no where near as fluent as Lucien seemed to be.
“Savor?” she said, unsure how to wake someone up who was banging on a window and it really didn't seem like he was asleep. Zoe stared at him, a little creeped out by the behavior. “Wake up now. You're just having a nightmare.” Sure, it was different than a nightmare but whatever. She took the collar off, deciding that the voice that makes him sleep was counterproductive. “Please wake up?”
Savor awoke startled by the change in voice and the fact of where he now was. "What occurred?" The Night Terrors had his window been open could have caused him to leap out of the three story building and smash into the pavement below. True it might not hurt him as much as it could a human, due to his tougher skin than they had and his use to high gravity situations but it would still be uncomfortable. Savor looked at her for a moment and smiled…happy she had stopped him. The night terrors were an issue that previously not even his AI had managed to snap him out of, and yet Zoe had managed to do in minutes what it took 3 years for the AI to discover it could not do.
“What occurred?” Zoe repeated, putting her hands on her hips. “You just flipped out and started banging on the windows like a crazy man.” She sighed and put a hand through her hair, uncomfortable. “Are you okay?” she asked, stepping closer to him and putting the collar back on the glass cylinder. It was good while it lasted, but people falling asleep while she was talking was a little annoying.
She opened her mouth to ask him something else, when he smiled. Zoe closed her mouth and looked down at her shoes. “What are you so happy about?” she asked, feigning grumpiness.
"No, I am not okay...it is a night terror issue. See, I have these and often have to resort to strapping myself down at night to prevent me from jumping out of high windows or other places. The night terrors, as earth has diagnosed them are a form of post traumatic stress disorder and what is more stressful than losing your planet? Eventually I found some meds, but they don't help much anymore. And I am happy because you unlike Lucien managed to snap me out of the Night Terrors for some reason. Fortunately too, so I am hoping you can prevent them from continuing to cause me to jump out of places."
Savor smiled at her, and then went and took out a different collar but a variation of the same one he had given her earlier. "This is unlike the one I gave you, it does not put people to sleep but just makes your voice sound beautiful. Made it for you earlier. " Savor offered her the new collar.
“I know what night terrors are,” she said, frowning. “I didn't do anything except tell you to wake up. Anyone else could have done it,” Zoe replied. She raised her eyebrows as Savor told her that he was hoping she could prevent them. “Yeah,” she said drily, “no pressure or anything. Just keep you from jumping out of windows.” Meanwhile, he could swat her across the room like a fly without even meaning to – if she were lucky. Her luck, however, he would break her neck with a slap.
Deciding not to think of the negatives, she took the collar. “Thanks,” she said, putting it around her neck. Normally she wouldn't have minded if her voice weren't the most beautiful, but he seemed insistent on it with the siren collar and now this one. “Can you teach me about Lucien now? I'd like to know more about his AI, if you can tell me.”
"Lucien, I made him from my father's neural patterns before he died...using an experimental device of my dad's. I left out some things, like how my father could scare me into submission with his voice. Other than that, I did copy his tactical skill and wisdom in chess and other circumstances...but not his inventiveness. "
Savor said that, and became quiet. Now it was her turn to ask more questions if she wanted to about the AI. He wanted to make sure all of Zoe's questions had been answered. This was only fitting after all, for him to do such.
Scare him into submission with his voice? Zoe ran her fingers across the collar, observing him while he explained Lucien. Was that why he was so concerned with changing her voice, or was it a simple coincidence? She nodded as he explained that he kept his father's chess wisdom and skill, but not the inventiveness. “Oh,” she replied. “Because you don't want Lucien to invent things, or because you don't trust him?”
"Actually because it is my turn to do the inventing while he just helps out with instructions and what not." Savor smiled as he pushed a button on his glove and some tools rose out of the floor as did parts and Savor built some strength enhancing wrist bands. It could be used to punch people down and break items. It could lift up to six tons with the strength enhancing gloves. "Anyway, you have any bully issues at school?"
“Your turn to do the inventing?” Zoe asked curiously, following him as he got the gloves. She was still a little uneasy around him, but it was beginning to become evident that he wasn't going to hurt her. At least, on purpose. She tilted her head as he invented the wrist bands. It was a little worrisome how he did things without talking, but Zoe wasn't one for speaking and she was glad she didn't have to speak up too often.
You have any bully issues at school?
Her back straightened and she crossed her arms. “No,” she said quickly. “I'm not bullied.” It wasn't true at all, but she'd be damned to admit it. It was a little tiring getting called a robot without emotions, and maybe the older classmates were a little incensed that there was a sixteen year old girl above them and outdoing them. Perhaps they did sometimes push their feet out while she was walking, or brush against her roughly.
Savor looked over at Zoe considering something about her. Somehow she reminded him of a little about himself when he had been younger. Bullies had picked on him a lot, and even though she was concealing it he knew she likely was indeed being bullied. This was one of the reasons he had offered to make her his apprentice and train her.
The TARDIS was a fine means of Time Travel to be sure but no one really understood how it worked besides the doctor. This of course was soon going to change the moment Savor got his hands on the implement. Really now the options to not do so were out of the question because he did need to understand the physics of time travel in order to build his own time machine that was fully functional.
"Bullies, they'll often stop at nothing to humiliate and/or destroy you eventually." Savor's mind went back thinking of his school and he averted his eyes to not show weakness. No, she could not see him cry now. What the bullies had done to him had been atrocious but he prevented himself from making any sound...letting the tears be silent this time.
Zoe looked over at him when he began to speak. She had crossed her arms defiantly and turned her back on him, but something about his tone had sparked her interest. She turned to look at him. “I’m not one to be so easily humiliated,” she said haughtily, a little unnerved by his sudden display of emotion – and the rather obvious fact he was trying to hide it. She had been raised not to give into emotions unless they benefitted you. It was part of the training she had received when she got her degrees in mathematics before she was assigned the job at the Wheel.
“As for destroying me,” she continued, placing her hands on her hips, “I’m tougher than I look. I know that if anyone teases me, they’re just jealous and not worth my time.” Zoe stared at him evenly. “That’s why you can’t let them get to you. What they do might be awful, but just forget about them.”
It was easier for her to say, perhaps, because she had endured since the moment of her conception. Maybe she could hear the things being said outside of her mother’s womb, although highly unlikely, but some say the nine months are as important as the next sixteen years. A child’s personality is shaped within three years, and she grew up on puzzles, silent resilience, and logic blocks.
“Just keep your chin up,” she told him, stepping closer to him and bringing two fingers under his chin, lifting his head gently. “Come on, Savor. Smile once in a while. You’ll get frown lines,” Zoe said politely, smiling.
