The Doctor was still travelling on his own after faking his death. He'd been around, though very careful that no one would know he had survived past his death date. But...he couldn't believe he was thinking this...he was bored. It seemed travelling alone got to this particular incarnation more than it did to his previous ones. He needed someone to cheer him up. And he knew just the person.
Picking up the phone from the console and dialling a number, he waited until someone picked it up at the other end. "Ah yes, hello! Yes, cell 46, Stormcage, etc. Can I speak to Doctor Song please?"

So it was another day in Stormcage. Horrible, horrible thing that it was. Drab walls, drab everything... "Except me." River thought to herself. Her clothes were surprisingly formal for being caged up here, as if she was ready for some sort of social call. In a way, she was. River had the strangest feeling that, somehow, she was about to have a very strange adventure soon. So she'd readied herself, brushed her hair, but on a nice dress. And she'd been doing the same thing for three days now. If The Doctor, or anyone at all, was planning on showing up, they needed to hurry it up. She could just leave her cell at any time, but she wasn't going to miss a visitor.
Then, she heard it. "Is that ringing?" River thought, rising from the cot where she'd been sitting. She moved her blue book out of the way, just barely grazing her hand over it. Yes, the phone was ringing. She scowled ever so slightly, and quickly walked toward the phone, then picked it up. Usually someone let her know she'd have a call, not just transfer it. Unless it was the current leader of Stormcage, and this wasn't the time for his monthly lecture.
"Ah-ha, River!" The Doctor exclaimed upon hearing his wife's voice. "How are you? Prison treating you nice enough? Actually, never mind, we'll catch up in...ooh, five minutes? I'll be there. Grab your coat, we're going on a holiday!"
"Doctor! How di--" "I'm fine, but--" "Five minutes? I can do that, but where are we...drat"
Never could get a word in edgewise, and now he'd hung up. With a sigh, River replaced it on the wall. She'd have to gather up her things. A few dresses, the book... she threw them in a sizable purse, and began to look for anything else. Nope, the gun was already in there, extra ammunition. Yep, everything in order for a proper holiday with River Song. She grabbed the phone and left a quick message for the mess hall, letting them know she'd go without a meal for tonight, maybe for a few nights, and then sat back on the bed.
"Just a minute or two... now I wait." Somehow, those few minutes seemed incredibly long.
After he hung up, the Doctor immediately performed his mad dance around the console. A few buttons and levers later, the TARDIS landed. "Okay...time to go get her." Straightening his bowtie and jacket, he went to the door and opened it. He couldn't help his face breaking into a grin when he saw her.
River nearly jumped up from her cot, seeing the Doctor's silly grin. Mad as a hatter, or worse.
"Well..." River chuckled. "Someone looks happy to see me."
In a single sweep of her arm, River grabbed her purse--made quite heavy by now, mind you--and placed her hand on the TARDIS door. Such a wonderful color of blue, and the wonderful machine was buzzing with action within. Taking the Doctor's hand, she looked past him into the expanse of space within. It was nice to be home, or almost home.
"Are you going to invite me in, or should I drag you in and drive myself?"
The Doctor chuckled. "Alright then you." He took her hand in his and pulled her into his box. "I hope the prison won't miss you too much," he said. After closing the doors he went back up to the console and sent the TARDIS into flight. "Before we go anywhere..." He reached into his pocket and took out his own blue book. "Shall we do diaries?"
"The prison? Hah, they'll barely miss me. Well, even if they do, I can do without those drab grey walls for a day or two. Or five."
Heart jumping in her chest, River followed him to the console. Not unlike a lost puppy, she'd later think, but it seemed so terribly long between their wedding and now. But here she was again, in the wonderful blue box, standing at the steering wheel to time, and space, and everything. But what was he talking about now? Diaries?
"Oh, of course. It'd be good to know where we are." River unzipped her purse and took out the blue diary, smiling as she did so. "Let's see... Have we done the picnic? The one at Asgard? I think you'd remember it. Oh, and what about the thing on the top of that pyramid? That one wasn't too long ago for me, so it'd be nice if you remembered it."
"Um...hang on..." the Doctor quickly looked through his diary. "Yes, we've done the pyramid. 'Course we did, that was our wedding." He looked up her and smiled. She was brilliant, she really was...he just realized how much he missed her. He should go travelling with her more often. "No, don't think I've got Asgard...what about the Byzantium? Have we done that?"
"Yes, Byzantium's been done. But really, the wedding's what I'm mostly worried about." Deciding that they were done looking through diaries--she'd gotten her answer--River put the book back in her purse, and lay it down next to the console. Thank goodness, he knew her well enough, they were married... this was going to be a perfect holiday. Who'd have known, that she'd finally have an adventure with her husband, as husband and wife. Lovely.
Grabbing his hand in her own, River pulled the Doctor toward herself. Such a funny look on his face right now, as if it was filled with the strangest of feelings. "Well, my Doctor. Did you miss me too terribly?" She hoped so, in her own way, but the both of them had to be strong in all this. Still, River couldn't think of that now. Just of the wonderful time they were going to have. Pulling away ever so slightly, River seated herself on the console. "I missed you just a little, sweetie."
"Well, don't worry. You and me are married." The Doctor gave a smile, and just managed to stop it from faltering when she asked her question. "Oh, a bit, I suppose. I've been about as usual. But then I just thought we should have some time to ourselves." He pulled the materialisation lever and the time machine came to a halt. "Right then! Here we are. You and me, alone and on a holiday."
River smiled devilishly back at the Doctor, one eyebrow rising as she looked him over. Pretending not to miss her? What was he playing at now? And there was the lever. Materializing, were they? But wherever they were doing that, that was the real question. River rose from where she sat on the console, and took a quick walk around it. It was nice to be back now, but she couldn't stop her curiosity.
"So then, where have you brought us? Somewhere amazing I'm sure. Dangerous?" River smirked, and chuckled quietly, running a hand through her insane curls. This would be an adventure, certainly.
The Doctor just kept grinning. "I wouldn't exactly say that." He went over to the doors and pulled them open. "So, what would you say? Engand, mid-16th century...in the middle of Spring, though it'll definitely rain at some point...ooh!" Without another word, he tore out of the TARDIS and ran off somewhere.
"Rain, in England?" River tried very, very hard not to roll her eyes. "You don't say."
With a sigh, River gathered her dress about her. There he was, running off again, silly old Doctor. Her wayward locks bounced about as River checked her purse one last time, made sure her notebook was put away properly, and made very purposeful steps toward the door. The TARDIS was just so kind, putting up with the crazy old man after all these years. The Doctor's wife shook her head one last time and jumped from the doorway. Soft, yellow-green turf met her boots. The ground here had such a homey feeling, somehow. Even far, far back in the 16th century. Enough of those musings though, she needed to find her silly little husband.
"Doctor!" River called out, following the form of a man who was running off before her. "Come back here, you wouldn't want me accidentally shooting things!" Oh, but he probably couldn't hear her empty threats. River slung her purse over her shoulder, and took off after the Doctor, her hand resting upon a certain zipper that contained her gun--just in case. In no time at all, she'd caught up to him.
After he'd come to a halt, the Doctor gave a wry smile to River as she caught up with him. "Sorry. Shouldn't have run off, but look at this!" He gestured behind him to the large stone castle. "A bit different from the normal ones. Much, much larger." He took out the sonic screwdriver and scanned around. "And this is picking up something strange inside, giving off a-"
He stopped as something caught his eye. Looking down without moving his head so that it was as unnoticable as possible, he looked at his hand. There were two tally marks on it. But that was impossible. He couln't have seen them...he clasped his other hand over that one so River wouldn't see.
